| This is MP 619: Effects of ICRF and LH on SOL density profiles.
There are two objectives of this MP. Firstly, the SOL reflectometer will be calibrated to other density profile diagnostics by varying the SOL density profiles as much as possible. Secondly, ICRF and/or LH will be added to see their effects on the SOL density profile. Working gas: D2 No boronization and standard ECDC. ICRF and LH, and cryopump needed. Cryopump may be useful for the first few shots at nl04~ .4. Required diagnostics are Thomson scattering, A and F port scanning probes, LH langmuir probes. Desired diagnostics are emissive/ion sensitive probes. A-coil will be needed for possible locked modes. DNB can be run if others desire. All shots will be 5.4T, preferably LSN. If we are getting H-modes early like on 1101015, switch to USN (1101015007). Load shot 1101015002, but change to B=5.4T,outer gap of 1cm, nl04 of .4 x10^20 m^-2. A/F port scanning probes should scan at .8,1,1.3s. Repeated Shot may be necessary for Thomson scattering alignment; repeats will definitely be necessary so that the probes get into the separatrix. Shot 1: nl04= .4 x 10^20 m-2. I=.8MA, LH at 500kW from .6 to .9s. D at 500kW from 1.1 to 1.4s. Shot 2: nl04= .4 x 10^20 m-2. I=1MA, LH at 500kW from .6 to .9s. D at 500kW from 1.1 to 1.4s. Shot 3: nl04= .4 x 10^20 m-2. I=1.2MA, J at 500kW from .6 to .9s. E at 500kW from 1.1 to 1.4s. Shot 4: nl04= .8 x 10^20 m-2. I=.8MA, LH at 500kW from .6 to .9s. D at 500kW from 1.1 to 1.4s. Shot 5: nl04= .8 x 10^20 m-2. I=1MA, LH at 500kW from .6 to .9s. D at 500kW from 1.1 to 1.4s. Shot 6: nl04= .8 x 10^20 m-2. I=1.2MA, J at 500kW from .6 to .9s. E at 500kW from 1.1 to 1.4s. Shot 7: nl04= 1.2 x 10^20 m-2. I=.8MA, LH at 500kW from .6 to .9s. D at 500kW from 1.1 to 1.4s. Shot 8: nl04= 1.2 x 10^20 m-2. I=1MA, J at 500kW from .6 to .9s. E at 500kW from 1.1 to 1.4s. Shot 9: nl04= 1.2 x 10^20 m-2. I=1.2MA, J at 500kW from .6 to .9s. E at 500kW from 1.1 to 1.4s. A and F port scanning probes no longer needed after this. For the next 5 shots, choose nl04 and current that gives the most change. Shot 10: D,E, J power ramps from .1 to .2MW (.2 to .4MW for J) over .6-.8 s, .9 to 1.1 s, 1.2 to 1.4 s, respectively. Shot 11: E power ramp from .2 to 1MW over .6 to .8s. LH at 500kW from .9 to 1.4s. J power ramp from .4 to 2MW over .9 to 1.4s Shot 12: D power ramp from .2 to 1MW over .6 to .8s. LH at 500kW from .9 to 1.4s. E power ramp from .2 to 1MW over .9 to 1.4s Shot 13: J power ramp from .4 to 2MW over .6 to .8s. E at 500kW from .9 to 1.4s. LH power ramp from .2 MW to max power over .9 to 1.4s Shot 14: D and E power ramp from .2 to 1MW each over .6 to .8s. J at 500kW from .9 to 1.4s. LH power ramp from .2 MW to max power over .9 to 1.4s Shot 15: D and E power ramp from .2 to .5MW, J power ramp from .4 to 1MW over .6 to .8s. LH power ramp from .2 MW to max power over .9 to 1.4s If there is time, repeat above 5 shots for a different nl04, or if H-modes prove to not be interesting, switch to USN for those 5 shots. |

| not really a successful day. shots 4 and 5 had F-probe data. shots 1 and 2 had some H-modes data. Starting with shot 6, we ran into a variety of issues (see phys op summary), and we never recovered. |

| Not a good day today. It started well with the first 5 shots running full length, and a change from LSN to USN equilibrium between shots 1 and 2. This was done to avoid H-Mode, conforming to the SL's run plan. These 5 shots were all at 800 kA and nl_04 ~ 4-5e19 m_2.
At shot 6, the current was increased to 1 MA. This shot disrupted early in rampdown; more significantly, there was a discrepancy in the magnetics signals. For example the current indicated the disruption was at 1.3 s, however, other diagnostics indicated it occured in rampdown at ~ 1.6 s. For the next shot, shot 7, a no-power shot was run and the magnetic signals all appeared normal. However, it was then discovered that the air switch could not be opened. This problem was subsequently associated with a blown fuse. After replacement the airswitch operated properly. However, the same problem recurred indicating that the cause of the blown fuse had not been identified. Subsequent investigation points to a problem with the alternator exciter power. This was still being worked on at the end of the run. A second problem occured after the air switch problem was thought to be fixed, namely two shots (8 and 9) were run and both disrupted due to pulling of the EF1 lower power supply breakers. It is suspected that this may have had to do with the timing of an ICRF gate pulse relative to the EF waveform; however this could not be tested until the airswitch/exciter problem was resolved. Scoorecard: 8 attempts at plasma, 5 full length, 3 disruptions, 1 in rampdown and 2 in flatttop. |

| Oct 20 2010 09:50:01:457AM | 1101020003 | Cornwall Lau | good shot. next shot: change outer gap to 1cm to hopefully improve LH coupling |
| Oct 20 2010 09:59:38:720AM | 1101020004 | Cornwall Lau | good shot. repeat one more time so that Brian can move his probes in. |
| Oct 20 2010 10:19:44:457AM | 1101020005 | Cornwall Lau | good shot, but did not get A port scanning probe data. moving on to 1MA, and hope everything else is the same. |
| Oct 20 2010 10:44:05:170AM | 1101020006 | Cornwall Lau | efit data looks weird, so my density profile reconstruction isn't working. something seems to be wrong with the magnetics as it's showing disruption at 1.35 instead of 1.6, so we are taking a no power shot next.
|
| Oct 20 2010 01:40:34:757PM | 1101020009 | Cornwall Lau | disruption again. next shot: move back to shot 4 or 5 (800kA) to see if it works.
