Physop plan:
------------

SL wants to start from something close to 1100211008 (nl04=.5e20,Ip=1.2MA
Bt=8.0) with He3 puff=50msec, two RF steps @3MW and 5MW, Jphase=-90deg.

Start from 1100211016 (seg1 and seg2) with the following changes:
Seg1:Change IC_EF1U & L from -5770 to -5750; also points at
[.073,.101] from -4000 to -3850 (aiming to improve
      vert. stab in startup.
     IC_EF4U from -1280 to -1285A (compensate for extra 20A on EF1's)
TF_Current from -221000 to -224000. Leave this in seg1 even if
      we go down later.
Drop Pg4 from 60ms to 54msec for first shot, raise as needed
Seg2: IC_EF4U target from 2000 to 2500 (alleviate ef2l demand a little)
      TF_current from -221000 to -224000 (assuming SL wants 8.0 not 7.9T)
Ramp TF down starting at 1.2sec
      Verify PG2 puff at 50msec
Consider reducing Ar puffs (PG1) after first shot

Take first shot as above. Consider moving divert time earlier by 150 to 200ms
for later shots, to try to reduce early Mo. Maybe adjust current rise
(Ip gains before .5sec). Otherwise, SL plan is to take half a dozen shots
at these settings with different He3 puffs and RF phase.

For step 3 of run plan, drop Ip from 1.2 to 0.9MA
For step 4 of run plan, back to 1.2MA, raise nl04 from .5 to 1e20

For step 5, go to lower null, small SSEP, high strike point, looking
for H-modes, preferably EDA (have we ever done that at 8T). Possible
target to modify is 1091022002, change Ip to 1.2MA, raise TF, remove
late zcur ramp (or not). Import this into segment 3.
Seg3: Ip from 1.0 to 1.2MA
      TF_CURRENT from -150000 to -224000, rampdown at 1.2sec
      PG2 puff from .2 to .25sec

I have all of these changes saved as 1100219000 on alcdata-test::/cmod/trees/test/pcs and ../dpcs so I can load them for tomorrow.

I will probably be in late on Friday, and Jim Irby will sub for me as
physop until I arrive.

This run, in combination with 1100210 and 1100211, provide a
reasonable scan of He concentration and density for characterization
of He3 minority heating regimes. The low He puff rates gave poorer
heating performance than 150 ms puff. Increasing the density to
nl04~1 also reduced the heating but the radiation was significantly
lowered. Increasing the target density with the same He puff resulted
in similar He concentration as the lower density discharges. The
heating efficiency (neutron rate and central temperature) appeared
sensitive to power level and antenna phase. Overall heating
effectiveness appeared better at low density. We tried a couple of
H-mode discharges to investigate the response in the PCI.

Physop Summary for Friday, Feb 19, 2010
MP#508a D(He3) Minority and MC heating (8T)
SL: Wukitch
PO: Irby, wolfe
EO: Pfeiffer, Byford, Fitzgerald

The run got off to a rocky start when the charging supply for the
EF1L comm bank failed and had to be replaced. This tested ok (shot#1)
Then on the shot#2, the first plasma attempt, we got a fizzle which was
eventually traced to a problem with the OH2L power supply. The problem
was that the supply voltage signal, which is used for the internal
feedback to the DPCS demand, was reading low, only about half of the
actual output voltage as measured on the bus (after switch close and
before commutation). This has happened before, apparently most recently
on 1090819014, with fix verified the following day on test 1090820002.
The symptom was that the OH2L current was more negative than usual by
~1kA, and the BR_0 was off by about 2mT. The DPCS feedback was trying
to correct the BR_0 by commanding less negative voltage, but the
current remained too negative. The diagnosis is complicated by the fact
that the supply voltage as seen on the COMPARE_VOLTS_DPCS scope seemed
to be following the DPCS demand as it should. However, the actual voltage
on the bus was much more negative, consistent with the observed current.
Today the engineers (Gary and Andy, with Bill Cochran consulting by phone)
reseated the master control board and power cycled everything, and a re-run
(shot#3) of the PLC 10kA test shot 1090820002 confirmed that the bus and supply
voltage readings were again in agreement. The next plasma attempt (Shot#4)
was successful and the OH2L problem did not recur today.

Shot#4 ran through at 8.0T, but the SCR junction temp fault (Type 2) did
fire just before EOF at 1.2sec, and the breakers came out at the end of
the shot. The spurious IOC indications we had seen last week again
occurred after 4sec, with no current in the magnet. We then backed off
the field to 7.9T (-221kA) and the Junction Temp fault did not recur. We
really do seem to be right up to the edge at these field settings.

There were no further technical problems with power systems the rest of
the day. After shot#11 the TF resistance had gotten up to 1.9mOhm and
we increased the cooldown time to 25 minutes, which kept the resistance
below 1.8mOhms.

We managed to get through a decent fraction of the run plan, with the
SL choosing to skip and consolidate steps. We scanned the He3 puff from
50ms to 150ms and did -90 and dipole phase (J-port) at 1.2MA,7.9T,0.5e19/m^2.
Best heating seemed to be at 150ms puff, not too much difference with
J phase. All shots had D and E also operating, except for some faulting.
The RF waveforms typically had two or three power steps, up to ~5MW.
Mo levels were high again, with very high Zeff apparently almost all due to Mo.
Te0 values weren't quite as high as on 1100211, but close. Neutron rates
were up to 1e14/sec or so, and we got another Neutron Alert. Over half
the shots disrupted either in flattop or in early rampdown. I eventually
managed to improve the rampdown, which had some vertical stability
problems, but injections continued to be a problem. Early discharges
e.g. #4 and 8, had runaways in the rampdown, apparently seeded during the
high temperature phase. Adding some density in rampdown, and starting
rampdown while the RF was still on seemed to eliminate this. On shot#6 I
moved the divert time a little earlier, but this didn't make any
obvious improvement on the Mo influx, so I didn't pursue it further.

We also did a couple of higher nl04 cases (1e20/m^2), which had less
Mo and less radiation, but also lower temperature and neutrons. We never
tried the lower current case with upper null, and did not increase
the Argon puff to try seeding. JR reported that the second argon puff
was not visible on the low density shots (not burned out, but apparently
screened).

By shot#16 the SL was ready to try LSN and attempt to get H-modes. This was
successful, achieving 3 or 4 ELM-free H-modes at 1.2MA, 8e19/m^2. On #17
we tried to access EDA at 1MA, 1e20/m^2, and also tried putting in
N2 seeding through the lower divertor with H-bottom valve, since the
thermocouples on tiles 4 and 5 were showing > 100C delta-T on#16.
However, the H-bottom valve chopper board once again started opening at the
beginning of pulse with zero demand, bringing the pressure up to 0.9mTorr
and resulting in a dud. This problem has been "fixed" twice now, and I think
we need to punt on the H-bottom chopper. I can produce the desired modulation
in software, either by using the modulate_wv feature on the V-waveform
directly or by the DPCS loadable procedure DPCS_PIEZO_CHOPPER, with somewhat
compromised linearity but considerably better reliability, I think.

Anyhow, after the dud on 17, we turned off H-bottom and put 10psi of N2
in B-side Lower in place of the Argon. This worked insofar as it did not
cause a disruption (100V pulse from .6 to 1.15sec), and Matt did see the
N in the plasma, although it was not clear that the divertor heat load
or the Mo level was reduced. Still, the shot ran full length, with
three rather so-so ELM-free (not EDA) H-modes. Nevertheless, two LSN plasmas
both had some sort of H-mode, which is not bad compared to previous experience
at 8T.

There were two fizzles (shots#6,7) aside from the one caused by the power supply problem on shot#2. These followed a full current disruption, but
also had the PG3 puff in seg1 moved to -30msec, in a test to see if this
would help suppress runaways. The pg3 was moved back to +20msec on shot#8,
and the pg4 puff lowered, and successful startups were restored. On
subsequent disruptions I lowered the PG4 by 10% with good success.

Scorecard:
         Tests: 2
         Duds 1 (H-bottom fault)
         Fizzles 3 (one OH2L problem)
Plasmas 12 (one early disruption, 3 flattop disruptions)
         ========   ==

Feb 19 2010 09:18:07:730AM1100219002Steve Wolfe
Shot#2: Shot setup from last night still loaded
(8T, 1.2MA, 5e19)
Charging supply fixed and ready.

Result: fizzle, Br_0 very negative, -.0025T
OH2L is very negative. BR_0 error is about the same.
Something is not following command. Both oh2's are somewhat
negative, both around 27kA.

Feb 19 2010 10:28:37:300AM1100219003Steve Wolfe
Shot#3: It looks like on shot#2 we had a return of a pathology
that may have happened on 1090819014, namely OH2L supply voltage
reads low compared to bus voltage, and supply voltage level agrees
with dpcs demand.

Bill Cochran remembers pulling out master control board and
checking solder joints.

On 1090820002 a PLC test on OH2L was done and confirmed that
the bus and supply voltage agreed. For shot#3 we will repeat
that test, after reseating the board and power cycling the supply.

PLC oh2 test, 10kA. On the old test shot we were seeing between 10-20V
during the flattop. Need to be careful of baseline offset.

Bus voltage and supply voltage agree on this test. It's tough to tell
in flattop, but since we did not commutate the inversion voltage
is there, and they agree at around -190V

Next: try for plasma again.

Feb 19 2010 10:54:58:860AM1100219004Steve Wolfe
Shot#4: Another try for 8T, 1.2MA, 5e19,
hopefully with power supply working again.
plasma to 1.6sec, but TF breakers pulled out after shot.

Just ticked the junction temp fault, IOC's came up at end of shot.
J faulted around .95sec
Lots of density off the antennas, hardly any main puff during shot.

No runaways. Early zcur position shows no thrashing. Good startup
small vert thrash at .2sec, could be shifted RX? gain from last week?
Divert time is still .4sec; leave for now.

Next: Drop TF back from 8.0 to 7.9T

Feb 19 2010 11:09:46:657AM1100219005Steve Wolfe
Shot#5: Drop TF back from -124000 to -121000 (seg2)
Load at 19-Feb-2010 10:45:58.00
plasma to 1.1sec, runaways early.
breakers stayed in, but we didn't go to 1.2sec

Next: move pg3 puff in seg1 to -30msec, BR_0 to +.0003
He3 puff from 50 to 100msec

Feb 19 2010 11:46:03:120AM1100219006Steve Wolfe
Shot#6: move pg3 puff in seg1 to -30msec (drag the whole thing over)
 BR_0 to +.0003
He3 puff from 50 to 100msec
Move CLEARIN timing earlier by 100msec
Move zxl ramp earlier by 100msec
Load at 19-Feb-2010 11:16:42.00

fizzle. pressure was a little higher, just over .08mTorr;
not sure if it was the pg3 or the preceding disruption.
I see no response on ratiomatic before bd, I don't think it's the pg3.
BR_0 did come up as expected; apparent zcur is high, +.04m, but not
much thrashing. BD time ok (.0059s). Z-meter doesn't
burn out, Halpha looks ok, no real current rise. I think it was just
junk from the disruption.
Mass 32,28,20,18,16,14 were all higher after shot#5 than earlier today.

Next: No change, just wait it out.

Feb 19 2010 12:07:47:460PM1100219007Steve Wolfe
Shot#7: No change from #6. Relative to #5:
move pg3 puff in seg1 to -30msec (drag the whole thing over)
 BR_0 to +.0003
He3 puff from 50 to 100msec
Move CLEARIN timing earlier by 100msec (try for earlier divert)
Move zxl ramp earlier by 100msec
RGA traces spike during cryo cooldown, then drop; M32 got over 1.5e-7
then came back down during INIT. Wasn't doing that on earlier shots.

Result: another fizzle. OK, undo the pg3 move and drop pg4
Zmeter never burns out, no current rise to speak of.
Zcur still looks high, drop BR_0 back as well
Got a warning of no finite signal on f13, but it looks fine?? Bob agrees,
don't understand the warning.

Feb 19 2010 12:38:18:480PM1100219008Steve Wolfe
Shot#8: Move pg3 puff back to +.02sec, PG4 from 54 to 50msec
BR_0 from .0003 to 0
 Relative to #5:
  He3 puff from 50 to 100msec
Move CLEARIN timing earlier by 100msec (try for earlier divert)
Move zxl ramp earlier by 100msec
Load at 19-Feb-2010 11:55:54.00
Gettting another excursion on M32,28,14 during cryo cooldown. Is this
a cryo leak issue or a red herring? It's smaller this time than on 7.

Result: plasma to 1.55sec, some runaways, but not bad. Good heating,
neuts/hards to 7e13; as on #4 we see hards in rampdown. GPC2_te0 touches
8keV, less density rise during RF, but still some.
Startup is not so nice, CIII rises until 26ms, then falls and rises again.
Current turns around, then recovers.
Diverts at .34sec, not as early as I expected.
There is a glowing tile on the inner floor in front of J, visible on wide2

One TF fuse tested bad, have to change an hipot SCR before next shot

Next: 150ms on He3

Feb 19 2010 12:58:21:937PM1100219009Steve Wolfe
Shot#9: 150ms on He3, no startup changes
leave nl04 up until 1.5sec, start Ip rampdown at 1.2sec
Load at 19-Feb-2010 12:34:55.00

Result: plasma to 1.4sec,
almost lost it at 30msec, small runaway level early,
seem to have gotten rid of the rampdown runaways
RF ramps down after 1.2sec,
ECE gatevalve permissive had tripped.
Neuts over 1e14

Next: repeat with ECE

Feb 19 2010 01:18:16:797PM1100219010Steve Wolfe
Shot#10: repeat with ECE
No startup changes, although startup on 9 was terrible.

plasma, some early runaway although the startup looks better
Neuts, similar, maybe higher. Disrupts at 1.35sec, need to do something
about that, if I can. Looks like it's getting vertical problems
ECE is fine this time.

Next: RF changing phase, no change in He3 program.

Feb 19 2010 01:46:53:453PM1100219011Steve Wolfe
Shot#11: RF changing phase, no change in He3 program.
Start CLEARIN,RCUR,ZCUR ramps at 1.2sec
Load at 19-Feb-2010 13:22:58.00

plasma full length, halpha spike at .69sec, just into RF
No runaways. Neuts~1e14 (Catherine has already issued the alert)
D a little choppy, otherwise RF is ok I guess.

TF resistance is at 1.9mOhm, rising a little on each of the last
three shots. RECOOL time extended to 25minutes for next shot

Next: Repeat with D working (hopefully)

Feb 19 2010 02:08:00:277PM1100219012Steve Wolfe
Shot#12:Repeat with D working (hopefully)
No DPCS changes.

plasma to 1.1sec, disrupts during RF. Injection
Some runaways early, not terrible.

Next: Raise nl04 from .5 to 1e20

Feb 19 2010 02:39:25:420PM1100219013Steve Wolfe
Shot#13: Raise nl04 from .5 to 1e20. PG4 from 50 to 45msec (post-disruption)

plasma full length, early runaways, neuts down by factor 2, ~5e13
GPC2 now says 5keV, AEH has adjusted cal, so earlier shots may have changed
peak Wmhd~100kJ, RF clean to 4.7MW, last step up faults.
Prad much lower.
late marfe in rampdown.

Next: raise pg4 from 45 to 50msec, RF will change phase

Shot#14: raise pg4 from 45 to 50msec, RF will change phase
Still at 1.2MA, 1e20, 7.9T

Result: early disruption 0.35sec, before RF.
Some early runaways, startup looked ok, no bounce, xrays come up near
first injection at 0.08sec
Early Prad very high, 2pi foil got to 3MW at .08sec, big injections
bite out of Ip at 80msec, recovers, gets hit again at .32s. MLR
reports early Mo.

Next: drop pg4 after disruption, await instructions

Feb 19 2010 03:34:27:843PM1100219015Steve Wolfe
Shot#15: pg4 from 50 to 45msec, Try again
Still at 1.2MA, 1.0e20, 7.9T

plasma full length, no runaways, rf seems to have faulted at some point.
Neuts peak out at 3e13 at ~0.9sec. He monitor.

Next: Go to lower null (seg3), nl04=0.8, He3 puff 150, TF_CURRENT to -221000

Feb 19 2010 04:04:21:287PM1100219016Steve Wolfe
Shot#16: Go to lower null (seg3) baed on 1091022002,
set nl04=0.8, He3 puff 150, TF_CURRENT to -221000.
Ar at 50msec, SL thinks we're going to get H-mode
Leave startup alone, if it runs away then raise gas.

plasma, h-modes, disruption (in that order).
Also early runaways. Neuts to ~6e13.
Disrupts at 1.3sec, current still in flattop since I didn't
ramp it down with the field. RF mostly stayed on, max of almost 5MW.
Wmhd up to 137kJ, Prad close to 4MW.

Next: Drop current, raise density, trying for EDA at 8T

Feb 19 2010 04:31:35:317PM1100219017Steve Wolfe
Shot#17: Drop current to 1MA, raise density to 1e20,
Turn on H-bottom @50V from .60 to 1.15sec (outer div getting hot)
Leave Zcur at -.015 through EOF at 1.5sec
Clearin at 1.5 from +.003 to 0.00(ramping from 1.2sec)
Drop pg4 from 45 to 41msec (post disruption tweak)
trying for EDA at 8T

Result: Dud. Dropped pg4 too much. Or not! pressure is 0.9mTorr
H-bottom seems to have run away in seg1.
That AFOL and or chopper board will not stay off!

Next: repeat, without H-bottom. Put N2 in B-side lower.

Feb 19 2010 05:07:56:437PM1100219018Steve Wolfe
Shot#18: Turn off H-bottom and remove waveform
Load 10psi N2 in B-side lower
Change PG1 program to 100V from .6 to 1.15sec
From #17, still there:
Current at 1MA, density to 1e20,
Zcur at -.015 through EOF at 1.5sec
Clearin at 1.5 from +.003 to 0.00(ramping from 1.2sec)
pg4 from 41msec to 45msec, hope the N2 has gotten pumped sufficiently.

Result: plasma full length! Nice startup, small runaways (lt 1e13)
Three h-modes, all elm-free. Target density only got to .88e20,
not sure why; probably because I forgot to put on Integral (also Deriv) gains.
Neuts peak at close to 1e14, Wmhd only around 120kJ
Prad up to 4MW, max RF ~5MW. Divertor tiles still hot. Maybe needed
more N2, or maybe it would have been better through the divertor.
Matt confirms there was N2 in the spectra.

END OF RUN.
