| Run Plan for 1100716
MP#570 - Boundary layer heat transport experiments in L-mode plasmas Goal We will continue with doing run#1 in Table 1 of MP#570 - LSN, ohmic L-mode plasmas, 5.4 tesla, 0.8 and 0.54 MA, density scans. Reviewing the A-port scanning probe data that we gathered from the last attempt (1100709), the profiles look to be pretty ratty, even on shot#9 when we thought the ASP had cleaned up enough. In addition, because of some problems with the pneumatic drive, only the first scan of three (if any) got deep enough to resolve the shear layer. During this week's maintenance, we added a new air ballast to the ASP pneumatics and changed a faulty 4-way solenoid valve. These fixes should make the probe scans more reproducible. We will therefore redo the low density shots as the initial probe targeting sequence with the idea of getting a second chance for better ASP data. But then we must then move on to the higher density data points without delay, regardless. To help expedite, one density point has now been dropped in the density scan sequence. Setup NINJA should be filled to 8 PSI D2 for GPI. Program gas to hit plasma at 1.2 s. Reload shot#1100709019 with request for NL04 ~ 0.5. This shot had all the gaps tuned up nicely, including a ramp of the outer gap to close in on the feeble ASP. We will adjust this outer gap programming as needed to account for the changes to the ASP pneumatics. Set ASP, FSP and WASP scanning probes to fire at 0.8, 1.0 and 1.2 seconds Argon will be enabled for HIREX data at the same puff parameters as on 1100709. Cryopump with be used from the start. No ICRF or LHRF. We will also take a locked mode calibration shot (reload 1100323023), around about 11:00 am when the cell temperature has stabilized. A. LSN, 5.4 tesla, 0.8 MA NL04~ 0.5, 0.7, 0.9, 1.1, 1.3, 1.5e20 Two shots at each density, probes scanning to resolve shear layer. B. LSN, 5.4 tesla, 0.54 MA Use Steve Wolfe's cross-over glitch controller to mitigate jogs in outer boundary shape. NL04~ 0.34, 0.47, 0.6, 0.74, 0.88, 1.0e20 Two shots at each density, probes scanning to resolve shear layer. |

We won't need cryopump for this test. Start from seg2 from 1100709019, 800kA, 5.4T, nl04=0.5e20 with swept strike and x-point as tuned up last Friday. Per conversation with SL, I will change the field from 5.5 to 5.4T. After the first shot, Brian will ask for changes to the targeting based on his changes to the ASP plenum which is supposed to allow the probe plunge depths to be more equal. It might save time if I just programmed a flatter rcur to begin with, but it's his probe. Use startup from Friday with the cryopump on, starting with rcur offset=2500 or 2000. I'll try chasing the offset to keep up with the BT pickup effect on the partials during the run. A. Scan nl04 from 0.5 to 1.5e20, in steps of 0.2e20, taking 2shots per density NINJA will be puffing, at least for the higher density cases. ?. At some point around 11:00AM, we will reload 1100323023 segment 4 to give the HIREX guys a locked mode calibration shot. This needs(?) to be done after the cell temp has stabilized, but preferably before we get too far along in the density scan. B. Decrease Ip to 540ka, turn on dpcs oh1_crossover routine to ameliorate crossover glitch. Scan nl04 from 0.34 to 1.0e20, as per SL plan, again at 2 shots per density. Not clear we can get back to the lowest density right away, but will probably pick up intermediate points on the way. |

| Run Summary for 1100716
MP#570 -- "Boundary layer heat transport experiments in L-mode plasmas" Mission accomplished today. We completed the 0.8 MA and 0.54 MA ohmic L-mode density scans, as outlined in the MP, although divertor detachment and associated MARFE phenomena restricted the upper range in plasma densities that could be explored. The scanning probes (ASP, FSP, WASP) worked quite well, despite some panic Thursday afternoon (i.e., BBQ time) when it was discovered that the recent 'fix' for the leaky 4-way valve on the ASP had actually rendered the probe inoperable. As a result, a hot soldering iron had to take the place of a BBQ dinner for the session leader, as a bad trunk cable needed to be debugged and fixed on the ASP drive system in time for the run. GPI was operated all day, with Jim Terry reporting that the images were of good quality. The IR camera was also operated all day. However, a number of software issues (including incorrect definitions for various 'regions of interest' for the new ramped-tile geometry) prevented the system from being run in a between-shot automatic mode. These and other issues remain to be addressed, even now after the run. Anyway, the IR data will need to be post-processed before we can assess the quality. Jerry Hughes reported that the edge Thomson system was up and running, with some optimization of the laser alignment done during the run. Shot#2 was the first plasma attempt, revisiting the low density data point at 0.8 MA with the same outer divertor strike point sweep that was set up during the 1100709 run. We kept this programming in place all day, sweeping from the bottom of the vertical tile face to beyond the 'nose' of the outer divertor. In this way, we could use a few discrete Langmuir probes and surface TCs to map out the full 'footprint' on the outer divertor. The large amplitude of the sweep (i.e., going fully up beyond the 'nose') turned out to be especially important as divertor detachment was approached. As expected, pressure loss and detachment were more pronounced when the strike point was on the vertical face compared to the nose; the sweep allowed a direct comparison of this effect of vertical vs. horizontal plate geometry in the same discharge. Shot#3 was a repeat of #2 with probes targeted to the separatrix. Shot#4 was a lock-mode shot for Matt Reinke to calibrate HIREXSR. Then we proceeded to march up in density, taking 2 or 3 shots at the same density to optimize scanning probe depths. At NL04 around 1.2 (shot#14, 15) the density did not remain steady in time, reflecting some time-dependent changes in divertor detachment. We did not push the density up beyond this point. Shot#16 was the first shot at 0.55 MA with NL04~0.3. Despite our worries about wall loading, the discharge showed no problem in jumping right down to this density value, possibly the result of using the cryopump all day. By now the scanning probes were giving their best data yet -- very few 'arcs', mapping out clean Te & Ne profiles and producing clean parallel flow and phase velocity profiles across the shear layer. Shot#17 to 25 (minus the fizzle on shot#21) was another march up in density. Again, divertor detachment and uncontrolled MARFEs limited the upper density that we could explore at this current, NL04~ 0.85. Shot#26 and 27 were use to fill-in some lower density data points at 0.54 MA: a more stable density shot at NL04 ~ 0.64 and a new density data point at NL04 ~ 0.42. Dan Brunner kept a close eye today on the divertor heat flux profiles as mapped by the Langmuir probes and surface thermocouples. Some systematic trends were noted: e-folding widths in attached plasmas increase as the density is raised (0.54 and 0.8 MA) and decrease as the current is raised for the same Greenwald fraction. These trends are qualitatively in-line with previous scaling observations for the midplane electron pressure profiles. So it looks like this run generated some very nice data to chew on. We are looking forward to attacking the 1.1 MA portion of this MP with our new diagnostic tools. Tune in again next Wednesday. Physics Operator Summary for Friday, Jul 16, 2010
MP#570
SL: Labombard
PO: wolfe
EO:Pierson, Pfeiffer, Fitzgerald
Pretty good run, completing most of the run plan with minimal
glitches. We got density scans at 800kA and 540kA from the lowest
values requested up to the detachment density, which turned out
to set in lower than the upper density values called for in the
SL_PLAN at both currents.
The major operational problem today was cooling. Using the normal
cooling rates (pump at 7psi) we were overcooling the vessel, threatening
to cause vacuum leaks. The EO's experimented with modified cooling
protocols, managing to keep the vessel above 22C but forcing RECOOL
times up to 20minutes, which reduced the number of shots significantly.
I also determined that the cause of the slow current rises experienced
over the past couple of weeks seems to be excess gas/density rise
due to the early pg3 puff in segment 1. Reducing the tail of
this puff succeeded in reducing the density rise in the first 50msec
and restoring fast current rises. The RCUR error that develops during
the run is still there, but was not responsible for the change in
current ramp rate. I had been compensating for this effect, increasing
the offset in seg1 RCUR to 4000 by shot#8; this value was left for
the remainder of the run, but may not be useful.
After we went to the low current scan at shot#16, I tried several tweaks
to eliminate the current overshoot to 630kA or so. Replacing part of
the seg1 pg3 puff was not successful, and I didn't want to go all the
way back to where we started. Instead I turned on Ip feedback in seg 1,
with the same gain (P=1.8) as used in the start of seg2. This didn't
really help much in restraining the overshoot, but doesn't seem to
do anything bad. I think the only good way to control the overshoot is
to crowbar earlier, as we've done in the past.
Density control with the cryopump continues to be problematic. I made
several changes to the PID gains over the course of the run (see logbook
entries), but without getting a robust control setting. There also
continues to be a discrepancy between the feedback level and the
TCI Nl04 value, which seems to amount to an offset of ~5e18, i.e.
I needed to target 0.5e19 less than I wanted to get the valve to
stop calling for gas.
There were no serious delays for computer issues today, although at one
point the computer guys were having trouble communicating with the EO.
A spurious fault (comm fault between shots) from the OH2 PLC required
a power room access to clear/checkout. We also had one TF failure, this
time with no problem in the tree, resulting in a dud. The one fizzle was
probably due to a cryopump dump, with a 40% increase in pressure at t=0.
All shots ran full length, and only one had any runaways at all (#25), and
that was less than 1e14 equivalent.

| Jul 16 2010 08:58:50:897AM | 1100716001 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#1: No power test shot with gas, mainly to exercise PG3, also to check the cycle. IGT=2.9e-7 in check Got gas, pg3 pulse ok, ratiomatic to .13mTorr @t=0 (cryo off, no fields) Looks ok. Ready to try for plasma |
| Jul 16 2010 09:11:15:767AM | 1100716002 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#2: First plasma attempt Tvess=40C, IGT=3.5e-8 target=5e19,800kA plasma full length, no runaways, probes poking Fast current rise, clean, no bounce, G-side .064mTorr Nl04 to 6e19 and falls after 1.1sec,could use more gas in early flattop; still not happy with Int gain behavior RCUR initial offset error near 2500, dropping to ~0 at t=0+ Leave it for now. Next: start I gain earlier, increase I to 1.5 |
| Jul 16 2010 09:29:19:280AM | 1100716003 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#3: start nl04 I gain earlier, increase I from 1 to 1.5, P from 2 to No startup changes (yet) Before shot: Power room access to restart Longpulse cpci, per jas&twf Note that the chat line is not showing up in logbook, and the chime is not sounding on the engops computer; lots of write-only communication IGT=1.9e-7, cryo sitting a long time before init, but seems to be holding result: plasma full length, no hards density a little flatter, still between 5.5 and 6e19. G-side pressure was higher, over .075mTorr, probably time to drop pg4 current rise still good, maybe a little slower Next: Pg4 from 55ms to 52msec, will do locked mode shot next for mlr |
| Jul 16 2010 09:40:36:583AM | 1100716004 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#4: Pg4 from 55ms to 52msec, seg2 off, seg3 on will do locked mode shot next for mlr before continuing with the MP Load at 16-Jul-2010 09:30:24.00 plasma disrupts at 1.65sec in rampdown Looks like locked mode, as requested. Next: back to the program, reload seg2 |
| Jul 16 2010 10:01:47:777AM | 1100716005 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#5:back to the program, seg3 off seg2 on RCUR offset from 2500 to 3000 in seg1 (error had gone -ve, Ip slower) No pg4 change, hope the ramp-down disruption wasn't too dirty IGT=3e-7 in check,ves=36C Result: No TF. It is turned on in the engineering tree this time No obvious faults, no change in setup. Just try again We're showing high oh2 coax resistance readings with no TF. Not sure why that happened either. |
| Jul 16 2010 10:08:03:247AM | 1100716006 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#6: Try again IGT=1e-7 at INIT plasma full length, no runaways. Very slow current rise this time, down to 150kA at 50msec Ratiomatic shows .06mTorr, nl04~8e18 at .02sec RCUR error near zero at -.02sec, -2500 at t=0 Next: going to next density point 0.7e20 |
| Jul 16 2010 10:23:21:313AM | 1100716007 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#7: nl04 from 0.5 to 0.7e20 seg1 rcur offset from 3000 to 3500 IGT=2.7e-7 in INIT, vess=36C plasma full length, no runaways current rise still slow, maybe a little better nl04=7.6e19, fairly flat. probe pokes showing up on dalpha trace Rcur error similar to 6, maybe even dropped? Next: repeat this density |
| Jul 16 2010 10:38:25:957AM | 1100716008 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#8: repeat nl04=7e19 raise seg1 rcur offset from 3500 to 4000 plasma full length, no runaways current rise even slower, barely to 130kA at 50msec Rcur error in seg1 about the same, maybe a little more negative! This isn't making sense to me; the value is 3000 lower than on shot#2 Meanwhile, the density in the current rise is taking off. Next: Repeat this density, decrease pg4 puff |
| Jul 16 2010 10:49:05:027AM | 1100716009 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#9: repeat nl04=7e19 decrease pg4 puff from 52 to 47msec plasma full length, no runaways ratiomatic down to .057mTorr, current rise a little faster still under 160kA at .05sec Next: raise nl04 to 9e19. |
| Jul 16 2010 11:08:21:197AM | 1100716010 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#10: nl04 from 7 to 9e19, add some pg3 at .25sec No startup changes this time IGT=3.7e-7, Tv=28C plasma full length, no runaways got the requested density current rise a little slower, grat~.057mTorr Cameras seem to have missed the plasma on this shot Next: repeat the density, decrease pg4 again |
| Jul 16 2010 11:19:46:020AM | 1100716011 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#11: repeat nl04=9e19, instead of decreasing pg4, try dropping pg3 at .015 from 54 to 20 plasma full length, no runaways current rise back to normal: 245kA at .05sec. That seems to be the source of the extra density. Next: move on to 1.1e20 |
| Jul 16 2010 11:40:23:420AM | 1100716012 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#12: nl04 from 0.9 to 1.1e20 No startup changes this time. ITG=3.5e-7, Tv=26C at INIT (15:37 in recool) plasma full length (1.9sec), no runaways density per request, current rise still ok, down a tad Grat around .057mTorr Next: drop pg4 a little, repeat 1.1e20 |
| Jul 16 2010 11:55:59:400AM | 1100716013 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#13: drop pg4 from 47 to 43msec We are now waiting ~15min between shots, pump was shut off to prevent overcooling vessel Tv=25C. IGT=3.5e-7 at INIT plasma full length, no runaways current rise ok, 220kA at .05sec, Grat=.054mTorr Next: nl04 to 1.3e20 |
| Jul 16 2010 12:20:09:430PM | 1100716014 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#14: nl04 from 1.1 to 1.3e20,increase pg3 at .25s from 50 to 70 move seg1 pg3 point from .015s,20V to .010s,20V plasma full length, no runaways density is pretty ragged, looks like it's oscillating a bit. Current rise is good, up to 265kA at 50msec Next: back off on P gain on NL04 form 3 to 2, extend I gain to end of pulse |
| Jul 16 2010 12:51:05:927PM | 1100716015 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#15: nl04 from 1.1 to 1.3e20,increase pg3 at .25s from 50 to 70 move seg1 back off on P gain on NL04 form 3 to 2, extend I gain to end of pulse, increase D from 3 to 4 Reduce pg3 puff in seg2 Seg1: EF4 from -1280 to -1270 We're now at 20min shot cycle, trying to balance TF cooling and vessl temp. plasma full length, no runaways, density still oscillating maybe worse big marfe/injection around 1.4sec Next: Probably go to 540kA and 0.34e20 |
| Jul 16 2010 01:07:59:497PM | 1100716016 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#16:go to 540kA and 0.34e20, remove pg3 in seg2 Turn on oh1_crossover routine Leave nl04 PID at [2,4,1.5] plasma full length, no runaways density made it down to 3e19 on the first shot! It's actually puffing a little later in flattop I could stand the slower rampups here, think I'll put back some seg1 pg3 Next: repeat this density |
| Jul 16 2010 01:31:13:547PM | 1100716017 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#17: Move seg1 pg3 point from (.01s,20V) to (.015s,20V) to slow the current rise a little. drop nl04 target from .34 to .30e20 plasma full length, no runaways current rise is actually a little faster density looks pretty good. Next: raise nl04 to 4.7e19 |
| Jul 16 2010 01:51:42:173PM | 1100716018 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#18: raise nl04 to 4.7e19 Raise pg3 at .015sec from 20 to 30V plasma full length, no runaways nl04 gets to 5.2e19 (asked for 4.7) still overshooting on current, now the pg3 isn't holding it back Next: drop target to 4.3e19, try to get closer to what we want |
| Jul 16 2010 02:17:43:660PM | 1100716019 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#19: drop target to 4.3e19, try to get closer to what we want Turn on Ip gain=1 in seg1 from .05sec, aiming for .5MA at 1sec plasma full length, no runaways, not much improvement on ip overshoot density also about the same. Did I not load the changes? Looks like it tried, but not hard enough Next: On to 6e19 (program 5.6 and see how it does) |
| Jul 16 2010 02:41:05:990PM | 1100716020 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#20: nl04 from 4.3 to 5.6e19, trying to actually get 6e19 Copy Ip wire from seg2 to seg1, start gain at .04sec, P=1.8 plasma full length, no runaways Current still overshoots; I think the only way to stop it is crowbar early density comes out 6.2e19, except for a bump at .75sec, not sure what that is. Next: repeat |
| Jul 16 2010 03:01:51:093PM | 1100716021 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#21:repeat nl04 target 5.6e19 Increase first gain step on Ip at .356sec from 2.6 to 5 No startup changes There was a glitch on oh2 plc that popped the PF breaker; engineers checking it out in the power room fizzle. Grat pressure was up to .068mTorr from .05 on previous shot but it had been higher earlier. Next: drop pg3 in seg1 from 30 to 20V at .015sec |
| Jul 16 2010 03:29:01:533PM | 1100716022 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#22:drop pg3 in seg1 from 30 to 20V at .015sec repeat nl04 target 5.6e19 Increase first gain step on Ip at .356sec from 2.6 to 5 Cryo is burbling in INIT, but gets to -8 scale by Check plasma full length, no runaways, density ok early, maybe sags a little after the first plunge. Should be good for this density Grat was back down to .05mTorr this time. Next: Move on to .74e20 (program .70) |
| Jul 16 2010 03:33:09:593PM | 1100716023 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#23: Move on to 7.4e19 (program nl04 7.0e19), add a 40V pg3 puff at .25sec ITG==2.6e-7 in INIT, vessel at 22C; 18min in recool plasma full length, no runaways overshot on the density with the seg2 pg3 puff, went up to 8e19 and sagged back down to 6.3e19. Next: tweak density gains and feedforward |
| Jul 16 2010 03:54:57:450PM | 1100716024 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#24: tweak density gains and feedforward max pg3 at .25sec from 40 to 30V, keep level at 10V bias to EOF Drop integral gain from 1.5 to 1 18 min in RECOOL, IGT=2.5e-7, Ves=23C plasma full length, no runaways density flatter at 7.4e19, on target Current rise is getting a little slow again, down to 210kA at .05sec, still reaches .64MA after seg switch though. Next: raise to .88e20 ? |
| Jul 16 2010 04:18:53:817PM | 1100716025 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#25: move pg3 point from .015 to .010sec (20V) Decrease inner gap: clearin from -.001 to -.003 rcur from (.657,.661,.661) to (.656,.660,.660) at (0.5,1.2,1.5)sec raise nl04 to .83e20 target (aiming for .88e20) IGT=2.5e-7,ves=22C at INIT (18minutes) plasma full length, some runaways; injection in rampup at .025sec big marfe starts around crossover .61sec Next: abandon this density, reload shot#22 |
| Jul 16 2010 04:19:43:563PM | 1100716025 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#25: move pg3 point from .015 to .010sec (20V) Decrease inner gap: clearin from -.001 to -.003 rcur from (.657,.661,.661) to (.656,.660,.660) at (0.5,1.2,1.5)sec raise nl04 to .83e20 target (aiming for .88e20) IGT=2.5e-7,ves=22C at INIT (18minutes) plasma full length, some runaways; injection in rampup at .025sec big marfe starts around crossover .61sec Next: abandon this density, reload shot#22 seg2 |
| Jul 16 2010 04:40:15:173PM | 1100716026 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#26: import seg2 from shot#22 (aiming for nl04=6e19) No startup changes, hoping the injection isn't a sign of impending doom 19minutes in recool, 2.6e-7, 22C plasma full length, no runaways nl04=6.2e19, startup better this time. Brian seems happy with the makeup data this time. Next: SL is thinking |
| Jul 16 2010 05:09:17:010PM | 1100716027 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#27: Aiming for nl04=4e19, target 3.6e19 This is supposed to be intermediate between densities we got earlier plasma full length, no runaways, Density has two steps 3.5 and 4.7e19; gas off between .1 and .65 sec, then puffs a little through .9sec, giving the second step. I still need to improve the density feedback with the cryopump. startup not so good, looks like it has a vertical thrash and a hesitation around 30msec; could have lost it, but it survived. Ip feedback starting at 40msec may have helped, or not; I'm not sure if it mattered at all. END OF RUN |
