MP 593: Vertical equilibrium shifts for triggering ELMs SL: Jerry Hughes PO: Jim Irby Prep: -- Overnight boronization followed by He ECDC -- Working Gas Species: Deuterium -- ICRF at 80 MHz up to 4 MW available. -- Special gas puffing: 1psi Ar puff enabled, puff at 0.3s, 50ms in length 10psi D2 NINJA puff enabled for GPI, CXRS --- please consult SL before triggering NINJA puff. -- A-Coils: Standard configuration -- LBO set up for Rowan et al. to piggyback --- please request SL permission before actually firing. Required Diagnostics and their set up: 1.) Edge TS, no position changes. 2.) ECE. Optimize for pedestal top 3.) 0-D Fast D-alpha for ELM timing 4.) Fast magnetics. Digitize for full length of shot. Desired diagnostics: 1.) Passive and GP-assisted CXRS. 2.) PCI. Unmasked configuration, digitizing for full length of discharge. 3.) Reflectometer. Set 0.5s digitization window to begin at 0.6s. 4.) Fast D-alpha GPI. 5.) Bolometry. 6.) Lyman alpha. 7.) HIREX Sr. Run plan: 1. Start from shot 1091022012, an 800kA, 5.4T discharge which had fixed X-points and ZCUR control. Set nl04 to 1e20. Program a steady ZCUR such that the resulting plasma is LSN with an SSEP value of approximately -7mm. This probably means lowering the ZCUR program by about 3mm. Apply flat ICRF pulses from 0.6s to 1.5s, bringing power up to 4MW (or max available). GOAL OF PART 1: Recover from boronization and establish a high power EDA H-mode APPROX. # OF SHOTS: 3--5 2. Begin applying modulation to ZCUR during the H-mode. The modulation window should range from 0.9s to 1.4s. Initial modulation parameters: Modulation max: 0.007m, Modulation min: 0.0m Modulation rampup: 0.010s, Modulation rampdown: 0.010s Modulation period: 0.040s (f=25.0Hz) If this is unsuccessful, the modulation demands may need to be reduced somewhat. If successful, then attempt to reduce the modulation rampup and rampdown times to 0.005s, then 0.002s. After a minimum ramp time is established, increase drive frequency by decreasing mod period to 0.020s, 0.013s and 0.010s (50, 77 and 100Hz), insofar as is consistent with the minimum constraints on rampup/rampdown time. GOAL OF PART 2: Test the feasibility of modulating in a stationary H-mode. Once the modulation is working, look for changes in the H-mode character. APPROX. # OF SHOTS: 8--12 3. Raise Ip to 1.1MA while keeping nl04 at 1e20. Run a shot with flat ZCUR first, as in part 1. Then add modulation at the highest successful drive frequency in step 2. If the plasma control is unstable, back off of the modulation demands. If the H-modes are too radiative and transient, raise target density slightly. If they are too EDA-like, lower the target density. GOAL OF PART 3: Extend technique to an ELM-free H-mode. APPROX. # OF SHOTS: 4--8 4. If ELMs have been triggered at any point, repeat the successful discharge and see whether some degree of ELM pacing is possible by varying the drive frequency shot-to-shot over the range of 20--100Hz. If ELMs have not been triggered, then repeat the modulation in lower current H-modes, under the assumption that higher beta_poloidal will promote ELM instability. Try 0.6MA, then 0.4MA. GOAL OF PART 4: Self-evident APPROX. # OF SHOTS: 4--6, or whatever is left |

| Run summary for 1100202
MP 593: Vertical equilibrium shifts for triggering ELMs SL: Jerry Hughes PO: Jim Irby There were long delays early in the run day to 1) address faulty gas feedback control and 2) replace the EF3 breaker. Because of this, the time devoted to boronization recovery extended into the afternoon portion of the run. By 14:45 we had only 10 full-length plasmas and were just starting to get signs of steady EDA H-mode. With a little over 2 hours to go, we began applying ZCUR modulation on shot 14. This was highly successful in 800kA EDA H-modes, and we were able to maintain steady H-modes with controlled Prad and good confinement on shots 15 and 17. On these two shots, it looked like a rising radiated power was arrested and kept under control by the mosulation. Outer gaps did not oscillate significantly, and ICRF handled the modulation well. The QCM was dianosed with PCI and magnetics, as well as fast D-alpha. During the modulation phase, there was a hint that the lab frame frequency of the QCM was being shifted as we modulated, but this bears further looking at. In the last hour or so, we moved on to 1.1MA H-modes to test this technique in an ELM-free case. This was less successful. The plasma went vertically unstable in every case, even when we reduced the programmed slew rate substantially. Because of the delays today, we made only marginal progress on the MP. The technique could use some more exploration. We might want to try it at 1MA and low target density. Also, in the future the cryopump could be useful in helping to outgas the walls after boronization, and keeping the density down. Summary of modulation sequence. | Machine ran extremely well today. We had only one fizzle (shot 21)
probably because I didn't keep the fill pressure low following the disruption on shot 20. The first half of the run was spent on boronization recovery and conditioning the antennas. A new modulation technique was applied to ZCUR today that worked extremely well. Only when we tried to push the plasma current to 1100 kA did we run into trouble and have a few disruptions. ZCUR modulation amplitudes of 0.007 m, at 25 Hz, with 0.001 s rise and fall were successfully applied. Problems: We noticed by shot 2 that the main gas puff was not happening and we were running off the walls. Willy found that the chopper supply for the piezo drive was not working. We pulled out the board and ran successfully on the analog drive for the rest of the run During the test of the gas system (04) we found that the EF3 breaker was no longer working properly. It was replaced before shot 05. We had a data system slow down that Josh and Tom had to spend some time fixing. We lost D-Port antenna when a leak developed in an FPA cooling line elbow. The water took out some electronics. Not clear if we will have D-Port back by tomorrow. |

Let's get started. 800kA target. Try a little RF. Full length discharge. Lots of RF faults. No H-modes yet. Equilibrium looks reasonably good. TS working with one laser Fluctuation diagnostics seem to be mostly working. |
| Feb 2 2010 09:32:48:000AM | 1100202002 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 2.
800kA. Got an H-mode with 2MW ICRF. Injection at 0.7s. Not sure the main gas valve is working. Density is well below the target in the L-mode phase. |
| Feb 2 2010 10:33:42:790AM | 1100202003 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 3
Gas test shot. Results were less than favorable. |

Another gas test |
| Feb 2 2010 01:23:49:577PM | 1100202005 | Jerry Hughes |
No plasma |
| Feb 2 2010 01:24:21:470PM | 1100202006 | Jerry Hughes |
Plasma, no significant H-modes yet. |
| Feb 2 2010 01:25:05:640PM | 1100202007 | Jerry Hughes |
EDA H-mode. RF still ratty. |
| Feb 2 2010 01:31:05:910PM | 1100202008 | Jerry Hughes |
EDA H-mode, fairly low power by the end. E and J fault out. D is better High neutral pressure. Not quite recovered from boronization yet. |
| Feb 2 2010 01:44:50:367PM | 1100202009 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 9:
Neutral pressure still rather high. For the next shot, lower nl04 program to 8e19. |
| Feb 2 2010 02:14:14:143PM | 1100202010 | Jerry Hughes |
Shot 10 Multiple H-modes. Radiation, injections are a problem. QCM is in evidence on PCI. Perhaps it is too weak, or the impurity sources are too great. Lower RF demand for next shot. |
| Feb 2 2010 02:15:49:143PM | 1100202011 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 11
3MW RF to begin with, and we see better performance. We are getting close to a steady H-mode target for this experiment. |
| Feb 2 2010 02:21:54:227PM | 1100202012 | Jerry Hughes |
Shot 12 Injection at 0.7s, but H-mode recovers by 0.9s. D and E not happy after that, perhaps because of high pressure. |
| Feb 2 2010 02:45:02:297PM | 1100202013 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 13
Pretty tough injection at 0.68s. Getting an EDA H-mode from 0.86s on, with some faults on RF. We have a little over 2 hours left, so we'd better start trying to modulate ZCUR, even though we don't have a very steady target. |
| Feb 2 2010 03:09:13:760PM | 1100202014 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 14
Try a ZCUR modulation from 0.9 to 1.4s at 25Hz. Plasma went through. Programmed oscillation worked. You can actually see the oscillation on the slow H-alpha signal and the pressure in the cryo plenum. ZMAGX varies by ~1cm starting at 0.9s. Numerous other things vary too, including X-points and left gap. Density seems to exhibit a favorable reduction after 1s. No ELMs. Wolfe is disappointed. |
| Feb 2 2010 03:36:32:423PM | 1100202015 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 15
ZCUR at 25Hz from 0.9 to 1.4s PO increases rampup/rampdown rates on modulation. (10ms-->5ms) Works. The plasma response is noticeably faster. I also asked Yijun to ease in the RF with a ramp from 1MW to 3.5MW Best shot so far. RF does well until 1.12s. Radiation is well controlled. Beefy pedestal. |
| Feb 2 2010 03:35:31:770PM | 1100202016 | Jerry Hughes |
Shot 16 ZCUR at 25Hz from 0.9 to 1.4s PO increases rampup/rampdown rates on modulation. (5ms-->2ms) Works! The plasma response is a little faster. ZCUR slews in ~3ms. Next. Let's see if 1ms ramp time works. |
| Feb 2 2010 03:46:44:243PM | 1100202017 | Jerry Hughes |
Shot 17 ZCUR at 25Hz from 0.9 to 1.4s PO increases rampup/rampdown rates on modulation. (2ms-->1ms) It survived! The plasma response on the ramp down seems to be faster than the ramp-up. Tped, H98, and neutron rate are very respectable. Good shot. Next: let's remove the modulation and get the baseline shot that we couldn't get earlier due to early injections. |
| Feb 2 2010 04:15:50:910PM | 1100202018 | Jerry Hughes |
Shot 18 No vertical jog programmed on this shot. Lost D-port on this shot, and for the rest of the day. "There is water where water is not supposed to be." --YL So, we don't get our baseline, unfortunately. We will continue with reduced power. I will move on to low q points. Next shot: Raise Ip to 1.1MA. Put modulation back in. |
| Feb 2 2010 04:30:27:773PM | 1100202019 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 19
Attempting 1.1MA with modulation: ZCUR at 25Hz from 0.9 to 1.4s, rampup/rampdown=1ms H-mode, looks pretty QCM-free. Disrupts at 1.02s. Seems to be vertically unstable by the third period of the modulation. J-port wasn't very happy with this H-mode apparently. |
| Feb 2 2010 04:38:59:450PM | 1100202020 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 20
ZCUR at 25Hz from 0.9 to 1.4s PO decreases rampup/rampdown rates on modulation. (1ms-->2ms) vertical instability again. |
| Feb 2 2010 04:59:29:080PM | 1100202021 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 21
Fizzle |
| Feb 2 2010 05:06:45:990PM | 1100202022 | Jerry Hughes |
Shot 22 ZCUR at 25Hz from 0.9 to 1.4s PO decreased rampup/rampdown rates on modulation. (2ms-->5ms) vertical instability at 0.945s, right after an L-H transition. One more attempt with less amplitude in the modulation. |
| Feb 2 2010 05:16:09:370PM | 1100202023 | Jerry Hughes | Well, we tried.
Unstable again, at same time. In ELM-free H-mode. End of run. |
