This run will continue on MP 597: mcfd at ~ 8T. We will try out the following 'knobs' until clear flow drive is observed. RF steps up to 4.8 MW. 3 steps. Start with shot 1100210017, but hope to get RF power. Bt = 7.8, nl = 0.5, Ip = 1.2 MA, USN plasma. 1. Bt 2. He3 puff length (possibly 2 puffs). 3. Ip 4. Density. After flow drive has been found, we will run constant RF power and see how much rotation I can get. If time permits, I will run LSN plasmas to get H-mode.

SL_summary for 1100211 (and also 1100210): For the two run days, total 17 plasmas with RF power: 1100210: 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 13, 14, 1100211: 3,4,5,6,8,12,13,14,15,16 In these two runs, we have had RF heated plasmas at Bt = 7.8, 7.9 and 8.0 T, Ip = 1.0 and 1.2 MA, nl = 0.7e20 m^-2 and 0.5e20 m^-2. Antennas at +90, dipole, and -90 phases, also He3 level from 0 puff to 250 ms puff. We ran max power up to 4.8 MW with all antennas. Maximum toroidal rotation observed was about 80 km/s. At the same current, the core rotation increases vs. the change of stored energy (dW). However, I can also claim that the rotation follows the input RF power. Since all plasma are in L-mode, it is not possible to clearly separate dW and Prf. Rotation at +90 degree (1.2 MA) is about a factor of 2 of that at -90 degree phase at the same RF power (or the same dW). The rotation of dipole phase is lower than +90, but larger than -90. The difference vs. antenna phases suggests that the observed rotation is not solely intrinsic (at least in the sense of dW/Ip Rice scaling). Almost all these plasmas had rather high temperature (up to 9 keV at the peak of sawtooth). -90 degree phase tend to have a much larger and longer sawtooth oscillations. Further analysis is required to sort things out.

There were many distruptions today. Several shots ended before 200 ms and were lost either because of injections, or by instabilities in the control system. Steve Wolfe suggested several changes that seemed to help. We observed wild variations in the EFC currents until these changes were main. We also made many changes to the rampdown parmeters including density, RCUR, CLEARIN, amd ZXU, to account for the 1.3 s rampdown time. We finally had a couple of shots near the end of the run that ramped down properly. We still lost the plasma early on the last shot of the day (17). So there is still work to do on the vertical control issue. The engineers worked very hard today to understand the type 2 fault. It seems to be caused by temperature excursions in some of the TF silicon. We ran with 20 to 25 minute shot cyles to keep the TF resistance plasma 01,02,03,04,05,06,07,08,10, 11,12,13,14,15,16 fizzle 09,17

"For some reason the waveform code did not create the temporary files, or generate any error messages about creating those files. " he is working on it. Possibly another system is overwriting the temporary file... Josh fixed the problem.

Large gap. The entire APD array is sampling the SOL. Some curious action is going on today. Before the RF trips, most of the SOL is seen to propagate in the EDD sense, close to the separatrix (0.4cm) there are multiple lobes on this side of the k_pol-f-spectra, farther out (~1.7cm) it becomes a single lobe at very high velocity (~7.5km/s) in the EDD direction and CHANGES into IDD propagation at ~rho=2.5cm! This is not reproduced after the RF trips, and the plasma starts to leak with no clear reason (density falls). In this phase almost NO poloidal propagation is observed.

Same phenomenology as shot -004 and -003 until the RF tripped. The 3MW step in the RF still exhibits all the features seen in those shots, albeit the high freq part is weakened. Moving trigger 0.1s earlier in order to see if the 2MW stage is similar.

We may be seeing an extreme high velocity IDD feature (>15km/s), the overall profile is similar to those in previous shots (EDD feature in SOL, switch in the far SOL). At the RF trip at t=1.25s the SOL is evacuated. As soon as the RF turns on, the plasma is back. Is the RF making plasma in the SOL?
