MP606: Measurements of Mode Converted Waves in D-H Plasmas with Phase Contrast Imaging Bt: 5.4-5.7 T Ip: 0.6-1.4 MA nl04 ~ 0.6-1.2e20 m^-2 Working Gas Species: D2 Boronization Requested: No Standard ECDC Overnight Diagnostics: Standard profile measurements, PCI, ECE, CNPA -- The goal is to have measurements in steady rf heated plasmas, with optimum parameters for PCI. Run each antenna separately at different power levels and try to see the minority tail effects on wave damping. Try a few different plasma parameters as time permits. -- 1. Run similar plasmas with different rf waveforms to see minority tail effects Start from 0.8 MA, 5.5 T, nl04 = 0.9e20 m^-2, LSN. RF waveforms: D:0.6-0.9 s, E:0.9-1.2 s, J:1.2-1.5 s, 0.5 MW J:0.6-0.9 s, E:0.9-1.2 s, D:1.2-1.5 s, 0.5 MW D:0.6-0.9 s, J:0.9-1.2 s, E:1.2-1.5 s, 0.5 MW D:0.6-1.5 s, 1.0 MW E:0.6-1.5 s, 1.0 MW J:0.6-1.5 s, 1.0 MW *D:0.6-0.9 s, E:0.9-1.2 s, J:1.2-1.5 s, 1.0 MW J:0.6-0.9 s, E:0.9-1.2 s, D:1.2-1.5 s, 1.0 MW D:0.6-0.9 s, J:0.9-1.2 s, E:1.2-1.5 s, 1.0 MW D:0.6-1.5 s, 1.3 MW E:0.6-1.5 s, 1.3 MW J:0.6-1.5 s, 2.0 MW In H-modes, adjust Bt slightly up, if neccessary. Go to usn when the measurements are not successful. 2. Density scan Run the waveform* with nl04 = 0.6, 1.2e20 m^-2 3. Current scan Run the waveform* with Ip = 0.6, 1.2 MA (nl04 = 0.9e20 m^-2) |

| Started with LSN, 0.8 MA, 5.6 T, nl04 = 0.8e20 m^-2, 0.5 MW. We were already getting H-modes at this power level. PCI did see some fluctuations, but they were not very steady. Successful USN starting from shot 7, and fairly steady signal was observed for rf power of 0.5 MW (shot 7) and 1.0 MW (shot 8-13). High power part was not very successful due to rf faults. Only one shot at 1.5 MW, J antenna (shot 18). We started moving towards nl04 ~ 0.6e20 m^-2 from shot 23. D, E and J, full length at 1.0 MW (shot 23-31). Some J antenna phasing scan at the end. Strong phasing dependence was seen while shot 29 and 31 (both -90 degrees) were very similar. |

| Two shots were disrupted by mystery power supply trips. One by operator inadequacy. Other than that plasma ran all the way up and down.

| Oct 15 2010 08:34:16:040AM | Ian Hutchinson | Start with last shot from yesterday.
Set fill puff to 22ms. Load segment 2 from 1100804004 Flatten RXL to -.005 That was a 5.4T 150KA shot. Raise TF current to 150kA. NL04 is already set to 0.9 Load. | |
| Oct 15 2010 09:21:55:120AM | 1101015001 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma to rampdown. Some feeble H modes.
Raise TF current to 157kA. Load |
| Oct 15 2010 09:35:14:023AM | 1101015002 | Ian Hutchinson | Rather similar. Sustained feeble H-mode.
Lower NL04 to .8e20 Load Raise zxl to -.005 from -.015 Load |
| Oct 15 2010 10:08:09:387AM | 1101015003 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma disrupts at .5s.
Caused by crowbar of OH2L at .39s. |
| Oct 15 2010 10:30:18:330AM | 1101015004 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma to rampdown. Still getting little H-modes.
Turn the plasma upside down: Swap zxl and zxu and flip each. Swap rxl and rxu and NOT flip. Flip both zcur. Load Rename segment 2 to USN. |
| Oct 15 2010 10:48:22:010AM | 1101015005 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma disrupts at .35s. Caused by VDE.
Appears to arise because EF2L is saturated. Move ICEF4 current gain drop to .25s from .5. Move EF2byEF4 gain to .178. Set clearin keyword to zxa=.394. Call. Increase rxu gain. Decrease rxl gain. Set zxu to zero. |
| Oct 15 2010 11:12:21:107AM | 1101015006 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma disrupts at 0.55. Caused by crowbar of EF1L at about .4s
lower zxl gain raise zxu gain. move rxl in somewhat earlier. Load |
| Oct 15 2010 11:27:28:093AM | 1101015007 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma to rampdown.

| Oct 15 2010 03:01:31:080PM | 1101015022 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma to rampdown.
Lower nl04 to .6e20. Delay the fizzle detector to 2.2s. Load |
| Oct 15 2010 03:15:25:180PM | 1101015023 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma to rampdown.
Lower the early nl04 point to prevent over gassing, which stays in the machine. |
| Oct 15 2010 03:40:13:047PM | 1101015024 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma. Still slightly high density.
Taper off the gas puff in segment 1. |
| Oct 15 2010 04:38:32:160PM | 1101015028 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma to rampdown.
Noticed that the plasma is being thrown away just before 2s. This is apparently caused by gain turn off of rxl, zxl, ... at 1.9s. Move all those to 2 s. Load. |
