MP 567: Spatial Distribution and Dynamics of Disruption Mitigation Radiation

SL: Reinke
PO: Wolfe/Irby

This run plan will cover 1090924 (Wolfe) and the 1st half of 1090925 (Irby).

The purpose of this experiment is to investigate what determines the length of time between when the gas jet first interacts with the plasma and when the prompt thermal quench (TQ) occurs. We will do this with a q95 scan (vary Bt) and a thermal stored energy scan. (DAY 1)
We will also look at the intensity of the gas-jet radiation by varying the pressure of the gas jet and the gas jet species. (end of DAY 1 + DAY 2)
By observing a variety of mitigated disruptions we will also look at the toroidal symmetry of the energy loss during these events as well as neutral and ion transport of the gas jet materials.

MACHINE:
Have ICRF (2-6 MW) available but not needed for the first few shots.
B-SIDE-LOW filled with 2.0 psi Ne
VUV gatevalve closed, ECE gatevalve closed
NINJA can barter for a puff in the H-mode plasmas, but stay out of my Ohmics!

DIAGNOSTICS:
AXUV diodes with low gain settings
Thomson scattering with control of pulse phasing (t1=1.2020,t2=1.2038)
FRCECE and GPC1 (if I can convince Amanda)
TCI with burst mode enabled (250 kHz, w/ t0=1.18 sec)
CXRS run in kinetics mode with 6 fibers/camera (3 OUT_PUFF, 3 IW_POL_SIG, 6 POL_BACK) spaced evenly over field of view. 200 microsecond exposure with trigger at 1.2022 seconds.
IR camera
LBO can run in flat top as long as it's gone before the gas jet fires and doesn't disrupt the target (that's MY job)
Limiter and Surface TC's
HIREXJR for core rotation (Ar provided by the disruption mitigation)
Fast magnetics

GAS JET:
Start with 15:85 Ar:He mixture at 70 bar with 1.5 ms pulse. Have other bottles on hand for species scan (DAY 2). Get GAS JET attached to the fizzle detector. Gas jet will be triggered at 1.2 seconds for all plasmas.

RUN PLAN:
A: q95 scan at fixed Ip and x2 density points
1) Establish 4.1 T, 1.0 MA, nl04=0.4 target plasma (NO DISRUPTION) and verify proper machine/diagnostic operations. Load basic equilibrium from 1090924007. If locked modes/runaways a problem, increase density to nl04=0.5 (or higher)
2) x2 shots Bt=4.1 T
3) x2 shots Bt=5.5 T
4) x2 shots Bt=6.7 T
5) Increase density to nl04=0.8 [or x2 the density in (A1)] and x2 shots at 6.7 T
6) x2 shots Bt=5.5 T
7) x2 shots Bt=4.1 T

B: W_TH scan at fixed Ip, Bt and nl04 by varying ICRF input power
1) Using target equilibrium from (A) increase nl04 to 1.0 and apply 2 MW ICRF power from 0.6-1.3 (ie on past disruption trigger) x2 shots
2) x2 shots w/ ICRF power to 3 MW
3) apply 2.0 psi Ne puff from 0.4-0.6 seconds ICRF from 2.5-4.0 MW from 0.6-0.75 and hold at 4 MW from 0.75-1.3 for x2 shots
4) apply 2.0 psi Ne puff from 0.4-0.6 seconds ICRF from 2.5-MAX MW from 0.6-0.9 and hold at MAX MW from 0.9-1.3 for x2 shots

C: Gas Jet Parameter Scan
1) Decrease gas jet pressure shot-to-shot by pumping on the plenum. Choose stable, reproducible target from (A) or (B). Plenum pressure at 55,40,25,10 (bar) with only 1 shot at each pressure.
2) Pump out gas jet plenum and change gas jet species. In order of priority move through the following: (85:15 He/Ne, 85:15 He/Kr, 85:15 D2/Ar, pure He, pure Ar). All at 70 bar and 1.5 ms pulse length. Choose Choose stable, reproducible target from (A) or (B). Judging on remaining time do 1 or more shots for each bottle.
2*) Between changes in gas jet there should be time to run non gas-jet plasmas. Try and finish up MP 564 shots.
a) load 1090922030 w/ 1.0 psi Ne puff
b) lower/raise Ne pressure and repeat
c) load 1090922010 w/ 4.0 psi Ne puff
b) lower/raise Ne pressure and repeat

The run went very well and we got a ton of data to analyze. Most impressive was the repeatability of the plasma. We only had one fizzle the whole day, even after using D2 as the carrier gas. Parts (A), (B) and 2/5 of (C) were completed. Of the 31 plasmas, 29 were mitigated disruptions. At this point, the gas jet should be considered for piggy-back experiments since it doesn't affect plasma performance on subsequent shots and does not hugely affect the shot cycle.

(A) q95 scan shots: 004-013
We had to raise the lower density point to nl04=0.6 to avoid the locked modes and Ohmic H-modes (003), making the high density point nl04=1.2

shot / q95 / nl04
-------------------
004 / 2.8 / 0.61
006 / 3.5 / 0.58
007 / 4.2 / 0.61
009 / 4.3 / 1.2
010 / 3.6 / 1.2
011 / 3.7 / 1.2
012 / 2.8 / 1.2
013 / 3.6 / 0.61

These results showed that the time between the gas jet hitting the plasma and the TQ increased with q95 and didn't vary much with density except at the high field point.

(B) Wth scan shots: 014-02
We had a hard time making high stored energy plasmas. EDA's just weren't sticking around long enough and eventually we disrupted the beginning of an ELM-free H-mode in order to get the high WTH and edge Te. All of these shots were at 5.5 T so the RF and the FRCECE would work.

shot / WTH [kJ] / H or L
---------------
014 / 104 / H
015 / 55 / L
017 / 107 / H
018 / 110 / L
019 / 80 / L
020 / 118 / H
021 / 136 / H
022 / 130 / H
023 / 118 / L
024 / 110 / L
025 / 176 / H
026 / 182 / H

The highest stored energy shots had the longest pre-TQ and the lowest WTH had the shortest, but in the middle there wasn't a direct correlation. It's not just WTH and we'll have to look a bit closer at the profile evolution.

027 was a failed attempt at an Ne-seeded ELMy discharge from 1090922, too much radiation. We ended up with really fast gas bottle change-overs (15-20 minutes) so we only tried this once.

(C) gas jet scan shots: 028-033
We were able to change to 2 of the 5 different bottles, the D2:Ar and the He:Kr before we ran out of time. We didn't bother doing the plenum pressure scan since that was done on 1071220 to a similar extent and we had fast AXUV then. All were done at nl04=0.6

shot / gas
----------
028 / D2:Ar q95=3.6
029 / D2:Ar q95=3.6
031 / He:Kr q95=3.6
032 / He:Kr q95=4.1
033 / He:Kr q95=2.8

The D2:Ar didn't really seem much different than the He:Ar shots. The He:Kr arrived much later due to the sound speed difference and the q95 scan in He:Kr had a similar relative shift in the pre-TQ.

Following the loss of F15 yesterday, Steve Wolfe synthesized the signal
from other loops and recalculated all the predictors. This change seems
to have worked well. We had a plasma on shot 1 that disrupted because
of a locked mode. The next couple of shots were spent increasing
density in an attempt to avoid the locked mode (fixed by shot 3).

We had problems with hards much of the day, but generally well before
1.2 s when we turned on the MGP. I tried various gas puff and density
tweaks the seemed to work for a shot or two and then the hards returned.
Too much gas or nl requested density resulted in MARFE (between a MARFE
and a HARD place)

Magnetics indicated Bz0 was high by 4 to 8 mT from what we normally
consider a good startup value, but the machine ran well anyway. On shot
28 I did change ef4 from -1300 to -1350 A since the breakdown was
late. No significant change in breakdown.

Sep 25 2009 11:56:23:897AM1090925013Matt Reinkeq95=3.6,nl04=0.61 small change in TQ timing w/r/t 006, but looks similar.

NEXT: move to WTH scan. Keep this equilibrium, add a small strike point swing to avoid divertor cooking and increase nl04=1.0. RF @ 2MW from 0.6->dist.
Sep 25 2009 12:15:00:583PM1090925014Matt ReinkeWth=104 kJ at disruption. TQ pushed back from both the high and low density Ohmic shots at 5.5 T. Got ELM-free H-modes instead of EDA's, but still killed the plasma in the H-mode phase.

NEXT: Repeat shot but raise nl04=1.0
Sep 25 2009 12:25:07:617PM1090925015Matt ReinkeNo H-mode, WTh=55 kJ. Only got 1 MW of RF, E-ANT failed. TQ shifted back to the Ohmic levels.

NEXT: Repeat w/ full RF
Sep 25 2009 01:51:55:820PM1090925017Matt ReinkeWTH=107 kJ. Still ELM-Free H-modes, with nl04~0.95. Very similar TQ timing to 014.

NEXT: Increase to 3 MW of power and target nl04=1.05 to try and bring out the EDA.
Sep 25 2009 01:51:43:770PM1090925018Matt ReinkeWTH=110 kJ. Still ELM-free H-modes and this time disrupted in the L-mode. Still looks similar to 018 which had higher density but same WTH.

NEXT: try to raise the nl04 to 1.05. RF to 4 MW max w/ Ne puff. If can't get a steady EDA then move RF timing so that I kill the 1st H-mode.
Sep 25 2009 01:51:25:490PM1090925019Matt ReinkeWth=80 kJ, in L-Mode D-ANT faulted and the Ne puff just made things worse. Very late TQ on this shot.

NEXT: moving the start of the ICRF pulse to 0.95 so I can disrupt a better class of H-mode.
Sep 25 2009 01:54:56:397PM1090925020Matt ReinkeWth~118 kJ. Disrupted a steady EDA H-mode. Energy low due to injection and some RF dropouts.

NEXT: repeat, maybe try to switch to I-mode to get WTH up?
Sep 25 2009 02:05:45:160PM1090925021Matt ReinkeWth=136 kJ but the timing looks similar to 020.

NEXT: Increase PRF max to 5 MW and shift RF start to 1.0 sec to try and hit the WTH max.
Sep 25 2009 02:18:47:913PM1090925022Matt ReinkeWth=130 kJ. Lost J-ANT at 1.1 sec with a large injection. The EDA isn't working for me. Switching to an ELM free H-mode to try and raise Wth.

NEXT: nl04=0.75, 1 psi Ne from 0.8-0.95. RF trying to get to 5 MW max.
Sep 25 2009 02:32:57:850PM1090925023Matt ReinkeWth=118 kJ. The DM fired just after an H->L back transition. The TQ time moved in significantly compared to 020 by 0.1 msec.

NEXT: RF wants to adjust matching. Move Ne puff to 0.8-1.0 sec.
Sep 25 2009 02:44:23:440PM1090925024Matt ReinkeWth~110 kJ, again hit at the HL back transition. Very similar to 023.

NEXT: Lower RF demand and move start to 1.1 sec so DM hits at maximum edge Te. Disable Ne puff.
Sep 25 2009 02:54:51:697PM1090925025Matt ReinkeWth~176 kJ!! This really moved the TQ out from 024 by almost 0.3 msec.

NEXT: Repeat
Sep 25 2009 03:17:21:810PM1090925026Matt ReinkeWth=182 kJ. TQ timing very similar to 025.

NEXT: Changing over the gas bottles which takes some time. We're loading 1090922030 w/ 1.0 psi Ne as a "filler" shot.
Sep 25 2009 03:29:07:810PM1090925027Matt ReinkeThis was an attempt at an ELMy H-mode. A lot of PRAD, railed the SXR system. Didn't get any ELMs on this shot.

NEXT: Gas bottle changeover to 85:15 D2/Ar mix. Repeat into 006 from today.
Sep 25 2009 04:10:44:323PM1090925028Matt ReinkeThis shot had D2:Ar 85:15 for the gas jet species. Looked very much like the He:Ar targets 006 and 013 at the same field and density.

NEXT: Repeat
Sep 25 2009 04:11:45:620PM1090925029Matt ReinkeThis shot repeated very similarly. No post-disruption fizzle even though we dumped a bunch of D2 into the plasma.

NEXT: Change to the He:Kr 85:15 and repeat same target.
Sep 25 2009 04:48:41:323PM1090925031Matt Reinke85:15 He:Kr mix fired into the q=3.6 target. First signal on WB3-AX delayed almost 0.4 msec due to slower neutral sound speed. Looks like Kr is seen on the CXRS as well, which is nice.

NEXT: do the q95 scan in He/Kr mix. Repeat 007
Sep 25 2009 04:56:54:230PM1090925032Matt Reinkeq95=4.1 nl04=0.6 The timing changed in the right direction

NEXT: Repeat 004, the low-q shot for this series.
Sep 25 2009 05:16:53:467PM1090925033Matt Reinkeq=2.8 shot w/ He:Kr mix. TQ moved earlier.
