Engineering setup for Wednesday 2010/03/03
MP521a- ITB formation - Ti and rotation profile effects

Overnight: standard boronization for 20% diborane, followed by the usual 2
hours of ECDC in helium and then 1 hour of ECDC in D2, along with a 60 C
bake
Run will start at 09:00 and end at 17:00.
Power systems as on 1100223005 (0.8 MA, 5.4 T, LSN)
A-coil configuration: +Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot; Enabled (standard
configuration)
Gas Setup:
fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4)
fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid enabled (PG1)
leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG2)
fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3)
leave NINJA as is DISABLED
Enable the following gate valves and shutters, assuming no vacuum problems:

Run plan: Start from 1100223005, which was an 0.8 MA, 5.4 T, LSN shot.
This shot had a ramp programmed into RXL, but I removed the ramp
and set RXL at an intermediate value (0.0125 m). I also removed
the slight ramp in ZXL, setting it at 0.0. I tweaked the nl_04
target to 1.0e20 m-2. (It was 0.9e20 m-2). And finally, I
decreased the prefill pulse duration to 24 ms because we will not
be using the cryopump. (We did use it on 1100223005.)
Run 5-10 shots to check out the J-port antenna at 70 MHz, and to
condition the RF after the overnight boronization. Then try for
ITBs using the off-axis ICRF (J-port at 70 MHz, Btor=5.4 T).
Once we get the ITB, we'll start reducing Btor in small steps,
expecting that the ITB will disappear until we get to about 3.9
T, which places the resonance on the inboard off-axis location.
We may use the 80 MHz (D+E) later in the day if we have problems
getting into H-mode, and to arrest the ITB with on-axis heating
at 5.4 T

The tokamak and J-port ICRF (at 70 MHz) worked pretty well today. Most
shots were full length discharges. We spent the first 9 shots doing
post-boronization recovery for the RF, and adjusting equilibrium parameters
until we started getting H-modes. Then we primarily varied Btor (5.4, 5.7,
4.5, 3.9 T) at constant Ip (0.8 MA) and mostly nl_04 (1.0e20 m-2), with
J-port delivering 2.5-3.0 MW fairly reliably from shot 10 onwards. A
number of these shots had EDA H-modes, but clear peaking was only seen on
shot 25, which had Ip=0.75 MA, Bt=4.0 T, nl_04=1.0e20 m-2, q95=3.5, LSN,
and Prf=2.7 MW from J (at 70 MHz). Towards the end of the day we did a
non-rotation (locked mode) discharge to calibrate HIREX.
One curious thing happened today. On shots 4-7 there were many magnetics
flux and Bp signals that reported having baseline offset problems. A close
examination revealed that the EF1L Rogowski indicated a couple hundred amps
of current lasting beyond t=4.0 s on those shots (and no other shots).
This exactly fits the flux patterns reconstructed from the affected
magnetics signals. However, the EF1L bus shunt didn't clearly show this
current. The problem went away when coincidentally the bus instrumentation
cabinet door was shut before shot 8. We can't explain the EF1L behavior.

the HIREX rotation measurements.
Next shot: reload shot 29 and try running it again, hopefully without an early disruption.

Shot 32 -- Plasma, full length. 0.75 MA, 3.8 T, 1.0e20 m-2, LSN. J-port faulted off very early,
but the plasma when into EDA H-mode and stayed in EDA H-mode. It even exhibited a bit
of peaking. The argon was disabled for this shot.
