| Run Plan for MP 599 - Up/Down Poloidal Impurity Density Variation
SL: M. Reinke PO: W. Rowan The purpose of this run is to cover a wide parameter space in Ip, Bt and ne in Ohmic and ICRF L-mode plasmas to study parallel impurity transport. Density will be scanned during the shot in order to maximize the coverage. We will be looking for a sine term (up/down) in the impurity density on a flux surface. CRITICAL DIAGNOSTIS: HIREXSR, xtomo, bolometry, Thomson, GPC1,GPC2, FRCECE DESIRED DIGANOSTICS: XEUS, McPherson (Be-like Ar for absolute density), passive CXRS IF POSSIBLE: Lyman, scanning probes ECDC in He overnight to prepare for low-density shots Locked mode reference shot: 1100323023 cryopump required on first shot ICRF (D+E if possible) near the end of the day B-SIDE-LOWER filled with 2.0 psi Ar (use chopper to raise/lower) Load reference shot 1100226015 (5.4 T, USN, pumped, 1 MA, nl04=0.7) Ar puff from 0.4-1.2 chopped at 60% (adjust chopped fraction during the day) Fill NINJA with 35 psi D2 for possible fueling assistance at high density SHOT SEQUENCE: ============== 1) Test proper machine operation Bt=5.4, Ip=0.8, nl04=0.9 (steady) LOCKED MODE CALIBRATION 2) Set nl04 to scan from 1.2-0.6 from 0.7-1.4 seconds. At some point do a He puff to get branching ratio calibration at ~240 Angstroms to allow for absolute Ar calculation |

| Very rough run day despite it being nearly all Ohmic.

From the experimental side of things we were able to collect a range of fields (5.4, 4.0 and 2.7) and currents (1.0, 0.8, 0.6) at the MID and LOW density points in the MP. We ran up against a MARFE in extending the parameter space to high density and low current. Qualitative analysis showed the presence of the up/down asymmetry on XTOMO and HIREXSR and it could be seen to change during the density scans and shot-to-shot when the Ip and Bt were modified. This should be an excellent initial set of data to use in testing theories of parallel impurity transport. | Physics Operator Summary for Thursday, March 25, 2010, Run 1100325
This run consisted of Ohmic discharges with cryo pumping. The discharge was an USN (1100226015) for which toroidal field, plasma current, and density were varied. The planned range of discharges was extremely wide. The range of achievable discharges was limited by marfes and impurity injections. I wonder whether some of the marfing might have derived from the large argon injections. A very effective density scan employed the cryopump. A density scan was programmed from a relatively high value to a low one. Without the cryo pump this would likely not have worked. Unfortunately, in some cases, the high density demand led to a marfe and that prevented the remainder of the discharge from being useful. An alternative approach that might be tried is to start at a low density and scan up so that marfes would occur only after useful data was obtained over the available C-Mod range. There was an attempt to use the dcps_piezo_chopper. This was quickly set to 100% duty factor and left for the remainder of the day. There was one fizzle due to cryo otherwise the cryo ran well throughout the day. The run ended about 15 minutes early due to a blown fuse in OH2U. | Mar 25 2010 01:45:45:683PM | Matt Reinke | Early injection and possible locked mode disruption.
NEXT: repeat, hope that injection goes away | |
| Mar 25 2010 09:04:48:610AM | 1100325001 | Matt Reinke | Early disruption, two injections. First looks like Mo, second possibly low-z since the nl04 spikes. |
| Mar 25 2010 09:31:49:670AM | 1100325002 | Matt Reinke | Got the Mo injection again at startup, but this time it lived, only to be killed by a Ar puff that was too aggresive.
NEXT: reduce chopper to 30% |
| Mar 25 2010 09:32:53:560AM | 1100325003 | Matt Reinke | Shot locks early (sadly too early for Ar) and disruptions after 0.5 seconds.
NEXT: Repeat put Ip=0.8, nl04=0.9 |
| Mar 25 2010 09:50:22:707AM | 1100325004 | Matt Reinke | Got into rampdown but had a (Ar induced?) MARFE.
Ar brightness high on the upper channels of HIREXSR and XTOMO NEXT: Reduce B_SIDE_LOWER to 1 psi Ar and reapeat |
| Mar 25 2010 10:01:34:960AM | 1100325005 | Matt Reinke | Still got a MARFE at 1.1 seconds, but pre-MARFE Ar is 1/2 of 004 so impurities might not be causing it. Push through it, see if it's outgassing that will go away?
NEXT: Locked mode calibration shot (1100323023) |
| Mar 25 2010 10:16:34:640AM | 1100325006 | Matt Reinke | Good locked mode shot for HIREXSR. Looks like only a 5 km/s drift from previous calib.
NEXT: Reload shot 005, start density scan shots: nl04 from 1.2-0.6 from t=0.7-1.4 |
| Mar 25 2010 10:36:43:820AM | 1100325007 | Matt Reinke | Nasty MARFE. Wolfe says "DUH" at this current/density demand.
NEXT: set Ar to steady 0.3-0.45 puff, Ip=1.0 MA and repeat |
| Mar 25 2010 11:24:20:430AM | 1100325010 | Matt Reinke | Great density scan on this shot (1.0-0.6). Demand was 1.2, so it's running a bit low.
Can see some evolution of the asymmetry, appears to increase as nl04 decreases. NEXT: Try again at 0.8 MA, see if MARFE is still lurking. Set nl04 demand to 1.0-0.6 |
| Mar 25 2010 11:32:50:120AM | 1100325011 | Matt Reinke | Got a nl04 scan from 0.95-0.75 w/ a MARFE.
NEXT: nl04 from 0.8-0.4, same Ip/Bt |
| Mar 25 2010 11:45:35:517AM | 1100325012 | Matt Reinke | Good density scan (0.7-0.45)
NEXT: Lower Ip to 0.6 MA and repeat |
| Mar 25 2010 12:05:35:650PM | 1100325013 | Matt Reinke | Got a MARFE that really made the density evolution strange.
NEXT: repeat target w/ 1 MW ICRF from 0.5-1.5 and lower Ar to 100 ms puff |
| Mar 25 2010 12:37:38:313PM | 1100325015 | Matt Reinke | Good density ramp, but still got a MARFE despite RF
NEXT: Increase Ip to 0.8 MA, Decrease Bt to 4.0 T and turn off ICRF |

NEXT: Lower Bt to 2.7 T, change nl04 scan to be 0.6-0.4 |
| Mar 25 2010 02:13:57:837PM | 1100325021 | Matt Reinke | Good density scan (0.55-0.39). Also got a rotation reversal at 1.05
NEXT: Repeat locked mode shot (006). Enable helium for branching ratio calibration. Puff from 0.3-0.6 |
| Mar 25 2010 02:27:30:527PM | 1100325022 | Matt Reinke | Good locked mode shot. He seen on the He II visible monitor but not enough in the VUV spectrum. Will try it again in a few shots.
