| Cryopump is required for this run.
FRCECE and GPC are critical for this run diagnostics - primary magnetic field will be ~5.2 T. All transmitters required - we will wait for FMIT#1 (D antenna) to be fixed this morning. 1. Optimize initial target plasma for high central temperature and moderate density. Need to stay out of H-mode. a. Start with 1091118020 - target density nl04~0.7, cryopump on b. increase D/E power to 3 MW, J power to ~2.6 MW, Ar puff at 0.6 for 0.15 s c. scan density - best mix of high electron temperature and controlled Prad d. scan plasma current 1.3 MA (disruption issue?), 0.8 MA, 0.6 MA 2. Using optimum conditions, modulate J power a. Widely spaced, full power switch off b. periodic modulation, slow compared to sawtooth period - 25%, 50%,100% power modulation c. periodic modulation, fast compared to sawtooth period - 25%, 50%,100% power modulation 3. Repeat under optimum conditions using +/-90deg |

| After a delayed start to fix FMIT#1 fused fast breaker control
circuit, we got initially good FWEH results with Ar puff and then tried to optimize. Discharges 002-004 are the best FWEH examples we have but and then we made a mess. The details are that we tried to utilize Ne at a constant level but this appeared to be elusive. We then returned to Ar puff at 1 psi plenum pressure and plasma response was better. By shot 019, the plasma could tolerate no Ar and the J antenna without impurity seeding injected impurities and evolved lots of gas. The startup was plague by lots of runaways which was not good. We also lost the FFT on 010 so the match was reasonable for E antenna but it did not follow the load. |

| We started a little more than an hour late this morning since time was required to fix the fmit#1 breaker (we could not spin up alternator with the alc2 breaker open). By shot 04 we were doing ok with a full length plasma, lots of argon as required for the MP, and no hards. Then on shot 05 the hards saturated early and the plasma was lost by 250 ms. Shots 24 and 25 late in the day had very similar behavior. The next plasma attempt was shot 08, in which the argon was replaced with neon, but it only lasted for 700 ms. The next full length shot was 10, but neon was not seen in the plasma until very late in the discharge. We had several full length plasmas until shot 15 when the discharges disrupted early until shot 19 for which we disabled the argon. Plasmas were intermittent the rest of the day with several lasting less than 200 ms with hards starting at 20 to 30 ms. Increasing the prefill did not help, but field tweaks may have if we had more time to try.
The mystery for the day was the very different behavior of argon and neon. Argon was easily seen by the spectrometry, but not neon. A probable explanation is different pumping speeds to the cryopump. Besides issues with disruptions, we also had problems controlling the density. A combination of impurity puffing and cryopumping seems to have made control difficult. We tried different prop gains on nl_04 feedback without success. Gains as low a 3 were tried which resulted in never reaching the target. no power 06, 07 --- data system issues fizzles 09,11,17,23 |
