Engineering setup for Tuesday 2010/02/23

MP591 - Boundary layer heat transport experiments in H-mode plasmas

Overnight: standard boronization followed by 2 hours of ECDC in helium and
  and then 1 hour of ECDC in D2, along with a 60 C bake

Run will start at 09:00 and end at 17:00.

Power systems as on 1100212032 (LSN, 0.8 MA, 5.4 T)

A-coil configuration: +Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot; Enabled (standard
configuration)

Gas Setup:
   fill B-Top            with  6 psi D2  Hybrid enabled  (PG4)
   fill B-side lower     with  2 psi Ar  Hybrid DISABLED (PG1)
  leave B-side upper     as is           Hybrid DISABLED (PG2)   
   fill B-main (C-side)  with 40 psi D2  Hybrid enabled  (PG3)
  leave NINJA            as is           DISABLED

Enable the following gate valves and shutters, assuming no vacuum problems:
  ECE, VUV, Z-bolo, HIREX-Sr
 
Torvac setup: keep gate valves open during PULSE

Specific diagnostics: edge and SOL diagnostics, divertor heat load
diagnostics including the IR camera

Run plan: start from 1100212032, which was a LSN, 0.8 MA, 5.4 T shot with
          a ramp programmed into RXL.  Set nl_04 target to 0.9e20 m-2.
          Run a bunch of shots until the RF and the divertor diagnostics
          recover from the overnight boronization.  Then begin filling in
          the parameter matrix, i.e. vary Psol, nl_04, Ip.

The tokamak, cryopump, and RF systems worked quite well today.  Nearly all
shots were full length discharges.  We spent the first 10 shots doing
post-boronization recovery for the divertor diagnostics and the RF, and
then ran a variety of densities and currents in EDA H-modes.  For most of
the day the startups were not good, with one or two outward bumps on most
shots, but I wasn't able to improve it, and it didn't seem to matter
anyway.

Primary goals for today are:

(1) Set up optimized plasma shape and strike point position for heat flux footprint measurements in 0.8 MA LSN EDA discharges.
Condition RF to 4.5 MW, condition outer divertor for heat flux measurements using strike point sweep.
(2) Having established above, begin filling in the parameter matrix of MP#591 - scan Psol, density,
and plasma current, starting at 0.8 MA

Setup:

Overnight boronization with ECDC cleanup, using parameters identical to evening of 02/11/10.

All shots today will be 5.4 tesla.
NINJA will be used. Set up will be done at run-time by GPI scientists.
ICRF up to 4.5 MW
Cryopump will be used to assist boronization recovery; it may not be needed after the first ~10 shots.

Shot Plan:

Reload from shot#1100212032. This was a 0.8 MA, 5.4 tesla shot with a sweep programmed into RXL.
Set L-mode target density to NL04 ~ 0.9e20 at RF turn-on
Set ICRF on from 0.7 to 1.5 seconds. Condition RF as needed to 3.0 MW flattop.

A. 0.8 MA, conditioning shots, L-mode target NL04~0.9e20
1. Establish steady EDA, PICRF~ 3.0 MW
Multiple shots to condition RF to 3.0 MW and sweep strike point over divertor to remove boron layer.
Optimize plasma shape, IR camera

2. Program fixed strike point.

B. 0.8 MA, RF Power and density Scans
1. NL04~0.9e20, ICRF Power: 2.0, 1.0, then 4.5 MW
Alternate between fixed and swept strike point shots.
