| This run day was in support of MP 612, Exploration of LHCD Density Limit. The goal of the day was to both confirm the data on the density limit taken during the 2008 campaign and examine the role of plasma topology and fueling on the density limit. Ramped density scans were peformed in single and double null, and also in inner wall limited discharges.
Single density scans show agreement in non-thermal electron bremsstrahlung from the HXR camera as compared to results from 2008. Preliminary analysis shows a small increase in HXR emissivity at high density in double null as compared to single null. HXR emission appears to decrease like 1/ne in inner wall limited discharges up to line averaged densities of 1.6x10^20 m^-3. Summary of good shots: 7: 5.4T, 800 kA, nebar=-.7-1.3e20, PLH=400kW, n||=1.9 10: good shot, no HXR data 19: 550 kW LH power, n||=1.9, nebar=0.7-1.2e20, close to double null, 800 kA, 5.4 T, possible H-mode at 1.1 s? 21: nebar=0.8-1.1e20 in L-mode, nebar=1.1-1.5e20 in H-mode, 800 kA, 5.4 T, double null 23: ELM-free H-mode, nebar=1.3-2.5e20, 5.4T, 800 kA, 600 kW LH power, double null 25: 600 kW LH power, n||=1.9, nebar=1.0-1.5e20, 5.4 T, 800 kA, double null with inner wall puffing 27: Inner wall limited with some trips but possibly usable data. nebar~1.4e20. 28: Inner wall limited, nebar=1.3-1.5e20, PLH=600 kW, n||=1.9 29: nebar=0.7-1.15e20, inner wall limited, PLH=600 kW, bad HXR data 30: Trophy shot! nebar=1.3-1.5e20, inner wall limited, PLH=600 kW, 5.4T, 800 kA, n||=1.9 |

| We ran three configurations today with cryo pump for all. They consisted of LSN (001-010) and DN (011-025) which was converted to innerwall limited (026-031) via simple gap control.
The run started with a LSN. This was loaded from 1100805018, a non-cryo shot. Segment 1 was imported from 1100805013 which was the last cryo shot from that run. The double null part of the run started on shot 011. It was loaded from 1100729023. That shot was not attempted during 1100729 because of a series of engineering failues. In turn, it was loaded from 1091022016 and the wire programming updates were applied when it was loaded for 1100729023. During the current run, the shot was modified to provide a more consistent DN that started at an earlier time by fiddling only with zcur. There was an attempt to do inner wall fueling on a few DN discharges (022 - 025) using the Ninja. The inner wall limited discharge (026-031) was made by changing the gaps using clearin and rcur. The first attempt at this configuration (026) was not successful because the clearin changes did not appear in the final pcs programming for the shot although they were entered in the usual way. The second attempt (027) was successful using the same clearin programming as for the first attempt. The engineering failures consisted of the mysterious TF "failure to run" 1100806005 and a commutation fault on the last shot 1100806031 (attempted after 5 pm) which ended the run. On several shots (012 was one) there were alternator bearing vibration warnings. Alternator was contacted in each case. They approved continuing the run. | Aug 6 2010 09:28:10:997AM | 1100806001 | Greg Wallace | All trips on LH. Refco on klystron 4 very high. Will try going to 80 kW/klystron at 40 kV on next shot with klystron 4 into dummy load. Will also move launcher in to 0.1mm behind limiter. Full length plasma at 1.0MA, 5.4 T. Will try to get density ramp and 1.1MA on next shot. |
| Aug 6 2010 09:49:31:387AM | 1100806002 | Greg Wallace | All trips again. Will try 90 deg phasing, all klystrons @40kV 80 kW/klystron into plasma on next shot. |
| Aug 6 2010 10:12:11:840AM | 1100806003 | Greg Wallace | Better after some initial trips at 90 deg. Locked mode disruption at 1.2s. Will retry with slightly higher density on next shot. |
| Aug 6 2010 10:27:18:860AM | 1100806004 | Greg Wallace | LH ran clean but locked mode disrupted at 1.18s. Will be interesting to see what x-rays look like during locked-mode density scan at 1.1MA. Next shot will move on to step 2 from run plan (5.4 T, 800 kA, nl04=4-8e19). |
| Aug 6 2010 10:36:08:570AM | 1100806005 | Greg Wallace | No TF==>no plasma! |
| Aug 6 2010 10:55:19:017AM | 1100806006 | Greg Wallace | Disruption at .75 s. LH ran until disruption. Next shot will go back to starting point from 1100805018 and switch to 800 kA. |
| Aug 6 2010 11:14:41:680AM | 1100806007 | Greg Wallace | Good shot! 5.4 T, nebar = .7-1.3e20, 800 kA. Plh=400 kW, 90 deg. Will try to increase power on next shot (140 kW/klystron, 90 deg) |
| Aug 6 2010 11:23:13:323AM | 1100806008 | Greg Wallace | Disruption at .75 s. Nate says increase in W concentration may have caused disruption. Will increase outer gap for next shot but keep all else constant. |
| Aug 6 2010 11:41:26:797AM | 1100806009 | Greg Wallace | LH ran clean early, then lots of flashes on grill. Two substantial hot spots on C row, looks like 16/dummy and 15/14 septa. Looks like launcher moved in a little bit too much (1269 counts on PLC, which should be exactly flush). Will move launcher back a little to approximately 0.25mm for next shot and repeat. |
| Aug 6 2010 11:59:41:613AM | 1100806010 | Greg Wallace | Good shot! 600 kW net, 90 deg phasing, nebar=.8-1.2e20 (nl04=5-7e19) during LH. Moving on to double null from step 3 of run plan. |
| Aug 6 2010 12:32:11:490PM | 1100806011 | Greg Wallace | LH ran clean until disruption at 0.86 s. Didn't really look DN to me. Will repeat. |
| Aug 6 2010 12:40:51:657PM | 1100806012 | Greg Wallace | Several trips during LH pulse corresponding to flashes on LH camera. Will retry on next shot with reprogrammed zcur to get more consistent DN. |
| Aug 6 2010 12:42:05:243PM | 1100806013 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle. |
| Aug 9 2010 09:51:15:177AM | 1100806014 | Greg Wallace | Disruption at .96s. Some flashing on LH starting at .9s. Will try reducing LH power to 120 kW/klystron (still at 90 deg) for next shot to see if that reduces W source. Bill will continue to fiddle with zcur to get better double null. |
| Aug 6 2010 01:11:20:317PM | 1100806015 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle. |
| Aug 6 2010 01:24:32:260PM | 1100806016 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle. |
| Aug 6 2010 01:36:57:260PM | 1100806017 | Greg Wallace | Dud. |
| Aug 6 2010 01:59:51:517PM | 1100806018 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle. |
| Aug 6 2010 02:12:26:867PM | 1100806019 | Greg Wallace | Good shot! Clean LH shot at 550 kW (120kW/klystron) and 90 deg phasing. nebar=.7-1.4e20 Not quite double null until end of LH pulse. Will try again for something with earlier double null, increase LH to 130 kW/klystron. |
| Aug 6 2010 02:28:17:197PM | 1100806020 | Greg Wallace | Lots of early x-rays. Plasma ramped down at 0.5 s. Will try to repeat. |
| Aug 6 2010 02:43:46:060PM | 1100806021 | Greg Wallace | Good shot! 2 trips late during LH with associated flashing on LH camera. BIG jump in density on LH probes during end of LH pulse. nebar=0.8-1.4e20, Plh=600 kW, . Moving on to inner wall fueling with 10psi NINJA puff at 0.7 and 1.0 s. |
| Aug 9 2010 10:00:43:373AM | 1100806022 | Greg Wallace | First attempt at double null with inner wall fueling. LH ran clean for most of LH pulse, then had some trips associated with flashing on the camera. NINJA puff was not quite enough (if it made it to the plasma). Increasing plenum pressure from 10psi to 20psi for next shot. |
| Aug 6 2010 03:11:00:593PM | 1100806023 | Greg Wallace | Good shot! Went into ELM-free H-mode although unintentionally. A few LH trips associated with flashing on camera but no signs of damage to launcher. Will try again with some argon puffing to see if we can keep out of H-mode. |
| Aug 6 2010 03:22:50:133PM | 1100806024 | Greg Wallace | Lots of LH trips and flashing later in the shot when density on LH probes is very high. Will try reducing density at beginning of pulse and also pulling launcher back for next shot. Will stay with double null and inner wall puff. |
| Aug 6 2010 03:41:54:017PM | 1100806025 | Greg Wallace | Good shot! A little under 600 kW net, 130 kW/klystron at 90 deg. nebar=0.9-1.4e20. Moving on to inner wall limited discharge with density ramp. |
| Aug 6 2010 04:02:15:133PM | 1100806026 | Greg Wallace | Disruption at .75 s trying for inner wall limited plasma. Wasn't inner wall limited and density was too high (nl04~6e19) at 0.7s. Will try again for inner wall limited plasma. |
| Aug 6 2010 04:17:26:227PM | 1100806027 | Greg Wallace | OK shot. Several trips with associated flashes. Got a nice limited plasma but started at pretty high density (nebar=1.15e20). Will try again for lower starting density.
Strange noise on HXR on this shot. |
| Aug 6 2010 04:25:47:443PM | 1100806028 | Greg Wallace | Less flashing on grill, but still did not get density as low as we wanted. Will try one more time for lower density during beginning of LH pulse with inner wall limited plasma. |
| Aug 6 2010 04:45:24:563PM | 1100806029 | Greg Wallace | Good shot! Early LH shows some strange ECE behavior and bad HXR data. Recovers around .9 s. Will try again with larger outer gap from .9 to 1.2s. |
| Aug 6 2010 04:55:37:097PM | 1100806030 | Greg Wallace | Good shot! LH ran clean all the way through. Got small density scan from nebar=1.13-1.3e20. Will try this shot one last time to get full density ramp. |
| Aug 6 2010 05:07:01:503PM | 1100806031 | Greg Wallace | Power supply commutationi failure. Disruption at .4s. |
