Shot plan laid out in E mail, but Ian will tune in the shots as appropriate. Perhaps starting with higher density and lower it toward 2x10^19. We should avoid runaways to the extent possible. B=5.2T to start with and Ip=600 kA. |

| Everything went very well today.
The summary of good shots and parameters had been placed by Liang Lin in the PCI summary. Please refer to it for further information regrading tody's run. Tomorrow we will run two sets of plasmas, one at 3.9 T at 0.6 MA, and another set at 2.6 T and 0.4MA at various densities that will be specified tomorrow and what is needed to complete the data set. HIREX SR collected data, as well as the GPI was running. The laser blow-off dropped out earlier in the morning due to a closed gate-valve. |

| PO summary 15 Dec 09
-------------------- MP571 Low density ohmic plasmas. We used 3T initiation throughout; for both 5.2 and 2.6 T fields, with appropriate field ramps after breakdown, and early diversion. We had a rather high OH coax resistance after two low current disruptions the first two shots. A rather slow trend over the whole day brought the resistance back to about 2.5 micro ohms. The initiation was very reliable, with one dud that appeared to be caused by a 20A jump in EF4L, and a post disruption fizzle. The entire first day of the shot list was covered, although it proved impossible to avoid locked modes and disruptions for the lowest densities (.2 and .3) at 1MA. Having the cryopump made density control quite easy at the low densities desired. It was, as expected impossible to avoid runaways. Their levels were variable. In addition, the 5.2T part of day 2 was also covered (higher densities) at the request of the SL. Thus all that is left to do for tomorrow is 1-14 of the Dec 16 shot list. Those are the 3.9 and the 2.6T field plasmas. Collect more data for linear ohmic regime transport at low densities. PCI is set to medium to low k regime (k < 15 cm-1).Timing is set to 0.8-1.4 sec. BT = 5.2 T, Ip= 400 kA. Proposed shots will include additional special diagnostics as follows: at 1.30 sec, on selected shots, Nathan Howard will inject CaF2 with the laser blow-off to collect information on particle transport at low densities. Following this, perhaps 50 ms later, there will be GPI injections (Istvan Cziegler, Jim Terry) to collect data on edge turbulence at low densities (like to see if it has different features than the PCI). The proposed shot sequence is as follows: 1. Start with a shot like 1090918012 at Bt = 5.2 T, Ip = 0.4 MA, target density of nl04 = 0.2. Runaways are expected. Check TS to see if spatial coverage is optimized. Repeat until good data is obtained.Increase density if necessary. 2. Increase current , Bt= 5.2 T, Ip = 0.6 MA. Keep density at nl04 = 0.2. 3. Repeat to improve on the runaway situation. 4. Move on to Bt= 2.6 T, Ip = 0.4 MA. Keep density at nl04 = 0.2. Runaways are expected. Two or three shots might be necessary to get to target Bt and Ip. 5. Move to Bt = 5.2 T, Ip = 0.4 MA, nl04 = 0.25. Runaways should be mitigated. 6.Repeat shot as necessary for good data. 7. Move to Bt = 2.6 T, Ip = 0.4 MA, nl04 = 0.25. Repeat shot as necessary for good data. 8. Move to Bt = 5.2 T, Ip = 0.4 MA, nl04 = 0.30. Expect no runaways. Repeat as necessary. 9.
