| MP 566b: Study of the RSAE tunneling efficiency during the current ramp
The purpose of these experiments is to study the influence of the plasma edge on the relative amplitude of the edge and core fluctuations from reversed shear Alfvén eigenmodes (RSAEs) measured by the Mirnov coils and PCI, respectively. We will explore this physics by looking for differences in RSAEs as the current is varied during the current ramp and sawteeth. Setup *fiducial: 1090911030, but capping current at 800 kA *RF: all 4 transmitters run-on by 8am (shot 2) use a waveform starting at 80 msec with a ramp to full power by 100 msec, run until 0.5 seconds. Begin with 0.75 MW D, 0.75 MW E *diagnostics: PCI, magnetics, cNPA, ECE (5.4T), Thomson, neutrons *fast EFIT analysis starting at 0.140 sec. Run Plan Part I *increase current ramp rate of fiducial to move toward 600 kA by 100 msec *establish 800 kA discharge with early RF *look for RSAEs, trying to keep RF power below 3 MW *develop 600 kA discharge *develop 500 kA discharge *attempt 400 kA discharge *go back and develop 1 MA discharges *also look for RSAEs during sawteeth Part II (sawtooth specific) will be explored if time permits. |

We started the run using shot 1090911030 as a target, taken from Kessel's slow ramp experiments where an early crowbar of 40ms was developed for more control over the current ramp. Our attempts to modify the current ramp rate in the period 100-200 ms resulted in a series of disruptions and we decided to abandon this approach. Starting on shot 011 we turned to the startup configuration of 1090813012, utilizing a standard crowbar of ~120 msec and a faster current ramp. During shot 016 we achieved an injected ICRH power of 3.1 MW and witnessed RSAEs during the ramp. Following this, we attempted to increase the target current. Shots 016, 018, and 022 may perhaps be the best examples. Shots 016 and 018 may offer the best comparison, but the difference in the current is not large, being only 700 kA and 850 kA, respectively. We were plagued by a consistent glitch in the transition between segment 1 and segment 2 at 110 msec (see 017 for example), which significantly impeded our ability to develop a smooth current ramp. Perhaps a proportional gain was amplifying tis glitch? After a series of unsuccessful attempts of higher current during the ramp we decided to pursue Part II of the MP, investigating the variation of the RSAEs during the flattop with sawteeth, starting on shot 025. Formerly, the RSAEs were seen with magnetics on only a select few shots. Similarly, today we observed RSAEs in a number of sawteeth with PCI, but the evidence of RSAEs with magnetics is slim. A summary of the sawteeth studies follows (using only BP2T_ABK and channel 21). shot | current | RSAEs | TAEs 022 | 0.84 MA | PCI | both 023 | 0.94 MA | PCI | both 024 | 0.93 MA | PCI | both 025 | 1.01 MA | PCI | both 026 | 1.12 MA | PCI | both* 027 | 1.22 MA | xxx | both 028 | 0.75 MA | xxx | both* 029 | 0.65 MA | xxx | both* 030 | fizzle | xxx | xxxx 031 | 0.55 MA | xxx | both *may show signs of larger TAE signals on magnetics To finish the studies we will need to do a thorough comparison of the relative amplitudes of PCI and magnetics. |
