Subject: Further Investigation of Turbulence and Transport in Low Density Ohmic Plasmas to Resolve the Mystery of Electron Transport

This run is the second phase of MP 571. The experiments will be carried out at different plasma currents but at the constant toroidal magnetic 5.2 T to allow us to explore the impact of the q profile on electron thermal transport.

The experiments start at Bt = 5.2 T and Ip = 0.8 MA to obtain a low-density shot with nebar ~ 0.3 10^20m^-3 in the linear ohmic regime.

After this shot is obtained, move to the plasma at Ip = 0.6 and 0.4 MA, while keeping Bt = 5.2 T.

At each plasma current, the electron density (nebar) will be scanned from 0.3 (possibly 0.2) to 0.8 10^20m^-3 to cover both the linear ohmic region and the transition from the linear ohmic to the saturated ohmic region.

If the time is allowed, we will also try to cover the density scan at Bt = 3.9 T and Ip = 0.6 MA, which is not completed on 1090917.

A computer problem caused us to lose more than 1 hour today. Moreover, because of locked modes, only single plasma was obtained at 1 MA.

However, reasonable coverage in density, current, and magnetic field has been obtained in today's and yesterday's runs.

After 12 hours of ECDC in helium overnight we were able get very low
densities today. Shot 01 was around 1e19/m^2 on nl04. However, we also
had serious runaway issues that took 5 or 6 shots to fix with probably
too small an incremental change in the prefill, the pg3 seg 1 gas puff,
and early nl04 programming. Later in the run we also had problems with
locked modes, both early and late in the discharge, when trying to get
data at 1 MA. The early locked modes were almost certainly the result
of a rapid drop in the density before 450 ms. We were eventually able
to fill in the early density drop by changing the early nl04
programming. Disruptions caused by the locked modes resulted in a few
fizzles today since it was hard to lower the prefill, as we usually do
following disruptions, without getting back the runaways.

We had to enter the cell to zap one of the full flux loops.

We somehow managed to fill up the data disks and lose data on shot 24.
Much work by Josh to restore some of the data. Had one no power
shot (25) because of a CAMAC server issue.

On shot 30 the EF2 power supply stopped following demand. This problem
will have to be fixed on Monday.
