MP#570 - Boundary layer heat transport experiments in L-mode plasmas Goal We will do a couple of 0.8 MA, 5.4 tesla shots at low density (NL04 ~ 0.5) and then concentrate on 1.1 MA. 5.4 tesla shots. Finally, we will dial up some 4 tesla shots at 0.8 MA for comparison. Setup Reload shot#1100716006, with request for NL04 ~ 0.5. This shot had the desired strike point sweep on the outer divertor, with all gaps tuned up nicely, including a ramp of the outer gap for the ASP. We will adjust gap programming as needed. NINJA should be filled to 8 PSI D2 for GPI. Program gas to hit plasma at 1.2 s. IR camera on and aligned. Set ASP, FSP and WASP scanning probes to fire at 0.8, 1.0 and 1.2 seconds Argon will be enabled for HIREX data at the same puff parameters as on 1100716. Cryopump with be used from the start. Helium ECDC for 1 hr prior to run. No ICRF or LHRF. A. LSN, 5.4 tesla, 0.8 MA NL04~ 0.5e20 Two shots, probes scanning to resolve shear layer. B. LSN, 5.4 tesla, 1.1 MA NL04~ 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6e20 Two shots at each density, probes scanning to resolve shear layer. C. LSN, 4 tesla, 0.8 MA NL04~ 0.4, 0.55, 0.7, 0.85,1.0, 1.2e20 Two shots at each density, probes scanning to resolve shear layer. |

| Run Summary for 1100721
MP#570 -- "Boundary layer heat transport experiments in L-mode plasmas" This was a tough run today with 10 fizzles, a dud and a no-power shot thrown in there as well. On shot#1 it was discovered that the WASP coil drive power supply had gone belly up since it was last used -- no data were collected from this diagnostic today. We had a number of shot cycle delays as well, including delays to fix communication to the cryopump and to run ECDC to clean up (in response to a string of fizzles). Runaways visited us in the first few discharges, with a K-limiter TC lighting up on shot#4. Later in the run, a nasty CPCI/MDS+ problem bit the A-port scanning probe system, causing the session leader to poke the probe too deep (Shot#27 --1.3 MW of tungsten radiation). Fortunately, the probe survived the event. Jim Terry battled the IR camera system again today, patching problems with non-monotonic frame time stamps and the insertion of bogus camera frames. In addition, ongoing improvements to the IR temperature calibrations were made. GPI/NINJA was operated successfully on many shots. Shot#1 through 5 (minus early runaway disruption on shot#4) were spent revisiting low-density 0.8 MA discharges where we have found the best mapping of midplane and divertor electron pressure profiles. We got good probe-inferred heat flux profiles from these discharges with the IR camera and GPI operating on shot#5. Shot#6 was a locked-mode discharge for HIREXSR calibration. On shot#7 and thereafter, we turned our attention to 1.1 MA shots. Shot#7 ended with a ramp-down disruption. The IR camera stabilization algorithm was not able to handle the 5 or so saturated frames at the disruption time, losing the lock for all earlier frames. After the disruption recovery fizzles of shot#8 and 9, we got a good 1.1 MA shot in the sheath-limited regime. The heat flux profiles as inferred from the surface thermocouples and LPs indicated a narrower e-folding profile (2 mm) compared to 0.8 MA (2.5 mm) and 0.54 MA (exceeding 3 mm) in the same regimes. Shots 11 through 15 (minus the fizzle on shot#13) were spent optimizing probe scans and varying the density a bit (NL04 ~ 0.7 to 0.95). Shot#15 ended with a ramp-down disruption. Coincidently, the DNB fired at the time of disruption. Then we hit string of no-plasma (dud/no-power/fizzle) shots (16-24). But because the DNB is not connected to the fizzle detector, the beam continued to fire onto the inner wall tiles during subsequent fizzles. There was some concern that this was in turn causing crud to come off the inner wall, sustaining the string of fizzles. For this reason, the beam was turned off for the remainder of the run. The plasma came back on shot#25, but by now the scanning probes were turned off for fear of not knowing the proper targeting. Shots 26, 27, 28 were attempts to get the A-port scanning probe targeted at the separatrix with NL04 ~ 0.9. It turns out that the probe voltage signals recorded by the CPCI system were corrupted for shot# 25 and beyond; the reported voltages were a factor of 2 or 4 lower in amplitude that the actual voltages. This glitch caused the software to deduce electron temperatures that were a factor of 2 or more lower than the actual values. Thinking that the scanning probe had only reached the 40 eV flux surface (when it probably had already reached 80 eV), the session leader targeted the probe too deep on shot#27. That poke almost killed the probe. Shot#28 went through with clean probe signals (but again reporting low Te values). Shot#29 disrupted at 0.35 seconds. In the end, we managed to collect some good heat flux profile data for 1.1 MA conditions in the low to mid density range. We will need to collect the higher density data on another day. No progress was made on 4 tesla discharges today (part C of the run plan). | Not the easiest day.
We had some hard x-ray problems early, which appeared to be cured by increasing the Bz bias(EF4). When we went up in current to 1.1 MA (shot 7), we hit the OH2L PLC limit and had an early ramp-down disruption, followed by 2 fizzles. Shot 15 disrupted essentially at end of flattop. Then we had a power supply dud, and a no power shot (init failure on shot 17), followed by 6 fizzles in a row. Fiddling with fill and fields, plus 12 minutes of ECDC, and turning off the cryopump, did not help. Turning off the PG3 puff at -10 ms for shot 25 might have been the key to getting the plasmas back. After that we had 4 full length shots at 1.1 MA. The last shot (29) suffered an OH crowbar at 0.3 seconds, and then promptly disrupted.
