| 1st half of the run:
Post-boronization (1st in this campaign) recovery, and check out LH+ICRF combination Start from 1100730034, 5.4 T, 800 kA, nl=0.9e20 m^-2. Ramp up RF power, and condition the antennas. Need to watch neutral pressure, H/D, divertor heating and limiter (GH and K) heating, antenna voltage handling in H-modes (EDA). After the machine condition is good for low density plasma, run low density plasmas, and check out whether LH can be run together with ICRF antenna(s). |

| RUN PLAN for 1100804(PM)
This plan for 2nd half of run assumes reasonable progress is made in the AM on (a) obtaining steady H-modes with ICRF, post-boronization (b) operating ICRF and LHRF simultaneously Requested systems: ICRF, LH, cryopump, Ar puff for Hirex, standard error field correction, DNB if available Requested diagnostics: TS, ECE, TCI, HXR camera, div probes, bolos, Ly-a, PCI, reflectometry, Edge CXRS, Special request for LH group: spectrum analyzer connected to probe on LH grill Starting shot: Load from 1080306013. 5.4T, 600kA, target nl04=6x1019m-2. Pumped. This shot is near DN with a ZCUR ramp programmed in around 0.7--0.8s, in order to shift from LSN to USN. Apply Prf=1.7MW from 0.6--1.5. Leave LH off to begin. Shot plan: The following shot plan is intended for a full day's run with good operational conditions. Getting through the 3rd or 4th step in this session will be considered a great success. -Step 1. Run the above shot and evaluate quality of the resulting H-mode. Adjust target density, input power if necessary to obtain a steady EDA condition. If feasible, change timing so that ICRF is on from 0.5s to 1.5s and the SSEP sweep completes at 0.75s. -Step 2. Apply LH power at 110° phasing (n||~2.3) into the H-mode from 0.9 to 1.4s. Try a power level of 700kW, and lower power if necessary until a steady LH trace can be achieved. Evaluate effects on discharge; compare with 1080306013. -Step 3. Lower hybrid power scan. Take the result of Step 2, and run with PLH at ½ and ¼ of its baseline value, keeping other parameters fixed. For the half power case, operate the LH grill with only the central sets of columns, so that the in the next step, the counter-current and heating phasing can be tried at the same power level. -Step 4. Phasing scan. If a clear pedestal modification is observed at half power in Step 3, then rerun shot at that power level with (a) counter-Ip phasing and (b) heating phasing for comparison. -Step 5. ICRF power scan. Take the case established in Step 2. At 1.1s, step ICRF power up by 0.5MW, and at 1.25s, step up again by 0.5MW (or to max available). Then, run a case in which ICRF is stepped down by 0.5MW at 1.1s, and then again at 1.25s. Then, to establish a control, rerun these shots with Plh=0. -Step 6. Density/accessibility scan at 600kA. Take the base case from Step 2 and begin increasing target density in an attempt to promote inaccessibility of LH waves. Try nl04 of 0.8, 1.0x1020m-2. If resultant H-modes remain accessible to LH, reduce phase angle to 90°, and then possibly to 80°. -Step 7. Density/accessibility scan at 800kA. Raise Ip to 800kA and keep ICRF and LH programs roughly as in Step 6. Run successive shots with nl04 of 0.8 and 1.0x1020m-2. If pedestal modification is not observed, attempt to increase phase angle to 120°, and possibly to 130° -Step 8. Higher currents. If promising results are seen in Step 7 at low n||, then raise Ip to 1MA, and then 1.2MA, keeping ICRF and LH programs roughly as in Step 7. Use nl04 of 1.0x1020m-2. It may be difficult to obtain a steady EDA H-mode target for the LH pulse at these higher currents. If this is the case, then attempt to enter this condition by beginning with a successful case from Step 6 or 7 and ramping Ip up after LH turn-on. |

| Summary for the afternoon session:
This was a productive half-run, which will be continued at 9:00 tomorrow. We accomplished the following: 1. Established EDA H-mode target for LH injection that was utilized on 1080306. (600kA, USN pumped, <2MW ICRF) 2. Injected LHRF into the target at power levels up to 600kW. 3. Reproduced density pump-out in the H-mode with LH on (as on 1080306013). 4. Performed a LH power scan to determine dependence of the pump-out on P_LH. Our initial results show that we can obtain the pedestal modification with lower n_|| than had been previously employed (~1.9 rather than 2.3), which strongly suggests that wave accessibility to the core is non-essential to initiate the modification. Also, we established that the density pump-out rate is depends on P_LH, and seems to have a threshold power of somewhere between 120 and 200kW. The significant results today were obtained with 90deg phasing on the LH. Attempts to couple in this condition at 70deg and 110deg were less successful. |

| Machine ran well today. We had a fizzle on shot 12 that may have been
the result of a bounce. Earl suggested that we increase EF4 from -1280 to -1270 A. That seems to have fixed the problem. We spent the first half of the run day getting the machine running following boronization, and conditioning the ICRF antennas. After a couple of disruptions we had full length plasma for this part of the run from shot 03 on. On shot 17 we switched to the EDA h-mode run with ICRF, LH, and cryopumping. Some tweaks were required to ZCUR and ZXU to make the plasma more like the discharges from 2008. These were near double null plasmas. We had difficulty getting into rampdown (beyond 1.5 s) after the ZXU tweaks were made. Steve Wolfe noted that ZXU was being swept out strongly positive at about 1.38 s. When we just kept ZXU flat, we were able to extend the discharge well into rampdown (shot 30). |

| Aug 4 2010 01:22:48:370PM | 1100804017 | Jerry Hughes | Pushing forward to try to make progress on MP614.
First shot. Try to reproduce something like th target conditions in 1080306013. Start with LH turned off. Result. Nice cruopumped plasma at 600kA. Not enough RF to sustain an H-mode, although it looks like some dithering is occuring early. SSEP sweep occurs as desired and density control looks good after it goes USN. Next: Retry. |
| Aug 4 2010 01:43:08:847PM | 1100804018 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 18.
Retry of 17. Peak ICRF is getting closer to the demand of 1.7MW, late in the shot at least. H-modes are fairly radiative. Matt informs us that the Ar puff is 100ms in this load. Oops. Next: Retry with improved ICRF, Ar turned off. |
| Aug 4 2010 01:55:04:190PM | 1100804019 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 19.
Better. 2 longer EDA H-modes. Prf~1.7MW peak, with faults. The upper x-point is ~2.4cm lower than on 1080306. This has the consequence of putting the strike point on the cryopumping slots, which is not recommended. Next: repeat with ZXU increased. |
| Aug 4 2010 02:15:30:800PM | 1100804020 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 20.
Result: A very nice EDA H-mode with 1.7MW peak RF. In raising the X-point, we prevented the full transition to USN, i.e. SSEP didn't go through zero. Next: PO will make a shift to the ZCUR program, try to go through DN. LH will try from 1.0s to 1.4s at the 600kW level. |
| Aug 4 2010 02:24:06:127PM | 1100804021 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 21.
Best RF yet. Good low density EDA target. LH is wearing a :( As on last shot, we are disrupting at the beginning of rampdown. The change in ZCUR did not take effect after 1s. PO will fix for next shot. |
| Aug 4 2010 02:48:25:147PM | 1100804022 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 22.
Equilibrium looks fairly good now. RF pulse is of excellent quality. Still have a good target EDA plasma for long period. LH still trips out at <300kW. Greg pins it on column 7, and Yijun suggests reducing power demand on E and putting a bit more into J-port. During the LH ramp from 150 to ~230kW, an increase in the ECE signal and an increase in the H-alpha observed. Same phenomenon on shot 21. Dan reports the ramped tiles are getting hot. We will need to try to alleviate that on future shots by going more USN. Next shot: Try Yijun's power redistribution plan. |
| Aug 4 2010 03:14:09:533PM | 1100804023 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 23.
Still disrupting at around 1.5s. The redistribution of RF power did not cure the LH. However, it does get to nearly 400kW. The ECE and H-alpha respond, and it looks like the Isat on UDIV07 increases during the pulse. Greg is checking things out with a dummy load shot. He doesn't trust the phasing on klystron 4. Next: Jim will increase ZCUR to get heat flux off the lower divertor. |
| Aug 4 2010 03:15:47:110PM | 1100804024 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 24.
Similar to previous shot. Phenomenology during LH rise is the same. Next: Amanda and Greg have the idea of trying lower n||. |
| Aug 4 2010 03:31:50:207PM | 1100804025 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 25.
Same as before, but LH will step up in phase during the shot: 70, 90, then 110 deg. This is promising. The 90 deg phase runs well, and appears to give good density pump-out. nebar rises after LH turn off There is an issue with edge TS. Trying to evauate it. Oh, It's a timebase shift in the L8212. It may be correctable. |
| Aug 4 2010 03:46:32:773PM | 1100804026 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 26.
Shot ran well. Clear beginnings of density pump-out at LH turn on. Effect killed by an injection, and radiated power rise at 1.06s. Max P_LH=500kW Edge TS timebase issue appears to be fixed now. |
| Dec 1 2010 11:18:37:843AM | 1100804027 | Jerry Hughes |
Shot 27. This is the key shot of this run, even though I somehow neglected to make an entry about it on the day of the run. PLH=600kW. Clear desnity pump-out in H-mode. |
| Aug 4 2010 04:06:58:837PM | 1100804028 | Jerry Hughes |
Are those ELMs at 1.01--1.03s??? |
| Aug 4 2010 04:18:04:007PM | 1100804028 | Jerry Hughes |
Same EDA target as before. LH power is 200kW with a step up to 400kW after 250ms. The dn/dt appears to be smaller at the lower power. The saturation density matches the case at P_LH=600kW |
| Aug 4 2010 04:44:30:710PM | 1100804029 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 29.
P_LH at 320kW. Good pump-out. Faster dn/dt than at 200kW. |
| Aug 4 2010 04:45:53:763PM | 1100804030 | Jerry Hughes | P_LH at 130kW. Unfortunately the H-mode was lost before the LH ever turned on.
Next: retry. |
| Aug 4 2010 05:03:03:150PM | 1100804031 | Jerry Hughes | The H-mode stays around a bit longer that time.
P_LH at ~120kW for 200ms. It looks like if there is density pump-out, it's small. The Prad is a little high, but not to a level that would mitigate the pedestal pump-out at higher P_LH. So, it looks like the threshold for the pedestal mod is between 120 and 200kW at this plasma condition and this LH phasing. Next: Run a shot with no LH power. |
| Aug 4 2010 05:06:45:600PM | 1100804031 | Jerry Hughes |
An attempt at a control with 0 LH power. This back-transitioned early again. We may have to turn off Ar tomorrow altogether. |
