SL-plan for Run: 1101013 MP572: Detailed scan of low collisionality H-Modes PB: MP598:Impurity Transport Studies in L and H-Mode Plasmas Using the Modified HIREX Sr. Spectrometer SL: Dominguez /PBSL: Howard PO: Irby The objective of this MP is to use the correlation reflectometry system to study the density fluctuations inside the pedestal of low collisionality H-Modes (0.5 density is in 10^(19)m^(-3), R is in m and Te is in keV. The increased density peakness inside the pedestal is necessary for O-mode reflectometry cutoff localization. Throughout the run, N.T. Howard will be injecting calcium at the end of the H-modes in order to run his MP The solicited diagnostic set is: Correlation Reflectometry O-mode fixed reflectometry Core and Edge Thomson PCI Fast magnetics HIREX Sr HIREX Jr Cryopump GPI VB FRCECE (if available) D(alpha) GPC1 CXRS MSE Boronization: overnight (standard setup (without D2 ECDC)). Target boronization parameters: 10% deuterated diborane/90 % helium dP: 120 psi TC6: 80 mTorr rmin/rdwell/rmax: 44/52/103 cm tdwell/tsweep: 60/120 s Pulsar set @ .7 on/ 0.3 off EF4 current: 0 A Post boronization ECDC ---------------------------- 1st Gas Setup: Gas: He sweep: 44/45/103 cm scan: 20/120 s Pressure: 5e-5 Torr Duration: 2 hrs ----------------------- Run plan: I) Shots 1-5 The beginning of the run will be sacrificed for 2 calibrations that will be needed: ~3-5 shots will be used to for ECE cutoff calibration of the Thomson system. The skilled hands of Yunxing Ma and Amanda Hubbard will be essential for this endeavor. -1 shot will be used for Hirex Sr. calibration. For this shot, we will use 1100909002 as a target shot. II) Shots 5-20 After the calibration shots, we will begin with part A of the MP572 experimental plan (ne20=1.5 in the outer half of the plasma). a) For these shots, we'll begin reproducing shot 1091208021 with a few changes: -Whereas 1091208021 does an SSEP sweep before the ICRF is turned on, we'll maintain SSEP~+0.2cm throughout the shot. -Set the target L-mode nl_04=0.7E20 (slightly lower than for 1091208021). The main objective is to reproduce peaked (ne(core)/ne(ped)~2)steady (>500ms) H-modes. b) Using the target nl_04 and Ip as knobs, the density profile will be modified from shot to shot in order to sweep the cutoff layer of the 112GHz reflectometry channel (ne_cutoff=1.56E20) through the range of r/a=0.5->0.8 (R~80cm->85cm). c) If we acquire 3 successful shot at different r/a cutoff values before shot 20, the frequency staircase values of the variable frequency reflectometry channel will be modified (step size will be reduced by half) and the successful shots will be repeated. III) Shots 21-30 These shots will be focused on part B of the MP: higher density shots such that the 140GHz channel cutoff (n_e=2.43E20) is localized at r/a=0.5->0.8. a) We'll use shot 1091208027 as the target shot. (Without the ninja puffing in the middle of the H-mode) The objective is, again, to create peaked steady H-modes. For higher ne, the peakness is expected to be less pronounced, but it has been seen that values of ne(core)/ne(ped)~1.45 have been achieved in past runs. b+c) Once steady H-modes have been established, we will repeat IIb and IIc focused on the 140GHz fixed channel. |

| This run suffered from 1st run-itis. The morning was spent readying the machine for the campaign: power test shots, TS alignment and TS calibration. There were also some issues with TCI and ICRF.
The actual MP began at ~2PM with some fizzles and with unconditioned ICRF. Shot 23 had a pretty good steady H-mode but the ICRF was still not good enough for the necessary peaking. 24 and 25 are steady H-modes with constand decreasing densities. In order to control this, 26's ZCUR was dropped by 4mm. This seemed to help steady the drift. The H-modes look peaked yet still not the desired level. 27 repeated the 26 and it was even better (J-port was probably finally getting cleaned). The density was lowered from 6.5 to 5 after shot 28 to try for a more peaked H-mode. 29 had bad ICRF coupling so the last shot (30) was aimed to have the same condition...it was the probably the best shot of the day. Not very peaked, but nonetheless good positioning. One reason that might explain the ICRF performance is the fact that the boronization recipe went up to ~103 cm. If repeated, we might want do a boronization like the one done on 1090903 where it only went to ~80cm. Edge TS seem jumpy throughout the day, Yunxing proposes this is related to the LCFS being very close to the limiter. Since this was the first run day after the break, the beginning of the day was devoted to test shots and calibrations: 1:Start part I 1-5: Power test shots 6,7: fizzle 8-13: TS alignment 13 had a long H-mode at a suitable density for II), not very peaked, probably because the ICRF was too low, therefore, Te was low. 12: power supply issues 14-17:ECE-TS calibration 18:Start part II After a good shot 13, we try to repeat it, hopefully with good ICRF 18:Ip too high 19,20:Fizzle 21: Longish H-Mode but still not enough temperature for the stable peaked H-mode. The ICRF looks like it's still recovering from the boronization 22: ICRF trouble caused short H-modes 23: Good long H-mode! Not very peaked, but steady and a good recipe if the ICRF improved. 24,25: Good H-modes, better ICRF, decreasing H-mode density 26: Slightly LN. Again H-mode (slightly peaked) but not drifting in density 27:Again steady but not very peaked 28:Again steady but not very peaked 29:After lowering the nl, the ICRF was pretty choppy 30:Good steady H-mode in the right range. Probably the best shot of the day. |

| We began this run doing power tests of oh2_l, oh2_u, and the TF to make
sure repairs to some of the cabling for these systems had been properly installed. Then several shots were run for TS alignment and ECE/TS density calibrations. Much of the day was spent conditioning the J-Port antenna. Boronization was run out to walls before this run and that may have been the cause of the unusally long time required to condition it. The machine generally ran well with a few fizzles following disruptions. PO could have done a better job tweaking the gas in these cases. The startup used was from 1100910021 with only two tweaks in gas and one in EF4. A big issue for the day was that I installed the new TCI detector array incorrectly (upside down). So channel 10 was in fact in position 01, 09 in position 08, 04 in position 07. The NLs will be corrected in software, but unfortunately this mistake resulted in the requested densities being about 10% higher than we were actually asking for. We tried to compensate for this effect on the last two shots of the day. |

| Oct 13 2010 02:09:22:717PM | 1101013018 | Arturo Dominguez | Density went too high, probably because the current went too high
