MP#570 - Boundary layer heat transport experiments in L-mode plasmas Goal Our goal today is to first fill in the 4 tesla, 0.8 MA entries in Table 1 of the MP and then move on to 0.4 MA discharges as time allows. Setup NINJA should be filled to 8 PSI D2. Reload shot#1090825005. This was 0.8MA, 5.4 tesla, NL04~0.4e20 shot. Probe targeting was optimum. Strike-point sweep was also very good. Program a Bt ramp-down, starting as soon as possible, to arrive at 4.0 tesla at around 0.5 seconds. OH1 cross-over in 0.8 MA shots should not bother us since it occurs early enough in time. OH1 cross-over control should be used on the 0.4 MA shots. The 0.4 MA shots will have low heat flux on the divertor target. So we will be keeping a close eye on the divertor Lanmguir probes to provide the heat-flux footprint profiles. Last time, probe #6 provided the best footprint profile, but it has since become damaged. So we may need to tweak the RXL sweep a bit. A. | Run Summary for 1090910
MP#570 "Boundary layer heat transport experiments in L-mode plasmas" We cranked out another productive run for the MP today. This time, we completed two 4.0 tesla density scans at 0.8 MA and 0.4 MA. Initially, there was some concern that divertor Langmuir probe #6 would not operate today - not a good thing, since we would be relying heavily on its data to record the heat flux 'footprints', particularly for the 0.4 MA data. It had experienced a 'melt event' on shot#10 yesterday when the strike was fixed on it with high-power ICRF in helium plasmas. It went into strong thermionic electron emission, melted and shorted to the vessel. Then on shot #11 yesterday it miraculously un-shorted to the vessel part way through the shot. Fortunately for today, it remained un-shorted and function more-or-less normally, producing reasonable heat-flux profiles - although the probe-projected area will remain in question. Anyway, with this event firmly in mind, we worked ever more diligently today to collect all the 4.0 tesla data for the MP. After a few data system test shots (started before 9:00 am), we began work on the 0.8 MA data set, producing a density scan (4.0 tesla) of NL04 ~ 0.4 to 1.6e20. The behavior of the plasma proceeded similarly to the density scan previously recorded at 1.1 MA and 5.4 tesla (i.e., at the same q_95). Clean IR footprint data were recorded at the low densities (NL04 ~ 0.44 to 0.66) when the divertor was in a low-to-moderate recycling regime. Ohmic H-modes were seen near the end of the flat-top for NL04 ~ 0.66 and 0.84e20. Again, the inner-wall GPI system was able to record the L-H transition, which typically exhibited three or more ELM-like perturbations before a steady H mode was maintained. Some of these ELMs were recorded on the WASP probe as well (shot#9). As the target density was pushed up to NL04 ~ 1 and beyond, the H-modes disappeared and the footprint signature got very weak on the IR system. However, the Langmuir probe array was able to cleanly record the divertor profile (probe #6 operating!), as the strike-point swept past various probes. At NL04 ~ 1.6e20, the divertor was completely detached, ending the density scan. We then proceeded to do the 0.4 MA density scan. At this current, OH1 cross-over occurs during flat-top time, so we employed Steve Wolfe's new DPCS algorithm to mitigate the influence of this event. This worked quite well. The inner gap remained finite and the WASP probe could operate without interruption. As expected, the IR camera had weak signals, even at the lowest densities in these discharges. But at the lowest densities (NL04 ~ < 0.3) we also experienced a surprise -- floating potentials on the divertor probes went below -70 volts near the strike point. This caused the Langmuir probes to not record ion saturation currents (probe bias is maxed out at -100 volts) and therefore not report the heat-flux footprint near the strikepoint. So we kept the plasma density above NL04 ~ 0.35. Marching the density up by 0.1 increments, we completed the density scan at NL04 ~ 0.65e20 with the outer divertor fully detached. Looking at the Langmuir probe profile data in some detail during the run, we detected some differences in the heat-flux footprints, as recorded by the probes on the vertical target plate (probes #1 through #7) and by probe #8 which is on the 'nose tile'. In particular, the parallel heat-flux density appears to be strongest probe #8. It was noted that the field line angle was systematically varying from ~ 0 to 1 degree on probes #1 to #7 as the strike point swept up the plate. While on probe#8, the field line angle was held fixed at around ~1 degree for the entire sweep. In retrospect, we should have scanned the strike point further up beyond probe #8 to map out such differences in more detail. They are potentially very important, bearing on the question of the physics of divertor heat-fluxes at very small field line angles. The last two shots (#33 and 34) were an attempt to do just that - continue the strike point sweep. However, the sweep still did not continue far enough to put probe #8 cleanly in the private zone. We will need to develop this improved strike-point sweep algorithm for the remaining shots in this MP. | We began by loading 1090825005 into PCS, an 800 kA, 5.4 T, SLN
discharge. A rampdown of the TF field to 4 T by 0.5 s was programmed, and then over the next few shots the strikepoint (RXL) and outer gap (RCUR) were tweaked to optimize the probe target. A few other tweaks were required to RCUR during the rest of the run. It was also necessary to tweak nl04 gains and requested time-history to keep the density flat during the probe scans. The higher densities resulted in some late disruptions, but the probe scans were completed in time to avoid damage to the probes. Changing OH current limits did not solve the disruption problem (plasma for > 1.45 s typical) On shot 22 we went from 800 to 400 kA operation. We enabled Steve Wolfe's oh1_crossover routine to minimize the effects of crossover. This routine worked well to solve the problems we experienced during the 1090825 run. h/(h+d) was very low most of the day. On shots 23 and 24 I allowed the fill pressure to get too low and we had some runaways. Not generally of interest except that the probe sweeps are clearly seen on the hard x-ray signal. The RGA indicated low impurity levels, but the RGA calibration may be in question. A filament to grid short was fixed before the run by tapping on the RGA quad housing. Something fell in on shot 31 resulting in a 55kA "fizzle" and a hard x-ray spike.
