MP508 - Evaluation of D(3He) heating Our goal is to compare and evaluate D(3He) heating relative to D(H) heating over a range of conditions. 1. Begin with L-mode USN discharges at 0.8 MA like discharge 1091110030. Start with 100 ms He3 puff. 1.1 Adjust B-field to have minority resonances straddle magnetic axis. 1.2 Scan He fraction - raise BT field to keep mode conversion near axis. 1.3 Vary RF power mixture - 3 MW total - 2 MW J+1 MW D/E, 1 MW J+2 MW D/E, 1.5 MW from each 2. EDA H-modes similar to discharge 1091019023. Again start with 100 ms He3 puff. 1.1 Adjust B-field to have minority resonances straddel magnetic axis. 1.2 Scan He fraction - do we need more or less He3 to maintain minority absorption? 1.3 Scan RF power mixture - 3 MW total 1.4 Scan RF power mixture as done on 1091019023 - compare plasma performance 3. Increase plasma current to 1 MA and evaluate performance at 1 MA as done for MP568. - need to be ready to use impurity seeding. monitor Prad, moly brightness 1.1 Scan RF power mixture 1.2 Scan He fraction

The main result is that He3 minority heating is less effective than H minority heating. Even in L-mode discharges, the plasma heating effectiveness for H minority absorption was significantly higer than He minority. Simplistically, the initial low single pass absorption makes the operational space more limited. Reasonable heating effectiveness was obtained but required either pre-heating with D/E antenna or neon.
