| SL Plan for run on MP 562
1. Start with shot 1100218028 but with Ip at 1 MA instead of 600 kA. ICRF timing from 1100218028. Power should be 2 MW from J and 1 MW from D (assuming there is no possibility of using E). This will be the fiducial shot for this run. CNPA setup: set F-top aperture to 204.5 and J-top aperture to 8.5. (2-3 shots) 2. RF power scan. This assumes we cannot use E Antenna. First 2.8 MW from J alone. Then 1.5 MW from J alone (may require aperture change). Then 1.5 MW from D alone. (5 shots) 3. Current scan. We had a lot of trouble with Ip at 800 kA so we'll try getting data at 600 kA and 1.2 MA. If these shots go well, we'll get another point at 750 kA. If we're struggling we'll move on to the field/phase scan. ICRF power should be the same as in the fiducial established in shot 1. 2 MW from J, 1 MW from D&E (5 shots) 4. Field and phasing scan: Change field to 5.6 T, current at 1 MA, ICRF power entirely from J but we want to switch the phase halfway through the shot. Half the ICRF pulses should be at 0,pi/2,pi,3pi/2 phasing and half the pulses should be at 0,3pi/2,pi,pi/2 phasing. Maybe repeat at 5.75 T (2-3 shots) 5. Density scan, increase density to nl04 = 0.9E20. If the CNPA signals are still reasonable, try increasing it to 1.2E20. (3-5 shots) 6. Modulation on top of steady state signal (if time): Keep D&E constant at 1 MW, modulate J 2 MW on top of the steady D&E signal. First shot should be at same plasma conditions as the fiducial. If this scheme produces interesting results, try at different currents. (1-? shots) |

| Summary for MP 562
We had a very successful run day hitting all the main points in the SL_Plan. RF scan: Got data at 0.75 MW, 2 MW, 3 MW and 4 MW of modulated power. Also got a comparison between D&E antennas and J antenna. Current scan: Got data at 1.2 MA, 1 MA, 0.8 MA and 0.6 MA. Had some trouble with CNPA noise at 0.6 and 0.8 MA Density scan: got data at nl_04= 1E20, the rest of the day was at 0.7E20. We also were able to get data on +90 vs. -90 J-Ant phasing at 5.6 Tesla and 5.4 Tesla. At the end of the run we were able to run another current scan, with 2 MW of ICRF power steady and 2 MW modulated. Had lots of runaways early in discharges, and some trouble with disruptions at the end of the day. |

| Machine generally ran well today. FMIT#2 was back on-line, and the rf also performed well providing 4 MW of modulated power for the MP. There were no startup field tweaks required today. The pre fill was changed only in an attempt to reduce runaways, not to improve startup, but changes in pre-fill and pg3 seg 1 puff produced no provable effect on the runaways. We had one fizzle today that may have been because of my reluctance to change the pre fill following disruption. No changes were required following the other disruptions (we had many). On shot 06 I changed ZCUR from -0.005 to 0.0 m to see if we could reduce W injections. This change seems to have worked.
As we lowered the plasma current, I programmed an overshoot, keeping the current rise approx constant during startup. This procedure seems to have improved our control of the target density. Disruptions sometimes as early as 150 ms were caused mostly maybe completely by injections. Early in the run, we had a few W injections. At least one disruption seemed to be caused by massive boron injections in which Matt saw very bright second order lines. Others were moly. Runaways seem to be becoming more difficult to suppress. Shot 21 had very few runaways and also a high startup density and ratiomatic pressure around 30 ms when the x-ray signal begins to rise. Note that the standard neuts_hards detector with a BGO scintillator and PMT detector saturated often during the run at approx 600 (units of 10^12/s). The solid state detectors which did not saturate ranged up to 10,000 on some shots. We should spend some time understanding this problem (more time). jim Problems: EF1 failed to commutate on shot 01 EF1 reached current limits on several shots today which may have contributed to disruptions at higher currents. Main gas valve did not work on shots 01 and 02 --- re-seat of board again worked. | After not being able to get signals from the 60 and 75GHz channels, Seung Gyou and I checked the power from the diodes and it was determined that both the 60GHz XMTR and 75 XMTR diodes have internal shorts. They are being sent for repair.
