Run Plan
The purpose of this run is to continue the L-mode parameter scans began in MP586. This includes running very low density plasmas to look for the existence of a linear impurity confinement regime that is believed to be present below a nq value of approximately 4. Additionally, scans will be performed in kappa (1.0, 1.3, 1.8), Ip (.4,.6,.8,1.0 MA), and Bt (2.6, 3.9, 6.5 T ) to separate out their effects on the impurity confinement.

Toroidal Fields: 2.6, 3.9, 5.2, and 6.5 T
Plasma Current: .4 to 1.0 MA
Working Gas: D2
Density: nl04 .2, .3 and .6e20
Boronization: None
Equilibrium: USN, L-mode (1091202019 for equilibrium only) then modify from there.
Standard Overnight ECDC
Cryopump: Yes: for low density shots.

Impurity Blow-Off Injection: Yes
Special gas puffing: Argon and Neon available

ICRF Power:

-For low density shots:
J-antennae: 78 MHz, maximum power available
D & E antennae: 80 MHZ, maximum needed to supplement J to get 4 MW total.
RF power steps for all shots are programmed as the following: Until 0.7 sec: Ohmic, 0.7-0.9 sec: 1 MW, 0.9-1.1 sec: 2 MW, 1.1-1.3 sec: 3 MW, 1.3-1.5 sec: 4 MW (unless otherwise specified)

-No ICRF Power for Kappa/Ip/Bt Scan

Required Diagnostics:
Thomson Scattering (ne and Te)
ECE (Te)
TCI (ne)
Soft X-ray arrays (all 4)
McPherson (setup to view the peak of the Li-like Ca (~r/a = .5 to .6 )
HiReX Jr. (setup to view He-like 3.177 Angstrom Ca line at a core view)
HiReX Sr. (setup to obtain Ti, Er profiles from Argon puff)

Requested Diagnostics (not required but desired)
Reflectometry (setup to view density fluctuations)
LLNL (XUES) Spectrometer (Set up to view Li-like and possibly Be-like Li in the confinement zone at the lowest possible integration time for good signal. Although this might not be possible for L-mode)
PCI (set for low k fluctuations)

Overall plan:
The purpose of this run is to continue the L-mode parameter scans started on 1091202 and 1091204. This includes running very low density plasmas to look for the existence of a linear impurity confinement regime that is believed to be present below a neq value of approximately 4. Additionally, scans will be performed in kappa (1.0, 1.3, 1.8), Ip (.4,.6,.8,1.0 MA), and Bt (2.6, 3.9, 6.5 T ) to separate out their effects on the impurity confinement.

We managed to get all the way through the proposed run plan during the course of the day despite a number of hardware related difficulties. We were unable to use the RF at the low densities because they caused such a dramatic change in the density when on. Therefore the low density shots were often run as ohmic shots and at first glance it seems that there is no obvious drop in the impurity confinement time with decreasing density, even when below the linear/saturated boundary of nq~4. This will have to be examined in more detail but this is my initial observation. We moved on to the kappa/ip/bt scan and were able to get most of the cases proposed in the run plan. There was some difficulty at 2.6 T but 3.9 and 6.5 T operated much better. I abandoned all of the .4 MA cases because at such low current when operating with no RF power, the signal on the spectrometers of He-like Ca was too low for an useful data. A kappa scan was achieved which included typically values of approximately 1.15, 1.4 and 1.7. Some cases achieved slightly higher than 1.7 kappa but they often disrupted. After achieving the Bt scan/kappa/ip of the proposal, we moved back to normal field (5.4 T) to perform the same kappa/ip scan. Overall, despite a somewhat rocky start, a good deal of the desired cases were achieved and will be analyzed in more detail shortly.

Feb 17 2010 09:56:35:097AM1100217001Nathan HowardDue to the problems with the RF, it seems as though we might not be able to have any more RF for the rest of the day. We are going to proceed with ohmic shots at the same density and currents specified in the run plan but without the RF power steps
