| MP 534 Foil/AXUV Bolometer Calibration in Helium
This run will use He plasmas, seeded with a Ar and (separately) N2 to assist "calibration" of the Foil and AXUV diode bolometers. ECDC in He the night before B-SIDE-LOWER at 2.0 psi Ar 1) Working gas changeover and RF conditioning. Load 1080411024 (USN, Ip= 1MA, nl04=1.0) with cryopump Run ICRF at 3 MW using only D+E from 0.4-1.4 and ramp from 3.0-1.0 from 1.4-1.6 IMPINJ at 1.55, injecting tungsten 2) Add a dash of radiation Once ICRF stable add Ar gas puff from 0.3-1.2, adjust pressure if necessary Add IMPINJ pulse at 1.35 when confident it won't kill the plasma Repeat until LYMID/H-alpha/Neuts shows low D-level 2-1) HIREXSR crystal size calibration Once repeatable Ar-seeded plasmas are demonstrated, cell access to install crystal cover. Repeat at least two Ar seeded plasmas 3) Large outer gap scan Load 1071221002 which has an outer gap scan from 2-15 cm Turn off ICRF Reduce Ar puff to 0.3-0.5 seconds 3-1) Once repeatable shots are demonstrated, cell access to REMOVE crystal cover Repeat Ar seeded gap scan 4) Change B_SIDE_LOWER to 8.0 psi N2 and repeat (2) 5) Repeat (3) with N2 |

| Got most of the SL_PLAN finished despite some duds and early disruptions. Got several good plasmas for intensity calibration of AXUV and foil bolometers using Ar seeding and spatial calibration using Ar seeded plasma with a large outer gap scan.
Piggybacking on to this I was able to get matched RF and gap scan plasmas with and with out the crystal mask for the He-like HIREXSR crystal. The W injections worked out very well and I was able to isolate the spectral lines from W on XEUS and get impurity confinement times using McPherson. The N2 seeded plasmas went OK, but didn't create the strong edge radiation layer I was hoping, even w/o ICRF. Still they're very useful for the N V emission comparison using the Ly-alpha cameras and CXRS and seeing the He-like spectra on XEUS. |

Run summary for Friday 2010/02/05
MP534 - Foil/AXUV bolometer calibration in helium (half-day)
Session leaders: M. Reinke
Physics operator: R. Granetz
We got off to a slow start because of several mistakes made in the setup of
the gas plenum system, and to a minor problem with the alternator. But by
shot 3 we were getting helium plasmas with lots of impurity gas puffing
(argon, then nitrogen). We also did a few shots that scanned the outer
edge inward, and these worked reasonably well too.
At about 11:00 the run was paused for a few minutes to allow Congressman Ed
Markey and his party to tour the C-Mod cell and see the tokamak.
Scorecard: 14 plasmas
2 dud (due to EF1U problem)
1 fizzle
0 power supply tests
0 no-power MDS shot cycle

Total: 17 shot cycles

| Feb 5 2010 09:11:36:997AM | 1100205001 | Matt Reinke | Dud |
| Feb 5 2010 09:47:13:713AM | 1100205002 | Matt Reinke | Shot ran but seems like D2 was the working gas, not He. RF ran well.
NEXT: Move on to seeding with Ar. Enable 2.0 psi puff from 0.4-1.2. Add W injection at 1.55 seconds. |
| Feb 5 2010 10:05:14:737AM | 1100205003 | Matt Reinke | Good shot, plenty of Ar, W injection large but not a killer. Bolometer signals look great, too. Still some neuts.H-a/Ly.
NEXT: Repeat to degas |
| Feb 5 2010 10:19:31:647AM | 1100205004 | Matt Reinke | Lost density control, getting nl04~1.5 and huge MARFE. Flash heating to degas the walls, I guess.
NEXT: Repeat w/ density control, please. Lower target to nl0=0.8 to try and avoid MARFE. |
| Feb 5 2010 10:32:53:760AM | 1100205005 | Matt Reinke | Full length shot. Still density control problems.
NEXT: Bob's tweaking gas, but otherwise repeat. |
| Feb 5 2010 11:03:50:960AM | 1100205007 | Matt Reinke | Excellent steady density shot.
NEXT: Repeat w/ HIREXSR He-like crystal masked |
| Feb 5 2010 11:24:37:953AM | 1100205008 | Matt Reinke | Wonderfully reproduced shot! HIREXSR w-line down about 1/2 as expected and the measured ion temperature reduced on w/z but not on Ly-a. Good test of finite crystal effects!!!!
NEXT: Repeat after the Gentleman from Massachusetts gets out of the cell. |
| Feb 5 2010 11:34:03:097AM | 1100205009 | Matt Reinke | Early disruption. Would like to have another repeat w/ crystal cover but want to move on.
NEXT: Load outer gap scan plasma. ICRF off, IMPINJ off, Ar puff from 0.3-0.4. |
| Feb 5 2010 12:05:07:280PM | 1100205010 | Matt Reinke | Good outer gap scan on this shot with plenty of Ar.
NEXT: Repeat shot with an additional 0.7-0.8 Ar puff. |
| Feb 5 2010 12:05:23:843PM | 1100205011 | Matt Reinke | Dud, power supply failure.
NEXT: Repeat 010 w/o crystal cover and remove the 0.7-0.8 Ar puff that was supposed to be in 011. |
| Feb 5 2010 12:16:16:740PM | 1100205012 | Matt Reinke | Early injection killed shot.
NEXT: Try again to get a repeat of 010 |
| Feb 5 2010 12:29:00:743PM | 1100205013 | Matt Reinke | Good repeat of 010 w/o the crystal cover.
NEXT: Repeat 008 w/ N2 puffing. Turn off cryopump, and put 6 psi N2 in B-SIDE-LOWER. |
| Feb 5 2010 12:47:06:330PM | 1100205014 | Matt Reinke | Good shot. See N2 in the plasma and residual Ar. Plasma handles the N2 just fine.
NEXT: Increase N2 pressure to 10 psi. Decrease ICRF power to 2 MW. |
| Feb 5 2010 12:58:31:223PM | 1100205015 | Matt Reinke | Good shot.
NEXT: Repeat w/o RF. |
| Feb 5 2010 01:09:56:680PM | 1100205016 | Matt Reinke | Ugh, early disruption.
NEXT: Last shot, try one more time. |
| Feb 5 2010 01:23:31:560PM | 1100205017 | Matt Reinke | Shot disrupted early, looks like an injection, but still got the data I wanted from it. |

| Feb 4 2010 10:00:06:840PM | Robert Granetz | Load seg 1 from seg 1 of most recent shot (1100204030). Keep pre-fill pulse at 50+ ms; Cryopump on. Load seg 2 from SEG 4 of 1080411024 (USN, 1 MA, 5.4 T). Update all Bp- and flux-dependent wires. Load nl_04 with nl_04 from most recent shot (valve driver board still not replaced, copy PG3 voltage programming from most recent shot), and program nl_04=1.0e20 m-2. Program PG1 from t=0.3 to 1.2 s, but disable for beginning of run. Load seg 3 from SEG 4 of 1071221002 (ramped RCUR & Ip). Update all Bp- and flux-dependent wires. Load nl_04 with nl_04 from most recent shot (valve driver board still not replaced, copy PG3 voltage programming from most recent shot), and program nl_04=0.7e20 m-2 (same as 1071221002). Program PG1 from t=0.3 to 0.5 s. Save (the night before) as 1100205000 in /home/granetz/pcs_scratch | |
| Feb 5 2010 09:12:01:933AM | 1100205001 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 01 -- Dud, almost no pre-fill gas. The B-top plenum was mistakenly filled to 2 psi only. There's also
a minor problem with a gas valve in the alternator house.
Next shot: try again
|
| Feb 5 2010 09:31:17:300AM | 1100205001 | Robert Granetz | After shot 1 the alternator had to spin down. This is causing a delay in starting shot 2. |
| Feb 5 2010 09:51:45:400AM | 1100205002 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 02 -- Plasma, full length. But the fueling plenum was filled with D2, even though my run setup
clearly specified helium. 1.0 MA, 5.46 T, 0.9e20 m-2, USN. Prf=2.9 MW (D+E)
Next shot: repeat, but with helium. Also enable the Ar puff (B-side-lower); also tweak Btor; also
reduce the P and D feedback on nl_04 to account for helium recycling
|
| Feb 5 2010 10:07:33:283AM | 1100205003 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 03 -- Plasma, nearly full length; disrupted at t=1.69 s during the rampdown. W injection
at t=1.55 s. Lots of argon radiated power. Prf=2.9 MW.
Next shot: tweak up nl_04 P gain, turn on nl_04 I gain; move W injection to t=1.3 s.
|
| Feb 5 2010 10:21:32:477AM | 1100205004 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 04 -- Plasma, disrupted at t=0.74 s. Large density overshoot (nl_04=1.6e20 m-2), although the
fueling valve was not open much. Perhaps it was the argon puff? RF pulse? marfe?
Next shot: turn off integral gain on nl_04, decrease nl_04 to 0.8e20 m-2; reduce pre-fill
pulse by 3 ms (disruption recovery)
|
| Feb 5 2010 10:35:26:043AM | 1100205005 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 05 -- Plasma, full length. Density control is not good enough.
Next shot: adjust PG3 programming, which is going to take a few shots because we don't have the
usual chopper feedback circuit, so the valve control is very non-linear;
Add 2 ms back to pre-fill
|
| Feb 5 2010 10:47:05:500AM | 1100205006 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 06 -- Plasma, but very short. Lots of hard x-rays. Startup looks okay. Not sure what the
problem was.
Next shot: no DPCS changes
|
| Feb 5 2010 10:57:42:490AM | 1100205007 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 07 -- Plasma, nearly full length. Density looked pretty good. Startup needs some work.
1.0 MA, 5.4 T, 0.9e20 m-2, USN, Prf=2.9 MW.
Next shot: reduce pre-fill by 3 ms
|
| Feb 5 2010 11:11:26:260AM | 1100205008 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 08 -- Plasma, full length. Very similar to previous shot; good density control.
1.0 MA, 5.4 T, 0.9e20 m-2, USN, Prf=2.9 MW. Tungsten injection at t=1.3 s.
Lots of argon puffing. Still have early hard x-rays, and the startup still
has a slight pause in the early current rampup.
Next shot: reduce pre-fill 1 ms
|
| Feb 5 2010 11:26:09:157AM | 1100205008 | Robert Granetz | We paused the run to let Congressman Ed Markey and his party tour the C-Mod cell. |
| Feb 5 2010 11:39:06:147AM | 1100205009 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 09 -- Plasma, disrupted at t=0.43 s. I think this was due to an impurity injection. Huge early hard x-ray
signal.
Next shot: switch to 2nd part of MP, the outer gap scan plasma. Turn on segment 3, which I have preloaded with
the desired shot. But reduce the argon puff to 100 ms (was 200 ms), and copy over all the relevant
traces for nl_04 (PG3 programming, P, I, D gains) and set nl_04 to 0.7e20 m-2
|
| Feb 5 2010 11:49:56:260AM | 1100205010 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 10 -- Plasma, disrupted at t=1.42 s. This was a limiter discharge which scanned the outer edge inward,
and it worked reasonably well. The current is also ramped down to keep q95 nearly constant.
Ohmic. DNB fired into plasma, but I_beam was only 0.5 amps.
Next shot: add a 2nd argon puff at t=0.7 s for 100 ms.
|
| Feb 5 2010 11:59:42:687AM | 1100205011 | Robert Granetz | Shot 11 -- Dud. EF1U switch opened way too early. Next shot: try again; remove 2nd argon puff |
| Feb 5 2010 12:17:15:830PM | 1100205012 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 12 -- Plasma, but it got killed at 22 ms by a big injection. Plasma current got up to 120 kA, so
it was not a fizzle.
Next shot: try again, no changes
|
| Feb 5 2010 12:29:48:510PM | 1100205013 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 13 -- Plasma, nearly full length. Outer gap scan, just like shot 10. Ohmic.
Next shot: reload shot 8 (radiative shot), except switch argon to nitrogen, and turn off cryopump (so
decrease the pre-fill to 25 ms). Turn RF back on.
|
| Feb 5 2010 12:44:15:623PM | 1100205014 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 14 -- Plasma, full length. 1.0 MA, 5.4 T, 0.9e20 m-2, USN, Prf=2.9 MW. Tungsten injection
at t=1.3 s. Ugly startup.
Next shot: reduce pre-fill by 3 ms; increase N2 pressure to 10 psi
|
| Feb 5 2010 12:55:34:753PM | 1100205015 | Robert Granetz | Shot 15 -- Plasma, full length. Decent shot, but terrible startup. Next shot: repeat, but turn off the ICRF; increase pre-fill by 6 ms |
| Feb 5 2010 01:07:51:790PM | 1100205016 | Robert Granetz | Shot 16 -- Fizzle. Bad startup. Next shot: add 4 ms to pre-fill |
| Feb 5 2010 01:21:13:200PM | 1100205017 | Robert Granetz |
Shot 17 -- Plasma, disrupted at t=0.74 s due to an injection. Startup was much better, but still huge
hard x-ray signal
End of (half-day) run.
