1. Establish discharge using 1091112034 as a basis with 2.5 MW from D+E antennas and 2.5 MW from J in heating phase. (10 shots)
Neon may be needed to limit injections and faults.
Raise plasma current to avoid H-mode if needed.
Scan density down to maximize fast ion energy. - monitor Prad/Mo brightness
Scan 3He to minimize mode conversion and maximize ion energy.

2. Using developed discharge, scan the J antenna phase with 2.5 MW from D+E, 2.5 MW from J antenna, Ip=0.8 MA and BT~5.5->5.7 T. (6 shots)

3. Scan the J antenna phase in discharges with 2.5 MW from D+E, 1.5 MW from J antenna, and BT~5.5->5.7.(6 shots)

4. Once the critical BT field is identified, perform power ramp to assess power required for sawtooth pacing for fixed BT. Compare different antenna phases (6 shots).

5. Repeat 2 for Ip=1 MA and 1.3 MA time permitting.

We were able to make good progress investigating sawtooth
stabilization/destabilization with 3He minority absorption near the
q=1 surface. We completed a phase scan with He monitor indicating
~100 a.u. concentration and PCI saw no evidence of mode converted
waves. For -90deg phasing (waves in counter current direction), the
sawteeth grew larger with the 3He resonance inside the q=1 surface and
shorter with the resonance outside the q=1 surface. For +90deg, the
response was opposite with sawteeth short then becoming long. The
amplitude was also smaller for +90deg. Heating phasing behaved
similarly to +90deg. This phase dependence is opposite from central H
minority heating where the sawtooth period can be
lengthened/shortened. This suggests the mechanism is not diffusion of
fast particles in space. We also attempted to scan He3 fraction to
lower concentrations but ran out of time - we lost several discharges
to locked modes, MARFEs, and ratty RF performance. An interesting
observation is that the neutron rate was highest for heating phase,
next +90deg phase, and the lowest was -90deg phase. In the future we
would like to complete the He3 scan to lower concentration, with lower
Zeff, power scan, and larger initial sawteeth.

Run summary for Monday 2009/11/23

MP588 - Evaluation of ICRF sawtooth pacing techniques

Session leaders: S. Wukitch
Physics operator: R. Granetz

The tokamak ran reasonably well today. The ICRF also ran well, with a clean
5 MW on nearly all shots, perhaps thanks to the neon puffing that we were
doing. There were several operational issues today which rendered the data
less than stellar. There was a persistent high level of hard x-rays early
in the discharge, which seems to be an ongoing problem in the last few weeks.
None of the PG3 gas tweaks or voltage programming tweaks that we tried
today did any good. Eventually we found that raising the pre-fill enough
(to about 35 ms or more) solved the problem for a while, even though this
has not worked so well on other recent run days. We also had a curious
locked mode problem on a few shots for reasons that we didn't understand,
and there were large marfes on a number of shots that caused undesirable
cooling. I also made some physop errors, including not loading one change,
and changing the Ne/Ar pulse duration instead of the He3 pulse duration on
two shots.

Additional last-minute tweaks made to first shot:
 - decrease He3 puff duration to 100 ms, starting at t=0.3 s
 - set nl_04 to 0.7e20 m-2

Nov 23 2009 09:19:38:550AM1091123001Robert Granetz
Shot 01 -- Fizzle. I loaded the startup from the end of Friday, which must have been running with the cryopump.
Today we're not using the cryopump, so the pre-fill was much too high.

Next shot: reduce pre-fill pulse to 27 ms; also reduce PG3 gas programming in seg 1

Nov 23 2009 09:22:24:753AM1091123002Robert Granetz
Shot 02 -- Fizzle. Somehow I didn't properly load the change to the pre-fill. The change to PG3 did load
           properly. Physop error.

Next shot: load the correct prefill pulse this time (27 ms)

Nov 23 2009 09:41:24:253AM1091123003Robert Granetz
Shot 03 -- Plasma, full length. Upper null; 0.8 MA, 5.6 T, 0.7e20 m-2. Prf=5.0 MW from D,E, & J.
One short H-mode. Neon is not yet turned on.

Next shot: no DPCS changes; Steve is changing the RF waveforms a bit

Nov 23 2009 09:51:46:940AM1091123004Robert Granetz
Shot 04 -- Plasma, full length. 0.8 MA, 5.6 T, 0.7e20 m-2, USN. Prf=5.0 MW. Three short H-modes.

Next shot: enable the neon valve

Nov 23 2009 10:12:50:817AM1091123005Robert Granetz
Shot 05 -- Plasma, full length. 0.8 MA, 5.6 T, USN. Prf=5.1 MW. 3 short H-modes. Lots of early
hard x-rays on this shot, unlike the previous shots today. Neon is being puffed
           starting at t=0.4 s.

Next shot: program a small ramp up to 5.8 T in Btor starting at t=1.2 s

Nov 23 2009 10:22:05:990AM1091123006Robert Granetz
Shot 06 -- Plasma, full length. 0.8 MA, 5.6 T with a small ramp to 5.73 T; USN; neon puffing. J-port faulted
alot. Lots of hard x-rays, but less than the previous shot.

Next shot: no DPCS changes; repeat to get better J-port performance

Nov 23 2009 10:43:05:660AM1091123007Robert Granetz
Shot 07 -- Plasma, nearly full length.  0.8 MA, 5.6 T with a small ramp to 5.73 T; USN; neon puffing.  Prf=5.1 MW;
D,E,J all ran very well. Some early hard x-rays.

Next shot: tweak the late Btor ramp; also increase CLEARIN by 3 mm (and increase RCUR
by 1.5 mm to keep outer gap unchanged)

Nov 23 2009 10:57:39:957AM1091123008Robert Granetz
Shot 08 -- Plasma, full length.  0.8 MA, 5.6 T with a small ramp to 5.75 T; USN; neon puffing.  Prf=5.0 T;
nice RF performance. Sawteeth are noticeably longer. Marfe went away.

Next shot: tweak late Btor ramp up a little more

Nov 23 2009 11:07:56:690AM1091123009Robert Granetz
Shot 09 -- Plasma, nearly full length.  0.8 MA, 5.6 T with a small ramp to 5.84 T; USN; neon puffing.  Prf=5.0 MW;
nice RF performance; lots of early hard x-rays...these seem to come and go randomly fro shot-to-shot

Next shot: no DPCS changes; Steve is switching RF phasing

Nov 23 2009 11:22:57:817AM1091123010Robert Granetz
Shot 10 -- Plasma, nearly full length.  0.8 MA, 5.6 T with a small ramp to 5.83 T; USN; neon puffing.  Prf=5.0 MW;
some faulting on J; lots of early hard x-rays; big marfe is back

Next shot: add 0.5 psi of argon to the B-side-lower plenum; tweak nl_04 to 0.65e20 m-2

Nov 23 2009 11:30:22:380AM1091123011Robert Granetz
Shot 11 -- Plasma, disrupted at t=0.68 s, before any RF turns on. Argon?

Next shot: disable B-side-lower

Nov 23 2009 11:48:56:317AM1091123012Robert Granetz
Shot 12 -- Plasma, nearly full length. 0.8 MA, 5.6 T with late ramp to 5.83 T; USN. No neon (or argon)
puffed on this shot. No marfe. No early hard x-rays.

Next shot: turn B-side-lower valve back on, but shorten the pulse to 100 ms

Nov 23 2009 11:58:09:427AM1091123013Robert Granetz
Shot 13 -- Plasma, full length. 0.8 MA, 5.6 T with late ramp to 5.83 T, USN, neon puffing (w/some argon as
well). Prf=5.0 MW. Huge early hard x-ray signal, even though the previous shot had none.

Nov 23 2009 01:27:12:333PM1091123019Robert Granetz
Shot 19 -- Plasma, full length. 0.8 MA, 5.6 T with late ramp to 5.80 T, USN, neon. Huge early hard
x-ray signal, but actually better than the previous shot. Prf=5.0 MW.

I'm back as physics operator after this shot.

Next shot: no DPCS changes

Nov 23 2009 01:50:38:473PM1091123020Robert Granetz
Shot 20 -- Plasma, but disrupted at t=0.37 s. The cognescenti claim it's a locked mode.

Next shot: add early gas via PG3 programming

Nov 23 2009 01:59:25:363PM1091123021Robert Granetz
Shot 21 -- Plasma, disrupted at t=0.72 s. This looks like a locked mode...no sawtoothing.

Next shot: tweak early gas programming and nl_04 programming between 0.2 and 0.3 s.

Nov 23 2009 02:10:25:660PM1091123022Robert Granetz
Shot 22 -- Plasma, full length. 0.8 MA, 5.6 T with late ramp to 5.83 T, USN, neon. Prf=5.0 MW.
           Fewer early hard x-rays.

Next shot: reduce Ne/Ar puff duration to 75 ms

Nov 23 2009 02:28:39:440PM1091123023Robert Granetz
Shot 23 -- Plasma, full length. 0.8 MA, 5.6 T with late ramp to 5.83 T, USN, neon. Prf=5.0 MW.
           Bad startup...almost choked.

Next shot: add -10 A to IC_EF4 (i.e. set to -1290 A); decrease Ne/Ar puff to 60 ms

Nov 23 2009 02:40:34:707PM1091123024Robert Granetz
Shot 24 -- Plasma, full length. 0.8 MA, 5.6 T with late ramp to 5.83 T, USN, neon. On this shot and the
preceding shot I decreased the Ne/Ar puff, but Steve actually wanted me to decrease the He3 puff.
Another physop mistake. The startup was much better, although the early runaways are bad.

Next shot: reduce He3 pulse to 60 ms, and set the Ne/Ar puff back to 100 ms; also tweak
early EF3 preprogrammed voltage as suggested by Steve Wolfe

Nov 23 2009 02:54:22:130PM1091123025Robert Granetz
Shot 25 -- Plasma, full length. 0.8 MA, 5.6 T with late ramp to 5.83 T, USN, neon. Prf=5.0 MW.
Huge early hard x-rays, so the EF3 voltage tweak didn't help.

Next shot: disable the He3 valve (B-side-upper); tweak early OH1 voltage programming as
           suggested by Steve Wolfe

Nov 23 2009 03:07:31:957PM1091123026Robert Granetz
Shot 26 -- Plasma, full length. 0.8 MA, 5.6 T with late ramp to 5.83 T, USN, neon. Lots of faulting
on J-port. Huge early hard x-ray signal, so the OH1 voltage tweak didn't do anything.

Next shot: turn He3 valve back on (B-side-upper); start the late Btor ramp a little earlier (t=0.9 s) to
           try getting to 6.0 T

Nov 23 2009 03:30:05:690PM1091123027Robert Granetz
Shot 27 -- Plasma, nearly full length. 0.8 MA, 5.6 T with late ramp to 5.96 T, USN, neon. Prf=4.7 MW, but
J turned off early. No early hards! This shot had a locked mode until the RF turns on.

Next shot: tweak early nl_04 programming to try avoiding the early locked mode; add 3 more
           ms to pre-fill

Nov 23 2009 03:42:35:800PM1091123028Robert Granetz
Shot 28 -- Plasma, disrupted during rampdown. 0.8 MA, 5.6 T with late ramp to 5.96 T, USN, neon.
           Prf=5.0 MW.  No early hard x-rays.  Sawteeth don't start until t=0.45 s.

Next shot: a bit more tweaking of early nl_04

Nov 23 2009 03:52:48:317PM1091123029Robert Granetz
Shot 29 -- Fizzle. Looks like too much pre-fill.

Next shot: reduce pre-fill by 3 ms

Nov 23 2009 04:08:26:537PM1091123030Robert Granetz
Shot 30 -- Plasma, disrupted at t=0.91 s. I think it was a low-Z injection. Prf=5.0 MW at
           the time of the disruption.

Next shot: repeat, no changes

Nov 23 2009 04:23:01:067PM1091123031Robert Granetz
Shot 31 -- Plasma, full length. 0.8 MA, 5.6 T with late ramp to 5.96 T, USN, neon. Prf=5 MW, but
with lots of faulting on J. No hard x-rays.

Next shot: no DPCS changes

Shot 32 -- Plasma, disrupts late in rampdown. 0.8 MA, 5.6 T with late ramp to 5.96 T, USN, neon.
There was a big marfe for most of the flattop.

Next shot: reload shot 9 into all segments, shorten the He3 pulse to 60 ms and the
           Ne/Ar pulse to 100 ms

Nov 23 2009 04:48:58:197PM1091123033Robert Granetz
Shot 33 -- Plasma, full length. Looks like a good repeat of shot 9, including high Te and high neutron rate,
and no marfe during most of the flattop. 0.8 MA, 5.6 T with late ramp to 5.84 T, USN, neon.
Prf=5.0 MW. Huge early hard x-ray signal.

Next shot: no DPCS changes; Steve will change the RF phasing

Nov 23 2009 05:01:20:637PM1091123034Robert Granetz
Shot 34 -- Plasma, full length. 0.8 MA, 5.6 T with late ramp to 5.84 T, USN, neon. Prf=5.0 MW, but
J was faulting for the first part of its pulse. Really huge hard x-ray signal.
