Run plan for MP562. Goals: Measure the rise and decay of the ICRF heated fast ions. Modulate ICRF 40 ms on and 40 ms off over the flattop, keeping density, current, field, and ICRF power constant throughout a shot. Explore the change in the fast ion evolution by scanning current, ICRF and density. Needs: Cryopump RF D,E,&J up to 4 MW Possible impurity seeding Standard temperature/density diagnostics 1. Establish fiducial: start with 1091202027 with ICRF signal from 1090730027. 1 MA, 1.3 MW (from J) nl_04 = 0.5E20. Cryopump enabled. Get a good plasma with good CNPA signals. This may require raising the density if ICRF affects the density, and may also require cell accesses to adjust the CNPA aperture. J-top in heating phasing 0,pi,pi,0. If the equilibrium is unsatisfactory for this shot, 1100205014 is also acceptable with a lowered density. Estimated 5 shots. 2. RF power scan: Scan J power to 2 and 3 MW, keeping density constant. at 3 MW switch to heating solely from D & E. If the CNPA signal shows a difference between D&E and J get an additional shot at 2 MW from D&E. Finally, get 4 MW from J and D&E combined. Need to avoid H-modes though, this is likely to set the ICRF power limit. Use impurity seeding if ICRF is struggling. If significant differences in the fast ion signal are seen between the two antennas, we may need to adjust the run plan to account for this. Estimated 10 shots 3. Current scan. At best reliable ICRF power without H-modes (4MW if possible) and best reliable density (nl_04 = 0.5E20 if possible) scan current, getting points at 600 kA, 800 kA and 1.2 MA. Estimated 6 shots 4. Density Scan. go back to 1 MA and get additional discharges at nl_04 densities of 0.8E20 and 1.1E20. (ICRF power at 4 MW if possible) If previous steps were done at a density near 0.8E20, get shots at densities of 0.5E20 May need to lower ICRF power to avoid H-Modes, if this is the case, drop down to the 3 MW level from section 2 Estimated 4 shots 5. Phasing scan. Go back to 1 MA, 3 MW ICRF, 0.5E20 (reload of shot from step 2) and change J phasing to 0,pi/2,pi,3pi/2 Estimated 2 shots Total estimate 27 shots. Hopefully that gives enough leeway for fizzles and aperture issues. If not we can get single data points for some of the paramters instead of doubling them. If extra time we can run a field sweep to calibrate CNPA J-top antennas or explore parameter space in any area that was very interesting.

Summary for 1100218 Successfully completed power scan, current scan, and a shot with different J-antenna phasing. (sections 1,2,3 and 5 of the SL_plan) However, because of some difficulties with fizzles and disruptions in the middle of the run, we were unable to get multiple shots at each desired data point. We did not get a density scan, however, we do have two shots at 5.8 T in an attempt to see faster ions on the J-Top CNPA with limited success. The density scan would require some extra shots to figure out appropriate CNPA apertures, and with low oxygen problems, the cell accesses would take too long. Had some problems with W injections. These seemed to occur most commonly at 800 kA, USN plasmas. Some early results: A clear difference in the energy of the fast ion tail is observed between 600 kA and 1.2 MA. (shots 28 and 29) Differences are harder to see at different current scalings. This is the first indication we've seen on the CNPA of fast ions being limited by current. In fact, the 1.2 MA shot had a slightly higher density but still had a more energetic tail. More ICRF power does not seem to increase the tail temperature. Rather it merely increases the count rate of the fast ions. This was expected from previous CNPA data, but we have a pretty solid confirmation of this now. Changing J Antenna phasing makes no noticeable difference at all on the fast ions.

The machine ran very well for the first half of the run, with 2 fizzles, and 1 disruption during the first 15 shots. Beginning with shot 16 and continuing to shot 24, we encountered a string of fizzles and disruptive shots, interspersed with only two full length shots (17 and 19). There seemed to be two problems, injection of W, which was likely responsible for the disruption problem, and an unreliable startup. The W problem was ameliorated by running near-inner-wall limited and the startup problem was fixed by running an interesting startup from 1100217010. This had a 75 ms prepulse at 0.575 s and had an unusually early timing for PG 3. Remarkably, the fill pressure reached 0.1 mTorr with the cryopump, but the startup proved to be robust for the last 9 shots. There was only one minor delay today due to loss of the port heaters and a breaker that wouldn't clear. These were expeditiously resolved and only about 30 minutes of the run were lost. On the whole, a fairly good day with much of the SL's run plan realized. Scorecard: 32 plasma attempts, 6 fizzles, 5 disruptions and 21 flattop shots reaching rampdown.
