| In this run we executed part 2 of MP 587a, in which
we magnetically mapped the GPI outboard-midplane view at the AB split-limiter to the flush-mount probes of the outer divertor at F-port. We are investigating whether the GPI emission signal fluctuations are correlated with either the I_sat or V_floating signal fluctuations at the mapped probe. In other words do the filaments/blobs extend from the midplane, past the X-point, to the targets? The brief summary of the results is: 1) We were able to magnetically map (according to EFIT) divertor probes 9 and 10 to the GPI view with the shortest possible connection length (~2.5 m). 2) This mapping occurs at low q_95 of ~2.7. This q_95 was readily obtained at fields of both 5.44 T and 3.5 T. 3) The "on-the-fly" analysis indicates that the cross-correlation with I_sat was inconsistent. On some shots, when the mapping showed magnetic connection, we did see cross-correlations (for 3 ms duration data sets) of as much as 45% at lag times on the probe signals of 50 to 100 usec, a reasonably good signature. However, a clear correlation was not observed on many shots with nominally the same mapping. 4) In order to establish whether or not the correlation tracked the mapping, we established Ip ramps to sweep the field-line connected to either probe 9 or probe 10 across the GPI field-of-view. We put in both Ip ramp-ups (that move the field-line down across the f-o-v) and Ip ramp-downs (that move the field-line up across the f-o-v). 5) Without further analysis, I cannot say that we have a clear cross-correlation that follows the magnetic mapping. 6) One 2 shots (030, 031) we biased the mapped probe with a 10 kHz triangle waveform (which swung the probe from I_sat to collecting as much electron flux as possible, in order to see if we could affect the GPI emission. We saw no modulation on the GPI views. 7) An addition detail, relevant to machine operation: we need the strike point in the slot for the desired mapping. When this was the case for the high current(1.2 MA)/low q discharges the power to the slot was enough to raise impurity levels (presumably from W) and cause impurity-induced disruptions. This is presumably a result of the broken W tiles that were observed (during the up-to-air inspection) lying in the slot. When we went to the lower current(0.8 MA)/high q discharges this was not a problem. |

| After an up-to-argon last week followed by several days of bake, the
machine started up on the first shot today, and ran well throughout the day. I simply loaded in the shot Jim specified (1091211031) without any changes to segment 1, and off we went. To obtain proper mapping for the probes at our normal fields required running the strike point onto the floor resulting in large amounts of radiated power, probably from our fractured tungsten tiles. Jim eventually asked me to lower the field and current, which kept the proper mapping, and we then began to obtain full length discharges. We also had some difficulty with vertical stability that may have been helped by reducing the elongation. Following shot 30 today all the scopes on the control room workstations disappeared. After restarting them, all was fine for shot 31. We had 29 plasma today, mostly full length and useful for Jim's MP. We had fizzles on shots 10 and 17, probably as a result of disruption recovery issues. On shot 12 we had a no power shot because of a spurious I2t fault. |

APDs show 0.2 correlation on diode (3,9) at 0.76 s. APDs show 0.25 correlation on diode (~2,4) at 0.94 s. These are qualitatively consistent with the mapping.
