We will atttempt to get through a long list of densities and currents (see SL plan). SL has identified reference shots for most of these from runs 1091202 and 1091204. We will start from 1091202021 with NL04=6e19, Ip=800kA. ** NOTE this is in segment 3 ** Proceed from there. Engineering setup should be fine all day, until we get to the Bt scan at the end of the primary shots, when we need to raise the TF current limit from 165 to 190 for the 6.6T case. It's not worth it to change to the low-field startup for the 3.0 T case, so we'll ramp the TF down for those cases. If we manage to make it through this list, we may try some I-mode cases. The reference shots for some of these are from 1090915020 and 027, so I'll need to recalculate the predictors for those. Note that on the high current one (1090915027) I had been fighting a locked mode and had increased the EF3 coefficient on B21_PROJ. Also, I have a comment that the density was unsteady, and later I tried adding some PG3 between .28 and .4sec. Neither of these seemed to help, as the locked mode came back on 1090915029 at the same current. Note also that Nate's list has the currents reversed, shot 1090915020 was 1.0MA and 1090915027 was 1.15MA programmed. There are probably better target choices for the latter which aren't so close to locking. This one was programmed for 8e19, but was locking early because it has a density dip when it diverts at .360sec (which is rather late). If we get to this one, I'll try using the density program for 1091016033, which has pg3 feedforward and somewhat different nl04 gains (though still not any Integral, which I'll probably add) The other backup L-mode shots in Nathan's list are unlikely to get run on this day, so I'll worry about those when the time comes. The H-mode shots at the end of the list were at least attempted today, and aren't really still part of the plan. |

| Run Summary:
The objective of this run was to revisit many of the shots that were previously run in other L-mode impurity confinement studies such as those on 12/2 and 12/4 but this time the modified HIREX Sr. diagnostic was used to look at time evolving profiles of calcium. The run plan included looking at impurity confinement's dependence on input power, current, density, and Bt. The power scan was a little bit of a mess at some points but I managed to get good HIREX sr. data for shots that had previously exhibited the RF dependence in addition to data involving shots that are outside the possible threshold for this dependence. The current scan was performed from .6 to 1.2 MA at fixed current and input power of 1 MW to enhance the signal of Hirex Sr. Due to some problems with the data systems, about 4 or 5 shots were lost and I chose to shorten the magnetic field scan to steps of 3.3 T, 5.4 T, and 6.6 T. The density scan was also performed...but not at all the proposed steps. Densities of .6, .9, and 1.2 were achieved in Ohmic at fixed current. The last 3 shots were dedicated to trying to achieve I-mode from a reference shot of 1091009009. This was unsuccesful due to RF in the first attempt and injections on the last two attempts. Overall a pretty good range of the data set that was desired...was achieved and should be useful for analysis of the impurity confinement in L-mode. |

Physics Operator summary for Monday, Mar 8, 2010
MP#598 Impurity transport (L-mode portion)
SL: Howard
PO: wolfe
EO: Cochran, Pfeiffer, Fitzgerald
We managed to get through a fair portion of Nathan's run plan, despite
a lot of problems with injections and runaways.
We started with a very strange startup disruption that hung around at
about 100kA for about 80msec before it finally died. For the second
shot I tweaked the EF4 current 15A more negative, and it ran through.
On shot#1 and
on shot#2, the chopper driver on the B-main piezo failed (no drive
to the valve). Since Willy was not available, I tried reseating the
card in slot#1 after shot#2, and this seemed to cure the problem. However,
Willy pointed out later that in fact the chopper card is in slot#2, and
the card I removed and reseated is the pulse start driver, which is not
being used. Therefore, the cure may have been just flexing the backplane
or chassis when I pulled the wrong card. Anyhow, it worked for the rest
of the day. The bypass card for the chopper in slot#2 is now located
in the top desk drawer of the physop station, and is labeled correctly.
This can either be used directly for analog mode operation of the piezo,
or the dpcs_piezo_chopper output procedure can be turned on in DPCS
to provide a software emulation of the chopper function. It should be
sufficient to load this and put the string "PULSE_GAS3" in the OUTPUTS
field in the setup widget.
Once the valve driver started working, we got on with the program plan,
but had difficulty with injections at powers above 2MW. Nathan did some
mixing and matching on the shot order, and we managed to get through over
half of his cases eventually. Most shots had some level of runaways> I
worked the pre-puff up from 50 to 65msec, without really doing much good
for the runaways, and made one change to RCUR offset, with equally poor
results. The runaways did not seem to bother the LBO program, but the
disruptions in flattop certainly did. Most of these seemed to be due
to high power injections, but we also had a few before the RF came on,
especially when we were trying for the 3.3T ohmic case. This took three
tries, #25-27, and while I did make a small programming change before
the one that worked, I don't really think it mattered.
There was one locked mode calibration shot, #22, taken from 1091208026,
which ran full length and had a killer runaway level. ECE gate valve
was closed (no permissive from the front of the room), but the density
pumpout looked like it locked on cue. Interestingly, Nate fired the LBO into
this one, and the tau_imp was longer than on unlocked L-mode shots at
the same current and density, according to JR.
We did an abbreviated field scan, just 3.3T, 6.6T, and 5.4T.
Between Shot#22 and the first actual 3.3T attempt we had a series of
no-power shots due to a data system problem. Of these, shot#23 actually
stored data from shot#22 and appears to be a full length 800kA shot, while
in fact there were no power supplies or gas puff. There were two tries at
a shot numbered 24, neither of which ran. Among other symptoms, the
transition from INIT to CHECK was not being noticed by DPCS and also
some other routines that have activity in check.
The run ended with three attempts at an I-mode case. On #31 the J-port
RF faulted out, and #32 and 33 both disrupted just after 1 sec due to
Mo injections.

| Mar 8 2010 07:57:18:930AM | Steve Wolfe | Looking at the setup on some of Nathan's other shots, I see that for 1091202026 (1MA case) I had drawn a non-zero waveform on the b21_proj wire, trying to eliminate a locked mode early. In fact, there were apparently locked modes even at 800kA on this day. I also note that in my run summary, I questioned having left the b21_proj programming in place for the 600kA shot at the end of the day, which may have overcompensated. I will start from shot#21, without the b21_proj tweak, and then load the modified version when we go up in current, or if a locked mode shows up. Probably also want to tweak up the density programming to ameliorate the dip at 0.45sec. | |

| Mar 8 2010 02:27:49:887PM | 1100308023 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#23: .6e20, .8MA, 3T ohmic seg4 off, seg2 on TF current from 148.5e3 to 80e3 Load at 8-Mar-2010 14:10:18.00 Wait a minute, that's going to be a rather low q95, increase tf_current to 88kA, B~3.3T Got nothing. Had a wait in check, not sure why. Josh was typing at the chat line. It looks like it never saw the transition to check, dpcs did not go to execute state. Some data from shot#22 is stored as #23, including plasma current! and TF, but there was no actual shot. |
| Mar 8 2010 02:46:38:503PM | 1100308024 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#24:Still trying for .6e20, .8MA, 3.3T ohmic No pulse again. DPCS does not seem to have gone to realtime according to the log. Josh says he sees it as still in check. |

| Mar 8 2010 03:29:08:423PM | 1100308026 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#26:Still trying for .6e20, .8MA, 3.3T ohmic similar early disruption at .33sec, OH1 crowbars after disruption Next: Change TF programming to bring field down slower, raise Ip slower |
| Mar 8 2010 03:40:12:733PM | 1100308027 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#27: Change TF programming to bring field down slower, raise Ip slower Shouldn't make a difference but... Plasma into rampdown, runaways tame. density nice and flat. Probably good. Next: Go to 6.6T |
| Mar 8 2010 03:53:12:763PM | 1100308028 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#28: TF_CURRENT to -181000 (limit to 190) Load at 8-Mar-2010 15:42:36.00 plasma full length. Injection at .14sec but survived; looks like there is a vertical thrash at this time. Next: back to 5.4T |
| Mar 8 2010 04:09:08:797PM | 1100308029 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#29: TF_CURRENT to -148500 add rscan to rcur and clearin at 1.32 (+4mm), 1.5(-7mm) plasma full length, some runaways early (1.5e14) Next: nl04 to 1.2e20 |

| Mar 8 2010 04:38:55:847PM | 1100308031 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#31:Try for I-mode based on 1091009009 seg2 Import seg4 from 1091009009 seg2 1MA, 8e19, 5.6T Seg2 off seg4 On Copy RCUR and CLEARIN waves from 2 to 4 for R-scan (these were the same as in the original case to which I added the R-scan before) Leave 75msec argon puff as it was. No startup changes plasma full length, no I-mode in evidence No runways. J faulted out at .71sec, D was fine stepping up to 1MW Next: repeat |
| Mar 8 2010 04:54:49:820PM | 1100308032 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#32: repeat, hope J will stay on increase argon from 75 to 100msec, still only one puff plasma disrupts at 1.1sec, runaways early 2e14, one bounce Neuts get to 2e13; looks like an injection at the end. Next: try again |
| Mar 8 2010 05:10:07:977PM | 1100308033 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#33: try again/ add integral gain=1.5 to nl04, reduce P from 9 to 6 plasma to 1.2sec, runaways are worse. Similar to 32, density a little higher (actually got 8e19). There is an injection at 1.05 that kills the temperature, then another one that finishes it off. No bounce in startup, and nl04=6e18 at 20msec, but the runaways saturate neuts/hards. END OF RUN |
