RUN PLAN for 1100805(AM) This run will pick up where yesterday left off. At 13:00 we will hand over to Andrea. Requested systems: ICRF, LH, cryopump, Ar puff for Hirex, standard error field correction, DNB if available Requested diagnostics: TS, ECE, TCI, HXR camera, div probes, bolos, Ly-a, PCI, reflectometry, Edge CXRS, Special request for LH group: spectrum analyzer connected to probe on LH grill 1. Load from 1100804032. Diasble Ar puff. ICRF is at 1.7MW from 0.6 to 1.5s. Keep LH off for first shot. 2. (a) Repeat 1, but with LH on from 1.0 to 1.4s at an intermediate power level (say ~300kW, as on shot 1100804029). Instead of using all 16 columns, use the middle 4 only. 90deg phasing (b) Re-run 2(a) with 90deg counter-Ip phasing (c) Re-run with heating phasing 3(a) Repeat 1, but with the following changes: * The ZCUR ramp will occur 0.1s earlier * LH will be on from 0.9 to 1.4s at 500kW * ICRF demand will be 1.7MW from 0.50 to 1.10s, 2.1MW from 1.10 to 1.25s, and 2.5MW from 1.25 to 1.5s. 3(b) Repeat 3(a) but with LH turned off **we might skip step 4 and head to 5 if time is getting short (or boronization is wearing off) 4(a) Repeat 3(a), but with the folowing change: * ICRF demand will be 1.7MW from 0.50 to 1.10s, 1.3MW from 1.10 to 1.25s, and 0.9MW from 1.25 to 1.5s. 4(b) Repeat 4(a) but with LH turned off 5. If it is difficult to access EDA H-mode in higher Ip plasmas, try a Ip ramp after the LH has turned on and pumped the H-mode down. This is probably too much already for a half day. But there is more in the MP that we could do if time and conditions allowed.

1/2 run unsuccessful. Repeated LH trips make data unusable. The only shot that ran cleanly was 26, and that was not with the desired waveform/plasma conditions for the MP.

Summary for first half of run 1100805. Overall, not as satisfying as 1100804 but still worthwhile. We had some difficulty this morning reproducing the H-modes with LH pedestal modification observed yesterday. In short we never really got much LH power into a 600kA H-mode. Often this was because excessive radiation kept triggering H-L transitions before the LH turned on. Other times the H-mode would be lost shortly after LH turn on. In at least one case (shot 5), an ELM occurring shortly after the LH turn on seemed to cause E-port to fault. After a computer-related delay, and some shots spent trying to set up for a +90/-90/0 phasing scan, we decided to leave the 600kA target and try 800kA. These plasmas suffered from injections as they crossed through DN and put flux on the upper divertor at power, and so I had ICRF delay turn on until after the SSEP sweep was complete. In doing so it was possible to get H-mode data with and without LH. These H-modes were all fairly radiative, which I attribute to both the USN bias and deteriorating wall conditions. Despite their transient nature these H-modes are informative as well, since we observe a reduced rate of density rise in the H-mode with LH on at the transition, as compared with the the non-LH H-mode.

The machine ran reasonably well today. ICRF and LH struggled in various ways (see session leader summaries). Shot 2 was a no-power (data hang). Some of the shots had late breakdown, including a couple of fizzles. Fiddling with EF4 and fill pressure may have helped. Shot 14 (first of the day without the cryopump) was a dud, probably because of low fill pressure. No convectron gauge again today, so we were flying blind on the prefill. The last shot (27) was short with very strong runaways and hard x-ray bursts; something fell in around 30 ms.
