We also need to verify the magnetics signals, including the new f25, although we won't be using that yet. If all of the above run successfully, then we will begin MP298a C-Mod Startup. Load PCS from prepared shot 1100625666 EO should load power system setup as on 1100326034 and gas setup as indicated above. Proceed to adjust startup to get a plasma, and if that succeeds then try to get another one. The last time we did this the mean-time-between-plasmas on the first day was >10 shots, but the second day we went 16 for 30. We'll see how it goes. |

Power system tests
and
MP#298a C-Mod Startup
The day got off to a bad start as the computer problems that have been
plaguing us all week continued. At least one server (alcserv1) had gone down,
and the web-server was also offline, It took several attempts to get logged in
and access files and software, but Tom and Josh managed to get most things
back up and running in time to start the run only a few minutes late.
The power system testing went quite smoothly, including the new feature of
testing the four-quadrant supplies using DPCS to double swing the current
rather than exercising the forward and reverse bridges under PLC control on
separate shots.
We also tested the gas valves Btop, Bmain, and H-bottom during
the morning power tests. The first two had been exercised yesterday, but
H-bottom had not been used since the last time its chopper board failed during
the Spring campaign. This valve is now connected directly to DPCS output_19,
and can be modulated using the dpcs_piezo_chopper routine if desired. The
direct drive signal was successfully tested on shot# 10.
The only problem encountered in testing was the EF4 supply, for which the
reverse bridge failed to produce significant current, either under DPCS or PLC
control. Troubleshooting this problem took almost two hours following
completion of all the other tests, but was eventually successful, and shot#22
was a successful reverse bridge EF4 test under PLC control.
Once all the supplies were tested, we moved on to plasma startup, under
MP#298a..Shot 23 was the first (and only) plasma attempt, and resulted in a
fizzle. Light was seen on the tv and on the wide 2 and GH limiter cameras,
though there was no signal on the Halpha, CIII, or Zmeter signals. JT
confirmed that there is a triggering problem with the Halpha and CIII, but the
lack of Zmeter is not understood; it possible that view is misaligned. This
should be investigated further on Monday.
The new dpcs_xjump routine intended
to abort the shot to a soft landing if excessive runaways were detected was
enabled for the shot, and did not produce a false positive, i.e. there was
no hard xray signal and the abort was not taken. We plan to require this
routine to be in use for all plasma attempts in this campaign, until further
notice, to ameliorate runaway damage to the limiters.
The field evolution following breakdown on the fizzle was very strange. Bz_0
failed to rise, and the EF3 current was driven down very fast. The RCUR, and
to some extent the other positional signals, had a lot of noise, at least
5000A-m peak-to-peak. This DPCS demands were thrashing between rails,
especially after the RCUR derivative gain switched in around 8msec. The
abnormal noise level was traced to a single partial flux loop signal, f14 on
DPCS input_024, and seems to be due to a bad isoamp, since the same signal
digitized downstairs in the magnetics cPCI crate is noise-free. Swapping
cables on DPCS test shots confirmed that the problem is with the input signal
rather than the DPCS digitizers.
After shot#23, we went into free access for half an hour or so, to allow a
visiting Senator to tour the facility. This didn't really cost us any time,
since it took a quite while to diagnose the problem with the control system
inputs. More costly in time was the fact that the physop workstation crashed
my login session just before the plasma attempt, and once I logged back in I
was unable to re-access the logbook for ten minutes or so. Since once the
diagnosis had been made, there remained insufficient time to fix or work
around the bad signal, we terminated the run at 16:15. There should be plenty
of time to fix and verify the isoamp on Monday.
All in all, a lot was accomplished, and we at least got a flash. Current rise
will have to wait until Tuesday.

| Jun 24 2010 03:29:10:590PM | Steve Wolfe | Getting set up for power tests for Friday. Bill wants to use DPCS to run double swing tests for the four-quadrant power supplies. We discussed this on Tuesday, and agreed to use a +/- 2kA waveform (1kA for EF4), starting at -1sec and ending at +1sec, similar to ef4 on 1090619024. I will need to set up wires for OH2U and OH2L In PCS, start by load from 1090619024, ack the magnetics warning. ZERO Seg01 wires 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 which have plasma quantities. Copy wire10 (OH2) to wire8 change name on wire 8 from IC_OH2 to IC_OH2U, change algorithm from CUSTOM to rogowski Change name on wire10 from IC_OH2 to IC_OH2L change algorithm from CUSTOM to rogowski Bring up ALL_P's screen Paste from IC_EF4U to IC_OH2U, and increase flattop values to -/+2kA Copy IC_OH2U into IC_OH1, IC_OH2L, IC_EF1U, IC_EF1L Extend gains on IC_OH2U, IC_OH1, IC_OH2L to ~1.5sec On IC_EF1U and IC_EF1L remove Igain around 0, and extend P gain at 5 to 2sec Note that the IC_EF4U is using the ROGOWSKI algorithm, so it only looks at the upper rogowski, not the average; I had forgotten about that. Do a build_all Save as 1100625000 in my scratch directory and to alcdata-test:/cmod/trees/test/pcs and dpcs_1100625000 Ready for power testing | |
| Jun 24 2010 04:06:35:407PM | Steve Wolfe | Setting up for startup plasma for Friday Load from 1100326034 (last shot in March) Seg2 is upper null, seg3 lower null, seg4 something with STRKPSI turned on. Active segment was seg2. Import seg2 from seg3 and make changes Reduce Ip from 1MA to 700kA Reduce nl04 from 8e19 to 6e19 Lower ZXL from .025 to .015 Increase TF current from -137300 to -150000 load dpcs_xjump and load_defaults Save as 1100625666 in my directory and alcdata-test Forgot to do the build. Build_all and resave, just in case Got a warning on wire 11 in seg2 using f15? It's an unused ssep wire. Zero it out rather than bothering with it, and rebuild. Now ZERO seg 3 and 4, just to be safe Now resave to pcs_scratch and alcdata-test That should be ready for plasma, if we get to it. | |
| Jun 24 2010 04:44:26:957PM | Steve Wolfe | Turns out I need to do some more playing for the power tests, to deal with the tests for EFC and the Acoils. Bring back 1100625000 ack the config warning The chopper voltage program looks ok, but the Acoil test should run like 1090619003, which has the dpcs_fizzle detector turned off and the usual programming for zcur3, I guess. Better look at it. That shot actually had a segment 2 turned on, although probably the hardware f.d. took it out at .08? I'll load wire2 and 3 from 1100326034. I'm not going to turn off dpcs_fizzle For the Acoil test on 1090619008 there is a trapezoidal waveform drawn on the seg01 ACOIL_CUR V signal. Copy that trace into my new seg01 from a second PCS. Now re-save as 1100625000 and remember to build_all and resave again to alcdata-test and pcs_scratch about to execute SAVE_AS. looking for.../home/wolfe/pcs_scratch/pcs_model NUM LONG = 3 copying /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch/pcs_model.tree to /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch/pcs_1100625000.tree copying /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch/pcs_model.characteristics to /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch/pcs_1100625000.characteristics copying /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch/pcs_model.datafile to /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch/pcs_1100625000.datafile looking for.../home/wolfe/pcs_scratch/dpcs_model NUM LONG = 3 copying /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch/dpcs_model.tree to /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch/dpcs_1100625000.tree copying /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch/dpcs_model.characteristics to /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch/dpcs_1100625000.characteristics copying /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch/dpcs_model.datafile to /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch/dpcs_1100625000.datafile Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done | |
| Jun 24 2010 07:34:51:970PM | Steve Wolfe | I need to correct the controllers for the IC_OH2U and IC_OH2L wires in the pcs_1100625000 setup. They presently each have both V_OH2U and V_OH2L entries, inherited from the previous wire which was the joint (average) IC_OH2 | |
| Jun 25 2010 08:08:07:140AM | Steve Wolfe | Setting up for Friday's runs. Computer systems are very sick. Web-logbook won't come up, neither will psfc home page I'm making entries through entry_display in IDL. Got PCS up from a terninal, since the menus are also broken. Load from 1100625000 Bring up wire 8, ic_oh2U, edit controller to remove coef on V_OH2L, apply Bring up wire 10, ic_OH2L, edit controller to remove coef on V_ON2U, ok Do a build, just to check Load into model Load at 25-Jun-2010 08:07:50.00 Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done | |
| Jun 25 2010 08:35:19:300AM | Steve Wolfe | According to Dave Arsenault, we did get ECDC last night after the LH crew finished, until 7:00AM. Still can't get to the web-based tools (signin, runs page) because www.psfc.mit.edu is not responding. Still no desktop icon or menu for C-Mod Operations, but I can access everuything I need from the command line. pcdaqdpcs3 is up and dpce seems to be running. I haven't taken a test shot yet. web-based logbook just came up | |
| Jun 25 2010 08:41:45:903AM | Steve Wolfe | Physop signin (found through an old link on my desktop) let me signin, but it did not register to the logbook. Still missing taskbar icons and menus, that may actually be just in my account, as mrl was trying to fix my earlier-reported problem. Search and lockup proceeding, looks like we may be ready to get started on schedule. | |
| Jun 25 2010 09:23:20:650AM | 1100625001 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#1: EFC test at 400V, also used to start cap bank conditioning Into INIT at 09:13 - Note no 13.8 on these TMX tests, so airswitch is open. dpcs init looks fine in logfile, 5.26sec in INIT Supply went, current trace on efc looks normal. Signals on bp coils and flux loops, not sure if they all are sensible, but no obvious errors. |
| Jun 25 2010 09:31:15:907AM | 1100625002 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#2: EFC test at 600V, EFC response looks ok, gets to ~800A Br_0 (mflux and recon_vac) get to ~.003T at .08sec Moving on to 3rd EFC test |
| Jun 25 2010 09:38:00:680AM | 1100625003 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#3: EFC test at 800V, No DPCS changes for this shot. EFC current to 1kA, looks normal. Cell access for Atma before the next test, which should be EF2U PLC control. |
| Jun 25 2010 09:55:32:977AM | 1100625004 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#4: EF2U PLC control test Enable B-top piezo, programmed for 27msec at -.5sec, 6psi D2 Notice that on shot#3 (probably earlier as well) the PLC plenum fill pressures are not being reported to MdsPlus, or at least they aren't showing up on my gas scope. EF2U -3000A, EF3 induced top +600A, got .067mTorr of gas at t=0 Mflux looks reasonable for EF2U Bz0 between -.026 and -.03T (vacbrbz and recon_vac) It looks like the new f25 loop is wired backward. It's reading +.015 while f26 is -.018 Next: EF2L, turn off B-top, enable B-main |
| Jun 25 2010 10:02:43:547AM | 1100625005 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#5: EF2L PLC control test turn off B-top, enable B-main Supply went, no obvious gas from B-main although there was a small output pulse. EF2L gave -3000A, 600A induced on EF3, smaller unbalanced induced currents on EF4U/L Next: Acoil test, leave B-main enabled with 60V pulse as programmed see if it frees up |
| Jun 25 2010 10:09:03:560AM | 1100625006 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#6: Acoil test, leave B-main enabled with 60V pulse as programmed see if it frees up Got some gas that time, to 0.5mTorr Got ~500A on Acoil, looks like it used to. Looks ok to me, small signals on lm diff coils and bp26 diff. Nest: EF3 test, leave B-main enabled just to exercise it a little more. |
| Jun 25 2010 10:24:08:810AM | 1100625007 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#7:EF3 test, PLC control (first of the alternator supplies) leave B-main enabled just to exercise it a little more; fd should kill it at 0.08 sec EF3 supply went, gas went 2000A on EF3, pressure to .025mTorr on ratiomatic. Mflux looks ok at the standard settings F25 is definitely backward |
| Jun 25 2010 10:39:53:733AM | 1100625008 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#8:EF4 double swing test, DPCS control Disable B-main. Programming for EF4 is based on 1090619024 Got no reverse swing on EF4. Demand is there, looks like f.d. is set correctly. No obvious programming fault, possible problem with reverse bridge. |
| Jun 25 2010 10:48:25:007AM | 1100625008 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#9:Repeat EF4 double swing test, DPCS control after cycling control cabinet power. Enable H-bottom; it has no program signal, for this test I want to confirm that it doesn't leak through with no demand. |
| Jun 25 2010 11:00:40:663AM | 1100625009 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#9:Repeat EF4 double swing test, DPCS control after cycling control cabinet power. Enable H-bottom; it has no program signal, for this test I want to confirm that it doesn't leak through with no demand. Critical init failure on TMX J221 init action, proceed with EF4 test anyway Still no reverse swing on ef4 Lots of mag errors partials and bp loops with no finite signal, but that doesn't seem to be true; must just be below threshold. Gas looks ok, i.e. no gas. Next: try a PLC reverse bridge test on EF4 |
| Jun 25 2010 11:06:34:087AM | 1100625010 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#10:try a PLC reverse bridge test on EF4 Leave H-bottom enabled, I'll load a waveform before the next double swing test. This shot will pulse at -1.1, have f.d. back at 0.08sec No current from EF4, seems to be a problem with the reverse bridge. Next: move on to EF1U double swing test, turn on H-bottom waveform |
| Jun 25 2010 11:19:33:730AM | 1100625011 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#11:move on to EF1U double swing test, turn on H-bottom waveform Waveform between .286 and .548sec on H-bottom, max value ~85V. Load at 25-Jun-2010 11:08:36.00 Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Got a good double swing, also got some gas up to 0.4mTorr timing looks reasonable. Run it again next time, just for exercise, but I think it's ready to use. Next: EF1L double swing |
| Jun 25 2010 11:25:13:753AM | 1100625012 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#12: EF1L double swing, same H-bottom gas program as on 11 Good EF1L double swing, got .4mTorr on H-bottom. Next: Move on to OH1 double swing test Disable H-bottom |
| Jun 25 2010 11:32:43:090AM | 1100625013 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#13: Move on to OH1 double swing test Disable H-bottom. Got a good double swing, although the horn was short. Next: OH2U double swing test |
| Jun 25 2010 11:44:38:750AM | 1100625014 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#14:OH2U double swing test Got a double swing, but reverse swing doesn't look flat, has some oscillation. I think maybe the gain is a little too high. I think the supply is responding ok, feedback is just a little unstable. Next: OH2L double swing test, no PCS changes |
| Jun 25 2010 11:52:32:647AM | 1100625015 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#15: OH2L double swing test, no PCS changes Nicer double swing pulse on oh2l, gives less oscillation with the same gain setting. I think this indicates that the oh2u supply may be a little flakey on voltage response. May need to examine the waveforms on #14 more closely, or wait till we're trying for plasma. Next: EF1 commutation test, PLC control |
| Jun 25 2010 11:58:53:413AM | 1100625016 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#16: EF1U/L commutation test, PLC control 2kA commutation test looks ok. Next: OH1,OH2U/L commutation test, PLC control |
| Jun 25 2010 12:10:48:280PM | 1100625017 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#17: OH1,OH2U/L commutation test, PLC control Good commutation on all three supplies, 10kA I am seeing what may be an acceptable response on F14, input_024 at DPCS. However, it ought to look like F13 inverted, and it doesn't. Could be more noise, could be broken. |
| Jun 25 2010 12:17:23:610PM | 1100625018 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#18: TF 50kA test Looks good. Next: 100kA TF test |
| Jun 25 2010 12:21:45:833PM | 1100625018 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#18: TF 50kA test Looks good. Next: 100kA TF test We will be waiting 10 minutes between TF tests |
| Jun 25 2010 12:29:24:367PM | 1100625019 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#19: TF 100kA test Good TF test, -3.5T on btor. Next: 150kA TF test |
| Jun 25 2010 12:48:09:000PM | 1100625020 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#20: TF 150kA test TF test looks good, 5.3T btor Next: retry PLC reverse bridge test |
| Jun 25 2010 01:58:04:853PM | 1100625021 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#21: retry PLC reverse bridge test Bill reseated a board in the control cabinet before shot#20, which has been known to fix this problem in the past. No ef4 current. Still broken. Time for Bill to work some magic. It's not quite true that there was no current, there seems to be of order 10amps, enough to make about 1mT of Bz. There is definitely voltage on the bus, oscillating about 200Vp-p. Bill thinks that the PLC current limit is not getting through to the supply. |
| Jun 25 2010 02:50:57:620PM | 1100625022 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#22: retry PLC reverse bridge test again after Bill swaps some chips and reseats another board. If this doesn't work, we will try for plasma anyway, since we should be able to get a few hundred msec without needing to double swing the EF4 got current in EF4 reverse bridge, it's fixed. Next shot: Try for plasma |
| Jun 25 2010 03:09:24:383PM | 1100625023 | Jim Irby | Reporting for Steve:
First plasma attempt. fizzle --- 0.03e20/m^2 density, no current |
| Jun 25 2010 03:25:49:997PM | 1100625023 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#23: first plasma attempt Saw light on the TV, no halpha or CIII or Zmeter signals Wide 2 has light as well, there is a small amount of density no current. Fields look very strange, My login sesson on cmodws50 blew away just before init logging back in I was locked out of logbook Bringing scopes back up trying to see what's going on. Currents look reasonable, except Bz never rises |
| Jun 25 2010 03:36:22:413PM | 1100625023 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#24: We are having a visit from a senator from Delaware, so we are in free access for the moment Plenty of time to figure out what to do next. |
| Jun 25 2010 04:07:00:943PM | 1100625023 | Steve Wolfe | Take a dpcs test shot, see if the outputs are sensible. I don't understand the demands, particularly on ef3 on shot#23 fizzle, and I'm very suspicious that the dpcs_fizzle isn't working correctly, though that's not the issue. There is noise on the phys_aout signals that is large compared to last year, as on rcur I'm seeing high frequency noise at over 5000A-m peak to peak, and it used to be lt 500A-m. I believe this is coming from the excess noise I observed earlier on F14 (input_024) which is around 7mT on a partial! This noise is not present on the magnetics signals, so it is either from the isoamp or from the digitizer. |
| Jun 25 2010 06:29:24:453PM | 1100625023 | Steve Wolfe | Due to insufficient time to repair and test the iso-amp on input_024 of the control system, which seems to have been at least parially responsible for the bad field evolution on shot#23, today's run has been terminated. MP#298a will be continued on Tuesday. |
