| Impurity Transport Studies in L-Mode Plasmas
Full day of 1.5 Days (Other run was 1091202xxx 2nd half) --------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a continuation of the run started on 12/02 in the afternoon. The purpose of these experiments is to use the newly commissioned laser blow-off system to investigate the dependence of the impurity fluxes as a function of local plasma parameters through scans in safety factor, input power, and density. This will allow for a more general characterization of the particle flux that can directly be compared with turbulent transport theories as well as provide insight into the relevant factors into the impurity flux for later experiments. The list of target plasmas for each shot is presented below. This experiment consists of parameter scans in ne (nl04 of .6, .9, 1.2, 1.5x10^20), Ip (.6, .8, 1.0, 1.2 MA), and Pin (ohmic, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 MW) for effective scans in density, q95, and Te. --------------------------------------------------------------------- USN Reference shot: 1091202034 (for equilibrium only, see below for RF, Bt, etc.) Cryopump: On Working Gas Species: D2 Argon puffing for Er profiles from HiREX Sr. Laser Blow-Off: Yes Density: nl04 of .6, .9, 1.2, 1.5x10^20 Boronization Requested: No Standard ECDC Overnight Toroidal Field: 5.4 T Plasma Current: .6, .8, 1.0, 1.2 MA ICRF Power: D & E antennae: 80 MHZ, maximum power J-antennae: 78 MHz, maximum power needed to supplement D and E to get to 4 MW RF power steps for all shots are programmed as the following: Until 0.7 sec: Ohmic, 0.7-0.9 sec: 1 MW, 0.9-1.1 sec: 2 MW, 1.1-1.3 sec: 3 MW, 1.3-1.5 sec: 4 MW (unless otherwise specified) --Diagnostics: --------------------------------------------------------------------- -ECE (all channels) for Te -Thomson, edge and core, for ne and Te -HIREX Sr., Rotation information and Er information - McPherson (VUV), scanning shot to shot. Mostly on the outer half of the plasma to supplement the views provided LLNL spectrometer - Soft X-ray arrays - LLNL spectrometer (if available) - HIREX Jr. (for He-like Ca line) - Reflectometry (if available) during at least one injection period. (To verify injection as non-peturbative in a turbulent fluctuation sense and look for I-mode transitions at higher power.) -PCI set up for low frequency, low k fluctuations digitized during the entire flat-top ----------------------------------------------------------------------- --Shot Plan: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Each plasma shot will operate at a fixed density and current while the ICRF is incremented in 1 MW steps every 200 ms from .7 to 1.3 seconds. Initially 5 impurity injections will be introduced into the plasma approximately 65 ms after each RF step. This corresponds to injections at .565, .765, .965, 1.165, and 1.365 seconds. This number might be reduced to four injections if the inter-injection time is not sufficient to extract impurity transport information. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- | This section was completed on 1091202019-034 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- | 1. | MP586a Full Run Day
This run began well at the nl04 = .9e20 and .6 MA case in shot 2 and moved up in current from there. Despite some digitizer/analog output issues that caused the laser to stop working and required about 1.5 hours of troubleshooting, I was able to get 30 plasma shots. I achieved all of conditions at nl04 = .9 and 1.2e20 but was unable to access the 1.5e20 conditions because the neutral pressure limit for the RF was already becoming a problem at the lower density and therefore the temperature scan was not possible. At the high densities the RF was not as reliable and the scans in temperature were not as dramatic. Given that the Ip dependence of impurity confinement time was already easily characterized by the existing data, I chose to move lower densities (.4 and .75e20) and attempt to access some currents to provide a better density scan since the 1.5e20 cases were no easily achieved. Over the course of 1.5 run days a good scan in density, temperature, and current was achieved over a wide operational range. Initial results show that there might be a small density dependence of the impurity confinement which is seen most clearly at high densities but is not as evident at low density. The current dependence (increase in current increases impurity confinement) is once again very evident and at low density the temperature dependence seen on shot 12/02 is most obvious (decrease in impurity confinement with an increase in temperature). More in depth analysis will soon be performed. |

| The machine ran well today, and we covered a good range of currents and densities. All shots were USN and the cryopump was on.
A number of the higher current shots had I-mode periods. Changing the nl_04 feedback (increased derivative gain, decreased proportional gain) on shot 21 appeared with help with density oscillations OH2L started misbehaving on shot 11; after shot 15, the engineers did some power resets on the supply, and it behaved after that. scorecard: Shot,Duration(s),Ipmax(MA),Result Shot,Duration(s),Ipmax,Result | 01 0.512 0.042 Fizzle | 02 2.300 0.706 Plasma | | 03 1.964 0.819 Plasma | 04 2.300 1.019 Plasma | | 05 2.300 1.214 Plasma | 06 2.300 1.211 Plasma | | 07 2.300 1.019 Plasma | 08 2.100 0.723 Plasma | | 09 0.513 0.040 Fizzle | 10 2.290 0.802 Plasma | | 11 0.520 0.058 Fizzle | 12 2.300 0.813 Plasma | | 13 1.748 1.052 Plasma | 14 2.290 1.208 Plasma | | 15 0.465 0.848 Plasma | 16 0.512 0.064 Plasma | | 17 1.689 1.279 Plasma | 18 0.510 0.048 Fizzle | | 19 2.220 0.733 Plasma | 20 0.504 0.044 Fizzle | | 21 1.899 1.203 Plasma | 22 0.898 1.218 Plasma | | 23 1.940 0.689 Plasma | 24 1.745 0.871 Plasma | | 25 0.910 0.691 Plasma | 26 2.270 0.682 Plasma | | 27 2.290 0.822 Plasma | 28 2.090 0.821 Plasma | | 29 1.918 1.015 Plasma | 30 1.900 1.363 Plasma | Date 1091204: 30 shots. 25 plasmas. 5 fizzles. 0 duds. 0 System Error. HiREX data looks good despite some odd RF. The max RF was 2.5 MW but an H-mode occurs at about 1.5 sec so I am moving on despite RF to avoid H-mode. |

Small H-mode at the end. RF is pretty godo all the way through. 3 of the 5 injections are clear on HiReX but then high voltage started to trip. So I lost shot 4 on this shot. Given all of our delays...I am going to move on. |

The temperature is low a little bit because of high radiated power. The injections were good but the last occurs after rampdown. |

Good Injections but crummy L-mode confinement. The temperature doesnt change significantly despite the good RF up to 4MW. HiRex data looks good. The 3 in the middle look pretty good although RF at this density and current is only marginal. The core temperature during this time is fairly constant so there is no real scan with temperature unfortunately. Moving on to fill in old data points. |

E antenna was not reported...at least so far but I believe close to the desired heating was achieved. Density was pretty constant and temperature grew significantly over the course of the shot. We are going to retry because for some reason the last 2 pulses were not really picked up on HIREX. |

Density is basically at the target with some variation due to the RF and the Hirex data is good for all but the last point. We are moving on to the .8 MA case at the same density. |

Density is basically at the target with some variation due to the RF and the Hirex data is good for all but the last point. Since locked modes will probably come into play at higher current, we are moving down to .4 MA Ip. |
