| Run plan for 1100209
MP 593: Vertical equilibrium shifts for triggering ELMs SL: Jerry Hughes PO: Ron Parker Prep: -- Overnight boronization followed by He, then D2, ECDC -- Working Gas Species: Deuterium -- ICRF at 80 MHz at 4--5 MW level. -- Special gas puffing: 1psi Ar puff enabled, puff at 0.3s, 50ms in length 10psi D2 NINJA puff enabled for GPI, CXRS --- please consult SL before triggering NINJA puff. -- A-Coils: Standard configuration -- LBO may piggyback near end of flattop --- please request SL permission before actually firing. -- Cryopump should be available for beginning of run Required Diagnostics and their set up: 1.) Edge TS, no position changes. 2.) ECE. Optimize for pedestal top 3.) 0-D Fast D-alpha for ELM timing 4.) Fast magnetics. Digitize for full length of shot. 5.) Fast EFIT set up from 0.8 to 1.1s Desired diagnostics: 1.) Passive and GP-assisted CXRS. 2.) PCI. Unmasked configuration, digitizing from 0.4 to 1.6s. 3.) Reflectometer. Set 0.5s digitization window to begin at 0.8s. 4.) Fast D-alpha GPI. 5.) Bolometry. 6.) Lyman alpha. 7.) HIREX Sr. Run plan: 1. Reproduce 1100202017, keeping Ip, nl04 demand the same. Also leave ZCUR as programmed, with a 40ms modulation period and 1ms rampup/rampdown from 0.9 to 1.4s. RF program should ramp from 1.5MW to 3.5MW from 0.6 to 0.8s, and stay flat at 3.5MW until 1.5s. The difference now is that we will use the cryopump. It will take a few shots to recover from boronization and to bring up the RF. Once a full length H-mode is achieved, repeat with the ZCUR modulation removed. If added pumping prevents us from achieving the same conditions achieved on 1100202017, then try a shot with the cryopump warm. GOAL OF PART 1: Recover from boronization and establish a high power EDA H-mode. Compare the jogged vs. unjogged case. APPROX. # OF SHOTS: 5--7 2. Raise RF flattop to max. available power. Begin shot-by-shot density scan, with ZCUR modulation. This should both reduce EDA access and give us hotter pedestals. Try L-mode target nl04 of 8e19, 7e19 and 6e19. Look for ELMs. GOAL OF PART 2: Try to promote ELM triggering by lowering collisionality. APPROX. # OF SHOTS: 3--4 3. Test modulation scheme at higher Ip. Keep similar RF power trace. a. Try 1.0MA with target nl04=1e20. Based on SMW's latest simulations, we should reduce modulation amplitude demand to 0.004m in order to prevent overshoot. b. If the 1.0MA case is stable, raise Ip to 1.1MA. Lower modulation amplitude demand to 0.0025m. c. If neither (a) nor (b) is stably modulated, lower Ip to 0.9MA. Set modulation amplitude demand to 0.004m with target nl04=9e19. GOAL OF PART 3: Try to use the scheme in higher confinement H-modes with more ELM-free qualities. Document any changes in the plasma introduced by jogs. APPROX. # OF SHOTS: 4--6 4. In the highest current case that was stable (if that was 0.9MA or more), try a density scan down in increments of 2e19 until 6e19 is reached. Keep similar RF power trace. GOAL OF PART 4: Combining goals of 2 and 3. APPROX. # OF SHOTS: 0--3 5. a. If ELMs have been triggered at any point, repeat the successful discharge and see whether some degree of ELM pacing is possible by varying the drive frequency shot-to-shot over the range of 20--100Hz. b. If ELMs have not been triggered in 1--4, then find a suitably stationary H-mode with modulation and raise the baseline ZCUR so that the upswing of the modulation takes the discharge just through double null. Look for changes in the H-mode, including ELMs. GOAL OF PART 5: APPROX. # OF SHOTS: 4--6 6. If we exhaust steps 1--5 with no ELMs, and there's time, try to make an I-mode and see if we can trigger ELMs there. Keep similar RF power trace. a. Load shot 1091203015 (1.2MA, 5.6T). Insert ZCUR modulation from 0.9 to 1.4s. Parameters: ModMax= -.004m, ModMin=0.0m , trampup/down=.002 s b. Load shot 1100204014 (1.35MA). Insert ZCUR modulation from 0.9 to 1.4s. Parameters: ModMax= -.004m, ModMin=0.0m , trampup/down=.002 s GOAL OF PART 6: Shake and bake. APPROX. # OF SHOTS: whatever's left |

| Here is a short initial summary:
Despite some data system delays and a number of pesky fizzles, we got a lot of interesting stuff today. Significant accomplishments included: 1.) Reestablishment of modulation scheme @25Hz in 800kA EDA H-modes. (Shot 012) 2.) Established modulation scheme @25Hz in 800kA ELM-free H-modes. (016) 3.) Established modulation scheme @25Hz in 1MA ELM-free H-modes. (023) 4.) Established modulation scheme @25Hz in 1MA EDA H-modes. (017,019,022) 5.) Established modulation scheme @70Hz, 100Hz and ~200Hz in 1MA EDA H-modes. (024,025,028,030) 6.) Demonstrated some degree of triggering and/or synchronization of small ELMs, and compared directly with a case with no modulation. (017,019,022,024,025,028,029,030) As an initial scoping study went, this was very successful. Small ELMs were triggered in a number of cases, although they seemed to have very little instantaneous effect on the edge pedestal and confinement. Future work should concentrate on trying to find operational space and perhaps more aggressive jog parameters where larger ELMs can be triggered. |

| This run followed an overnight boronization, after which followed 3 hours of discharge cleaning, 2 hrs in helium and 1 hour in deuterium.
The run proceeded with a few short delays in the morning due to hangups in the engineering action monitor and data systems.Fortunately the delays were fairly short and the problems were quickly resolved thanks to Josh. The main problem today was the lack of a consistent startup, resulting in many fizzles or early disruptions. Nevertheless the good shots that were obtained with vertical position modulation were interesting and seemed to clearly demonstrate the use of the modulation technique to pace or cause ELM's, to the extent that they could be identified on the H alpha emission. Scorecard: 29 attempts at plasma, 2 no power shots 16 full length shots 9 fizzles 3 disruptions >= 1 s |

| Feb 9 2010 09:08:40:473AM | 1100209001 | Jerry Hughes | No power shot. |
| Feb 9 2010 09:42:04:833AM | 1100209002 | Jerry Hughes | Injection at 0.92s. Disrupts at about 1s. No obvious H-mode. You can see the
modulation on the H-alpha. Got through 2 modulation cycles and it disrupts on the 3rd. Magnetics data is lost. |
| Feb 9 2010 09:53:20:900AM | 1100209003 | Jerry Hughes | Fizzle.
Cell access for 3 grad students (see how they run . . .) PO is a grumpy gus about it. |
| Feb 9 2010 10:08:25:233AM | 1100209004 | Jerry Hughes | Turning off modulation for this shot.
Progress! 800kA. Long EDA H-mode. Density trace looks pretty good. No RFNET data, but Wukitch says the transmitters look like they gave 1MW, ramping to 3MW. One fault from J. We are missing some additional data: Bolos, GPC, edge TS. Peak Wp is close to 120kJ. 1100202017 had 125--130kJ. |
| Feb 9 2010 11:05:32:253AM | 1100209005 | Jerry Hughes | Data came in. RF ramp is looking fairly good. Prad is low.
Long EDA H-mode. WE are heating up the outer divertor tiles (4th and 3rd row, no sign of tungsten yet.) No TS data, due to a YAG problem. |
| Feb 9 2010 11:06:19:147AM | 1100209006 | Jerry Hughes | More power early. Up to 4MW at 0.8s. Nice pedestal, but a big W injection
at 0.87s. Another H-mode at 1s . For next shot, back off power demands. |
| Feb 9 2010 11:15:50:427AM | 1100209007 | Jerry Hughes | Better. Long EDA H-mode. Peak Wp of 145kJ. beta_n=1.34. H98=1. Small-ELM-like
hash in the high confinement phase. Small injection at 1s blows it away. Great RF trace. Flat at 3MW. E faults starting after 1.1s, but no big deal. Next shot: Time to modulate. Put the modulation back in from 0.9 to 1.4s |
| Feb 9 2010 11:20:39:500AM | 1100209008 | Jerry Hughes | Fizzle. |
| Feb 9 2010 11:35:11:657AM | 1100209009 | Jerry Hughes | Fizruption.
Time to crank out the Fiz Rev Letter. |
| Feb 9 2010 12:05:52:900PM | 1100209010 | Jerry Hughes | EDA H-modes with modulation.
First H-mode is humming along quite nicely before the modulation begins at 0.9s. Looks okay on the upswing, but on the downswing we start to raise the radiation. Prad grows until there is an injection at about 1s. 2nd H-mode is better. Prad does not continuously increase, although there is still an injection. Speculation is that the strike is simply too low on the divertor. We still see big dTs (>100C) on both the 3rd and 4th row of tiles. Matt has given me the safe word. NExt shot will try to raise strike by mean rise in Z position. PO is raising ZCUR program by 3mm, and decreasing modulation demand to 5mm only. |
| Feb 9 2010 12:07:46:963PM | 1100209011 | Jerry Hughes | Fizzzzzz |
| Feb 9 2010 01:03:52:517PM | 1100209012 | Jerry Hughes | Long EDA H-mode with higher ZCUR than before, reduced modulation demand.
Upswings are ~7mm, and downswings are ~10mm. Prad decreases during H-mode, as observed last week. The decrease continues after the modulation ceases, though. By the end of the shot, confinement has improved considerably. Hash on D-alpha, ICRF comes back. Frequency of QCM is dhifted with the dz modulation on PCI and magnetics. |
| Feb 9 2010 12:44:13:103PM | 1100209013 | Jerry Hughes | Fizruption |
| Feb 9 2010 12:55:08:060PM | 1100209014 | Jerry Hughes | Fizzle. |
| Feb 9 2010 01:13:49:770PM | 1100209015 | Jerry Hughes | We're back. We got the lower density. RF is less happy now, and they need to
retune. Multiple H-modes, ELM-free. There is a hint of QCM at 0.97--1.0s. Next shot: retry. |
| Feb 9 2010 01:37:46:203PM | 1100209016 | Jerry Hughes | ELM-free H-modes. The 2nd one stays at a high level of confinement for 80ms,
before the Prad takes off. Maybe the modulation reduced the rate-of-rise? It's not easy to judge. There are hints of a weak QCM in the latter H-modes Next: Move on the 3a. Higher Ip. |
| Feb 9 2010 01:49:14:533PM | 1100209017 | Jerry Hughes | RF tune needs work.
2 H-modes, pretty cold. It's hard to make anything out of the hash on H-alpha, but there does seem to be a tendency for it spike whenever there's a downward stroke on the vertical modulation. Are we pacing Type III ELMs? |
| Feb 9 2010 02:03:58:900PM | 1100209018 | Jerry Hughes | Fizzle. |
| Feb 9 2010 02:23:22:910PM | 1100209019 | Jerry Hughes | Long steady EDA H-mode, ~2.5MW of RF. Fairly dense. Teped,max~400eV.
Seems to be a lot of variation in the reported pedestal parameters from TS, even though the confinement seems to be monotonically decreasing throughout the H-mode. Perhaps aliasing with the modulation? There still tend to be blips at regular intervals in the H-alpha. They seem to be correlated with both the upswings and the downswings this time. There are plenty of blips that are uncorrelated with the programmed jogs as well. |
| Feb 9 2010 02:24:02:140PM | 1100209020 | Jerry Hughes | This is a magical shot with no actual plasma, but a lot data traces which
are identical to those on shot 19. |
| Feb 9 2010 02:39:45:773PM | 1100209021 | Jerry Hughes | Rough shot. Bad ramp-up.Moly brick. No ICRF. Modulation goes unstable. |
| Feb 9 2010 03:00:39:953PM | 1100209022 | Jerry Hughes | Radiative, pretty early. RF is clean, but the core radiation leads us to be
underpowered. There are blips in D-alpha between 0.9 and 1.1 are correlated with the rises and the falls. There's probably not much I can do about the high core radiation here, so let's proceed to lower the density at this Ip. (I don't want to go to 1.1MA.) |
| Feb 9 2010 03:19:22:507PM | 1100209023 | Jerry Hughes | Several ELM-free H-modes. Looks like there are some paced blips. If they are ELMs
they don't seem to be relaxing the pedestal at all. Next: Go back to 22 and increase rate of modulation. Period will be 14ms. |
| Feb 9 2010 03:35:10:140PM | 1100209024 | Jerry Hughes | 1.0MA, target nl04=1e20
Long, nominally EDA H-mode. It looks like we trigger again on the rises and falls. But, now we are at ~70Hz. Amanda reports some interesting crash-like behavior on several edge ECE channels ---maybe a density effect. |
| Feb 9 2010 03:53:06:287PM | 1100209025 | Jerry Hughes | Trying a 10ms period on the modulation.
Result is pretty cool. Spikes on the D-alpha are very fast now, peaking in activity between 1.1 and 1.4s. Radiation is fairly under control. Next: Be aggressive and try for 200Hz modulation. |
| Feb 9 2010 03:59:32:053PM | 1100209026 | Jerry Hughes | Fishizzle. |
| Feb 9 2010 04:22:28:563PM | 1100209027 | Jerry Hughes | Fizzle. |
| Feb 9 2010 04:32:00:490PM | 1100209028 | Jerry Hughes | A most excellent shot. Very distinct spikes on the D-alpha (and RF) coinciding
with the modulation period. Radiation is nearly flat, decreasing toward the end of the shot. The ELMs are not exactly regular. |
| Feb 9 2010 04:44:50:103PM | 1100209029 | Jerry Hughes | Turned off modulation. ELMs go away, but the global behavior of the shot
is otherwise the same! So the ELMs are triggerable, but they do nothing. Welcome to C-Mod. |
| Feb 9 2010 04:59:47:890PM | 1100209030 | Jerry Hughes | Reload the 200Hz modulation and attempt to bring the RF power up.
The step up in RF wasn't entirely successful. Yijun will try to improve for next shot. Otherwise pretty similar to 28. |
| Feb 9 2010 05:05:09:720PM | 1100209031 | Jerry Hughes | This was the finest fizzle so far today. |

| Feb 9 2010 09:39:10:067AM | 1100209002 | Ron Parker | Diagnostic gate valves are not closing at overpressure trip.
Maybe related to a mod put in by Joe -- Andy is trying to find him. |
| Feb 9 2010 09:43:05:880AM | 1100209002 | Ron Parker | Action monitor hung up again. Josh is on it.

| Feb 9 2010 09:50:03:650AM | 1100209003 | Ron Parker | Well after all that, the shot fizzled. Perhaps a little too much gas, but maybe not. We'll shoot it again and see. Meanwhile, the first cell access of the day. |
| Feb 9 2010 09:57:22:713AM | 1100209003 | Ron Parker | Just to make things simpler during the tuneup phase, we have removed the Zcur modulation for the next shot. |
| Feb 9 2010 10:09:46:467AM | 1100209004 | Ron Parker | So finally a decent shot.
Looks like we'll have to add a bit more prefill, breakdown gas pressure ~ 0.05 mTorr. Increase PG pulse from 50 to 55 ms. RF data system problems |
