MP585 Low Bt Discharge Development with 50 MHz ICRF Heating

Goal: establish discharges using Bt = 3.4 T from startup thru to end of flattop utilizing 50 MHz ICRF heating (H-minority), obtaining H-modes in flattop and rampup, at lower plasma currents of 450 and 600 kA.

Recover discharge from MP556 Low Bt Startup and Discharge Development, Ip = 600 kA (1090710010) (2 shots)

Incorporate any startup improvements such as 40 ms crowbar, early divert time, large bore, smooth Ip ramp and reproducible density rise, from run day 1090903 MP 576 Improvement of ITER-like Discharge Startup. (3 shots)

1) establish ohmic rampup baseline at Ip = 600 kA (2 shots)
a. rampup Ip in 500 ms
b. nL targeted to 0.5 x 10^20 /m2 at end of Ip ramp
c. plasma elongation in flattop is 1.7-1.8
d. flattop duration 0.7 s,
e. standard C-Mod rampdown duration 0.5 s, power termination

2) establish ohmic rampup with full ICRF power at end of rampup (or slightly earlier), with appropriate density to enter H-mode as soon as possible in flattop phase. (2 shots)

3) setup ICRF power trajectory in the the rampup avoiding high radiation, utilizing density established in #2, full 3 MW ICRF beginning at end of rampup
a. 1.0 MW at 100-120 ms, 2.0 MW at 220 ms (2 shots)
b. 1.0 MW at 100-120 ms, 2.0 MW at 220 ms, and 3.0 MW at 320 ms (3 shots)

4) adjusting density nL > 0.6x10^20 /m2 to access H-mode during the ramp, inject ICRF power during the rampup, full 3 MW ICRF beginning at end of rampup
a. 1.0 MW at 100-120 ms, 2.0 MW at 220 ms (2 shots)
b. 1.0 MW at 100-120 ms, 2.0 MW at 220 ms, and 3.0 MW at 320 ms (3 shots)
c. possible shifting of ICRF timing

5) establish ohmic baseline at Ip = 450 kA (1 shot)

6) establish ohmic rampup with full ICRF at end of rampup, with appropriate density to enter H-mode as soon as possible in flattop (1 shot)


7) apply ICRF heating trajectories from 600 kA cases in rampup for Ip = 450 kA, with full 3 MW ICRF beginning at end of rampup, and density setting to produce H-modes in rampup (4 shots)

8) establish ohmic baseline at Ip = 725 kA (1 shot)

9) establish ohmic rampup with full ICRF at end of rampup, with appropriate density to enter H-mode as soon as possible in flattop (1 shot)

10) apply ICRF heating trajectories from 600 kA cases in rampup for Ip = 725 kA, with full 3 MW ICRF beginning at end of rampup, and density setting to produce H-modes in rampup (4 shots)

Bt = 3.4 T
Examined Ip = 600 and 450 kA, rampup in 500 ms
ICRF power up to 3.0 MW (J-port only), but 2.5 MW was better
used step ups in ICRF power during rampup beginning at 120 ms
early diverts at 100 ms
good plasma shaping, kappa about 1.7, gaps were good and steady

obtained EDA H-modes in flattop, also some choppy ELM-free cases
obtained routine H-modes in rampup beginning at 200 ms, ELM-free
bridging of the rampup H-mode to the flattop H-mode was a challenge
are those ELMs in the last discharge 032 (J. Rice)??

reliable discharge programming and development allowed us to get much more routine behavior

start with Ip = 600 kA

003 ohmic L-mode reference at 600 kA

009, 011, 013 ohmic rampup,H-mode flattop, EDA H-mode, ICRF power up to 2.5 MW in flattop

Overall a good run day, several full discharges, flattop and rampup H-modes at low Bt = 3.4 T. The Low Bt startup has been married to the early divert, and has resulted in routine production of H-modes in rampup, something that was highly random in the past at these plasma currents. The q95 values are 4.0 at 600 kA and 4.6 at 450 kA. ICRF worked well with long 1.4 s pulses.

A very successful day of low field startup with early diversion.

This run puts to rest the superstition that low-field startup is unreliable.
We had not a single fizzle even after disruptions with 3T initiation. RIP!

Shots had diversion at about 0.1s which was moved somewhat earlier
as the day wore on. I found that one problem with early diversion in this
setup is that B_R is being controlled until about 65ms in segment 1.
This prevents one moving the plasma down to make an early lower divertor.

Beware, most shots today are using segments 1 and 3. Don't just import
segment 2 and hope you've got the right thing.

Reliable H-modes in current ramp were obtained which made the Session
Leader happy.
