| MP 567: Spatial Distribution and Dynamics of Disruption Mitigation Radiation
SL: Reinke PO: Wolfe/Irby This run plan will cover 1090924 (Wolfe) and the 1st half of 1090925 (Irby). The purpose of this experiment is to investigate what determines the length of time between when the gas jet first interacts with the plasma and when the prompt thermal quench (TQ) occurs. We will do this with a q95 scan (vary Bt) and a thermal stored energy scan. (DAY 1) We will also look at the intensity of the gas-jet radiation by varying the pressure of the gas jet and the gas jet species. (end of DAY 1 + DAY 2) By observing a variety of mitigated disruptions we will also look at the toroidal symmetry of the energy loss during these events as well as neutral and ion transport of the gas jet materials. MACHINE: Have ICRF (2-6 MW) available but not needed for the first few shots. B-SIDE-LOW filled with 2.0 psi Ne VUV gatevalve closed, ECE gatevalve closed NINJA can barter for a puff in the H-mode plasmas, but stay out of my Ohmics! DIAGNOSTICS: AXUV diodes with low gain settings Thomson scattering with control of pulse phasing (t1=1.2020,t2=1.2038) FRCECE and GPC1 (if I can convince Amanda) TCI with burst mode enabled (250 kHz, w/ t0=1.18 sec) CXRS run in kinetics mode with 6 fibers/camera (3 OUT_PUFF, 3 IW_POL_SIG, 6 POL_BACK) spaced evenly over field of view. 200 microsecond exposure with trigger at 1.2022 seconds. IR camera LBO can run in flat top as long as it's gone before the gas jet fires and doesn't disrupt the target (that's MY job) Limiter and Surface TC's HIREXJR for core rotation (Ar provided by the disruption mitigation) Fast magnetics GAS JET: Start with 15:85 Ar:He mixture at 70 bar with 1.5 ms pulse. Have other bottles on hand for species scan (DAY 2). Get GAS JET attached to the fizzle detector. Gas jet will be triggered at 1.2 seconds for all plasmas. RUN PLAN: A: q95 scan at fixed Ip and x2 density points 1) Establish 4.1 T, 1.0 MA, nl04=0.4 target plasma (NO DISRUPTION) and verify proper machine/diagnostic operations. Load basic equilibrium from 1090924007. If locked modes/runaways a problem, increase density to nl04=0.5 (or higher) 2) x2 shots Bt=4.1 T 3) x2 shots Bt=5.5 T 4) x2 shots Bt=6.7 T 5) Increase density to nl04=0.8 [or x2 the density in (A1)] and x2 shots at 6.7 T 6) x2 shots Bt=5.5 T 7) x2 shots Bt=4.1 T B: W_TH scan at fixed Ip, Bt and nl04 by varying ICRF input power 1) Using target equilibrium from (A) increase nl04 to 1.0 and apply 2 MW ICRF power from 0.6-1.3 (ie on past disruption trigger) x2 shots 2) x2 shots w/ ICRF power to 3 MW 3) apply 2.0 psi Ne puff from 0.4-0.6 seconds ICRF from 2.5-4.0 MW from 0.6-0.75 and hold at 4 MW from 0.75-1.3 for x2 shots 4) apply 2.0 psi Ne puff from 0.4-0.6 seconds ICRF from 2.5-MAX MW from 0.6-0.9 and hold at MAX MW from 0.9-1.3 for x2 shots C: Gas Jet Parameter Scan 1) Decrease gas jet pressure shot-to-shot by pumping on the plenum. In order of priority move through the following: (85:15 He/Ne, 85:15 He/Kr, 85:15 D2/Ar, pure He, pure Ar). All at 70 bar and 1.5 ms pulse length. Judging on remaining time do 1 or more shots for each bottle. 2*) Between changes in gas jet there should be time to run non gas-jet plasmas. | The run went very well and we got a ton of data to analyze. Most impressive was the repeatability of the plasma. We only had one fizzle the whole day, even after using D2 as the carrier gas. Parts (A), (B) and 2/5 of (C) were completed. Of the 31 plasmas, 29 were mitigated disruptions. At this point, the gas jet should be considered for piggy-back experiments since it doesn't affect plasma performance on subsequent shots and does not hugely affect the shot cycle.
(A) q95 scan shots: 004-013 We had to raise the lower density point to nl04=0.6 to avoid the locked modes and Ohmic H-modes (003), making the high density point nl04=1.2 shot / q95 / nl04 ------------------- 004 / 2.8 / 0.61 006 / 3.5 / 0.58 007 / 4.2 / 0.61 009 / 4.3 / 1.2 010 / 3.6 / 1.2 011 / 3.7 / 1.2 012 / 2.8 / 1.2 013 / 3.6 / 0.61 These results showed that the time between the gas jet hitting the plasma and the TQ increased with q95 and didn't vary much with density except at the high field point. (B) Wth scan shots: 014-02 We had a hard time making high stored energy plasmas. EDA's just weren't sticking around long enough and eventually we disrupted the beginning of an ELM-free H-mode in order to get the high WTH and edge Te. All of these shots were at 5.5 T so the RF and the FRCECE would work. shot / WTH [kJ] / H or L --------------- 014 / 104 / H 015 / 55 / L 017 / 107 / H 018 / 110 / L 019 / 80 / L 020 / 118 / H 021 / 136 / H 022 / 130 / H 023 / 118 / L 024 / 110 / L 025 / 176 / H 026 / 182 / H The highest stored energy shots had the longest pre-TQ and the lowest WTH had the shortest, but in the middle there wasn't a direct correlation. It's not just WTH and we'll have to look a bit closer at the profile evolution. 027 was a failed attempt at an Ne-seeded ELMy discharge from 1090922, too much radiation. We ended up with really fast gas bottle change-overs (15-20 minutes) so we only tried this once. (C) gas jet scan shots: 028-033 We were able to change to 2 of the 5 different bottles, the D2:Ar and the He:Kr before we ran out of time. We didn't bother doing the plenum pressure scan since that was done on 1071220 to a similar extent and we had fast AXUV then. All were done at nl04=0.6 shot / gas ---------- 028 / D2:Ar q95=3.6 029 / D2:Ar q95=3.6 031 / He:Kr q95=3.6 032 / He:Kr q95=4.1 033 / He:Kr q95=2.8 The D2:Ar didn't really seem much different than the He:Ar shots. The He:Kr arrived much later due to the sound speed difference and the q95 scan in He:Kr had a similar relative shift in the pre-TQ. |

| Following the loss of F15 yesterday, Steve Wolfe synthesized the signal
from other loops and recalculated all the predictors. This change seems to have worked well. We had a plasma on shot 1 that disrupted because of a locked mode. The next couple of shots were spent increasing density in an attempt to avoid the locked mode (fixed by shot 3). We had problems with hards much of the day, but generally well before 1.2 s when we turned on the MGP. I tried various gas puff and density tweaks the seemed to work for a shot or two and then the hards returned. Too much gas or nl requested density resulted in MARFE (between a MARFE and a HARD place) Magnetics indicated Bz0 was high by 4 to 8 mT from what we normally consider a good startup value, but the machine ran well anyway. On shot 28 I did change ef4 from -1300 to -1350 A since the breakdown was late.
