Assuming the OH2 tests and ohmic discharges look reasonable, we will start testing and conditioning J antenna at 50 MHz. fill B-side upper with 15 psi He3 Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) If J works and the H fraction is reasonable we will start on comparing H-modes with D(He3) and D(H).

Run Summary Despite the usual accumulation of gremlins - 4 separate RF problems (1. FMIT#1 fast vacuum breaker failed to close. 2. FFT computer thought it had no memory/different amount. 3. FMIT#3 stub tuner controller failed. 4. FMIT#3 FPA bias controller failed.), we were able to bring J antenna back into service at 50 MHz. We also scanned the He3 fraction by varying the puff length (injected at 0.2 sec). We scanned up to 300 msec and down to 75 msec. Mode conversion was detected via break-in-slope analysis from FRCECE at all levels but was weakest at 75 msec. On #027, we appeared to have effective minority heating in USN L-mode discharge with 4.5 keV electrons but following discharges at same puff were significantly less effective.

This run followed a 2 week shutdown, which included an up-to-argon vent. After baking and intensive ECDC over the weekend before the run, the first shot went off full length, as programmed. This shot, shot 2 since shot 1 was used for a power supply test, was with Ohmic heating only. Immediately after this shot, we went directly to part 2 of the run plan, which was to bring the RF systems into operation. This went very well, and by the end of the day we were coupling ~ 3.5 MW from E and J antennas. During the shutdown, the J-port system had been converted to 50 MHz, which required He3 for 5.4 T resonance. He3 was injected first on shot 5 and He3 pulsing continued until the end of the run. The only problem with the shots today was a persistent tendency for runaways early in the shot. Shot to shot variations ranged over 4 orders of magnitude, even though no changes were made in the programming. Attempts to reduce the runaways by early gas injection were marginally effective, and increasing the fill pressure pulse to 30 ms produced the lone fizzle of the day. There were two delays each of ~ 1 hour during the run, the first due to a problem with control of the J3 stub tuner, the other due to a problem with a PC used to control the FFT. Scorecard: 28 plasma attempts, of which 18 were full length, 9 disrupted (including 3 in rampdown) and 1 fizzled. All but one of the disruptions occurred relatively early in the run, during the process of bringing the RF up to the 3.5 MW level after the 2 week shutdown and argon vent.
