Start with 1091021005 for as basis for discharges. It is a 0.8 MA discharge with the strike point moved to avoid the W tile and an upper strike that maximizes the cryopump effectiveness. Would like to keep the right gap is 1.5 cm, kapa~1.6, lower triangularity ~0.5, and upper triangularity 0.35-0.4 when in LSN configuration. 1. Start with 1 MA discharge, target density nl04~1 at 0.8 s and ramp plasma density to 1.4 at 1.5 s. If neutral pressure limit is not reached with standard low field side gas fueling raise target density to 1.1 at 0.8 s and ramp to 1.6 at 1.5 s. 2. Using same shape, lower target density to nl04~0.8 at 0.6 s, D&E at 1 MW, and vary NINJA programming with plenum pressure 20 psi: (3 shots) a. NINJA puff start at 0.6 s for 0.1 s b. NINJA puff start at 0.6 s for 0.2 s c. NINJA puff start at 0.6 s for 0.4 s 3. Repeat step 2 with DN discharge based on 1091021005 (zcur ~ -7-9 mm) 4. Repeat step 2 with DN and cryopump enabled. 5. Repeat step 2 with IWL discharge choose either DN or DN with cryo 6. Repeat #2 with target density to nl04~0.5 at 0.6 s. If successful raise/lower plenum pressure and repeat 2 with best condition. Switch to He if unsuccessful with lowering the neutral pressure 7. Fuel from main gas system and obtain highest neutral pressure possible. a. Take several discharges to switch over. (5 shots) b. Reduce plasma current if unable to reach neutral pressure limit using gas fueling alone.

Start with an 800kA LSN discharge, small to moderate SSEP. Cryopump OFF for first part of run (until step 4). Maybe pick an example like 1091022011 or just extend the initial zcur from 1091021005or 008. Probably move BOF earlier. Adjust outer gap to ~15mm, density program to 1.0e20 at 0.8sec, then ramping up to 1.4e20 at 1.5sec, all using B-main (PG3) fueling; turn on D gain in nl04. Trying to calibrate neutral pressure "limit" of each antenna with target density using PG3 fueling. If neutral limit is not encountered, then raise target density to 1.1e20@0.8sec,1.6e20@1.5sec. Check limits on D and E separately. While I'm doing this, run SSEP predictor (zero gain) on wire 11 with zero target, just in case I want to use this at step 3. 2. Compare fueling with inner-wall NINJA puff. Reduce NL04 target to 0.8e20@0.6sec, flat from there, and try puffing NINJA with plenum=20psi a) t=0.6sec,dt=0.1sec b) t=0.6sec,dt=0.2sec c) t=0.6sec,dt=0.4sec 3. Change to DN discharge. Most likely use the equilibrium from step 1 and change Zcur. If I start with 1091021005 the magic value should be around -.007. Monitor SSEP observer signal (with zero target) and consider turning it on, depending on how well it stays DN with just ZCUR and xpoint control. repeat step 2 with NINJA puffs. 4. Turn on cryopump (increase pg4 in seg1 to 50msec), and repeat NINJA sequence, as in 3 (and 2). 5. Go to inner wall limited discharge. Turn off SSEP feedback, if it was used, and change CLEARIN and RCUR to make a limited shape with outer gap still ~1.5cm. Not sure if SL wants cryo for this one or not, pumping might be less efficient, but might be worth a try just to see. 6. Back to DN, either with or without cryo, depending on what worked, repeat #2 with reduced early target density nl04=5e19@0.6sec If successful (?) repeat with higher and/or lower plenum pressure 7. If unsuccessful in lowering neutral pressure (2-6), put Helium in pg3 and go back to fueling from there. Run plan says to obtain highest neutral pressure possible, but I think he means with plasma, so I shouldn't just turn the valve on full and leave it. If we get this far, change the nl04 gains (start with P=D=2, I think) and aim for 2e20@1.5sec, go from there. I'm assuming that SL intends this to be done in DN shape.

Run Summary Despite a shortened run, we accomplished the first two parts of the run plan. As expected, inner wall puff alone did not significantly reduce the neutral pressure for given density. This is consistent with the picture that the observed pressure is a result of plasma transport. The inner wall fueling did allow easier access to higher density discharges but to lower the neutral pressure a sink is likely needed. The EF2L contractor failed the discharge before we were going to try the cryopump. At 0.75 MW, neutral pressure limit appeared to be much higher - target density reached 1.75 x 10^20 on NL04 than at higher power. At the neutral pressure limit, the match suddenly changes - likely the cause of the first fault.

Physics Operator Summary for Friday, Oct 23 MP#581 High density RF SL: Wukitch PO: wolfe EO: Parkin, Pierson Things were really going well until lucky shot#13, when the EF2L supply faulted and burned up its 3-phase contactor. This is the same supply that had a similar failure last month. Repair estimate is over 4 hours, and since the cause is still undetermined the run was terminated. We got into the 3rd step of the run plan, and actually learned some things about the rf/neutral/density issue. See SL_SUMMARY for details of that. On the physop side, the machine ran well. The startup was left unchanged from yesterday, and performed perfectly, no runaways, no fizzles despite some high pressures at the end of shots and ramp-down disruptions. I instituted derivative gain (D=2) along with the standard proportional gain (P=2) on the EF2_by_EF4 wire, and this seemed to help suppress some of the swings on these currents during the flattop. This should be tried on shots with more violent changes in parameters to see if the loop stability is actually improved. The initial lower single null discharges ran well with modest negative bias (SSEP~-5mm), which wasn't too surprising. For the DN discharges zcur=-0.01 seemed to give good double null. I activated SSEP control with moderate gain P=2 from 0.6sec to EOF, and the SSEP error stayed near zero, but it wasn't clear how much this really mattered since the ZCUR was probably sufficient by itself. The ZXU gain was not reduced from P=6, so the SSEP control was definitely sub-dominant. For the shots using pg3 for density feedback the gains P=8,D=6 gave very nice flat density for flat programming, and did a good job on the density ramps as well. The PG3 also had feedforward before 0.6sec on all shots and constant at 20V to EOF for the ramps. An interesting effect was noted that when the RF faulted at the "neutral pressure limit" on shot#2 the efficiency of the gas fueling seemed to increase. With NINJA (we didn't try DN with PG3) the DN cases got to higher density for the same puff than the LSN. This is consistent with earlier observations that the density increased when the plasma went to DN and/or USN. We didn't quite get to the cryopump part of the run, so that remains to be done when we come back up in November. Scorecard: No power tests 0 Duds 0 Fizzles 0 Plasmas 13 ============ == Shots 13
