Then, add ICRF and see if resonance persists. Scan B_T from -5.4 T to -6.3 T from 0.5 s to 1.5 s (single rising ramp). Shots 8-13 Density sweep by 20 % - ramp up and down in single triangle period to change TAE frequency. Density ranges are NL04 = 6.3-7.7E19, 5.8-7.2E19, and 6.8-8.3E19 m^{-2}. Ramp starts at 0.5 s, reaches peak at 1 s, and returns to initial value at 1.5 s. Shots 14-19 B_T sweep by 10 % in a single triangle period, again to change TAE frequency. B_T ranges are 5.5-5.9, 5.7-6.1, and 5.9-6.3 T. Ramp starts at 0.5 s, reaches peak at 1 s, and returns to initial value at 1.5 s. Shots 20-end Reproduce shot 1021003025 - try to reproduce AE resonance seen originally (around 0.8-1.0 s). Then, turn on ICRF power at 2 MW and examine effect on resonance.

Run Summary: Goal: ***** 1. Achieve flat AMHD antenna current response at constant frequency. 2. Sweep Alfven eigenmode resonant frequency across constant driving frequency and reproduce clearly resonances from 1080403010. Result: ******* No grand-slams yet in terms of seeing a big bulge in the probe spectrograms and corresponding circles (or ellipses if non-constant damping rate) in complex plane of transfer function. Synchronous detection sometimes sees resonances, and these don't necessarily appear where the probe signal amplitude increases in the frequency range of interest. We will take a closer look to try to discover more resonances. On the other hand, current on antenna fairly constant from Shot 9 onward. Before Shot 9, there was anomalous modulation in antenna current between 0.5 s and 0.9 s. Starting on Shot 008, antenna was excited at constant frequency from 0.2 s to 1.5 s instead of 0.5 s to 1.5 s - on the next shot, antenna current amplitude modulation largely went away. (And because we have constant excitation frequency on the driving antenna, we can at least rule out that circles in the complex transfer function plane reflect resonances in the amplifier or the magnetics coils.) Lots of trouble getting density to behave. ICRF drove a spike in density that took the pump considerable time to compensate. Starting on Shot 13, (1) ICRF was started at 0.4 s to give control system more time to reverse the corresponding density spike, and (2) we gave up on the density triangle waveform and just attempted to increase density monotonically in a single ramp. This helped. Later, also started density level at 0.35E20 at 0.4 s at time that ICRF came on. This intentionally undershot the target value for density to try to compensate for the bump up in density that ICRF was causing (the goal was to have good control of density at least from 0.5 to 1.5 s). In the later B-field sweeps (shots 18, 19, and 21), the calculated FTAE frequency did not track the clean triangle waveform of B_T, and density was highly variable despite a constant setting at 0.6E20 NL04. In those last three shots, we did not try to compensate q, changing because of ramping B_T, with corresponding ramp in Ip, though we did do this earlier in the run when B was varied over a wider range (e.g. Shots 9 and 11). Some nicer shots that we'll be studying more carefully in the nearer future: 009 011 012 013 021 near future: 014 018 019 1-hour delay in the morning due to faulty fiber; end of day at 3:00 PM for PSFC Holiday Party. Some disruptions, one fizzle, and one no-power shot due to alternator issue. We started out by loading 1080403010 (L-mode, upper single null) as requested by the SL. All magnetics predictors had to be recalculated. I loaded seg 1 of 1091208020 into seg 1 for startup, since it was very effective during the 1091208 run. The first shot was a fizzle however, having too much gas. Shot 02 ran into rampdown with 5 ms less prefill gas. We had several disruptions today apparently caused by injections. We tried moving the upper strikepoint inside by 1 cm (RXU) to help with this problem, but as on the 1091208 run, there was no clear improvement. We had great difficulty controlling the density today. With Steve Wolfe's help, we tried changes to the integral, proportional, and derivative gain without much success. The SL eventually decided to concentrate on toroidal field scans instead. A great deal of the problem was the density rise associated with the rf turn on. We had one no power shot because of a spurious alternator inhibit signal. The cause turned out to be bad instrumentation issues with an RTD. We also had a problem with the OH1 power supply control electronics which required about 1 hour of Bill and Gary's time to fix. TF cooling delayed some shots today. I ran long TF pulses and had the double swing fizzle routine running full out. Could probably have cut back on these somewhat. Startup was very good today, and the cryopump worked properly on every shot. Score: fizzles 01 no power 10 plasmas 02,03,04,05,06,07,08,09,11,12, 13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21

Interestingly, lots of movement in BP_BC_TOP trace amplitude even when antenna driving current is flat. Less modulation on amplitude of other probes, EXCEPT around t=0.6 - 0.7 s, when there seems to be a rise and fall in amplitude on the BP_**_TOP probes. And the DPCS FTAE calculation (fixed by Steve this morning - thanks!) shows FTAE approaching 850 kHz and then leaving this range during this time period. Might be interesting to look for resonances here. The fact that density was lower than we had targeted may have helped us out - will try to move the density sweep to this range in the future. RF kicked up density when it turned on, and control system only caught up with the target waveform halfway through the shot. Interesting behavior in BP_BC_TOP - shows peaking in amplitude around 1.00 s, 1.07 s, and 1.134 s, among other times. At least the first two of these peaks seem to have a corresponding peak in the HISTORY plot from w_fluct on some other probes. But there is no clear resonance indicated by synchronous detection. FTAE_CALC crosses the same value of around 790 kHz during this time, but does not sweep cleanly through this value; as such it is possible that synchronous detection doesn't see a resonance because the pole is not swept sufficiently through the driving frequency. Check amplitude spread from synchronous detection at these times versus background noise to see if there is a difference. And check CNPA. Next Shot: ********** Density sweep from 4.2-6.0E19 - try to drive FTAE_CALC to 850 kHz. Try to push up FTAE_CALC even further, closer to drive frequency.

BP_BC_BOT (a probe with a high-resonance-frequency) and several other probes seem to show clear features in 800-900 kHz band, but synchronous detection does not seem to indicate that these are resonances. 19 May 2010 Interesting: several unstable modes develop during rampdown - around 1.74-1.94 s between 40 and 80 kHz. Three narrow bands, the highest being the strongest and steadiest. Density is rampding down from nel=0.3-0.05E20 during this time, and core temperature ceases showing sawteething at onset of modes, but stabilizes while modes are present and strongest, before starting to fall again after modes disappear. The edge temperature follows the opposite program, falling during the start of the modes, before stabilizing toward the second half of the mode persistence. The plasma goes out around 1.95 s, shortly after the modes are no longer visible. See BP1T_GHK, BP2T_GHK. Unfortunately, other fluctuations instruments do not sample this late into the shot. Next Shot: ********** B_T sweep from 5.7-6.1.

But there are other regions where, based on position of DPCS:FTAE_CALC and probe traces in comparison with resonance seen from synchronous detection, should also see resonance, but we haven't seen this yet. Can try looking more closely on reflected side of B_T triangle. Interesting that DPCS:FTAE_CALC is not a triangle as B_T is. Density is also not flat - it runs from 0.48-0.6. Loaded with no errors Open tree done New predictor algorithms have now been prepared and successfully tested off-line, and will be used during plasma operation today. When loading shots or importing segments from shots earlier than 1090925001 you will get the Configuration ID Warning message, telling you to "recalculate all magnetic predictors". As usual, this means you will need to 1) go into the Edit Wire screens for each of the magnetics predictors (BR_0,BZ_0,RCUR,ZCUR,RXL,ZXL,RXU,ZXU,SSEP,STRKPSI) that appear in any loaded or imported segment, noting any values in the OFFSET column 2) hit the CALL button for all rows that have an algorithm name other than CLEAR or CUSTOM 3) Replace any non-zero entries in the OFFSET column which get reset to zero by the CALL. 4) APPLY (or OK) the screen, 5) OK the Factor screen when it pops up, and also any P_INFO warnings that appear. You do not need to, and generally should not, re-Call predictors for the coil currents, NL04, B21_PROJ, EF2_BY_EF4, or IP as part of this fix.
