========= First half run: MP583: mode conversion flow drive (Day 3).=====================

ICRF: J at 50MHz and D/E at 80 MHz.
B side-top: 15 psi He3.
B side-lower: 1 psi Ar.
Cryopump: required.

Main diagnostics: He3 monitor, HIREX, FRC-ECE, and PCI.

Part A (~8 shots): Plain vanilla 1 MA EDA H-mode, reload 1091118029, 1 MA, 5.1 T, raise target nl04 = 1.0e20 m^-2. To condition up the antennas and also check rotation vs. dW/Ip scaling in normal LSN EDA H-mode.

ICRF waveform: D+E @ 80 MHz, 2.0 MW from 0.6 to 1.5 sec. to get H-mode
J @ 50 MHz, 2.4 MW from 0.9 to 1.5 sec, +90 degree phase.

He3 puff: 100 ms from 0.2 sec (puff length may vary shot by shot, or add a 2nd puff later in the shot).
Ar puff: normal puff length for HIREX.

After the antennas are conditioned, run LSN EDA H-mode at 0.8 MA (target nl04=0.8e20 m^-2), and 0.6 MA (target nl04=0.6e20 m^-2).

Part B (2-3 shots): Counter-Ip rotation drive at -90 degree phase.

It has been speculated based on the result on 1091118 that -90 degree phase may drive counter-Ip flow at high power. Reload 1091118004, USN, 0.8 MA, nl = 0.8e20 m^-2, J -90 degree phase from 0.6 to 1.5 sec. 3 steps down, 2.5 MW then 1.8 MW, then 1 MW (300 ms each step). He3 puff 100 ms at 0.2 sec. If I do see counter-Ip rotation, do another shot at +90 degree with the same RF waveform.

Part C (~10 shots): Low density H-mode.

C1 (<= 3 shots): Like 1091022029, program a SSEP jog at 0.8 sec, sweep from -0.5 cm to 0.5 cm. Cryopump on. Move J power later to start at 1.0 sec. Hopefully this exercise can reduce the density level in H-mode. If not, vary upper-trianglarity, and repeat. If it fails in reducing density in three tries, goto C3.

C2 (3 shots): If low density H-mode obtained in C1, run several shots at different Ip = 1.0, 0.8, 0.6 MA using the SSEP jog. Target density will also be changed accordingly.

C3 (2 shots): Run comparison shots with -90 degree antenna phase at 1 MA (with SSEP jog and without SSEP jog).

C4 (1 shot): choose the shot with the largest rotation, modulate J power, and check out momentum transport.

Part D (5 shots): if time permits, or Part C does not work,

reload shot 1091118032, run different current and/or antenna phase. RF modulation for momentum transport study.

End of first half run (switch to MP536).

SL_summary: MP583 (day 2.5).

The main goal of this part of experiment: flow drive in low density H-mode was not acomplished due to the difficulties in obtaining low density H-mode at high current. Because of the strong linkage between the plasma current and density in H-mode, we were not be able to do an (Ip/ne) scan in H-mode. Rotation increases during 50 MHz mode conversion heating, but further analysis is needed to separate the MC driven rotation from the intrinsic rotation (with large rise of plasma store energy).

Shot 10 was to verify whether we could drive counter-Ip rotation at high RF power and -90 degree phase. The rotation was clearly co-current.

Shot 18 and 19 were for RF modulation and momentum transport analysis. Strong rotation was observed in these L-mode USN shots.

Part II

A successful follow up to previous FW heating experiments on 1091119 and we were able to obtain several power modulations both faster and slower than sawtooth period. These are good candidates for obtaining the electron power deposition profile. The PCI only detected fast waves so there is no residual He3 to complicate the interpretation. On 023, the FW absorption is quite good and the break-in-slope for the central ECE channels is quite obvious at the RF transition. In the last hour, we returned to the sawtooth pacing MP and developed a good discharge at 1 MA and the last shot, 036, is an interesting candidate for analysis.

J: into H-mode. (close to Rice scaling?)
result: DV 42 km/s

result: DV 16 km/s
L-mode MCFD scaling: 20*prf*ip/nl04 = 22 km/s
Rice scaling: dw/Ip ~ 23 km/s

No clear conclusion can be drawn.

Next: Go to Part B (check out counter Ip drive). 1091118004. USn, 0.8 MA, nl0. J -90 phase. 2.5MW -> 1.8 MW --> 1 MW. He 100 ms. (with cryopump on to have the same startup).
Nov 24 2009 11:11:10:340AM1091124010Yijun LinAttempt for counter-Ip rotation at -90 phase.
No evidence on counter-Ip.

DV 43 km/s
L-mode MCFD scaling: 20*prf*ip/nl04 = 45 km/s
Rice scaling: 20 km/s
It matches the l-mode scaling, as already shown early (not much difference in antenna phase)

So the rotation reverse in shots 1091118004 et al, was most like due to plasma evolution (or He3 depletion).

Next: go to part C. With SSEP jog for density control. Comparing shot 8 today.
Nov 24 2009 11:28:32:370AM1091124011Yijun Lin0.8 MA, nl04=0., 5.1 T, LSN, 100 ms He3
D+E: 2 MW, 0.6 to 1.5 sec
J: 2 MW, 0.8 to 1.5 sec, +90 degree phase.

rotation close to Rice scaling (70 km/s)
H-mode could not stay.

(not much sign that the H-mode density is lower than shot 8).

Next: raise RF power, and see if the plasma can stay in H-mode. and long EDAs.
Nov 24 2009 11:45:22:200AM1091124012Yijun Lin0.8 MA, nl04=0.95, 5.1 T, LSN, 150 ms He3
D+E: 2.8 MW, 0.6 to 1.5 sec
J: 2.4 MW, 0.8 to 1.5 sec, +90 degree phase.

Rice scaling 50 km/s
DV 75 km/s. (but very complicated)l
L-mode MCFD scaling: 27 km/s.

Next: Raise target density to 1.1 and raise D/E to 2.7 MW and see if H-mode can stay.
Nov 24 2009 11:52:17:747AM1091124013Yijun Lin0.8 MA, nl04=0., 5.1 T, LSN, 150 ms He3
D+E: 2.8 MW, 0.6 to 1.5 sec
J: 2.4 MW, 0.8 to 1.5 sec, +90 degree phase.

Similar to shot 12.

Rice scaling 50 km/s
DV 75 km/s. (but it is not clear cut).
L-mode MCFD scaling: 27 km/s.

Next: re-run shot 8.
Nov 24 2009 12:26:53:217PM1091124014Yijun Lin0.8 MA, nl04=0., 5.1 T, LSN, 150 ms He3
D+E: 2.5 MW, 0.6 to 1.5 sec
J: 2.5 MW, 0.8 to 1.5 sec, +90 degree phase.

Similar to shot 13. (was going to lower power, but did not take. Error?)

Rice scaling 50 km/s
DV 54 km/s.
L-mode MCFD scaling: 24 km/s.

Next: repeat. with -90 degree phase.
Nov 24 2009 12:32:41:170PM1091124015Yijun Lin0.8 MA, nl04=0.9, 5.1 T, LSN, 150 ms He3
D+E: 2. MW, 0.6 to 1.5 sec
J: 2.2 MW, 0.8 to 1.5 sec, -90 degree phase.

Rice scaling 45 km/s
DV 24 km/s.
L-mode MCFD scaling: 24 km/s.

compare to shot 8, rotation is smaller. So there is effect with antenna phase.

Next: re-run shot 9. 0.6 MA shot
Nov 24 2009 12:38:15:170PM1091124016Yijun Lin0.6 MA, nl04=0.7, 5.1 T, LSN, 150 ms He3
D+E: 2. MW, 0.6 to 1.5 sec
J: 2.2 MW, 0.8 to 1.5 sec, +90 degree phase.

Rice scaling 30 km/s (counted from J starting)
DV 30 km/s.
L-mode MCFD scaling: 30 km/s.

Next: repeat with -90 degree phase.
Nov 24 2009 12:51:17:747PM1091124017Yijun Lin0.6 MA, nl04=0.7, 5.1 T, LSN, 150 ms He3
D+E: 2. MW, 0.6 to 1.5 sec
J: 2.2 MW, 0.8 to 1.5 sec, -90 degree phase.

Not clear what to draw from 17 and 16. Rotation is slightly smaller than 16 (+90).

Rice scaling 20 km/s
DV 25 km/s.
L-mode MCFD scaling: 30 km/s.

Next: go to Part D, reload shot 1091118032, Ip to 0.8 MA. Modulate RF power.
Nov 24 2009 01:06:29:357PM1091124018Yijun Lin0.8 MA, nl04=0.6, 5.1 T, USN, 100 ms He3
J 2.6 MW. Modulate (150 ms on, 150 ms off).

Rice scaling 25 km/s
DV 75 km/s. (about the same as the scaling from last week).
L-mode MCFD scaling: 70 km/s.

Next: repeat with -90 degree phase.

Nov 24 2009 01:18:17:153PM1091124019Yijun Lin0.8 MA, nl04=0.6, 5.1 T, USN, 100 ms He3
J 2.6 MW. Modulate (150 ms on, 150 ms off).

Rice scaling 30 km/s
DV ~ 55 km/s.
L-mode MCFD scaling: 60 km/s.

So it is still true -90 drives slower rotation, and the rotation rises more slowly also. Hopefully, the last two shots are good enough for momentum transport modeling.
