see SL_PLAN of 1091019. We will start with (1)-(6) and then move to (10)-(16)

We will need the cryopump for the this run but not for the first group of shots.

ECDC in D2 overnight which should help cleanup some residual N2

Start with 1.5 psi of Ne in B-SIDE-LOWER. Pump and purge once to try and clean out and residual N2 from the Monday.

****REPOST OF THE 1091019 RUN PLAN****

Run Plan for MP564 - Power requirements for high confinement H-modes and the role of radiated power spatial distribution

SL: Loarte/Reinke
PO: Rowan/Hutch

This run plan covers both 1091019 and 1091020

DIAGNOSTICS:
ne/Te tools (TCI,TS, GPC1,2 FRCECE). Will be running at 5.4 T for most of both of the days.
VUV/SXR spectroscopy. B-SIDE-LOWER will be impurity puffing but if B-SIDE-UPPER can be made to work for Ar puffs a trace can be used.
Reflectometer setup for LH trans region (0.7-1.2 in ELMy and 0.5-1.0 in EDA)
LBO (Ca/F2) can fire near the end of the H-mode, but I'll have my eye on the perturbation.
NINJA can puff for turbulence/CXRS near the end of the H-mode but will likely need to use it for fueling during high density EDAs (1091020)
Divertor IR imaging for heat-flux measurements

Have N2, Ne and Ar available during the run w/o a cell access. Start with 1.0 psi Ne in B-SIDE-LOWER.

The cryopump will be needed for 1091020 (Tuesday) only.

The goal of this experiment is to create impurity seeded EDA and ELMy H-modes with net input power (P_NET=P_TOT-P_RAD) matching unseeded H-modes. Target EDA H-modes were made on 1090902 and the ELMy targets were made on 1090902 and 1090922. 1 MW ICRF ramps will be used to vary P_NET to ensure a good match. The 1090922 run focused on Ne and Ar in the EDA and Ar in the ELMy. This run will finish the Ne pressure scan in ELMy, extend the Ne gas pressure scan in EDA and complete an EDA and ELMy scan of N2 puffing. (most if not all of DAY1)

Assuming the high confinement w/ seeding is repeatable, we will then attempt to recover high input power operations at the typical C-Mod ODIV strike point location that has been problematic for FY09/10, then proceed to an ITER shape. From there we will increase current and density (possibly Bt) to maintain the EDA H-mode.

As a piggyback on this, we will be monitoring the evolution of the molybdenum vs. RF input Joules for MP568 and at the end of 1091020 will take a few shots at conditions repeating 1090827 and/or 1050610.

Will do the ELMy with Ne then N2. Will repeat the H-mode threshold scan shot and two higher unseeded target powers then move to seeding. Ninja puffs allowed in late portion of the shot.

1) Load equilibrium from 1090922021 (JFT-2M shape, nl04=0.5, Ip=800 kA). ICRF ramp from 0.5-3 MW from t=0.8-1.5 sec. Verify similar threshold and proper diagnostic/aux system operations.

2) Change RF timing ICRF ramp 2.0-2.9 MW from t=0.8-0.1.0 sec and 2.9 MW from 1.0-1.5. Repeat, replacing peak power of 2.9 MW to 3.4 MW in RF programming.

3) Enable B-SIDE-LOW 1.5 psi Ne puff from 0.6-0.8 sec. ICRF ramp 2.5-4.0 MW from t=0.8-1.0 sec and 4.0-5.0 MW from t=1.0-1.5 sec.

4) Repeat shot, decreasing Ne pressure to 1.0 and then 0.5

5) Fill B-SIDE-LOW with 3.0 psi N2 and repeat target shot from (3)

6) Move N2 pressure up/down, getting points where the ELMy->ELM-Free and then reducing.

Move to seeded EDA H-modes. Start with N2 and then Ne

7) Load equilibrium from 1090922007 (high strike point, nl04=0.8, Ip=800 kA). Run threshold scan with RF from 0.5-3.0 MW from 0.6-1.5 sec.

8) Enable N2 puff, choosing pressure based on knowledge from (5) and (6). Puff from 0.4-0.6 sec. Program ICRF to have 2.5-4.0 MW ramp from 0.6-0.8 and a 4.0-5.0 MW ramp from 0.8-1.5 sec. Scan N2 pressure to get a large range of PRAD/PTOT and H89 -> 1.0.

9) Fill B-SIDE-LOW with 1.5 psi Ne and repeat target from (8). Monitor proper change of radiating species. Repeat until clean Ne puff w/o significant N2 present. Increse Ne pressure to absurd pressure (2.5, 3.5 ->etc.) until L-mode confinement (H89~1.0) is demonstrated.

10) Modify equilibrium to see if we can run a lower strike point with seeding. Load 1090811006, lower Ip to 800 kA. Choose gas species and pressure from earlier shots showing peaking WTH and neutron rate. Modify RF programming to allow for maximum input power. Program ICRF to have 2.5-MAX MW ramp from 0.6-0.8 and remain constant until 1.5 seconds.

11) If (10) is run w/o tungsten injections then keep lower strike point otherwise return to high strike point from earlier. Increase Ip/nl04 ~ 900 kA/0.9 and then ~1.0 MA/1.0, keeping the EDA H-mode. Modify impurity gas pressure to adjust for changes in impurity transport.

Move to higher current seeded H-modes to 1) demonstrate seeding at ITER target and/or 2) push high current H-mode performance. These will be moving to high densities that usually lead to neutral pressure limits on the ICRF. To start with, the cyropump will be used with LFS fueling to try and maintain a low pressure. If high current EDA's are not obtainable this way the shape will shifted towards DN and HFS fueling via the NINJA will be added.

***TURN ON CRYO***

12) Move to ITER shape, loading 1080409016 (Ip=1.35, Bt=5.4, nl04=1.2). Tweak the outer strike point location if (10) was still showing tungsten. Do an RF power scan to get the threshold, ramping from 0.5-3.0 MW from t=0.7-1.15. Alternate starting shot is 1091006025 (Ip=1.25, Bt=5.4, nl04=1.25, fast Ip ramp)

13) Develop seeded H-mode using Ne at a reasonable pressure. Set puff timing to be from 0.5-0.7 sec. ICRF ramp from 2.5-4.0 from 0.7-0.85 and 4.0-5.0 from 0.85-1.2. Ramp power back down from 5.0-1.5 MW from 1.2-1.7 to help avoid disruption in the current ramp down. (These times are for the FY08 target. If using FY09 target, shift all start times back to 0.5 sec.)

If this recipe is are not giving reliable target EDA H-modes, develop alternate high current/density target. Starting from ITER targets or 1070829029 increase SSEP to make plasma more DN and use NINJA to fuel from the HFS.

14) Vary the Ne gas pressure to scan PRAD/PTOT, showing both a return to L-mode at high pressure and a return to bad RF/PRAD at low pressure.

15) If time switch, N2 and repeat (14)

16) Return to 1 MA target from (11) and run 2-3 shots showing confinement after a substantial RF input energy.

A very tough day. We ran into problems early and never recovered good H-mode performance that we ended with yesterday. At the end, we switched to MP579 and ran a few I-mode shots successfully demonstrating that a machine that was unable to run steady H-modes with good confinement can still run I-modes. Not a lot of physics done today, but some lessons learned.

We ran unseeded and seeded (Ne only) ELMy H-modes from 001-009 but had a significant Mo impurity. Sort of a null result w/r/t MP564, but we have a lot of data for that MP to chew on w/ EDA's before we focus on the ELMy shots.

Moved to repeat the seeded EDA shots from yesterday from 010-014 but was unable to get a steady H-mode and had problems with injections. A good demonstration that you can't seed your way out of bad wall conditions and our Mo problem is more than heat flux.

Moved to the lower strike point shape from 015-029 to try and test seeding with the strike point on the tungsten tile. There was no tungsten injections, although we weren't getting any steady H-modes and we were varying the divertor deltaTs. I think this is an encouraging result for future BORONIZED experiments with a lower strike point.

Session Leader Comments
Oct 20 2009 08:30:25:040AM1091020001Matt ReinkeRepeat of 1091019002 (JFT-2M 'grazing' shape with nl04~0.5 and Ip=800 kA). ICRF power ramp from 0.5-3.0 MW from 0.8-1.5 sec.
Oct 20 2009 09:19:16:577AM1091020001Matt ReinkeThe density is around the range of interest but a bit wobbles as the RF comes in. No H-mode transition in this shot and an injection from the inner divertor around 1.3,
Jerry says a bit of x-point creep after 1.0 seconds, Ian try to compensate a bit. Yujin says the RF can be better.

Still showing residual nitrogen on CHROMEX, CXRS and MCP despite a D2 ECDC last night.

NEXT: Repeat with some wirehead nonsense applied.
Oct 20 2009 09:36:51:643AM1091020002Matt ReinkeLarge increase in PRAD after 0.66 seconds. Looks like high-Z and degrades temperature until a disruption. This was before the ICRF so it could just be random.

NEXT: Repeat and if it happens again switch back to original 1090922021 programming.
Oct 20 2009 09:43:23:553AM1091020003Matt ReinkeFizzle :(
Oct 20 2009 10:07:38:703AM1091020004Matt ReinkeShot went just fine, got ELMy H-mode, although 2 MW threshold higher than before (1 MW on 1090922021). Mo injections and higher Mo in the H-mode possibly pushing up threshold.

NEXT: same target, unseeded with ICRF @ 2.0-2.9 MW from 0.6-0.8 and 2.9 MW from 0.8-1.5
Oct 20 2009 10:15:48:550AM1091020005Matt ReinkeGot the ELMy H-mode but had evolving PRAD and input power. D-ANT drops out and lots of early Mo.

NEXT: Increase steady RF power to 3.4 MW
Oct 20 2009 10:28:17:960AM1091020006Matt ReinkeHad a Fe injection that killed the plasma early in the H-Mode, but Mo was already on it's way up. The K-LIM tile has been maroon hot all day so perhaps Mo is from there and if we seed it will drop.

NEXT: Start the seeding. 1.4 psi Ne from 0.4-0.6 and ICRF 2.5-4.0 MW from 0.6-0.8 and 4.0-5.0 MW from 0.8-1.5.
Oct 20 2009 10:34:32:450AM1091020007Matt ReinkeFizzle :(
Oct 20 2009 10:57:48:660AM1091020008Matt ReinkeDisrupted early. Significant Mo and some W in this discharge. H-Mode but little to no ELMs.

NEXT: Delay start of ICRF till 0.7 seconds and repeat.
Oct 20 2009 11:10:48:820AM1091020009Matt ReinkeSlightly improved over the last shot early on, but after 1.0 sec. getting large injections and Mo increases. Looking at AXA and WB2AX there is a large edge emitter. The K-LIM tile is getting a large power flux.

NEXT: Decrease pressure 0.9 psi see if early ELMs return.

Oct 20 2009 11:18:37:277AM1091020010Matt ReinkeYuck. Mo and W are killing me on these shots and we're not getting anything worthwhile. PUNT!

NEXT: Repeat the Ne-seeded EDA from yesterday (012) w/ 2.0 psi Ne. Compare to yesterday's to see if Mo is higher before moving to the lower strike point shape.
Oct 20 2009 11:48:18:383AM1091020012Matt ReinkeThe early H-modes have low Mo but after 0.9 Mo increases substantially. The K-LIM tile still has a VERY large deltaT (~400). Still getting edge emission on AXA.

NEXT: Repeat and then try and change outer gap if still a problem.
Oct 20 2009 12:04:10:810PM1091020013Matt ReinkeThis shot disrupted after the Mo injections start ~1.0 sec. Possibly something hanging in around the AB limiter?

NEXT: Back off on the Ne puff to 1.4 psi. Increase the outer gap by 0.5 cm. Increase nl04 target to 0.85 and turn off NINJA.
Oct 20 2009 12:07:39:970PM1091020014Matt Reinkeearly disruption

NEXT: repeat w/o disruption
Oct 20 2009 12:32:11:730PM1091020015Matt ReinkeStill getting transient H-modes so it won't be a good comparison to previous seeded runs. Getting the injection on AXA right before disruption. AXUV midplane profile is nearly flat, not hollow indicative of substantial Ne

NEXT: Move to lower strike point, 1 MA shot (1090811006).
Oct 20 2009 12:45:05:717PM1091020016Matt ReinkeEarly disruption

NEXT: Raise target density to nl04~1.05, turn off RF and B-SIDE-LOW, let IMPINJ fire at 1.2
Oct 20 2009 12:52:50:457PM1091020017Matt Reinkefizzle...it's one of those days
Oct 20 2009 01:08:49:413PM1091020018Matt ReinkeFINALLY a good shot. Injection at 1.2 is the IMPINJ.

NEXT: 3 RF pulses D,E and J separate to try and see if there's s problem.
Oct 20 2009 01:24:06:890PM1091020019Matt ReinkeFull length shot again. Got a number of injections during the RF pulses, but nothing localized to AXA this time.

NEXT: Stack RF pulses, add Ne seeding from 0.4-0.6 w/ 1.4 psi
Oct 20 2009 01:53:52:133PM1091020021Matt ReinkeEarly disruption at ~0.75 seconds. PRAD choppy but under control till 0.717 when I large injection came in. No sign of W

NEXT: Remove D-ANT from the mix (MAX now ~4.0) based on the injections seen on 019. Increase Ne to 1.9 psi.
Oct 20 2009 02:17:33:097PM1091020023Matt ReinkeDisruption at 1.2 seconds. Very ratty J-ANT pulse, very low input power. Ne clearly getting in before the ICRF.

NEXT: Same target, lower ICRF thru J-ANT, MAX~3.5 MW.
Oct 20 2009 02:33:32:010PM1091020024Matt ReinkeA post-disruption plasma and one that makes it to ramp down!! The emissivity profile on the AXUV diodes is hollow and Mo brightness is low (< 50) for most of these shots. No evidence of W lines either. Divertor deltaT is down.

NEXT: Lower Ne pressure to 1.0 psi.
Oct 20 2009 02:42:59:950PM1091020025Matt ReinkeAnother full length shot but still choppy RF. Divertor deltaT increases. Perhaps we're just not doing enough? Easy to test that theory.

NEXT: Increase Ne pressure 3.6 psi
Oct 20 2009 02:55:40:190PM1091020026Matt ReinkeEarly disruption due to too much Ne gas. Check. Yijun says the ELM-Free H-modes making it difficult for steady RF.

NEXT: Reduce current to 900 kA, nl04~0.95 to try and bring back more EDA. Reduce Ne puff pressure to 0.9 psi.
Oct 20 2009 03:07:30:303PM1091020027Matt ReinkeMore EDA-ish, longer H-modes. Higher delta's in the divertor.

NEXT: Same target plasma, add 1 MW D-ANT.
Oct 20 2009 03:21:42:263PM1091020028Matt ReinkeD-ANT was added without and killer injections but less steady H-modes and poorer J-ANT performance. Mo getting up really high ~ 100 counts.

NEXT: Change to N2 puff to see if there's a difference. 10 psi, steady puff from 0.5-1.1.
Oct 20 2009 03:42:37:600PM1091020029Matt ReinkeAnother impurity ridden shot. The tokamak is clearly too dirty to be run in H-mode.

NEXT: Demonstrate the I-mode can be run when an H-mode is hopeless. Load up 1091016033 (no cryopump). Switching to MP579.
Oct 20 2009 03:57:45:307PM1091020030Matt ReinkeNot half bad for a quick changeover of MP. The ICRF didn't have the correct steps but still was very steady. The density was too high, nl04~1.25, compared to ~1.1 from 1091016.

NEXT: Repeat fixing RF timing and adding cryopump.
Oct 20 2009 04:08:14:890PM1091020031Matt Reinkefizzle, looks like a cyroburp

NEXT: Repeat
Oct 20 2009 04:39:28:807PM1091020033Matt ReinkeBrief I-modes before the H-modes. Surprising at this power level.

NEXT: Increase current to 1.3 MA.
Oct 20 2009 04:54:27:547PM1091020034Matt ReinkeGood I-mode shot only a little injection spoiled it.

NEXT: end since the RF is :(

fast current rise, some runaways, if it hadn't disrupted I'd raise the puff.

Next: drop pg4, risk the runaways

Oct 20 2009 02:25:27:647PM1091020024Steve Wolfe
Shot#24: pg4 from 23 to 20msec, raise pg3 in seg1

result: plasma into rampdown, multiple H-modes, rf still choppy (J and E)
runaways as expected, nl04 just under Ian's magic 5e18 at .02

next: raise pg4 a tad

Oct 20 2009 02:40:33:853PM1091020025Steve Wolfe
Shot#25: pg4 from 20 to 22msec,
reduce neon to 1psi

Result: plasma to 1.84sec, multiple H-modes,
runaways better but still there.

Next: raising neon to 3.5psi, raise pg4 a bit more.

Oct 20 2009 02:49:05:797PM1091020026Steve Wolfe
Shot#26: pg4 from 22 to 23msec (I may be pushing my luck),
increase neon to 3.5psi

Result: disrupts at 0.6sec, still some runaways

Next: back to 20msec on pg4, reduce the neon

Oct 20 2009 03:05:00:600PM1091020027Steve Wolfe
Shot#27: pg4 from 23 to 20msec
Ip to 900kA. nl04 from 1.05 to .95
Neon to 1psi
Ian is back, I'm blaming the upcoming fizzle on him.

Result: plasma full length, no runaways, multiple H-modes,
J still faulting, so is E somewhat.
nl04 at .02sec is 6.3e18, satisfying the IHH runaway criterion
Ian left the room again, so I guess I'm still in the hotseat.

Next: pg4 back to 22msec

Oct 20 2009 03:14:29:870PM1091020028Steve Wolfe
Shot#28: pg4 from 20 to 22msec
No target changes, RF turning D back on

Result: plasma full length, runaways are back- didn't raise pg4 enough.
Possibly a new record on number of h-modes

Next: Ian is back and taking over.

Oct 20 2009 03:32:23:877PM1091020028Ian HutchinsonPlasma.

Hutch is back. Raise fill puff to 24ms.
Bside-lower puf to .5-1.1s.
Oct 20 2009 03:48:46:630PM1091020029Ian HutchinsonPlasma to rampdown.

Load segment 2 from 1091016033
Oct 20 2009 04:04:22:637PM1091020030Ian HutchinsonPlasma disrupts at 1.16s.

Moving to cryopump usage. Load segment 1 from 1091016033.
Oct 20 2009 04:16:41:783PM1091020031Ian HutchinsonFizzle because cryo let go just before the shot.

Repeat.
Oct 20 2009 04:28:57:960PM1091020032Ian HutchinsonFizzle. Same again.
Oct 20 2009 04:45:35:560PM1091020033Ian HutchinsonPlasma to rampdown.

Raise Ip to 1.3MA.
Oct 20 2009 04:54:24:030PM1091020034Ian HutchinsonPlasma disrupts in rampdown.
