The objective of this experiment is to use the variable frequency reflectometry channel in the 135-140GHz range in conjunction with the 140GHz fixed frequency channel to study reflectometry correlation lengths at the internal foot of ITB plasmas. The cutoff density for this range is ne20=2.26-2.43, so the plan would require this density range to be within the edge pedestal of the plasma. The target ITBs would therefore have a density at the top of the H-Mode pedestal at ne20~2.1 using off-axis heating. If we're successful, we'll try adding on-axis heating during the shot.

We'll use a controlled locked mode shot in order to calibrate HIREX:
shot ~3: Use shot 1100316030 as HIREX Sr. velocity calibration.

In order to maximize ECE measurements (and to run a MC piggyback we're trying out with reflectometry) the first approach is to create ITBs with LFS heating with the 70MHz, this will require a B~5.6T.

Run plan:
Shots 1-10:
Using 1100316014 as the starting condition, try to create stable EDA H-modes using the 70MHz off-axis heating. The target density should be lowered slightly from 1x10^20m^-2 -> 0.8x10^20m^-2.
The current for the shot should be lowered to 700kA in order to help lower the current too (this should also help with the EDA formation)
One possible approach is to move SSEP to ~-3mm in order to utilize the cryopump, or to move to USN if necessary. The primary knob to change the density will be Ip.

Shots 11-20:
Hopefully, after the first ~10 shots, ITBs start forming.
If the density at the foot of the ITB is outside the range of the swept frequency (ne=1.84- 2.14x1020m-3), the baseline nl04 would be varied accordingly by varying the target nl04 and/or varying the current from shot to shot..

Shots 20-30:
If we have reliable ITB shots, we can use off axis heating using the 80MHz RF in order to have prolonged ITBs, these can be used to try to find evidence of TEM instability.

Last shot: repeat HIREX Sr. calibration

Once we get the ITB, we'll start reducing Btor in small steps, expecting that the ITB will disappear until we get to about 3.9 T, which places the resonance on the inboard off-axis location. We may use the 80 MHz (D) later in the day if we have problems getting into H-mode, and to arrest the ITB with on-axis heating at 5.4 T

Pretty successful day in terms of creating ITBs at relatively low densities.
The heating scheme used all day was to use the J port ICRF system at 70MHz
with a resonance at the LFS by having Bt= 5.5T - 5.6T.
The plasma went into H-mode by shot 2 and by 4 or 5 we had central peaking.
Shots 7 and 9 were great ITBs but after the TS recalibration on 1100323, it
was seen that the cutoffs for the correlation reflectometry system were at the
pedestal of the H-mode, far from the foot of the ITB.
For the rest of the day we had lots of H-modes but all with moderate peaking.
Then we retried the trophy shot at the end of the day and it reproduced the
desired ITB.

For future runs, an accurate TS calibration must be done before the run in order
to ensure correct positioning of the cutoffs.

Some good recipes for LFS off axis heated ITBs were found.

Run summary for Tuesday 2010/03/22 MP512 - Fluctuations at foot of low-density ITBs using frequency-scanned reflectometry Session leaders: A. Dominguez Physics operator: R. Granetz The tokamak systems and the ICRF ran very well today. Early in the run we obtained two extremely good ITB shots (007 and 009), but then things went downhill in terms of the density peaking factor. For the remainder of the run, we tried various tweaks (B-field, target density, plasma current, cryopump on/off, argon on/off, strikepoint location, ZCUR, etcetera), and although we obtained plenty of longish EDA H-modes, the peaking was modest. At the end of the day we reloaded shot 7, and we successfully reproduced the good ITB peaking on shot 29. So it's apparently not an issue with boronization wearing off. There was a delay in the middle of the afternoon to fix a problem with a Ross relay on the TF instrumentation. Scorecard: 28 plasmas 1 dud (no TF) 1 fizzle (I forget to compensate for turning off cryopump) 0 power supply tests 0 no-power MDS shot cycles -------------- Total: 30 shot cycles

the only thing we changed was the position of the X-point and it seemed to delay the L-H transition. It disrupted at ~1.5s due to an injection.

Next shot: Matt Reinke points out that the W tiles are getting warm, and he sees some tungsten injections. So I will move RXL out by 3 mm for the next shot.
