1100210: MP597, mode conversion flow drive at 8 Tesla.

the purpose of this experiment is to explore mode conversion flow drive at 8 Tesla using all available RF power.

Main diagnostics: HIREX, ECE, PCI, helium monitor, etc.

After successfully bringing up field to 8 T (see step 1 in PO plan), we will run the following:

nl04 = 0.7, Ip 1 MA, Upper-single-null,
RF power 3 steps (1.6, 3.2, 4.8 MW, ~200 ms each step), J in +90 degree phase.

1). he3 scan. 50 ms, 100 ms, 200 ms, 250 ms (i may change the puff length on-the-fly based on the result, for example, 50, 100, 150, 200, or 50, 75, 100, 125 ms).

2). If little rotation seen in 1), choose the best He3 puss length, and lower nl04 to 0.5 @ Ip = 1.0 MA. If still no flow, raise Ip to 1.2 MA and nl04 = 0.5.

3). Density scan, nl04 = 0.5, 0.9, 1.1e20.

4). Scan Ip. 0.8, 1.2, 1.4 MA (two shots each at different J phase).

5). Run constant RF power and get the max. rotation.

6). If there is any time left, run LSN plamas.

Physop Plan:
------------

This run will go to Btor=8.0T. The first several shots will be working our
way up in field, roughly 6.5T, 7.0, 7.5, 8.0. The breakdown will be on
the rise for some of these, so I'll need to be adjusting the EF1's and EF4
currents as we go. May as well deal with the cryopump at the same time.
It could be a long, snowy day.

1. Work field up to working level (8T)
For each shot, monitor alternator, TF temps, bus, ...
Load seg2 from 1091204004, decrease nl04 from 0.9 to .7e20
and change TF
a) Engineering TF limit=185,
DPCS program=-180e3, (seg1 and 2) start at -1.5sec, rampdown from 1.3sec
Also rampdown Ip from 1.3sec.
Adjust pg4 for cryopump
b) Engineering TF limit=205ka
DPCS program TF=-195000 (seg1 and 2)
In seg1: IC_EF1U=IC_EF1L=-5850, IC_EF4 to -1290
c) Engineering TF limit=215
DPCS program (seg1 and 2): TF=-208000
Seg1: IC_EF1U=IC_EF1L=-5875, IC_EF4=-1285 (depending on results of b)
d) Engineering TF limit=235kA
DPCS program (seg1 and 2): TF=-224000
Seg1: IC_EF1U=IC_EF1L=-5900, IC_EF4=-1280 (depending on results of c)
If necessary, reduce flattop time to keep alternator rpm's above
the lower critical value, ~1510rpm.

Shot cycle at 8T will be 20 minutes minimum in RECOOL

2. Begin MP#597 experimental program step 2 (5 shots):
a) Enable He3 puff (PG2) at 0.2sec, 50msec duration.
b) 100msec puff
c) 150msec puff
d) 200msec puff
e) 250msec puff

3. If called for by SL, reduce nl04 and/or raise Ip (? shots)

4. Scan nl04: 0.5, 0.9, 1.1e20 (5 shots)

Probably will run out of daylight by this point, but if there is
time left continue with:

5. Ip scan (9 shots): 0.8, 1.2, 1.4MA, at least 2 shots per current.

6. Change RF power program (2 shots)

7. Go to lower null and look for rotation in H-mode. There is no
way we're going to get to this step, so I'm not even going
to set up a LSN shot.

Got 7 plasmas with RF (some TF problems and RF problems).

We had done some scan on He3, and also changed density.

Lower density gives some higher rotation, and also it seems 150 ms He3 puff gives me the highest rotation. Also the rotation seems to be satuated at high power (4.8 MW) at 1 MA.

Rotation up to 90 km/s has been observed. But this level is close to the intrinsic rotation. Maybe there is too little He3 for mode conversion.

Interestingly, we got record Te and Ti in shot 12

New physics regime for further study: Like optimal LHCD target? Ti heating for transport study, etc..

Run will continue on 1100211, and check SL_summary there.

MP#597 Mode conversion flow drive at 8T
SL: Y. Lin
PO: wolfe
EO: Cochran, Byford, Dekow

A difficult but productive day of high field operation. It's not
clear whether significant flow drive was observed, or just the
level consistent with the normal intrinsic rotation, but very
hot plasmas, over 8keV, were produced. This experiment has been
held over for another day tomorrow.

All shots used the cryopump, which behaved perfectly today despite
the long and non-constant shot intervals. All shots had TF starting
at -1.5sec, and current and TF inverting at 1.3sec. Breakdown was at
elevated field, typically at 7.3T after shot#3, and used modified
EF1 and EF4 currents, as indicated in the logbook.

The work-up shots to get to the 8T level had one hiccup, a
TF crowbar before t=0 on shot#3, which was supposed to be 7.5T. The
shot actually ran through about .7sec before disrupting.
Six fuses were found to be blown in converter 6 and one in converter#2.
For the remainder of the day fuses were checked between shots, and
no further fuse failures were found.

After a 100kA TF test on shot#4 we resumed going up in field, and
shot#6 was the first 8T pulse and the start of the MP. The TF breakers
pulled out after the shot was over and all current was out of the
supplies. This problem continued for much of the day and remains unexplained.
On some shots there were spurious IOC faults at about 4.25 sec,
and on others there were just unspecified Type 2 faults. Bill and Gary
are setting up instrumentation to try to determine the cause. Later
in the day we dropped the field from 8.0 to 7.8T and the breakers stayed
in.

Most shots had (unintentional) injections of various magnitudes. Shot#9
disrupted in flattop, and also experienced a series of faults in the
aftermath, including a TF crowbar and an alternator fault. It appeared
that a DC breaker at the alternator opened around 1.35sec,
shortly after the TF inversion,
resulting in loss of excitation. The resulting drop in line voltage
caused the TF crowbar at 2.06sec. This problem did not recur.

Runaways were a problem all day. I ended up raising the puff as far
as 75msec, getting over .1mTorr pressure at t=0, but was unable to
eliminate the runaways, except for shots immediately after disruptions.
Tweaking EF4 10amps more positive did not seem to help. Neither did tweaking
the BR_0. I ended up putting both of those back to their original settings
by the end of the run, following a pair of fizzles (#15,16) that were probably
due to the high pre-puff. Shot#11 was an early runaway disruption with
vertical thrashing. I reduced the P gain on ZCUR3 before .24sec, and this
seemed to reduce the vertical thrash that was happening around that time
on all shots, though it didn't completely cure it.

The RF had its own difficulties, losing two or three shots when the
RF control signals did not get sent from their waveform generator,
resulting in nice full length ohmic 8T shots. However, when they managed
to fire the RF seemed pretty reliable into these upper null L-mode
plasmas. Many shots had Te > 8keV according to both ECE and TS, and
Catherine reported neutron Ti of 9keV on at least one shot, although
this is sensitive to the D deficit and these shots all reported very
high Zave values, around 7! Neutron rates over 1e14 were seen on several shots, although the EFIT Wplasm values did not seem consistent with the Rdd,
mostly W < 130kJ.

We had RF shots at two densities (7 and 5e19) and two currents (1 and 1.2MA).
He3 puffs were scanned from 50msec to 200msec, with most data at 150msec.
Shots #6-13 were at B=8.0T. Shots#14-17 were attempts to use 7.8T, but
we didn't get any successful shots with full RF power. The first two
1.2MA shots (#13,14) disrupted early in rampdown with vertical instability
problems. This was fixed (?) by slowing down the ramp and the clearin
ramp.

Once we got into the program, the TF temperature began to ratchet up
with 20minute shot intervals, and it was necessary to slow this down
further to keep the TF resistance under 2mOhm. Probably 25 or 30 min
will be required. The oxygen level in the cell was also showing low
for much of the day, not that there was a lot of call for cell access.

Scorecard:

   Duds 0
   Fizzles 2

According to IHH log entry for 1090903, the magic values
for change in EF1 and EF4 current are :
  dEF1/dTF = 2.46 A/kA dEF4/dTF = 0.59 A/kA.
The example shot from 1060706010 has TF=198kA at t=0,
so a delta of 48kA would mean
  dEF1 = 118A, dEF4=28A. => EF1 from -5900 to -5780, EF4 from -1300 to -1272
For first shot TF=-180kA, change the EF1 settings from -5900 to -5830,
leave EF4 at -1300; note RRP was running all day yesterday with EF4=-1315

Long discussion about what happened on the crowbar.
It seems a DC breaker opened at the alternator at 1.35sec,
causing loss of excitation and showing 1.5kA of varistor current.
The subsequent drop in alternator voltage caused low-line fault
resulting in TF crowbar at 2.05sec.
Mike is checking whether a setpoint on a mechanical breaker
at the alternator is responsible for the trip.

Plasma full length, but breakers pulled after the shot, no crowbar.
No runaways, No RF. Large injection on Zmeter at 22msec, not seen
on Halpha. Injections on bolo at .42 and 1.2sec. Nl04 nice at 5e19.

Feb 10 2010 02:50:20:717PM1100210011Steve Wolfe
Shot#11: Add pg3 puff from .35 to .45sec to reduce drop in
density at divert time

Early disruption, .17sec, runaways in startup again.
No faults from TF or alternator this time.
No bounce in startup. Big vertical thrash before it disrupts,
it's been doing that to some extent.

Next: tweak BR_0

Feb 10 2010 03:08:45:750PM1100210012Steve Wolfe
Shot#12: BR_0 offset from .0005 to .0002,
trying to reduce vertical thrash in startup.
Drop ZCUR3 P from 6 to 4 before .35sec, to reduce thrash after seg switch
No change in gas or pg4, expect the disruption to help runaways for one shot

plasma full length no runways, lots of neuts, over 1e14
GPC's saturate at 8keV.
TF breakers pulled after shot again
Not clear if vertical behavior is really improved either early or
between .1 and .2sec. Nl04 below 5e18 at 20msec, but essentially
no runaways this time.

Next: raise Ip to 1.2MA

Feb 10 2010 03:29:23:900PM1100210013Steve Wolfe
Shot#13: raise Ip to 1.2MA
Drop zcur3 P from 4 to 3 between .116 and .24sec
PG1 (argon) from 80 to 100msec at .3sec

plasma disrupts at 1.55sec, lots of runaways early, 1e4 neutrons in pulse
Time to do something about the runaways; wish I knew what.

Next: pg4 to 75msec, increase clearin in rampdown (disruption was vertical)

Feb 10 2010 03:55:23:290PM1100210014Steve Wolfe
Shot#14: pg4 to 75msec,
ramp clearin starting at 1.3sec in rampdown
Increase first argon pulse from 100 to 150msec
Decrease Btor to 7.8T (-218400A)
Load at 10-Feb-2010 15:35:12.00
Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1
Open tree done

plasma disrupts at 1.4sec, lots of runaways, fewer neutrons
Vertical instability seems to start earlier, need to fix rampdown
No TF faults or breaker trips this time.

Feb 10 2010 04:22:26:940PM1100210015Steve Wolfe
Shot#15: put clearin ramp back to 1.5sec, slow down after.
Drop nl04 demand to 0 at 1.3sec, slow down Ip rampdown
No startup changes, see if disruption helps the runaways

Fizzle. well that's one way to get rid of runaways.
pressure was up a little bit, to .107 mTorr. I guess I better not raise
pg4 anymore. Breakdown is a little late.

Next: drop IC_EF4 back to -1280

Feb 10 2010 04:36:38:147PM1100210016Steve Wolfe
Shot#16: drop IC_EF4 back to -1280
Fizzle again.
Need to drop the fill?

Next: pg4 from 75 to 65msec, BR_0 back to .0005

Feb 10 2010 05:03:31:893PM1100210017Steve Wolfe
Shot#17: pg4 from 75 to 65msec, BR_0 back to .0005
Still trying to get the 7.8T shot with all RF
This time wait until cryopump is fully cold and 28 peak drops
before going to INIT.

plasma full length, some runaways, better than before.
No RF!
No TF faults. Maybe that 2.5% decrease in TF really makes the difference?
Vertical thrash in startup is back, I think the BR_0 tweak is the
difference there; the apparent z position starts at +.03, and rises
to .05 before dropping back down. I would recommend reducing BR_0 offset
to zero, but it's probably not a problem.
Ratiomatic at .08mTorr at t=0.

END OF RUN
(more 8T tomorrow)
