| SL plan for MP296 -TS calibration using ECE cutoffs at 4T
PO: Irby SL: Ma The first half of today's run will execute MP296 for TS density calibration using ECE cutoffs at 4.0T. This MP ran routinely before physics operation or any time TS density calibration is off and need to be corrected. 5~8 discharges are required in order to be statistically meaningful. PO may load target discharge from shot 1091216032. Plasma params: Ip=800kA, Bt=4.0T, nl04 rise from 1.0n20 to 2.0n20 during flat-top. After the target discharge being successfully produced, repeat it for 5~8 shots. The plasma will be subject to minor vertical position adjustment in different shots in order to maximize the overlap of ECE and TS channels in midplane mapping. GPC grating need adjustment to view in 4.0T before the run. Some GPC2 channels will undergo LFS cutoffs which could be useful for calibrating some core channels measuring near plasma edge as well as edge TS system. The MP is expected to be accomplished before noon if things go well. |

| The antenna conditioning has progressed well.
J antenna was able to run at 2 MW level to L-mode plasma. D and E were able to run together at 2.4 MW. H-modes were obtained in Lower single null. H/(H+D) started below 10% earlier, then rose to ~20% near the end of the run. |

| Jul 28 2010 07:50:39:420AM | Jim Irby | The machine ran extremely well today. There were 28 plasmas and no fizzles or duds continuing the trend from last Friday. There was one shot with significant runaway activity. A 1 ms increase in the pg3 seg 1 gas may have fixed the problem. Note that in most cases the runaways are associated with, and proceeded by several milliseconds by a drop in nl_04 during startup.
We began with several cycle tests to get the data system going and to check out pg3. We were unable to get any gas out of pg3 until I programmed in a 100% 50 ms pulse on shot 4. It then worked well for the first plasma shot (5). This valve may be getting a little more "sticky". Tommy has a spare he is testing out. Shots 5 to 10 comprised the first part of the Thomson Scattering ECE cutoff run. Generally went smoothly with only a small adjustment in ZX_L to bring the plasma into better view by the edge channels. Density took off at 0.83 s for no clear reason, but was acceptable to the SL. All these shots disrupted around 1.3 to 1.4 s. With some adjustments to the gas programming the pulse lengths could probably have been extended. We began ICRF conditioning on shot 11 by loading from 1100723030 and adjusting Bt to 5.4T. Plasma ran full length. H/(H+D) started out at around 6% at the beginning of the run and dropped down to 4% by shot 10. When we switched to ICRF it began to climb as expected. It was at 10% by shot 12 eventually rising above 15 to 20 %. We switched back to TS cal on shot 25 and back to ICRF on shot 29. Amanda worked on ECE grating changes during the first set of ICRF conditioning shots. There were no cooling issues today. Shot cycles were mostly determined by cell/lab access and the PO being slow to push the button. problems: . took a few cycle tests to get the data system and the gas puff going . ratiomatic tripped off for a few shots. Signal became noisy. Tommy swithched filaments. Pressure indicated dropped a factor of two following this change. . Steve pointed out that it has to be turned on in its edit screen. We also needed to load the default settings. The dpcs_piezo_chopper routine requires "pulse_gas3" with the quotes to be added to the output box.
