Run Plan for AM 1/2-day of 1100226
MP502 - HIREXSR Calibration Plasmas

This run day will consist of a series of repeated Ar seeded plasmas where we will change HIREXSR crystal size shot-to-shot in order to understand and avoid vignetting.
After about ~003 we will require a cell access after every shot.

Load 1090915020 (USN, 1 MA) turn off ICRF, set nl04 target to 0.8.
Enable cyropump for shot 001
Fill B-SIDE-LOWER with 0.5 psi Ar but leave off for shot 001

1) demonstrate target w/o Ar seeding (1 shot)
2) add steady Ar pulse from 0.4-1.4 at p=0.5 psi and demonstrate reproducibility (2+shots)
3) put on 50% He-crystal mask and check vignetting. If present move crystal and/or HIREXSR housing and repeat
4) put on 50% H-like crystal mask and check vignetting. If present move crystal and repeat (DO NOT MOVE HOUSING)
5) if have extra shots use left/right masks, 25% masks and 0% masks to extend dataset

Summary for MP502 1/2 Run
--------------------------
The tokamak ran very well and we were able to produce very repeatable Ohmic Ar seeded plasmas with plenty of signal in both H-like and He-like Ar. We were able to get a lot of data showing problems with HIREXSR vignetting on both the H-like and He-like system, but weren't able to leave the He-like system aligned and un-vignetted about the z-line which was the primary goal. The H-like vignetting needs to be compared to ray tracing to see if the brightness profile can be corrected. This impacts next Thurs/Fri runs using the system to view He-like Ca.

Obtained fully covered crystal data for both arrays and first analysis shows that almost all the background is incoherent scattering not continuum coming directly through the crystal. This will help inform whether or not background can be used to correct for vignetting in past data.

Prior to this Run:
******************
1. Tried to improve scheme for modulating ICRF, but returned to original mixers.
2. Swapped function generator to Agilent model, controllable on the local network - this saved us a bunch of power room accesses.
3. Combined sweeping frequency in modulation envelope with a reference signal at 300 kHz for calibration purposes.
4. Lost Active MHD antenna drive for the day in the process of modifying control unit to be able to drive on amplifier at a fixed 300 kHz, but the other at a sweeping frequency.

Goals for the Day:
******************
1. Establish whether or not PCI signal in Channels 9 and 10 during 1100122 run was direct pickup from the antenna.
2. Try to reproduce resonances from 1100122030
3. Explore diverted plasmas - try to produce resonances with upper and lower single null plasmas.
4. Check scaling of resonant frequencies with Alfven speed.
5. Compare ICRF modulation drive to active MHD drive.

Results:
********
Thanks to the crew, particularly for staying for the last, late shot.

We took 14 shots. There were two fizzles, one no-power shot, and two HIREX Sr calibration shots; the remaining 9 shots were given to ICRF modulation studies. Of these, 3.5 had successful ICRF modulation; the remaining shots encountered problems with impedance matching for D antenna, as well as potentially overmodulating the carrier signal.

1. It is fairly clear at this point that the PCI has direct pickup of the ICRF modulation.
2. Reproducing resonances from 1100122030 - we managed to reproduce this shot,
3. Diverted plasmas: We attempted three shots with a lower-null plasma. We obtained full length plasmas, but were unable to achieve a sufficient match for D antenna, and so there was no ICRF modulation present in these shots.
4. Shots 26 and 27 explore two field levels - not a wide scan in parameter space.
5. Active MHD drive offline for the day, so we could not compare with ICRF modulation.

Shot 17:
No-power shot.

Shots 18-20:
Locked mode shots for HIREX Sr calibration, repeating 1091208026. Shot 18 was a successful locked mode, but settings on HIREX Sr were off, and so we had to do a repeat. 19 was a fizzle. 20 was the successful repeat.

Shots 21-23:
2 full-length plasmas and one fizzle. D antenna faulted - no ICRF modulation.

Shot 24:
D antenna on for two short bursts, and 1 Vpp modulation - not a very successful shot, but worth revisiting.

Shots 25-27:
Best shots of the day. Revisiting 1100122030. D antenna is on for 0.6-1 s.

PCI is off on Shot 25, but we still see sweeping signal, particularly on Channel 9 (note that modulation amplitude is low on this shot, so a smaller signal amplitude relative to Shot 26 would still be consistent with the hypothesis that the signal seen on PCI is merely pickup).

Shot 26 had a lower slew rate for more loiter time around resonances (sweep range was 420-670 kHz).

Shot 27 lowered B-field to check scaling of resonances with Alfven speed, TAE gap center frequency. Dropped lower bound of sweep range, so that range was 350-850 kHz.

Shots 28-30:
Attempt to achieve H-mode from 1100224006. Never achieved match in D antenna, and so no ICRF modulation. Short H-modes in shots 28 and 29. No J antenna in Shot 30.

Before next run:
****************
1. There are several questions surrounding the ICRF modulation setup which must be addressed - among them,
(a) how does the voltage amplitude of the modulation signal map to the level of modulation in the plasma (and in the dummy load)?
(b) are the notch filters responsible for the non-flat response of the D antenna power output as the modulation frequency is swept? Is it the narrow band of the transmitter, itself, on resonance? Some combination of these things, or something else?
2. Modulating the ICRF tends to make matching more difficult. A judicious choice of reference shots for which the matching is well characterized will help in this regard. Also, analyzing the matching from today's shots may provide useful information.
3. Active MHD drive needs to be repaired.

Physop Summary February 26, 2010, Run 1100226

The purpose of the morning run is development of x-ray spectrometer instrumentation (MP 502, HIREX-SR Calibration Plasmas). This run consisted of shots 001 - 016. The SL selected a standard discharge with argon puffing and with the cryopump on to obtain a steady state level of argon. The reference shot was 1090915020 (1 MA, USN) with a more recent segment 1 from shot 1100225032. BT was adjusted down to 5.4 T so that the GPC would not need adjustment. The impurity injector was used for aluminum injection. Natural moly injections were frequent and resulted in a few early disruptions.

The afternoon run was for MP590a- TAEs and RF tail losses and consisted of shot 017-030. A locked mode shot (1091208026) was used for rotation calibration of the HIREX-SR. Most of the run was based on reference shot 1100122030 which is not diverted. The last three shots were intended to produce H-mode using a diverted shot based on 1100224006. Aluminum injection was off for the entire pm part of the run.

There were two cryo problems. Shot 016 was delayed due to failure in the helium flow. Assume that this was due to a valve problem. Direct inspection by the engineers did not reveal a problem. The problem cured itself and only resulted in the delay of one shot.
The second problem was a fizzle on shot 023. For this shot, the pressure was twice as high as expected based on previous shots. The cryo was likely responsible for this as well.

There was a gas puff problem on shot 014: there was no gas puff. No apparent reason for this. Shots 013 and 015 were okay with regard to gas puffing.

The PF breaker pulled after shot 012.

Feb 26 2010 01:25:02:710PM1100226016Matt ReinkeLong wait to fix cryopump. Pressure jumped up to ~mTorr range a while before the shot. Probably something that helped lead to the early disruption?

Steve Wukitch's operation on D antenna matching was succesful - now achieved full power. Steve recommends that we try to stabilize I_p earlier, and also that we bring on the modulation later (on at 0.6 s) so as to wait for plasma to stabilize, and matching to settle. We will do this; I have also increased the modulation cycle frequency to 1.11 Hz (from 1 Hz) to ensure full coverage of the frequency range.
