Run Plan for MP564 - Power requirements for high confinement H-modes and the role of radiated power spatial distribution

SL: Loarte/Reinke
PO: Hutchinson

The goal of this experiment is to create impurity seeded EDA and ELMy H-modes with net input power (P_NET=P_TOT-P_RAD) matching unseeded H-modes. Target EDA H-modes were made on 1090902 but the ELMy targets were less robust so we're going to re-do the unseeded ELMy portion using targets from 1090914 which had much better success at making steady ELMy H-modes. 1 MW ICRF ramps will be used to vary P_NET to ensure a good match.

We'll be focusing on using Ne and Ar for most of the run but want N2 to be available if we have time. To begin, the plenums should be filled with the following.
-fill B-SIDE-LOW with 1.5 psi Ne
-fill B-SIDE-UP with 1.0 psi Ar

Will do the EDA/ELM-Free with both gases and if time purge and go back and try some N2. Will repeat the H-mode threshold scan shot for the target discharge and then move to seeding.

1) Load equilibrium from 1090902001 (Ip=800 kA, nl04=0.8). ICRF ramp from 0.75-3 MW from t=0.75-1.5 sec. Verify similar threshold and proper diagnostic/aux system operations.

2) Change RF timing ICRF ramp 2.5-4.0 MW from t=0.6-0.75 sec and 4.0-5.0 MW from t=0.75-1.5 sec. Enable B-SIDE-LOW 1.5 psi Ne puff from 0.4-0.6 sec.

3) Increase Ne pressure to 2.0 psi and repeat

4) Disable B-SIDE-LOW and enable B-SIDE-UPPER with 1.0 psi Ar with 0.4-0.6 sec puff. Repeat shot from (2)

5) Increase Ar pressure to 1.5 psi and repeat

Move on to ELMy H-mode Plasmas. Remake the unseeded targets using the recipe from 1090914. Limit total ICRF power through J-ANT to 1.2 MW if possible.

6) Load equilibrium from 1090914014 (nl04=0.55) but reduce Ip from 900 kA to 800 kA. ICRF ramp from 0.75-3 MW from t=0.75-1.5 sec to find LH threshold. Verify ELMy H-mode regime. Lower density and repeat if necessary.

7) Change ICRF, stepping power up during shot from ICRF @ P_LH -0.2MW from 0.5-1.0 sec, then P_LH +0.3MW from 1.0-1.5 sec.

8) Change ICRF, stepping power up during shot from ICRF @ P_LH +0.8MW from 0.5-0.9 sec, then P_LH +1.3MW from 0.9-1.2 sec, then P_LH + 1.8 MW from 1.2-1.5 sec.

Move on to seeding these plasmas with impurities. Change ICRF timing to match earlier in the day. ICRF ramp 2.5-4.0 MW from t=0.6-0.75 sec and 4.0-5.0 MW from t=0.75-1.5 sec.

9) Enable B-SIDE-LOW 2.0 psi Ne puff from 0.4-0.6 sec.

10) Decrease Ne pressure to 1.5 psi and repeat

11) Disable B-SIDE-LOW and enable B-SIDE-UPPER with 1.5 psi Ar with 0.4-0.6 sec puff. Repeat shot from (9)

12) Decrease Ar pressure to 1.0 psi and repeat

If time permits, flush B-SIDE-LOW and fill with 2.0 psi N2 and repeat ELMing and EDA targets.

13) Enable B-SIDE-LOW 2.0 psi N2 puff from 0.4-0.6 sec. Repeat shot from (9)

14) Increase N2 pressure to 3.0 psi and repeat

15) Repeat cycle of N2 puffing into EDA-target from (2)

The machine and, specifically the RF, ran very well today and we nearly completed the ambitious run plan. All the EDA H-mode data was collected for both Ar and Ne seeding. We were able to get the threshold scan and unseeded targets in ELMy H-mode done as well as the argon seeding. We were thwarted in the last hour of the day in trying to get the Ne seeding in ELMy H-mode done. First a killer injection, then a fizzle and then a EF3L cooling problem. It will take sometime to sort out what the PRAD is to subtract to make a quantitative PNET, but the raw data is there.

shots 003 and 019 were repeats of 1090902001, the EDA H-mode threshold scan.

004-006 had 1.44 psi Ne puffing from 0.4-0.6
007 had 2.02 psi Ne
008-009 had 2.49 psi Ne
010 had 3.0 psi Ne

012-013 were puffing using B-SIDE-UP which didn't seem to put much argon into the plasma so we switched to B-SIDE-LOW

014 had 1.0 psi Ar from 0.4-0.6
015 had 1.5 psi Ar but had significant metallic impurities
016 had 2.0 psi Ar
017 had 0.34 psi Ar
018 had 0.80 psi Ar

020-021 were threshold scans for ELMy H-mode
022 had steady PIN and PRAD for ICRF at 0.9 and 1.4 MW
023 had an early ELM-free which we blamed on an evolving equilibrium so we moved from a three step power scan to a two step. The first step ended up being much better than the second.
024-025 had 1.9 and 2.4 MW steps
026 had 2.4 and 3.9 MW (should have been 2.9 but I messed up) Should try and get more ELMy unseeded targets at higher RF power if possible.
027-028 had 0.8 psi Ar which proved to be too much to get good ELMs
029 had 0.46 psi Ar
030 had 2.1 psi Ne which again was too much and turned out to be the end of the run

If we can squeeze in some extra shots later in the week I'd suggest doing a 1.0 psi Ne puff repeat of 030 and play around from there either up or down to vary PNET.

Relatively uneventful from the physop viewpoint. Neon has some favorable
effects during the main RF seeming to encourage controlled H-modes, but
they are then rather disruptive in rampdown, showing evidence that at the
H-mode back transition there is too much power radiated and the RF drops
faster than the impurities are ejected. The consequence is disruptions
early in rampdown.

Argon does not show the same favorable effects.

Some time was lost to mds hangs.
At the end of the run the EF3L nitrogen valve got stuck closed, and caused
premature termination of the run by about 20 minutes.

Session Leader Comments
Sep 22 2009 09:07:03:803AM1090922003Matt ReinkeStarting with repeating the EDA H-mode threshold shot (1090902001). Threshold a bit lower than 1090902001 (~0.3 MW), but things appear to be working good. This should complete (1)

NEXT: enable B-SIDE-LOW and start with the Ne seeding.
Sep 22 2009 09:20:50:867AM1090922004Matt ReinkeRF not steady and getting a variety of injections. Don't see much Ne (relative to other lines). Seeing W injections after 1 second and peak divertor deltaT is on the W-tile. Steve's going to raise the strike point a smidge and repeat.
Sep 22 2009 09:33:22:227AM1090922005Matt ReinkeShot similar to 004, but RF is a bit cleaner. Getting some injections from J-ANT after 1.1 seconds (seen on AXJ and WIDE2). Early PRAD rise is very core dominated on AXUV and SXR so it would be hard to be Ne. McPherson gain is messed up so it's hard to tell the source, but peaking suggests tungsten.

NEXT: raise the strike point another little bit to avoid the W
Sep 22 2009 10:45:31:070AM1090922006Matt ReinkeMuch quieter PRAD trace. Emissivity profile hollower and EDGE SXR increased compared to 004 and 005. The pre-ICRF PRAD rise is very small.
P_NET=P_TOT (P_OH+0.8*P_RF)-P_RAD (2pi-foil) = 4.0-2.0=2.0.

NEXT: Increase Ne puff pressure to 2.0 psi.
Sep 22 2009 06:55:27:640PM1090922007Matt ReinkeGREAT shot. Good steady, high power ICRF w/ steady PRAD until Ni/Cu injection near the end of the shot. PRAD increased w/ Ne gas pressure by < 500 kW.
PNET (@1.0)=4.0-2.25=1.75

Looking at the magnetics there is a very strong fluctuation at ~700 kHz that is modulated in frequency by the sawteeth

NEXT: increase Ne pressure to 2.4 psi and repeat.
Sep 22 2009 10:46:44:210AM1090922008Matt ReinkeAnother great EDA shot with higher PRAD (PRAD_MAIN increased by 1 MW). Didn't get the Thopson on this shot so I want to repeat. Worried about Ne buildup so repeat with same puff and see if PRAD increasing.

PNET(@1.0)=4.0-2.8=1.2
Sep 22 2009 10:36:20:883AM1090922009Matt ReinkeVery repeatable PRAD, so shot-to-shot buildup not a problem. Got Thomson data for this shot.

NEXT: Increase Ne puff to 3.0 psi
Sep 22 2009 10:56:31:303AM1090922010Matt ReinkeLooks like we hit the upper limit of Ne puffing. No injection at H->L back transition so it just looks like PRAD climbed too high from Ne.

NEXT: Change over to Ar puffing. Enable B-SIDE-UPPER w/ 1 psi Ar.
Sep 22 2009 11:31:41:320AM1090922012Matt ReinkeJohn reports little to no change in Ar level and spectroscopy shows significant Mo and W radiation, matched by broad emissivity profiles, not hollowed like you'd expect from Ar seeding.

NEXT: increase Ar puff pressure to 2.0 psi
Sep 22 2009 11:40:42:900AM1090922013Matt ReinkeNo change in HIREX signal level (actually decrease) despite doubling the pressure of the puff. Something wrong with B-SIDE-UP.

NEXT: Switching gas puff back to B-SIDE-LOW (1 psi Ar).
Sep 22 2009 11:59:21:163AM1090922014Matt ReinkeGood shot, showing B-SIDE lower works. HIREX shows significant signal PRAD increases throughout shot but does not cause H-L back transition.

NEXT: increase Ar pressure to 1.5 psi and repeat shot.
Sep 22 2009 12:11:04:243PM1090922015Matt ReinkeToo much Ar on this shot. Lots of H-modes with quick back transitions.

NEXT: back off the Ar puff down to 0.5 psi and work back up.
Sep 22 2009 12:28:28:460PM1090922016Matt ReinkeMiscomm had Ar puff at 2.0 psi instead of 0.5 psi. Got a good shot with lots of Ar radiation. 2pi-foil saturating on this shot.

NEXT: 0.5 psi Ar.
Sep 22 2009 12:45:09:977PM1090922017Matt ReinkeAr level down for this shot, PRAD drops and divertor heat flux comes back and H89 increases...makes sense.

NEXT: Split the difference between 017 and 014, Ar puff to 0.8 psi

Sep 22 2009 12:58:02:930PM1090922018Matt ReinkeGot a Mo injection in the middle of the H-mode and the before/after H-modes are distinctly different.

NEXT: Steve suggested repeating the EDA threshold shot since we tweaked it a bit from 003. RF ramp from 003 into 018, but no impurity puffing.
Sep 22 2009 01:14:04:117PM1090922019Matt ReinkeThe LH transition power was very similar to 003.

NEXT: Move on to ELMy H-mode shots. Start with threshold power scan.
Sep 22 2009 01:36:36:307PM1090922020Matt ReinkeNINJA puff moved to 1.0 seconds. Build it into the unseeded targets and make sure it's non-perturb.
The ELMs go away after 1.0ish seconds with a rise in nl04. Could be NINJA. PLH is about 1.4 MW (PRF at 0.9 MW), very early in the RF pulse.

NEXT: Repeat with the start of the RF ramp at 300 kW and no NINJA. RF wants to better tune.
Sep 22 2009 02:04:09:960PM1090922021Matt ReinkeTransition at similar power. The loss of ELMs occurs later in this shot with no NINJA, so it probably wasn't NINJA.

NEXT: move to (7) with RF steps 0.5-1.0 @ 0.9 MW and 1.0-1.5 at 1.4 MW. NINJA puff at 1.3 seconds. No J-ANT power.
Sep 22 2009 02:12:03:420PM1090922022Matt ReinkeGood shot for an ELMy H-mode just above the threshold (7). Jerry notes that the change in ELMy character near the end of these shots is correlated with a change in RXL.

NEXT: Move to (8) with a three step ICRF (1.9,2.4,3.9), keeping J-ANT off until the last pulse.
Sep 22 2009 02:28:34:043PM1090922023Matt ReinkeICRF choppy. Initial H-mode is ELM-free. This is probably due to the RF coming in when the equilibrium is still evolving.

NEXT. Drop 1st RF pulse and go from 0.9-1.2,1.2-1.5 at 1.9 MW and 2.4 MW respectively.
Sep 22 2009 02:36:27:920PM1090922024Matt ReinkeRF still choppy.

NEXT: repeat but change antenna mix.
Sep 22 2009 02:50:29:107PM1090922025Matt ReinkeThe 1st ICRF step had a good steady PIN and PRAD and the 2nd had a transition away from large ELMs with higher particle and energy confinement.

NEXT: Repeat shot with 2.4 and 3.9 MW of ICRF with the timing of the same two steps.
Sep 22 2009 03:09:18:543PM1090922026Matt ReinkeAgain, the first step works well but doesn't like the 2nd step. We've got a good RAMP, 1.9 and 2.4 MW target. Move on to seeding.

NEXT: 0.7-0.9 sec 0.8 psi Ar, ICRF @ 2.5-4.0 MW from 0.8-0.95 and 4-5 MW from 0.95-1.5 MW.
Sep 22 2009 03:24:32:640PM1090922027Matt ReinkeLot of metallic impurities in this shot with a W injection at 0.77 and the H-mode looks to have a lot of metal in the radiation.

NEXT: Repeat...because I'm session leader and I said so.
Sep 22 2009 03:38:02:183PM1090922028Matt ReinkeCleaner ICRF and PRAD on this shot. Alberto suggests we've just got too much power loss to be able to sustain ELMs.

NEXT: reduce puff pressure to 0.5 psi Ar and repeat.
Sep 22 2009 03:54:33:450PM1090922029Matt ReinkeRegained the ELMs with lower PRAD but still above the target discharges. Should be close to match.

NEXT: Moving to 2.0 psi Ne
Sep 22 2009 04:09:41:047PM1090922030Matt ReinkeAgain, it looks like the radiation is too much and not getting "the kinds of ELMs were looking for" says Jerry.

NEXT: Reduce Ne puff pressure to 1.0 psi
Sep 22 2009 04:23:23:997PM1090922031Matt ReinkeLooks like something fell in. Early disruption before RF.

NEXT: repeat without massive injection of something.
Sep 22 2009 04:30:56:013PM1090922032Matt ReinkeFizzle.... :(

Note that these shots are set up with tf=-152800kA, which gives
Bt=-5.50T rather than -5.4T with the revised calibration. Leave
it this way, since
  a) we're supposed to be matching conditions from the older shot
  b) it's too small a difference to matter anyway (except to Amanda).

Shot#1: EF2L test under PLC control
EF2L shows 3000A in bus rog.
Lots of magnetics sensors with no finite signal,
all inner wall or top so it's ok.

Looks good.
Back in controlled access until the alternator is ready.

Sep 22 2009 08:51:13:320AM1090922002Steve Wolfe

Shot#2: H-bottom (No-)gas test
Draw a waveform on wire 19 (H-bottom) between
-.5 and 0sec. No gas in plenum. Valve not connected.
H-bot enabled. Also B-top and B-main enabled.
Look at output signals on camac HV monitor.

HV light came on ok. No signal on HV monitor for H-bottom
Output 19 is there as digitized in Interface room. Still
something screwed up with that board.

Note: I seem to be having a problem with middle mouse button
in add mpde not working? Possible KDE setup problem, need to
check on this.

Not sure what the PCS "add" problem was, working now.
Ready for first plasma shot.

plasma full length. H-mode at 1.1sec
Startup looks ok, no runaways. RF looks clean to 3+ MW.
All ok from my end.

Sep 22 2009 09:16:41:100AM1090922004Steve Wolfe

Shot#4: On to step 2, enable B-side lower (raised from 1.25 to 1.5psi)
RF ramp changed to 2.0->4.0->5.0MW

plasma to 1.7sec, lose some rf after 1sec, three h-modes.
First gets to 155kJ at 4MW.
Matt says injection is W.

Next: try raising zxl to get rid of W injection, strike is
a little low.

Sep 22 2009 09:30:53:523AM1090922005Steve Wolfe

Shot#5: ZXL from .015 to .020. Repeat rf waveform.
plasma to 1.75sec, still getting two h-modes, some injections.
Strike came up, but still getting heat on row 3.

Next: raise zxl another 5mm

found that the Ar was actually 2.0 psi, because of a misunderstanding.

--------------------------
Ar to 0.5 psi.
Sep 22 2009 12:52:44:460PM1090922017Ian HutchinsonPlasma ramped down.
The plenum fill pressure is probably a bit below what was asked for, 0.3-0.4psi.
----------------------------
Ar pressure to 0.8psi.

Sep 22 2009 03:04:47:450PM1090922020Ian HutchinsonPlasma ramps down. ELMs are suppressed after about 1s. Ninja?

Sep 22 2009 01:54:02:450PM1090922021Steve Wolfe
shot#21: repeat of shot#20 without ninja, different rf
Ian's gone to a meeting, I'm back.

plasma full length, runaways early
Whatever is happening to density and ELMs has moved to 1.35sec.
Ninja is tentatively exonerated.

Next: raise pg4, change rf.

Sep 22 2009 02:07:48:683PM1090922022Steve Wolfe
shot#22: raise pg4 from 30 to 33msec
Moving on to rf waveform of #7.
Ninja to 1.3sec
plasma full length, still runaways, actually worse.
injection at 0.7sec.

Next: raise pg3 puff in seg1, up a little more on pg4

Sep 22 2009 02:20:49:373PM1090922023Steve Wolfe
shot#23: raise pg4 from 33 to 36msec
Integrator gate C from 0.3 to 0.2sec (for b21_proj/A-coil start)
To rf waveform #8; no seeding yet.

plasma, made it down, but lots of flashing and still bad runaways.
Big injection at 1sec, rf has lots of faulting.

Next: raise pg4 and pg3 in seg 1 again?

Sep 22 2009 02:34:58:670PM1090922024Steve Wolfe
shot#24: raise pg4 from 36 to 39msec, raise pg3 before 0.1sec
repeating with rf delayed till after the rxl sweep in (still #8)
plasma, quieter, but still has some runaways, maybe a little better
Elms start around 1sec, no injections to speak of.
RF still having problems, ELMs may be killing the coupling

Next: try tweaking the rcur program at .02sec

Sep 22 2009 02:48:47:640PM1090922025Steve Wolfe
shot#25: change rcur from .63 to .60m at .02sec, leave point at .04s at .64m
This is a big change, like 3000A-m on RCUR offset at 20msec, may scrunch
on inner wall. Still trying to suppress runaways.

plasma f.l., runaways much better. Neutrons peak at 1sec, again at 1.4,
down a little in between, but not too shabby. D still has a few faults,
ELM modulation on all antennas.

Next: change rf steps again, call it step#8.5
No DPCS changes.

Sep 22 2009 03:03:30:717PM1090922026Steve Wolfe
shot#26: change rf steps again, call it step#8.5
No DPCS changes, see if runaways stay down (and plasma stays up)
plasma f.l. still low (or no) runaways

Next: enable B-side lower, change timing of puff to 0.7:0.9sec

Sep 22 2009 03:06:47:230PM1090922027Steve Wolfe
shot#27: enable B-side lower 0.8psi, change timing of puff to 0.7:0.9sec
Ian taking over.

Sep 22 2009 03:30:38:543PM1090922027Ian HutchinsonPlasma with rather unstable H-modes

No changes.
Sep 22 2009 03:44:31:060PM1090922028Ian HutchinsonPlasma till 1.7s.
------------------------
Lower fill puff to 34ms.
Argon puff to 0.5psi.
Sep 22 2009 04:03:12:950PM1090922029Ian HutchinsonPlasma to rampdown.
------------------------
Replace Argon with Neon at 2psi.
Sep 22 2009 04:17:23:873PM1090922030Ian HutchinsonPlasma disrupts at 1.58s.
----------------------------
Ne pressure to 1psi
Sep 22 2009 04:30:38:327PM1090922031Ian HutchinsonDisrupts at .63s. Hit by a brick.
------------------
No changes.
Sep 22 2009 04:56:57:123PM1090922032Ian HutchinsonFizzle.
