| Session leader plan for 1100707
Session Leader: G. Wallace Physics Operator: J. Irby MP: 605 LH2 Lower Hybrid Launcher Checkout and Conditioning LH Setup: Launcher 1.0 mm behind limiter; 90 degree current-drive phasing; 600+ kW net power; LH on from 0.7 to 1.2s. Reference shot: 1100701032 Shot Plan: Begin with reliable discharge from last week. Set klystrons to 100 kW with ramp from 50 kW at beginning of pulse. (Set klystrons 4, 5, 6, 7 to half power.) Pulse timing from 0.7 to 1.2 s. 90 deg current drive phasing. After reliable discharges are established, turn on cryopump for density control. Desired nl04=4.5e19. Raise LH power in ~10 kW/klystron steps (0.5 s pulse length) to 600 kW, then increase in 50 kW steps to maximum power without arcing. If arcing occurs, reduce power level by 50% and proceed upward in power as before. If source power is exhausted on one klystron, continue to increase power on other klystron channels. The following is the peak calibrated klystron power at 50 kV, as measured at the IDC: A1V1 195 kW A1V2 200 kW A1V3 177 kW A1V4 208 kW A2V1 234 kW A2V2 199 kW A2V3 181 kW A2V4 234 kW A3V1 199 kW A3V2 209 kW Total: 2036 kW |

| Late start today due to computer problems. First plasma at 10:30. Total of 22 shots.
Early LH shots showed sudden jump in forward power on klystron 7 which caused nuisance trips on klystron 6. Problem was fixed by replacing SFOL board for klystron 7. Interestingly, replacing SFOL caused 180 degree phase shift on vector modulator, just as with replacement of klystron 8 SFOL. Looks like it might be due to replacement of an inverting buffer with a non-inverting buffer on the board or vice versa. A bug was encountered with respect to the phase offset adjustment subroutine of the setpoints generator. Offset adjustment only works once when generator is first opened, then does not update values after that. Need to look into this on off days. After getting the SFOL fixed, we tried to lower reflection coefficients by changing outer gap and using cryopump. Best coupling results were on shot 18 with 1.5cm outer gap and nl04~6e19 during lh (5.75e19 before lh). Minimum reflection coefficient of about 22% at 70 degree phasing. Phase scan on shot 9 confirmed proper phasing from WG probes. Will need to look into the reflection problem more during dedicated MP following all WG probe calibrations next week. No signs of arcs but did not try for > 400 kW net power. One hot spot seen on septum between 16B and dummy column at small outer gap ~0.8 cm. Did not appear to cause any damage to the launcher. Also, there was a flash in the B side D row dummy column just after LH turn on time on shot 21. No signatures of this were seen on waveguide probes or directional couplers. Optical protection system also showed no anomaly. |

| We continued the LH conditioning MP starting from 1100701032 from last
Thursday. The machine was much cleaner, and we had no problems getting the density down to 4e19/m^2 w/o the cryopump (at least early in the day). Later in the day comparisons were made with and w/o the pump. Scans of the outer gap were performed to see effects on coupling. We started out with some moderate levels of hards on the first few shots. Increasing the pg3 seg 1 puff (start time more negative) seems to have fixed the problem. Later in the day the hards returned on a couple of discharges and an additional 1 ms of gas eliminated them again. So pg3 gas starting around -20 ms seems to be a good tool for controlling the hards. Problems: . We spent much of the morning fixing data system and PLC problems . EF2 supply misbehaved again --- cleaned some contacts . It took a couple of tries to get the cryopump running again with PLC and LN2 vacuum shield issues. We did have several successful shots with the cryopump, but PLC problems returned at the end of the run. |

| Jul 7 2010 10:51:25:200AM | 1100707004 | Greg Wallace | All trips. Density much lower than last run---got what we asked for 4e19. Density at probes was lower as well, around 5e17. Will increase density program to 5e19 for next shot and also increased trip levels on RINT/FINT to 45% on all direct feed columns (cause of the trips). |
| Jul 7 2010 11:14:00:703AM | 1100707005 | Greg Wallace | Better this time, but still many trips. All trips on klystron 6 IDC ratio. Sudden increase in reflection coefficient on klystron 6 seems to be caused by sudden jump in forward power on klystron 7. Number 7 SFOL receive monitor hooked up. I-> board 234-8, Q -> board 234-7. Monitor had been connected to board 8 for shot 5 and previous. |
| Jul 7 2010 11:41:15:900AM | 1100707006 | Greg Wallace | Better but still 3 faults near end of shot. Looks like sudden increase on klystron 7 forward power again caused ratio fault on klystron 6. Reflection coefficient 30-35%. Density on LH probes around 1e18. Will repeat on next shot to see if we can figure out what's going on with klystron 7. |
| Jul 7 2010 11:49:27:183AM | 1100707007 | Greg Wallace | Disruption at .34 s. |
| Jul 7 2010 12:10:22:897PM | 1100707008 | Greg Wallace | 3 trips, again caused by increase in forward power on klystron 7. Ratio on klystron 6 was cause of fault. Next shot will move onto phase scan. |
| Jul 7 2010 12:28:38:290PM | 1100707009 | Greg Wallace | Phase scan from 60-150 degrees. Phases from 70-100 degrees went through, trips at 60 and 110+ degrees. SFOL board is being swapped out for next shot. Will go to 70 degrees for next shot. |
| Jul 7 2010 01:08:58:630PM | 1100707010 | Greg Wallace | More trips at 70 degrees with new SFOL board on klystron 7. Reflected power on klystron 6 at 100%. Problem looks to be due to new SFOL which changed phase on klystron 7 by 180 degrees. (Signs of I and Q both reversed?) Adjusting phase offset on test shots to verify correct phasing before shot 11. |
| Jul 7 2010 01:56:38:830PM | 1100707011 | Greg Wallace | Clean shot at 70 deg phasing. Phase of klystron 7 is back where it should be. Will decrease outer gap for next shot to 1.0cm to decrease refco. |
| Jul 7 2010 02:04:32:297PM | 1100707012 | Greg Wallace | Good shot. Clean LH with outer gap around 1.1cm. Refco starts a bit high then decreases to 25% after 100ms. Next shot will decrease outer gap to 0.8cm to see if coupling gets better. |
| Jul 7 2010 02:13:56:193PM | 1100707013 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle. |
| Jul 7 2010 02:37:08:553PM | 1100707014 | Greg Wallace | Another clean shot with 0.8cm outer gap. Reflections a little higher, around 30% this time. Small hot spot on septum between 16 and dummy column on row B during LH. Does not look like enough to have melted the weld. Will move on to 2.0cm outer gap for next shot. |
| Jul 7 2010 02:44:51:623PM | 1100707015 | Greg Wallace | Good shot with 2cm outer gap. Refco increases from 20-30% as density rises. Will turn on cryopump for next shot to try to control the density. |
| Jul 7 2010 03:08:14:903PM | 1100707016 | Greg Wallace | Another clean shot. Cryopump did not operate on this shot and as a result it was almost identical to shot 15. Shot 17 should have cryopump. |
| Jul 7 2010 03:54:38:757PM | 1100707017 | Greg Wallace | Clean LH for this shot with gap of 2cm. Will decrease outer gap to 1.5 cm with cryopump for next shot. |
| Jul 7 2010 04:07:35:683PM | 1100707018 | Greg Wallace | Reflections a little lower (20-25%) at 1.5 cm outer gap with cryo. Moving to 1.0 cm outer gap for shot 19. |
| Jul 7 2010 04:19:11:220PM | 1100707019 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle. |
| Jul 7 2010 04:40:46:400PM | 1100707020 | Greg Wallace | Refco a little higher with 1cm outer gap (25-29%). Will keep same conditions except reduce requested density from 5e19 to 4e19 for next shot. |
| Jul 7 2010 04:52:16:710PM | 1100707021 | Greg Wallace | Clean shot, reflections decreasing from 28-26% during pulse. Probe density around 1.5e18 during lh. Moving back to 1.5cm outer gap for next shot. |
| Jul 7 2010 05:17:36:900PM | 1100707022 | Greg Wallace | Density a bit lower before LH turn on (4.5e19 on nl04), increased to 5.75e19 during LH. Most HXR and ECE today due to low density. Last shot of the day. |
