| MP612: Expanded exploration of LHCD density limit
Session Leader: G. Wallace Physics Operator: E. Marmar Assistant PO: S. Shiraiwa The primary goal of today's run will be to obtain MSE and scanning probe data of discharges below and above the observed LHCD density limit of ~1e20 m-3. The results from 1100806 show a strong dependence of the density limit on magnetic topology, with a clear increase in non-thermal emission at high density for inner wall limited plasmas. LH setup: 90 deg current drive phasing, 140 kW/klystron, launcher set to 0.1mm behind LH limiter, pulse timing 0.8-1.3 s. C-Mod setup: Overnight ECDC. B_T will be at 5.4 T throughout the day. Start with 1100806030 equilibrium. Cryopump will be used on all shots. Required diagnostics: HXR, ECE, TS, DNB, MSE, ASP, FSP, WASP. 1) Load equilibrium from 1100806030 (5.4 T, 800 kA, limited). Reprogram nl_04 to 4e19 m^-2 during flattop (anticipating slightly higher density than requested). Apply ~600 kW of net LH power (~140 kW/klystron) from 0.8-1.3 s at n_||=1.9 (90 deg phasing). Repeat with scanning probes to obtain SOL profiles. (2-4 shots) 2) Load equilibrium from 1100806021 (5.4 T, 800 kA, double null). Reprogram nl_04 to 4e19 m^-2 during flattop. Apply ~600 kW of net LH power (~140 kW/klystron) from 0.8-1.3 s at n_||=1.9 (90 deg phasing). Repeat with scanning probes to obtain SOL profiles. (2-4 shots) 3) Load equilibrium from 1100806010 (5.4 T, 800 kA, single null). Reprogram nl_04 to 4e19 m^-2 during flattop. Apply ~600 kW of net LH power (~140 kW/klystron) from 0.8-1.3 s at n_||=1.9 (90 deg phasing). Repeat with scanning probes to obtain SOL profiles. (2-4 shots) 4) Repeat step 1 (limited) with nl_04 reprogrammed to 8e19 m^-2 during flattop. (1-2 shots) 5) Repeat step 2 (double null) with nl_04 reprogrammed to 8e19 m^-2 during flattop. (1-2 shots) 6) Repeat step 3 (single null) with nl_04 reprogrammed to 8e19 m^-2 during flattop. (1-2 shots) 7) Inner gap scan in double null. Start with equilibrium from step 5. Ramp CLEARIN from 0.00315 to -0.03 between 0.8 and 1.3 s. Repeat with scanning probes to obtain SOL profiles. (2-4 shots) 8) Inner gap scan in single null. Start with equilibrium from step 6. Ramp CLEARIN from 0.00315 to -0.03 between 0.8 and 1.3 s. Repeat with scanning probes to obtain SOL profiles. (2-4 shots) 9) Repeat step 6 with LH power scan. Set LH power to 40, 70, 110, 140, 170 kW/klystron on each of 5 segments. (1-2 shots) 10) If time allows, try experimenting with the 4-2-4-2-4 powered/unpowered columns approach to look at reflection coefficient pattern. |

| Session Leader Summary for 1100820
MP612: Expanded Exploration of LHCD Density Limit The main goal of this run was to get scanning probe and MSE data for discharges below and above the LHCD density limit in limited and diverted configurations. Good data was obtained in several of the configurations: lower null low density, inner wall limited high density, and lower null high density. Data in double null was difficult to obtain due to H-modes caused by LH at all densities. Low density inner wall limited data was also not obtained despite repeated attempts. Progress was limited today not only by tripping of the LH system (caused by flashover on LH grill at high density) but also by many disruptions and fizzles. Not enough time was available at the end of the day to successfully accomplish an inner gap scan. Good shots, all at 800 kA, 5.4 T: 1) Inner wall limited, nebar=1.35-1.45e20, HXR missing on Chords 1-16 2) Inner wall limited, nebar=1.35-1.4e20, scanning probes 3) Inner wall limited, nebar=1.25-1.32e20, scanning probes 4) Inner wall limited, nebar=1.1e20 steady, scanning probes 7) Double null, nebar=7-9e19, no scanning probes 8) Double null, nebar=8e19 steady, scanning probes 16) Lower null, nebar=9-9.5e19, no scanning probes 17) Lower null, nebar=8e19, scanning probes 31) Lower null, nebar=1.3e20, scanning probes |

| The machine ran reasonably well today, but we had some trouble with fizzles. Shot 2 had a bounce and early hards, so I made Bz less negative, and probably overdid it a bit. Also chased fill pressure through the day, and played a bit with BR. The BR changes were probably irrelevant.
We had one power supply problem (shot 15, EF1L) which caused a dud. After shot 9, I had the engineers move the fizzle off time to 1.8 seconds. There appeared to be no ill effects on coax resistance.

| Aug 20 2010 09:32:35:147AM | 1100820001 | Greg Wallace | Good shot! LH clean until near end of pulse. nl_04=7-7.5e19, nebar=1.35-1.45e20. PLH=650 kW.
Some heating on B-side septa of B row. Will repeat with lower density on next shot. Scanning probes on next shot. |
| Aug 20 2010 09:32:13:617AM | 1100820002 | Greg Wallace | Good shot! nebar=1.35-1.4e20, nl_04=7-7.2e19, PLH=650 kW, n||=1.9, inner wall limited with scanning probes. Will suffice for step 4 of run plan.
Next step will try to reduce density further and eliminate vertical jog in zcur (for real this time). |
| Aug 20 2010 09:49:15:917AM | 1100820003 | Greg Wallace | Good shot! Inner wall limited, nl_04=6.5-6.8e19, nebar=1.25-1.32e20. PLH=625 kW, n||=1.9. Again, this shot might be good for step 4 of run plan, but not low enough density for step 1. Good MSE and scanning probe data on this shot. HXR ch 16 looks funny, 15 and 14 are OK.
Next shot will try again to get lower density in limited configuration. |
| Aug 20 2010 09:57:06:893AM | 1100820004 | Greg Wallace | Good shot! Inner wall limited, nl_04=5.5e19, nebar=1.1e20. PLH=650 kW, n||=1.9. Density is lower now but not quite as low as I'd like for step 1.
Next shot will try one final time for the low density data point (nl_04~4.5e19). |
| Aug 20 2010 10:20:10:447AM | 1100820005 | Greg Wallace | Disruption at 0.62 s. Will try again for low density inner wall limited. |
| Aug 20 2010 10:23:34:340AM | 1100820006 | Greg Wallace | Disruption again, at 0.76 s this time. Moving on to step 2 (low density double null) for next shot. Will take equilibrium from 1100806021. |
| Aug 20 2010 10:41:25:950AM | 1100820007 | Greg Wallace | Good shot! A few trips late in LH pulse but otherwise no problems. Density moves around a bit more than I'd like. Double null, nl_04=4-5e19, nebar=7-9e19, PLH=650 kW, n||=1.9. Syun'ichi thinks there was a locked mode during lowest density part of LH pulse.
Next shot will repeat with scanning probes and will try for flatter density during LH. |
| Aug 20 2010 10:57:55:057AM | 1100820008 | Greg Wallace | OK shot. Some trips late in shot with indications of hot spots on A and B rows-D side on LH camera. Density during LH was better controlled. Double null, nl_04=~4.5e19, nebar=~8e19, PLH=675 kW, n||=1.9.
Will try again on next shot, hoping for fewer trips. |
| Aug 20 2010 11:25:09:120AM | 1100820009 | Greg Wallace | Many trips on LH later in the pulse, coincident with hotspot activity on the A and B rows. Will try again with launcher moved back slightly (1272 vs 1270 on PLC). Looks like 1 or 2 H-modes during early part of LH pulse. Will try again on next shot.
Ch 16 on HXR still looks funny. |
| Aug 20 2010 11:38:39:947AM | 1100820010 | Greg Wallace | Dithering H-modes during LH. Will try again with lower density before LH. |
| Aug 20 2010 11:53:25:637AM | 1100820011 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle. HXR ch 16 shows just bit noise. Seems like there might be a problem with either shaper connectivity or the ribbon cable for ch 16. |
| Aug 20 2010 12:10:15:863PM | 1100820012 | Greg Wallace | All trips on LH. Got the plasma I wanted on this shot, though. Density was 1e18 on LH probes. Should have been enough for good coupling. Will try again with launcher back at 1270 counts. Last attempt at low density double null. |
| Aug 20 2010 12:25:30:453PM | 1100820013 | Greg Wallace | All trips again. Punting on step 2 and moving on to step 3 (single null, low density).
Looking into phase on klystron 4 as possible reason for very high reflections on col 6 which caused trips. Test shots confirm that phase of klystron 4 is moving all over the place. |
| Aug 20 2010 12:47:43:157PM | 1100820014 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle. Test shot into dummy load shows phase on klystron 4 is unpredictable. Will put klystron 4 into dummy load for next shot. |
| Aug 20 2010 01:00:55:240PM | 1100820015 | Greg Wallace | Dud. Will try again for low density single null (step 3). |
| Aug 20 2010 01:17:02:683PM | 1100820016 | Greg Wallace | Good shot! Lower null, nl_04=~5.5e19, nebar=9-9.5e19, PLH=600 kW (klyst 4 into dummy load), n||=1.9.
Next shot will repeat with (hopefully) lower density and scanning probes. |
| Aug 20 2010 01:30:07:653PM | 1100820017 | Greg Wallace | Good shot! Perfect for step 3. Lower null, nl_04~4.75e19, nebar~8e19, PLH~600 kW, n||=1.9. Good scanning probe data and MSE data.
Moving on to step 5 (already got step 4 in early part of run day, shots 2-3), double null at high density. |
| Aug 20 2010 02:53:53:927PM | 1100820018 | Greg Wallace | Many trips on LH. Lots of flashing on LH camera---looks like maybe an injection or two as well? WIDE2 shows increase in brightness on upper and lower divertors at same time as flashing on grill. This is double null for step 5 of run plan.
Next shot will increase outer gap by 5mm to prevent flashover. Also will decrease demand nl_04 from 8 to 7.5e19. |
| Aug 20 2010 01:52:29:873PM | 1100820019 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle. |
| Aug 20 2010 02:02:30:787PM | 1100820020 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle. |
| Aug 20 2010 02:27:37:923PM | 1100820021 | Greg Wallace | Many trips with flashing coming from septum between B16 and B15. Will try again with 5mm larger outer gap. |
| Aug 20 2010 02:35:12:487PM | 1100820022 | Greg Wallace | Some flashing again, then plasma goes vertically unstable due to high elongation. Will try again with original (i.e. shot 13) shape and pull launcher back. |
| Aug 20 2010 02:54:17:700PM | 1100820023 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle. Will try again for step 5 (high density double null). |
| Aug 20 2010 03:05:40:237PM | 1100820024 | Greg Wallace | More flashing again. Will try for less programmed density (nebar=6.25e19 instead of 7.5e19). Still double null. |
| Aug 20 2010 03:20:55:180PM | 1100820025 | Greg Wallace | LH does OK until H-modes start at around 0.92 s. Shot disrupts at 1.19 s. Early injection of Mo, but disruption does not seem to be W (according to Nathan). Will try again and hope to not get H-mode or disruption. |
| Aug 20 2010 03:39:37:607PM | 1100820026 | Greg Wallace | More H-modes lead to flashing on grill and many trips. Plasma disrupts again at 1.13 s. LH system does not seem to like double null at high density. Will try reducing LH power from 140 to 130 kW/klystron on next shot. |
| Aug 20 2010 03:42:11:643PM | 1100820027 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle. |
| Aug 20 2010 03:54:07:267PM | 1100820028 | Greg Wallace | Another fizzle. |
| Aug 20 2010 04:16:41:947PM | 1100820029 | Greg Wallace | Problems with H-modes again causing LH to flash over the grill and trip. Giving up on step 5 (double null, high density) and moving on to step 6 (single null, high density) for next shot. |
| Aug 20 2010 04:20:31:807PM | 1100820030 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle. |
| Aug 20 2010 04:47:03:833PM | 1100820031 | Greg Wallace | Good shot! Lower null, nl_04~8e19, nebar~1.3e20, PLH=600 kW, n||=1.9. Got what I needed for step 6 of run plan (single null, high density).
Moving on to step 8 of the run (lower null inner gap scan) at high density for next shot. |
| Aug 20 2010 04:56:52:357PM | 1100820032 | Greg Wallace | Inner gap scan, but didn't quite get what I wanted. Density increases as we go towards inner wall limited and we get some flashing on the grill.
Next shot will be ohmic baseline for MSE. |
| Aug 20 2010 05:18:14:490PM | 1100820033 | Greg Wallace | Ohmic shot for MSE. |
