MP584 - Edge Turbulence before and during the L-to-H-transition

The purpose of this run is to establish or refute the spectral variation of the
electron-diamagnetic-drift-direction propagating edge turbulence â?? found
originally in run 1080313 â?? as the precursor or potentially the first stage of
a two-stage phase trans­ition and clear up its connection to the so-called I-mode

The key diagnostic is the edge GPI system, therefore there will be
NINJA puffs of D2 for all of the shots to hit 20ms after the APD trigger.
(@ t=0.9s in the beginning and
@ t=1.04s if we need to have a longer puff)
The pressure will be adjusted so as to give a good GPI contrast and introduce a minimal perturbation.
(8 psi in the beginning)

A shot will be considered successful
-if the edge plasma is sampled by the GPI APD's for at least 300ms,
so that the electron-propagating turbulence feature is clearly detectable
-if the contrast from the background light on the GPI is strong enough to show
the spectral features if this turbulence layer
-if good data are taken from the L-mode, the pre-H-mode, the ELM-free and the
subsequent EDA H-mode regime in the first half of the run day, and both in the
L-mode and I-mode, in the second half

There are four sections to this run

(to be fine adjusted)

1. Ohmic L to H transitions

in order to trigger an Ohmic L to EDA H-mode transition.

MP 584 - Edge Turbulence before and during the L-to-H transition

The run had three major objectives. First, we intended to reproduce the spectral
variation of the electron-diamagnetic-drift propagating edge turbulence that was
originally observed in shot 1080313007 just prior to the Ohmic L-H transition and
investigate whether this phenomenon depends just as much on plasma density as
does the shape of the spectrum of the same turbulence region (MP 582). Second,
we wished to observe the evolution of the edge turbulence in a steady Bt, ICRF
heated L-H transition in order to see if the spectral phenomenon is linked with
a change in q95 or rather the transition itself. And finally, we wanted to study
the edge and SOL turbulence patterns of the so-called I-mode and compare them to
those found in pre-H-mode plasmas at various plasma densities.

The key diagnostic of these experiments was the newly installed 2D fast GPI
system. Therefore the main limitation we met was the puff-induced-to-intrinsic
light contrast. Since the gas puff nozzle has been moved back by 0.5cm there has
been a clear drop in the contrast-efficiency of the puffs, limiting our regular
operation space to NL04~<0.8e20m^-2 (with a contrast >~2)
Since technically all H-mode plasmas start at this density we had very little
ability to scan the density space for this experiment.

The first part of the experiment was nevertheless successful, the Ohmic L-H
transition was observed with sufficient data in all four (L-mode, pre-H-mode,
ELMfree, EDA) phases for a clear turbulence spectrum comparison. Spectral
changes were indeed observed, although their character was different from the
one originally found.

The ICRF heated transitions produced a similar trend, but no definitive result
can be stated yet. Analysis is underway. It is worth noting that in a fairly low
density NL04=0.5e20m^-2 (L-mode) NL04=1.5e20m^-2 (EDA), RF heated plasma a
third harmonic was found to the QCM.

The I-mode studies were basically unsuccessful. Unfortunately, no cryopumping
was requested and large puffs had to be used for GPI contrast, which probably
both contributed to the difficulty accessing this confinement regime.
The potential I-modes exhibited a ~400-500eV T-pedestal.
It can be logged as a success though, that these plasmas showed an edge
turbulence structure which is unlike most L- and H-mode spectra, exhibiting
two ion-diamagnetic-drift propagating lobes and an electron-propagating lobe
in the same position at the same time (with a 10ms integration time.)

The run went quite well. This was a post-boronization run.

At the beginning of the day, EF3 would not fire. Reseating a circuit board apparently solved the problem. After that, we had reliable start-up (1 strong fizzle), and most shots made it all the way through rampdown. Outer gaps were tuned to be relatively small (mostly 5 to 10 mm) and we ran both LSN (some with ohmic H-modes) and USN topology, all at 800 kA flattop. Attempts at low density I-modes yielded shots that had relatively low H-mode threshold (e.g. 23, 24), or at lower RF power, very steady, but only mildly improved, L-mode (shots 25 - 27). The day ended with higher density, USN L-modes, with no RF (shots 31-33).
