Run plan Establish similar discharge to 1090824025/26. If good raise current to 1 MA, evaluate plasma performance with strike point above W tile row. For comparison, revisit with the strike point in its normal position. Change RF antenna mix to see if there is a balance provides less injections/impurities. When performance degrades, lower plasma current to obtain steady H-mode.

Established discharge similar to 1090824025/26 and performance was not good but also not bad. Earlier in the day, injections from J antenna were at power levels <1.5 MW and towards the end of the day injections were limited to power around 2.5 MW. Performance seemed to be limited by radiation but the radiation seems not to be dominated by Mo. This would suggests the boron coated tiles have reduced the Mo source but injections and other metals are now dominating Prad.

Physop summary for Thursday, Aug 27, 2009 MP#568 Plasma performance evaluation with B coated Mo tiles SL: Wukitch PO: wolfe EO: Pierson, Byford, Dekow This was a pretty routine run from the physop point of view. We started with 1090824026 with a minimal change in the startup and ran through changes in current, strike location, and density as Wukie hammered away at what's left of our last boronization, some of which seems to still be around. I made a couple of gas tweaks (lower pg4) later in the day, although these were probably not really needed. At the beginning of the day we were getting around 180kJ at 1MA and 4MW and by 17:00 we were down to ~140 to 150kJ. In addition to the usual Mo, which according to Matt was not all that bad, we had injections of Ti, Ni, Cu, which seem to be coming from the J-antenna faraday screen, and of Fe. We also saw W when we ran with the strike too close to the W row of tiles, and had a couple of disruptions which may have been due to tungsten. We again demonstrated that the H-mode threshold is sensitive to the strikepoint height, with between 2 and 3 MW required in the upper location and only 1MW needed in the low strike configuration. I don't remember having seen this in prior years, but we didn't normally run it as high as we are now, up on the 4th tile with power hitting the nose. On shots#14-16 we ran a tf waggle up to 5.6T for Amanda to trace out the pedestal and investigate the apparent discrepancy in the ECE channel mapping. This seems to confirm, or at least support, the interpretation that the new BTOR signal is reading off by 1 to 1.5%. This is somewhat larger discrepancy than expected, but not out of the question. Amanda also did a spot check on the field/current of the TF comparing to a shot from 2008, and got a 1.3% difference, in the consistent direction. Bob should investigate further, and if warranted get a new calibration into the tree for BTOR. The machine ran very reliably, with no runaways and no fizzles all day. We had only two flattop disruptions, both due to injections. Cooling was a little on the slow side, limited mainly by cooling of E-left vertical in the TF. There were no leaks, and the average vessel temperature was kept above 18degrees for the most part. There were no data system hangs. The first shot of the day was a no-power due to an alternator inhibit (high gas temp), and shot#3 was a power supply dud due to a crowbar on OH2L in pre-charge. Aside from that, power systems ran normally. There was one brief (~30min) delay for an RF problem in the J3 transmitter, something to do with the screen supply. Mostly the RF ran well, getting up to ~5.2MW at the end of some staircases, and getting 4MW pretty routinely with only a few faults. D seemed to have more match/dropout problems than the others, but worked most shots. Scorecard: No power shots 1 Duds 1 (power supply) Fizzles 0 Plasmas 29 ======== == Shots 31
