| MP534: Foil/AXUV Bolometer Calibration in Helium
The purpose of this run is to calibrate the bolometry, Lyman-a and the HIREXSR diagnostics. Helium is used as the main-ion to reduce C-X contributions on the foil bolometry and check the filter transmission of the Lyman-a tools. ICRF conditioning will also be piggybacking as we try to bring up the PTOT for the first time this campaign and the He main-ion helps to eliminate trips due to high neutral pressure. SETUP: ------- ECDC in He the night before. Main ion fueling will be He but use D2 for reliable startup. Fill B-SIDE-LOWER with 1 psi Ar. TO-DO: ------- 1) ISOTOPE CHANGEOVER (5-10 shots) Run the isotope changever shots in LSN, repeating 1100709023 (800 kA, nl04=1.0 ZSEPS sweep w/ cryopump) and let ICRF condition D/E/J as necessary but keep PINPUT <= 1-2 MW, starting low and checking heat flux diagnostics before increasing. Enable 100 ms Ar puff for HIREXSR to adjust crystal alignment (no masks) Monitor D_a, Ly_a on midplane to verify isotope exchange. 2) DIVERTOR LYMAN-A CHECK (2-3 shots) After isotope changever satisfactory, run Ohmic only to test isotope effect on heat flux and check Lyman-a divertor filter throughput. Set Ar to 50 ms puff. Repeat Ohmic shot at lower density (1100709019) w/ nl04 ~ 0.7 3) OUTER GAP SCAN (2-3 shots) after HIREXSR alignned run outer gap scan plasmas like 1100205013 (Ohmic only w/ Ip scan and no cryopump) 4) AXUV/FOIL BOLOMETER CALIBRATION (6-7 shots) Switch to 1100205007 (1 MA, nl04=0.9, USN, 1-2 psi Ar steady 0.3-1.2,use cryopump w/ 2-3 MW of ICRF (D+E only), ICRF during rampdown). Once Ar-seeded dischrage is repeatable, do HIREXSR masking tests (4-5 shots) Adjust Ar pressure/duty cycle and ICRF as necessary to try and get close to 100% PRAD. 5) ICRF PTOT CONDITIONING (rest of day) Adjust ICRF D/E/J mix and impurity seeding as necessary for conditioning and run more shots. Increase PINPUT to maximum available, keeping an eye PRAD and LIMITER/DIVERTOR temperatures. |

| A typical Tuesday of a run. We got a late (~30 minutes) due to an alternator problem. We struggled with density control early but lowering the target to about 25% below desired seemed to work.
We were able to get all three ANT separately to have ~ 1 MW, 300 ms pulses. Tried D and E at 1.5 MW but wasn't able to get a steady pulse. Also D+E overlap caused problems, possibly releasing material from the lower C-SIDE of the D-ANT. We weren't able to get the ICRF at the level to work on (4) or (5). We then switched to Ohmic to exploit the isotope changeover (1) and so we completed (2) from the SL_PLAN. The last few shots had poor startups with runaways and 034 was shut down by DPCS and showed no energy flux to the LFS limiters. Compared to 032 which would have been shut down by DPCS but died prior to 0.1 seconds and did show energy flux on K-LIM. 1-3 : cycle tests 4-27 : ICRF conditioning (4-16 at 5.5 T and 17-27 at 6.0 for MC tests) 28-34 : were Ohmic comparisons from 1100709 to test divertor Lyman-a filters |

| We had many fizzles today, and several 800 kA distruptions, as we tried
to condition the rf antennas. We started up from 1100709023 and varied very little except the density programming all day. Following shot 31, which was an unexplained fizzle, discharges 32, 33, and 34 all had large hard x-ray levels. Shot 34, which lasted 200 ms, was shutdown by the DPCS because of these high levels. Shot 32 actually had periods of time in which all the SSD hard x-ray detectors saturated (5e-6, and 5e-7 A). Shot 30, which ran full length, did have multiple injections, but not major ones. After shot 30 we did not have a good plasma. I added more and more prefill w/o success. I did not try increasing the pg3 seg 1 puff, which might have been a better thing to do. The neutral pressure at breakdown by shot 34 was higher than on shot 30, but the early density refused to rise. On shots 01, 02, and 03 we ran cycle tests to exercise pg3 before the run. We confirmed that the main gas puff does not work well on the first shot of the day (or run week). Problems: Data system critical init failure resulted in one no power shot (shot 23, ef4 camac issue). Cryopump dump resulted in one of the fizzles (24) Hards on shot 32, 33, 34. Score: gas test 01,02,03 no power 23 fizzles 5,8,15,19,21,24,28,31 plasma 4,6,7,9,10,11,12,13,14,16, 17,18,20,22,25,26,27,29,30, 32,33,34 |

| Jul 13 2010 09:36:40:403AM | 1100713004 | Matt Reinke | Large MARFE (caused by Ar puff?) raises density to an absurd level.
NEXT: repeat w/ 50 ms Ar puff |
| Jul 13 2010 10:14:34:590AM | 1100713006 | Matt Reinke | Full length shot. Still getting signal on the LYMAN system. D,E OK, J looks ratty. Continue with isotope changeover and conitioning....to He not to hydrocarbon main-ion plasmas, though.
NEXT: Repeat |
| Jul 13 2010 10:29:08:360AM | 1100713007 | Matt Reinke | Another early disruption. Loose density control after t~0.7. Get Fe and Mo from ICRF+MSE heat shield.
NEXT: drop Ar back to 50 ms |
| Jul 13 2010 10:51:16:917AM | 1100713009 | Matt Reinke | Another early disruption, density control can't be maintained.
NEXT: Lower target to nl04~0.7 to try and lose the MARFE. |
| Jul 13 2010 11:10:53:507AM | 1100713010 | Matt Reinke | Large Mo injection just after 0.43 and see a spray on the WIDE2 and D-ANT camera that's around the D-ANT limiter. |
| Jul 13 2010 11:30:37:090AM | 1100713011 | Matt Reinke | A full length shot!!!. Density higher than demand but actually closer to what I want (nl04~0.95). Decent D+E, J still icky.
NEXT: Repeat, add IMPINJ (CaF2) test in the rampdown 1.55. Increase D and E to 1.5 MW |
| Jul 13 2010 11:53:14:537AM | 1100713012 | Matt Reinke | D+E ratty at 1.5 MW, J-ANT looking better. No large change in the limiter energy fluxes.
NEXT: Repeat to get ANT conditioning. |
| Jul 13 2010 12:06:07:037PM | 1100713013 | Matt Reinke | Clean J-ANT pulse at 1 MW total, D+E still tripping at 1.5 MW. The density actually stays controlled on this one and reaches the actual target of nl04~0.7
NEXT: Assume (naively?) that density control will be maintained and raise target to nl04=0.9. Repeat w/ J-ANT at 1.5 MW total. |
| Jul 13 2010 12:18:52:130PM | 1100713014 | Matt Reinke | Mo comes in after 0.6 and helps to lead to the disruption.
NEXT: Repeat w/ ICRF mix/balance changed. Overlapping D+E at 1 MW each for short period of time. |
| Jul 13 2010 12:47:08:640PM | 1100713016 | Matt Reinke | still chasing ANT conditioning. Got a large spray from D-ANT after 1.0 seconds that help euthanize the plasma.
NEXT: Raise BT to 6.0 to get data on the MC for PCI and continue ANT de-shitting (Wukitch's wording) |
| Jul 13 2010 01:00:53:517PM | 1100713017 | Matt Reinke | Full length plasma, but bad ICRF.
NEXT: Repeat |
| Jul 13 2010 01:22:50:877PM | 1100713018 | Matt Reinke | Early disruption, looks like a low-Z injection, nl04 target creeping up again.
NEXT: Repeat w/ nl04 target at 0.7 |
| Jul 13 2010 01:51:38:850PM | 1100713020 | Matt Reinke | Substantial impurities from 0.6-1.1. Cu, Fe Ni and perhaps Cr
NEXT: Repeat w/ ICRF adjustments |
| Jul 13 2010 02:14:25:237PM | 1100713022 | Matt Reinke | D-ANT had a clean pulse but E and J had multiple trips. Cleaner, full length plasma.
NEXT: Repeat |
| Jul 13 2010 03:00:12:053PM | 1100713025 | Matt Reinke | Lots of Fe, Ni and Cu impurity injections. See blow off from D-ANT Faraday screen after 0.8 seconds.
G/H limiter lights up/sparks during E-ANT and J-ANT pulses. No significant heat flux on thermocouples, though so likely just heat thermally disconnected layers of B and blowing them off the limiter. NEXT: Repeat |
| Jul 13 2010 03:15:58:533PM | 1100713026 | Matt Reinke | Similar ratty RF. Steve suggests D/E interaction.
NEXT: Repeat w/o ICRF overlap |
| Jul 13 2010 03:23:08:277PM | 1100713027 | Matt Reinke | Shot looked good until Mo injection at 0.875 |
| Jul 13 2010 03:36:40:227PM | 1100713028 | Matt Reinke | Fizzle.
NEXT: Switch to Ohmic only for divertor Lyman-a and heat flux check. Repeat 011 w/o ICRF. |
| Jul 13 2010 03:53:28:927PM | 1100713029 | Matt Reinke | Good shot as a match for 1100709023. Density up near nl04~1.0 despite a demand of 0.7.
NEXT: Reduce nl04 demand = 0.6 and repeat shot. Brian's going to add probes. |
| Jul 13 2010 04:05:35:007PM | 1100713030 | Matt Reinke | Another good Ohmic shot, w/ nl04 down to 0.8.
NEXT: Repeat w/ nl04=0.5 |
| Jul 13 2010 04:41:10:773PM | 1100713032 | Matt Reinke | Fizzle/early runaway shot. Steve says it would have tripped DPCS but it only lasted till 0.06 seconds. The K-LIM sees the energy rise but after adjusting for the deposition time (0.01 seconds) it's still about 1/4 of the melting energy flux.
NEXT: Repeat sans runaways |
| Jul 13 2010 05:14:08:570PM | 1100713034 | Matt Reinke | Early shutdown due to neuts/hards. This one showed no energy flux to the LFS limiters in contrast to 032 which had finite flux. Could be chance, but otherwise a successful test of the machine protection system. |
