| 1. Establish fiducial discharge at 5.4 T, IP =1 MA, nl04~1, right gap
~1.5 cm, elongation ~1.6, upper and lower triangularity 0.3 and 0.5 respectively. Similar to 1100824005 but the strike point sweep needs to be modified to start on tile #2 (from bottom) sweeping to tile #3 and back down. 1a. Recover antenna performance post boronization. (1) and (1a) can proceed simulatneously and we may lower current to obtain EDA H-modes. (5-8) shots 2. Vary mix of RF antenna powers. Does Mo rise with successive antenna and then fall when another is dominant? 4-5 discharges per antenna (8-10 shots) 3. Run the ICRF power at 3 MW from 0.7 to 1.1 sec and increase to 4 MW from 1.1 to 1.5 sec. - How many joules before performance degrades (15-20). If necessary and permitted, increase ICRF power to 5 MW 4. Once performance degrades and Mo impurity becomes dominant, seed with Ne. Does performance continue to degrade? Does Mo concentration decrease? (8-10) discharges Will need to adjust neon puff to find appropriate waveform that allows for good confinement |

| Recovery from boronization was ~5 discharges for D and E antennas. J
antenna was injecting Mo ~1.6 MW so we started Ne seeding on 006. Despite initial promising discharges, the discharges were plagued by injections initially from J antenna but we had contributions from the inner wall (006, 007, and 009).Ne seeding did not prove to be the elixir it was in the past campaign but we did vary the seeding location and strength. B-side lower and H-bottom gave similar RF results when programmed identically. With lower Ne seeding, the Mo radiation and injections were increased. |

| PO summary for 1100826
MP568 - Plasma Performance Evaluation with Boron coated Molybdenum Tiles APO/PO: J. Hughes / S. Wolfe SL: S. Wukitch This run followed a boronization and was intended to evaluate plasma performance evolution with ICRF throughout the day. The cryopump was not used today. Ne seeding was employed on a number of discharges, with puffs applied from both H-bottom and the B-side lower valves. Gas programming went well, and the SL was able to compare ICRF and plasma performance with roughly equivalent Ne puffing from the two locations. We had a great number of injections today, generally Mo. It was not easy to determine the source of many of these and to ameliorate them. One exception was a repeatable injection caused by the apparently damaged inner wall tile which is directly in view of the WIDE2 camera. Some particularly spectacular injections at around 200ms can be seen on shots 6 and 7. We were able to fix this by delaying the ZCUR jog down until closer to the divert time, thus reducing the direct heat load to this hot spot (though the glow remained). This change was made from shot 11 onward. Also early in the run, a number of modifications were made to the lower x-point program in order to modify the strike point sweep. The session leader's desire to sweep the strike first up and then back down the plate was difficult to implement, since we have to fight against the flux swing from EF1 lower. However, we had some luck forcing it back down by significantly lowering ZXL and RXL by 1.5s. However, I don't really recommend this strike point reversal be used unless you really need it. A number of shots later in the day were terminated by injections at the beginning of or just into rampdown. Initially it was thought this might be associated with nearing double null due to the various sweeps being applied to the X-point, but these persisted even after this was fixed on shot 25. The SL also tried to delay these full current disruptions by extending the RF power pulse, but this met with limited success. Startup went fairly well today, though there were a number of early bounces in the first half, which were beginning to turn into fizzles around shot 12. We had success getting out of this with minor tweaks to the pre-fill (it ranged from 20 to 25ms) and an adjustment to the RCUR offset in Segment 1 (2500-->3500) from shot 16 onward. After shot 22, startup remained unchanged. An interesting occurrence should be made note of my other Phys Ops in training and their tutors. Today Wolfe had two instances of PCS open under his login. The first was open on my workstation and allowed me to make changes. The second was open in safe mode on his workstation. Since they were both accessing the same scratch directory under /home/wolfe/, when he would load a shot or segment to look at it, he would overwrite any changes I had made, and these could (and did) creep into the model tree that I was writing. We caught this before it could do any harm, and he locally unset his pcs_scratch environment variable so that his PCS would generate a temporary scratch area that would not interfere with the one I was using. Tally . . . Plasmas: 31 Fizzles: 3 Duds: 0 No-power: 0 |

| Aug 25 2010 03:20:11:650PM | Jerry Hughes | Setting up for first shot on 1100826.
Load from 1100824005. (a shot with cryopump) In segment 1, reduce PULSE_GAS4 width from 60ms to 20ms. (No cryopump, fresh boronization.) Now change strike point sweep. In segment 2, remove the downward jog in RXL at 0.5s. Then reduce upward sweep of RXL to a total excursion of +0.005m, and bring RXL back to 0 at 1.5s. This should sweep the strike in the vicinity of the 2nd and 3rd tile row. Also at Wolfe's suggestion, put in a modest rampdown of ZXL demand during flattop (dZXL=-0.002m). SL requests target nl04 of 1.0e20. Making this change in Segment 2 as well. Saving as shot 1100826888 in /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch/ | |
| Aug 26 2010 07:15:19:933AM | Steve Wolfe | There was a problem with the cooling water to the PEI supply last night. A fitting on the pump to the supply cracked and leaked about 200gal. of DI water. Boronization was completed, along with the He ECDC and all but about 15 minutes of D2 ECDC before the system was shut down. Repair of the pump fitting is requied to run the PEI for the TF scanner. Resistivity needs to return to acceptable levels in the DI loop before it can be used for the transmitters. Start time for the run may be delayed, but at the moment we are proceeding as if we will begin on time. Lockup announcement for 7:30AM has been issued. | |
| Aug 26 2010 07:26:53:330AM | Jerry Hughes | Lock-up delayed to 7:45. | |
| Aug 26 2010 07:43:51:643AM | Steve Wolfe | Andy reports that the PEI pump has been fixed, and the water resistivity is acceptable. Two blown fuses were found in the TF cabinet and are being replaced. Start of run may be slightly delayed. | |
| Aug 26 2010 08:00:45:033AM | Jerry Hughes | 8:00. Fuses have been tested and the search is starting now. | |
| Aug 26 2010 08:40:51:640AM | 1100826001 | Jerry Hughes | Steve Wolfe has started command line PCS from his login. I will use this to
program the shots. Load shot 1100826888 set up yesterday from /home/jwhughes/physop/pcs_scratch/ Load at 26-Aug-2010 07:33:00.00 Subsequently made a title change to segment 2 and reloaded. Load at 26-Aug-2010 08:15:59.00 Result: Plasma to 1.9s Reasonable startup. Density program ok. Strike point sweep needs some adjustment. It is putting flux primarily on the third and fourth row, and not the 2nd and 3rd row as requested. |
| Aug 26 2010 08:53:56:353AM | 1100826002 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 2.
Changes made: The RXL in flattop was moved inboard by net -0.005m. ZXL in flattop was moved down by net -0.010m. Result: Plasma to 1.9. G-side rat is corrupt. Strike point is pulling up to 3rd tile and hanging. Fighting the flux swing in EF1L. |
| Aug 26 2010 09:08:37:977AM | 1100826003 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 3.
Changes made: Increased RXL ramp down in the 2nd half of flattop. Increased ZXL ramp down throughout flattop, but also raised its start point by 0.005m in order to raise the strike early. Result: Plasma to 1.9s. Bounce in startup. Will watch and see if it recurs on the next shot. Strike point sweep seems to be reversing a little, as desired. But it is hard to evaluate this due to the H-L-H from 1.1 to 1.2s. |
| Aug 26 2010 09:17:44:440AM | 1100826004 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 4
Changes: None Result: Plasma to 1.96s Still bounces. |
| Aug 26 2010 10:07:48:970AM | 1100826005 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 5:
Changes: Increase pre-fill from 20ms to 21ms to try to slow current rise, prevent bounce. Also in Segment 2, raise peak demand on RXL (@1s) by 0.005m and Raise ZXL in the early flattop by 0.005m. This is try to spread more heat to tile row 3, and also to get the strike off the floor before 0.7s. >> Load at 26-Aug-2010 09:23:32.00 Result: Plasma, full length |
| Aug 26 2010 09:57:18:630AM | 1100826006 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 6:
Changes: SL wants Neon. Having EO enable H-bottom. Adding PG5 pulse of 40V from 0.5 to 0.7s. Modifying DPCS_PIEZO_CHOPPER output to read ["pulse_gas3","h-bot "] Load at 26-Aug-2010 09:44:09.00 Result: Plasma with significant injections disruption at 0.42s. It doesn't appear that the DPCS_PIEZO_CHOPPER change got loaded, although this would have had no effect, since the plasma didn't make it to the Ne injection time. Startup seems okay. |
| Aug 26 2010 10:17:54:140AM | 1100826007 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 7.
Changes: Made sure that the DPCS_PIEZO_CHOPPER output includes "h-bot" this time. Load at 26-Aug-2010 09:53:14.00 Result: Plasma, with a very ugly injection at at 0.17s, dead by 0.42s. This is very concerning. It is possible that something drastically wrong occurred while we were doing load_from's on multiple PCS instances launched from the same account (wolfe's) |
| Aug 26 2010 10:25:17:537AM | 1100826008 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 8.
Changes: Load from 1100826005. Disable H-bottom. Load at 26-Aug-2010 10:15:05.00 Result: Fizzle, post-disruption. |
| Aug 26 2010 10:44:12:667AM | 1100826009 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 9.
Changes: none. Results: Plasma, full length. Injection at 0.2s is repeated, but the plasma survives. There is another at 0.5s. It is very clear that the early injections are caused by local heating at a spot near the midplane to the right of the Thomson view dump. WIDE2 shows this clearly on shots 6,7 and 9, along with the ejection pattern of the liberated metal. |
| Aug 26 2010 10:57:43:197AM | 1100826010 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 10.
Changes: Added 40V pulse on PG5 from 0.5 to 0.7s Changed output on DPCS_PIEZO_CHOPPER to read ["pulse_gas3","h-bot "] Load at 26-Aug-2010 10:45:30.00 Ask for H-bottom enable. Also DNB gate valve is enabled. Result: Plasma to 1.77s. Early startup ok. |
| Aug 26 2010 11:15:54:933AM | 1100826011 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 11.
Changes: Delay ZCUR drop to 0.3--0.4s. It was before 0.2s. This may help relieve the heat load to the hot spot. Reinke requests lowering Ne puff. Reduce PG5 V demand from 40 to 20. Load at 26-Aug-2010 11:00:20.00 Result: Plasma to 1.86s. Startup ok. The 0.2s injection haas been ameliorated for now. Strike point sweep seems to be distributing power acceptably well. |
| Aug 26 2010 11:24:52:560AM | 1100826012 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 12:
Changes: Moving PG5 pulse to 0.4--0.6s, since it seems to tak 150ms for the H-bottom gas to hit the plasma. Load at 26-Aug-2010 11:18:36.00 Results: Fizzle. Early bouncer. |
| Aug 26 2010 11:44:25:387AM | 1100826013 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 13.
Changes: Increase pre-fill from 21ms to 22ms. Load at 26-Aug-2010 11:28:39.00 Result: Plasma, full length Bounce during startup. |
| Aug 26 2010 11:57:32:170AM | 1100826014 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 14.
Changes: Increase pre-fill pulse from 22 to 23ms. Load at 26-Aug-2010 11:45:38.00 Result: Fizzle. A later bounce, not survivable. |
| Aug 26 2010 12:15:09:680PM | 1100826015 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 15.
Changes: Increase pre-fill from 23 to 25ms. Load at 26-Aug-2010 11:56:49.00 Result: Plasma to 1.9s Still bounces. Wolfe says if we don't do something we'll be stuck in a fizzle/plasma cycle. |
| Aug 26 2010 12:27:00:817PM | 1100826016 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 16.
Changes: In Segment 1, set the offset in the RCUR program from 2500 to 3500. This is Wolfe's second trick for ameliorating the outward bounce. Load at 26-Aug-2010 12:12:37.00 Result: Plasma to 1.9s. No bounce this time. |
| Aug 26 2010 12:52:23:293PM | 1100826017 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 17.
Changes: Delay beginning of strike point sweep until 0.8, per SL's request. Change RXL program to begin sweeping at 0.8; change peak of sweep to 1.1s Also, change ZXL program to ramp down an additional 0.005m by 1.5s. Load at 26-Aug-2010 12:32:51.00 Result: Plasma to 1.85s. Startup looks ok. Strike point changes seem to have worked, at least early before the H-L back-transitions. |
| Aug 26 2010 01:01:29:217PM | 1100826018 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 18

Changes: Reduce peak Ip demand to 900kA Load at 26-Aug-2010 13:03:14.00 Result: Plasma to 1.9s. |
| Aug 26 2010 01:47:55:753PM | 1100826020 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#20: Decreased peak rxl by 5mm to -.001 ZXL at 1sec decreased by 1cm to -.0165 Jerry is having a keyboard problem, Wolfe taking over as Physop. Result: strikes changed, as expected. No injection at 1.05sec this time, RF still faulting out around 1.1sec Next: no change |
| Aug 26 2010 02:10:33:127PM | 1100826020 | Jerry Hughes |
Steve Wolfe takes over for shots 20 thru 22 due to my sticky keys being stuck. |
| Aug 26 2010 02:00:00:267PM | 1100826021 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#21: Disable H-bottom (turn off H-bottom) per SL request Disrupts at 1.19sec, looks like an rf-induced injection to me. Next: increase right gap by 5mm |
| Aug 26 2010 02:08:43:463PM | 1100826022 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#22: increase right gap by 5mm Rcur from .66,.6625 to .6575,.660 (t=.5,1.5sec) pg4 from 25 to 23msec |
| Aug 26 2010 02:58:51:243PM | 1100826023 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 23.
We were delayed for over 1/2hr to un-hang some data acquisition, the RF monitor. Changes to shot: Increase PG5 demand from 20 to 40, keeping same timing. Have H-bottom enabled. Load at 26-Aug-2010 14:22:47.00 Result: Plasma to 1.75s. Somewhat late breakdown. Should keep an eye on it. |
| Aug 26 2010 03:12:37:150PM | 1100826024 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 24.
Changes: None. (SL will change the RF program.) Result: Plasma to 1.5s. Disruption due to injection. |
| Aug 26 2010 03:33:36:520PM | 1100826025 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 25.
Change: Increase ZXU during flattop by about 1cm to 0.028. This is intended to keep us from going close to DN Load at 26-Aug-2010 15:17:30.00 Result: Plasma to 1.47s. Not as close to DN as last time. Several unpleasant H-modes. ICRF is unhappy. |
| Aug 26 2010 03:41:32:457PM | 1100826026 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 26.
Changes: No PO changes. Result: Plasma makes it to 1.72s. |
| Aug 26 2010 04:05:11:327PM | 1100826027 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 27.
Changes: Having H-bottom disabled and Putting Ne in B-side-lower and enabling. In segment 2, setting PG1 to 100 from 0.4s to 0.6s. Set output of DPCS_PIEZO_CHOPPER to ["pulse_gas3","h-bot ","pulse_gas1"]. Load at 26-Aug-2010 15:48:11.00 This is just crazy enough to work. Result: Plasma, only to 1.5s. These disruptions seems to correspond to going to DN. I'll try to prevent this. |
| Aug 26 2010 04:16:34:150PM | 1100826028 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 28.
Changes: Raise ZXU demand at 1.5s 1cm to 0.038. (Try to keep the plasma LSN.) Load at 26-Aug-2010 16:06:08.00 Result: Plasma, still disrupts at 1.47s. Breakdown is kind of late. |
| Aug 26 2010 04:34:55:917PM | 1100826029 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 29.
Changes. Having B-side lower disabled and H-bottom re-enabled. Leave PG5 programing chopped at 40. Result: Plasma to 1.42s. Shot still looks crummy. |
| Aug 26 2010 05:00:07:280PM | 1100826030 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 30.
Changes: Turn on H-bottom full. Take PG5 pulse from 40 to 100, still going from 0.4s to 0.6s. Load at 26-Aug-2010 16:38:26.00 Result: Plasma to 1.54s. Started to tickle rampdown that time, perhaps due to the increased ICRF out to 1.5s. |
| Aug 26 2010 05:17:33:287PM | 1100826031 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 31.
Cell access for Jim Irby. Changes: No PO changes. Wukitch will give us more ICRF into rampdown. Result: Plasma to 1.51s. |
| Aug 26 2010 05:26:05:170PM | 1100826032 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 32.
Changes: Have H-bottom disabled, B-side lower re-enabled. + some ICRF changes from Wukitch Results: Plasma to 1.66. Better EDA H-modes were obtained. Wmhd peaks at 147kJ. |
| Aug 26 2010 05:41:17:787PM | 1100826033 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 33.
Changes: Decrease Ne pulse. Leave PG1 on full but decrease gate from [0.4,0.6] to [0.5,0.6]. Load at 26-Aug-2010 17:28:42.00 Result: Plasma to 1.75s. Wolfe notes excessive hards around 200ms. A decent looking EDA H-mode killed by an injection after 1.1s. |
| Aug 26 2010 06:13:12:750PM | 1100826034 | Jerry Hughes | Shot 34.
Changes: SL wants to repeat shot 32 with the original Ne pulse. Load from 1100826032. Load at 26-Aug-2010 17:43:15.00 Result: Plasma to 1.66s. End of run. |
