1st half: Characterization of I-mode edge turbulence ------------------------------------------ The purpose of this experiment is to characterize the edge fluctuations previously observed through both Mirnov coil and reflectometry measurements in the I-mode phase of RF heated plasmas. Previously, we have characterized L-mode, ELMfree and EDA H-mode edge turbulence and mode-like fluc- tuations and showed clear differences between these regimes, therefore this experiment is aimed at identifying an I-mode fingerprint in the edge turbulence spectra. The experiment will focus on determining the --radial profile --average frequency --poloidal propagation direction --parameter (especially nebar) dependence of the broad, peaked feature (the "QQC") of I-mode edge plasma spectra, as well as quantifying its intensity relative to low wave-number turbulence and the spectral distribution of the latter. For this, the 2D APD array has to view inside the separatrix, so a small outer gap is necessary. Reference shot: 1091203020 a high performance I-mode shot with increased B_T and I_p B_T: 5.8T I_p: 1.3MA NL04: 1.e20 which seem to serve well in avoiding H-mode due to sawtooth control. Cryopump ON. | The run was dedicated to MP596.
In the first part of the run, we wanted to produce relatively long lived ELM-free discharges in order to study the EDD edge feature found in 1091014 transitions, its velocity and radial profile. The noise on the GPI APD's was not low enough on any of the shots for the feature to show up. More data analysis and comparison to no plasma shots may still reveal an EDD lobe, since many ELMfree plasmas were produced. In the second part of the run, we produced I-mode discharges so the "QQC mode" -- previously reported to have been observed by magnetics, PCI and reflectometry -- could be studied with the fast 2D GPI. The "QQC mode" was reproduced in several shots. Preliminary results from the GPI measurements show that for this "mode" k_pol < 2.0/cm 150kHz < f < 250kHz with propagation in the EDD direction; We now have some GPI data on the L-I slow transition and the radial location and profile of the QQC fluctuation. We also had a few interesting observations: -there are now ELMs on top of the high performance I-modes, which contrary to what we believed earlier, are not all triggered by sawteeth -some I-H transitions are perfectly aligned in time with ELM-crashes -some I-H transitions seem to be brought on by an inner wall gas puff, which is known to be more efficient at fueling than a LFS puff -the I-mode edge in these plasmas always showed branching on the IDD side, previously observed only on VERY low density (nl04~0.28e20) L-modes and some other I-modes Shot 110204014 is a new C-Mod record of stored energy at 251kJ (the previous record was 5 years ago: 250kJ, 1050426022) Shot reference: --------------- ELMfree (LSN, 5.4T) shot -001 disrupted at 0.51s (loaded 1100202018 after this) -002 NL04~0.4e20, 3.5MW RF, L-mode, EDD prop in far SOL, gap~1.5cm -003 NL04~0.7e20, 3.5MW RF, 7 ELMfree(?) H-modes, QCM in all, gap~0.8cm -004 NL04~0.7e20, Ip=1.0MA, 3.5MW RF, 6 ELMfree H-modes, no QCM, no edge EDD -005 NL04~0.7e20, Ip=1.0MA, 3.5MW RF, 6 ELMfree H-modes, no edge EDD -006 same without RF, L-mode, spectra still noisy, gap~0.9cm (steady) -007 same -008 same with 2MW RF, same as -005 I-mode (USN, 5.8T, cryopump ON) loaded 1091203020 -009 disrupted at 0.36s -010 no NINJA puff, identical to ref shot, QQC on reflectometry -011 no NINJA, 3MW RF for most part, QQC on reflectometry -012 no power shot -013 no plasma -014 good plasma, ELMing I-mode, some triggered by sawtooth crash -015 NL04~1.0e20, good I-mode, clear QQC on APD, more ELMs, gap~0.7cm -016 same, clear branching on IDD side in edge, transition aligned with ELM -017 same perhaps H-mode is caused by inner wall puff, 4 features in I-mode -018 H-mode transition follows the inner wall puff, 4 features -019 inner wall puff OFF (see above), transition aligned with ELM -020 inner wall puff back ON, owise the same, transition off an ELM -021 3MW RF, NO I-mode -022 NL04~0.9e20, very clear 4 features, different profiles -023 NL04~0.8e20, low freq feature in place of QQC, same kind of profile -024 no I-mode, disrupted at 1.15s no more useful shots this day |

| Run went reasonably well until a disruption occurred during shot 24. Shot 25 fizzled, and shot 26 again disrupted this time at 0.5 s.
PO tried to retune startup, but this resulted in a dud (shot 27). Shot 28 and 29 were also duds, apparently because the reprogrammed shot (1100204015) was not actually loaded. Finally, shot 1100402015 was reloaded; the plasma started up but disrupted again. A few problems developed during the run: one with the data system, one with the EF3 breaker and one with the EF4 PLC. None of these were serious, but each resulted in short delays. Scorecard: 28 plasma attempts, 5 disruptions, 3 duds, 1 fizzle and 19 full length discharges. There were also 2 no power "shots" related to the machine problems mentioned above. |

| Feb 4 2010 09:32:12:110AM | 1100204001 | Istvan Cziegler | We start at point 3 so that we don't waste shots on RF conditioning.
Then move on to I-mode stuff. Shot disrupted at t=0.51s. Density might have been too small for the current - we had a locked mode. q95 went under 3 Current too high. Bad choice of reference. We will go with 1100202018 where we had a long H-mode, but possibly lower the density so we don't go EDA. (we have probably no boronization left anyway, so even NL04~0.8e20 might give us an ELMfree) |
| Feb 4 2010 09:53:54:433AM | 1100204002 | Istvan Cziegler | NINJA puff at t=0.71s
APD trigger @ t=0.70s RF with 3.5MW from 0.6s NO H-mode. Strange k-f spectra with clear and strong EDD propagation in the far SOL. What's going on with these? We will lower the OUTER GAP to 7mm by moving the center out while keeping the inner gap (so elongation decreases) NL04 target should be 0.8e20 (Bob brought it earlier to reach it before RF hits) |
| Feb 4 2010 10:13:01:283AM | 1100204003 | Istvan Cziegler | NINJA puff at t=0.71s
APD trigger @ t=0.70s RF with 3.5MW from 0.6s Outer Gap is ~0.8cm with large excursions. Seemingly there are 7 ELMfree H-modes. Radiated power and density ramps steadily in all of them. However, there is quite a clear QCM in all. Raise current to 1.0MA to lower q95 in order to inhibit the QCM onset. |
| Feb 4 2010 10:23:37:770AM | 1100204004 | Istvan Cziegler | NINJA puff at t=0.72s
APD trigger @ t=0.70s RF with 3.5MW from 0.6s Outer Gap is ~0.8cm with large excursions. 6 ELMfree H-modes. No QCM is found but the strong EDD SOL feature persists. The signal is too low for the EDD edge feature to show up. Increased the APD gain. Repeat shot. |
| Feb 4 2010 10:42:04:640AM | 1100204005 | Istvan Cziegler | NINJA puff at t=0.72s
APD trigger @ t=0.70s RF with 3.5MW from 0.6s Outer Gap is ~0.8cm with large excursions. 6 ELMfree H-modes. No EDD feature observed in the edge. The SOL looks as if we had an upward flow with IDD propagating blobs! Weak, noisy spectra. We will try to go without RF in order to see if we can reproduce the usual L-mode spectra. |
| Feb 4 2010 11:04:17:350AM | 1100204006 | Istvan Cziegler | NINJA puff at t=0.72s
APD trigger @ t=0.70s NO RF Outer Gap is ~0.9cm (steady) Good GPI contrast. No EDD in the SOL though. Signals are still very noisy. We will up the NINJA pressure AND the APD gain. If spectra don't clean up we will move on to I-modes. |
| Feb 4 2010 11:15:14:510AM | 1100204007 | Istvan Cziegler | NINJA puff at t=0.72s
APD trigger @ t=0.70s NO RF Outer Gap is ~0.95cm (steady) Good GPI contrast (factor of 4). Spectra identical to those from shot -006. (No EDD feature in the SOL, fairly large velocity sigmas) Try RF but lower power. (perhaps producing a smaller E_r well so the feature we are hunting for gets slower and thus easier to see) |
| Feb 4 2010 11:34:52:800AM | 1100204008 | Istvan Cziegler | NINJA puff at t=0.72s
APD trigger @ t=0.70s ICRF: 2MW starting at t=0.6s Outer Gap is ~0.95cm (steady) Good GPI contrast (factor of 2). 7 ELMfree H-modes. Spectra are back to where we were on shot -005. We will start I-mode section now. |
| Feb 4 2010 11:42:14:630AM | 1100204009 | Istvan Cziegler | NO NINJA
APD trigger @ t=0.70s ICRF: 4MW starting at t=0.6s B_T = 5.8T Disrupted at t=0.36s |
| Feb 4 2010 12:46:31:797PM | 1100204011 | Istvan Cziegler | NO NINJA
APD trigger @ t=0.80s ICRF: 4MW starting at t=0.6s (actual output was 3MW) B_T = 5.8T Outer Gap is ~0.8cm (steady) We had an I-mode. Reflectometry sees QQC at 150kHz-250kHz. There IS an indication of a broad feature in the edge propagating in the EDD. Fast and weak. We should see if the puff makes it better. repeat with NINJA |
| Feb 4 2010 01:04:40:793PM | 1100204013 | Istvan Cziegler | No plasma.
|
| Feb 4 2010 01:37:30:640PM | 1100204015 | Istvan Cziegler | NINJA puff at t=0.82s
APD trigger @ t=0.80s ICRF: 4MW starting at t=0.6s Good I-mode. Transitions into ELMfree at 1.1s. Outer Gap ~0.7s (steady) Good spectra with the puff.(~2 contrast) OK QQC on 4 columns, from rho=-1.47cm to rho=-0.33cm 150kHz < f < 200kHz Very clear branching is observed on the IDD side in the edge. Similar to very low density shots AND previous I-mode data, except the velocities are very sharp now. There are a number of ELMs on top of the "I-mode" phase. |
| Feb 4 2010 01:58:08:553PM | 1100204016 | Istvan Cziegler | NINJA puff at t=0.81s
APD trigger @ t=0.80s ICRF: 4MW starting at t=0.6s Good I-mode. Transitions into ELMfree at 1.1s. Outer Gap ~0.7s (steady) Good spectra with the puff.(~2 contrast) OK QQC on 4 columns, from rho=-1.47cm to rho=-0.33cm strongest at rho=-0.7cm 150kHz < f < 250kHz Very clear branching is observed on the IDD side in the edge. |
| Feb 4 2010 02:17:28:873PM | 1100204017 | Istvan Cziegler | NINJA puff at t=0.81s
APD trigger @ t=0.80s ICRF: 4MW starting at t=0.6s Good I-mode. Transitions into ELMfree at 0.85s. Maybe caused by the inner wall puff? Try pushing it back to see if the two things are correlated. Outer Gap ~0.7s (steady) All sorts of beasts in I-mode. QQC at the same frequencies and wavenumber, branching on the IDD side, slow lobe on the EDD side in the edge. Fairly strong EDD motion in SOL in the H-mode none after the H-mode. The IDD branching is present in the H-mode as well as the I-mode before it. |
| Feb 4 2010 02:25:12:000PM | 1100204018 | Istvan Cziegler | NINJA puff at t=0.81s
APD trigger @ t=0.80s ICRF: 4MW starting at t=0.6s Outer Gap ~0.7s (small excursions) Good I-mode, transitions into H at t=0.95s following the inner wall puff! Is this due to fueling? Again, all 4 features are observed in the I-mode each with a different profile. The QQC is observable from rho=-1.5cm to rho=0.02cm f=150kHz to f=250kHz |
| Feb 4 2010 02:45:39:100PM | 1100204019 | Istvan Cziegler | NINJA puff at t=0.81s
APD trigger @ t=0.80s ICRF: 4MW starting at t=0.6s Outer Gap ~0.7s (small excursions) NO inner wall puff. The transition at t=0.9s seems to be aligned with the ELM crash at that time just like in shot -017 OK APD signal (contrast ~2) I-mode spectra have 4 features. QQC goes out to rho=-0.31 only. The second I-mode (after 1.15s has a higher freq QQC and no secondary EDD feature in the edge) H-mode spectra have 2 features and almost no radial profile at all! |
| Feb 4 2010 02:55:10:560PM | 1100204020 | Istvan Cziegler | NINJA puff at t=0.81s
APD trigger @ t=0.80s ICRF: 4MW starting at t=0.6s Outer Gap ~0.7s (small excursions) Inner wall puff at 0.96s The transition at t=0.9s seems to be aligned with the ELM crash at that time just like in shot -017 and -019, it had probably nothing to do with the fueling. OK APD signal (contrast ~2) I-mode spectra have 4 features. QQC goes out to the separatrix. H-mode spectra are now VERY similar to I-mode except the QQC is missing! We will try to start dropping the density. It is a good sign that we saw a change in QQC freq in shot 019 when the density dropped. |
| Feb 4 2010 03:09:30:503PM | 1100204021 | Istvan Cziegler | NINJA puff at t=0.81s
APD trigger @ t=0.80s ICRF: 4MW starting at t=0.6s only had 3MW! Yijun will see into that. Outer Gap ~0.8s (small excursions) Inner wall puff at 0.95s No transition. No clear I-mode probably due to lower power. repeat with hopefully more power. |
| Feb 4 2010 03:27:56:163PM | 1100204022 | Istvan Cziegler | NINJA puff at t=0.81s
APD trigger @ t=0.80s ICRF: 4MW starting at t=0.6s NL04~0.9e20 Outer Gap is ~0.7cm (small excursions) QQC mode in the I-mode edge. 200kHz < f < 250kHz Branching on the IDD side with different profiles for the separate branches. |
| Feb 4 2010 03:41:10:780PM | 1100204023 | Istvan Cziegler | NINJA puff at t=0.81s
APD trigger @ t=0.80s ICRF: 4MW starting at t=0.6s Outer Gap is ~0.85cm (small excursions) Good APD contrast (factor of 2.5) We MAY have a QQC early with very at a very low frequency. Arturo says it's something he sees quite often but would not have identified it with the QQC. The wavenumber and the prop direction is the same on the GPI though, and so is the radial profile. We will repeat to see if this is reproducible. |
| Feb 4 2010 03:55:23:643PM | 1100204024 | Istvan Cziegler | NINJA puff at t=0.81s
APD trigger @ t=0.80s ICRF: 4MW starting at t=0.6s Outer Gap is ~0.85cm (small excursions) Good APD contrast (factor of 2.5) Shot disrupted at t=1.15s. We have good data before that. Not much of an I-mode. Again. This might be caused by the inner wall puff fueling. I'll turn the inner puff off again. |
| Feb 4 2010 04:14:17:073PM | 1100204026 | Istvan Cziegler | Early disruption at 0.5s |
| Physics Operator Comments | |||
| Feb 4 2010 09:11:39:637AM | Robert Granetz | I'm substituting as physics operator for Ron until 10:30-11:00 or so. First shot: set up seg 2 from 1090909023; update all magnetics-related wires; copy density trace from last shot yesterday (because valve chopper board is still not back in), and adjust nl_04 to 0.6e20 m-2. Set Btor to 5.4 T, Ip to 1.2 MA. Copy PG3 voltage programming in seg 2 from last shot yesterday. Adjust PG4 pre-fill to be 25 ms. | |
| Feb 4 2010 09:37:32:317AM | 1100204001 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 01 -- Plasma, disrupted at t=0.50 s. EF1L was pinned at its rail. There was also a locked mode.
Bt=5.4 T, Ip=1.15 MA. q95=2.8 at the disruption. SL has decided that this
was a bad shot for his purposes.
Next shot: load seg 2 from seg 2 of 1100202018; adjust nl_04 feedback to account
for the lack of the chopper board (decrease P gain; introduce strong D gain)
Also decrease pre-fill for disruption recovery; Also import engineering
settings from that shot (1100202018)
|
| Feb 4 2010 09:54:51:433AM | 1100204002 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 02 -- Plasma, full length. 0.8 MA, 5.4 T, nl_04=0.7e20 m-2 during the RF; Prf=3.6 MW.
Next shot: copy PG3 voltage programming from last shot yesterday (because the PG3 chopper board is
still not in); tweak early nl_04 programming; move RCUR out by 4 mm to reduce outer gap
by 8 mm (from 15 to 7 mm); also add 3 ms back to pre-fill
|
| Feb 4 2010 10:07:50:233AM | 1100204003 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 03 -- Plasma, full length. 0.8 MA, 5.4 T, 0.7e20 m-2 (target); Prf=3.4 MW; numerous ELMfree
H-modes. Outboard gap is varying alot due to the H-modes, but averages around 8 mm.
Next shot: raise Ip to 1.0 MA
|
| Feb 4 2010 10:24:32:100AM | 1100204004 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 04 -- Plasma, full length. Ip=1.0 MA; 5.4 T, 0.7e20 m-2 (target), SNL, 3.5 MW. Again we
got numerous ELMfree H-modes, so raising Ip didn't help. I think they're ELMfree
H-modes, but Istvan says that there's a QC mode observed in the GPI data.
Next shot: no DPCS changes
|
| Feb 4 2010 10:44:50:530AM | 1100204005 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 05 -- Plasma, full length. 1.0 MA, 5.4 T, 0.7e20 m-2 (target), LSN, 3.5 MW. Numerous ELMfree(?)
H-modes.
Next shot: move ZCUR down by 5 mm to make SSEP more negative (i.e. farther from double-nullness);
also no RF on the next shot
|
| Feb 4 2010 11:02:09:927AM | 1100204006 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 06 -- Plasma, full length. 1.0 MA, 5.4 T, 0.7e20 m-2, LSN, ohmic. SSEP reduced by 3 mm, as desired.
Next shot: no DPCS changes, but increase the GPI (NINJA) pressure of H2, and also increase the gain on
the GPI imaging array
|
| Feb 4 2010 11:07:48:023AM | 1100204007 | Robert Granetz | Shot 07 -- Plasma, full length. 1.0 MA, 5.4 T, 0.7e20 m-2, LSN, ohmic. Ron is back and will take over as physics operator now. |
| Feb 4 2010 11:16:07:793AM | 1100204007 | Ron Parker | Next shot: Same as 007, but with 2 MW ICRH |
| Feb 4 2010 11:27:36:937AM | 1100204008 | Ron Parker | Shot 8 ran flawlessly, stuttering H-Modes.
Next: Revert to part 1 of the run plan (I-Mode) |
| Feb 4 2010 11:31:01:533AM | 1100204008 | Ron Parker | The programmed shot will be 1091203020 (segment 2) |
| Feb 4 2010 11:57:00:183AM | 1100204009 | Ron Parker | Shot 9 disrupted early |
| Feb 4 2010 12:30:50:057PM | 1100204010 | Ron Parker | Snot 10 ran full length with programmed field, current and density.
Next: reduce outer gap by 8mm |
| Feb 4 2010 12:39:04:560PM | 1100204011 | Ron Parker | Shot 11 ran well, good outer gap, Rf at 3 MW for the most part.
Argon pulse at 0.6 will be moved to 0.3-0.35 for next shot |
| Feb 4 2010 12:47:11:060PM | 1100204012 | Ron Parker | Breaker on EF 3 won't go in, no power shot. |
| Feb 4 2010 01:00:07:717PM | 1100204012 | Ron Parker | Power room and cell access |
| Feb 4 2010 01:05:25:903PM | 1100204013 | Ron Parker | EF4 PLC problem, no plasma. Should go next time. |
