| Rotation reversal experiments
Low density- Suggest- ECDC He to prepare walls for low density operation Continue #535 with #535a (previous experiments 108050201x) Take shape from1091216029/30- Most recent example (LSN- no direct Cryo effect available) Goal 1- Observe rotation reversal - take density to below 0.9e20 and density ramp- (stay at 5T) - When we get reversal, repeat 2x to get reproducibility - Can we go up through reversal and back down using cryo-pump- Should we try USN ? - repeat at 3T (keep qedge the same)- may need slightly lower Ne (0.7?) Goal 2- Can we do this with limited discharge - Move above config until CLEARLY limited- try to keep final shape the same - Try and get the density down- I assume wall interaction will be problematic - explore as above this configuration Goal 3- Transition limited-diverted - Ideally go from limited configuration with Ne below threshold-> diverted - If not, do the same with Ne above threshold - Try to take diverted below threshold and move onto limiter - If not, do the same with Ne above threshold Goal 4- q scaling - Take Goal 1 curve and repeat with qedge 3.5, 4, 5 (Ip scan c/f TCV results) ############# Wished for diags - CXRS (not available)- Pity- - Edge rotation measurements (really interesting for diverted/limited - X-ray sawteeth characteristics for all shots - MhD characteristics for all shots - All available bulk and edge turbulence measurements (long wavelength on PCI please) - bpd, CMOD control room, 3/16/2010 |

| Summary of day
The goal of today's experiments was to check the toroidal reversal with limited and diverted configurations and to attempt to move between the configurations to observe changes 1) Reversal obtained for diverted configurations again- Shown to be reproducible 2) Reversal not really seen for limited configuration- This is probably due to the problem in achieving a low plasma density (see below) 3) Change from Counter -> Co seen between Limited and diverted configurations 4) qscan 3,3.6,4,5 confirmed scaling with plasma current. Reversed transition observed at q=3.6 operated by allowing the plasma density to drop after the initial part of the discharge- 5) Other experiments in the run plan were not attempted due to a lack of run time and most of the above experiments were curtailed in an attempt to cover the main questions within the allotted time. Comments Main problem was achieving low densities- Over-low density early in discharge resulted in locked modes with negligible plasma rotation (as would be expected)- For diverted discharges we lost a LOT of the discharges with disruptions and/or locked modes- This was exacerbated by the changing machine conditioning that made it necessary to inject more prefill early in the discharges as the day progressed. Not only were many discharges lost due to these changes, but the increased early density required made the lower densities required by the limited configurations impossible and lower densities required by lower plasma current extremely tricky- From the diagnostic viewpoint, it was necessary to compensate for a low drift in the spectrometer (Ar-senior) by performing several dedicated locked mode discharges that again interrupted the "shot flow" Suggestions Clearly we have observed the desired effect but were not able to reproduce all the effects that would confirm this conclusion because of the time it would take to fine-tune the plasma density and breakdown scenarios. The Bphi scan or Ip scan question remains unanswered and a low density diverted configuration was not achieved- The absence of CX measurements mean that only the core rotation was measured (as known before the experiments but a pity in any case) means that the CMOD results fall quite a bit short of what could be possible on CMOD, but PCI data was taken. (This is not yet available on TCV and could answer some of the outstanding questions) In conclusion- All the data we finally obtained supports the previous conclusion that the toroidal velocity reversal shows all the signs of that reported from TCV- CMOD has the capacity to take this further with Bphi/IP scans and a wider range of edge diagnostics (but this would require CX measurements to obtain a complete rotation profile)- It would IMHO be extremely interesting to extend these measurements to provide further indications to the theoretical community on the parametric dependence of this effect- It would be useful to assess schemes to improve the machine conditioning and perhaps improve if possible the error field correction to avoid the early gas injection that made today's experiments so challenging. A BIG thank you to all the people around that made CMOD run smoothly and to the diagnosticians who have only just commenced their toil- _basil- |

| A combination of injections and low density locked modes caused a few early disruptions today. The early locked modes appeared around 400 ms when the density dropped dramatically. We spend a few shots filling in the "hole" using a large pg3 puff. The puff also cured the runaway problem Physop errors also lost us some shots (turning on wrong segment, not moving crowbar times, for example). When we started getting reliable plasmas we had to work to decrease the early density so that the planned density ramps could be done. Later in the run we spent several shots going from diverted to hard inner wall limited. Density rise from wall fueling was no issue after the first limited discharge. On shot 26 we went from hard limited to diverted at 0.8 s; an interesting discharge.
There were no power system problems today. We lost some data (Halpha, CIII) because of a CAMAC problem. fizzle 01,27 plasma 02-26, 28-33 |
